1.7.3 - Lets Wipe the Hive

Up to an 87% percent majority though only 635 votes total isn't even a 1% representation of the daily concurrency. Still seems like the prevailing wind is behind this idea though, regardless.

    A new level of hack.

You're putting far too much faith in the internet in general with that request.

1.7.3 - Lets Wipe the Hive

Let me try to reiterate my stance here, in reference to hackers and concerns with hackers. We are not here to concern ourselves with the data produced by basement dwelling neckbeard jerkasses and 14 year old children who haven't figured out that life doesn't have cheat codes yet. What they do, their disruptions, their "spawning" of items, is absolutely pointless and meaningless to the greater priority which is to provide as much real and veritable data on alpha builds as possible. That is the only concern, it is all that matters. People let hackers take up too much space in their heads...you know what, hackers get banned, I've got 1514 of them banned on my server right now. BattlEye bans even more of them. Over time, what they do is absolutely meaningless in comparison to what every legitimate or as legitimate as possible player is doing in the DayZ environment at this time. You want to play, you want to have fun, you want to have an "equal chance" and you view these hackers as some kind of impediment to that, you give them far too much power, and every time the DayZ forum squeals like a pig, someone over on 4chan is lulzing it up because your tears are gravy on their steak as far as they're concerned. Lets talk numbers, lets talk real numbers here. Of 1.1 million individual players there is a good outside chance that 10% of that number are probably hackers. Thats 110,000 hackers, give or take a few....lot of hackers, an army almost. But for every hacker there is, there is a ten to one ratio of people playing the game more or less as intended. And for every ammo box spawned, only one or two people have actually taken anything out of it, same with Thunderdomes and whatever else. Now lets think about tents. Our last veritable information from the DayZ staff was that there were WELL over a million tents storing data on the Hive. That is where part of the problem with saves are coming from. Now lets think about the fact that most DayZ servers restart at least once a day if not up to 4 times a day to maintain optimal performance. 1 million tents, and an average of 40 players per server with upwards of 4000 servers. In theory this means that the EXACT SAME tent has handed at least 4 separate individual players the same weapons, tools and ammunition, once every day for the last month. One million tents, times one million players times four million copies of the same gun, every, single, day. And thats not even taking into account every individual item in a tent, thats just theoretically throwing around worst case scenario numbers where EVERY tent on the Hive only has ONE ITEM PERIOD. Four million duped items a day, completely by fault of design. Do you really think a hacker, or even an army of hackers can replicate that? No...they cannot. 1.7.2.5 has been more detrimental than hackers, 1.7.2.5 has taken a lot of the work out of being a "hacker" far as gear is concerned, 1.7.2.5 has replicated more items in the last 30 days than "hackers" have in the entire lifespan of DayZ as a mod so far. So stop concerning yourselves with hackers, they're not even statistically relevant in regards to the replication numbers we're talking about in reference to the 1.7.2.5 situation.
  4. You keep reporting people for posting IP's and quoting the forum rules. Even the moderators don't know for sure if thats a rule or not. Griff has been queried for a clarification, it has not been given. Where are you finding this amazing "no IP" rule? Because it is surely not in the Cheat Reporting guidelines.

Not entirely necessary, lets try to keep the thread clean. The feces throwing section is up a few forums. Thanks man.

1.7.3 - Lets Wipe the Hive

I don't agree that attrition rates will in anyway remove the current explosion of objects in the Hive that has occurred due to the 1.7.2.5 Hive 0.7.3 bug problems. And for anyone saying "just remove tents" you might as well add "just remove vehicles, corpses of various NPCs and animals and backpacks" too cause its not like tents are the only place where duping can occur. Tents are just an unintentional partner in the current object replication flood the Hive is storing. Because they keep refilling themselves....like vending machines, and thats not their fault, and its not our fault either.

As I've continued to maintain I do not disagree, yes, hackers will spawn new ammo boxes and gear up right out of the gate. And a few small changes on the hive side, could very easily track those hackers doing it, and submit their GUID's to BattlEye for the next ban sweep. And it would be much easier to do on a Hive that isn't currently cluttered with an inordinately large amount of unintentionally duped weaponry that was placed into the object tables by a long standing bug. Course if they simply assigned a unique hash for each weapon legitimately spawned weapon, then purged the Hive daily of any duplicated hashes and invalid hashes, well then we wouldn't even have a duping problem, much less a "hacking" problem in regards to hackers spawning boxes....as nothing out of an ammo crate would generate a valid hash. But thats stuff to think about for the stand alone, I'm sure.

Hacking won't even be fixed in the stand alone. While Rocket will definitely design a more tightly controlled client to server system which doesn't allow for remote script execution, thats really not the only way to "hack", and my standing bet far as the stand alone goes is that it'll be hack free for about two weeks, then there will be hacks there, too. Simple facts are, all online games have hacks, and no one has ever designed an online game that couldn't be exploited or hacked in some manner.
  9. So I have some people on my server that have recently joined it. They mostly play straight up so I'm happy to have them, but there are a couple members of the clan that are constantly logging in and out of the server and the createvehicle.log for them shows them dropping an inordinate amount of placeable objects such as tents and sandbags and cat wire. Putting the two together, and given that these individuals all have around 40 - 100 ping to the server theres simply no rational explanation for their continued drops and reconnects, and adding in the amount of placeable objects they're placing (they've only been on the server a couple of days), all the indications pretty much point at duping, but, thats just based off the amount of objects they're placing...for a new group just hitting the server (I could understand someone moving from one server to another with stuff to place, but theres a place in my logs where two of this clans members drop 10 tents each (20 tents) in one go all under the same five or six minute time stamp). So the overall deal is, I'm fairly sure they're duping, but because I don't run a hack or anything that allows me to see any more than any other player, I have no idea where their camp is...so I can't prove it. What do I do? I can't just ban them because I know that constantly logging on and off is part of a duping method. Oddly one of them just got tagged by DayZ Anti-Hax for Object Access Flooding....not even sure what that is.

1.7.3 - Lets Wipe the Hive

Congratulations of course, but you are aware of the first rule of DayZ right? Perhaps "Days" survived is something that could be preserved, but I am of the distinct opinion that one persons personal accomplishments aren't more important than the total overall health of this mod. If you came into an alpha with an "I'll quit if they take my stuff" attitude, you may have joined the game a little too early. This Hive wipe is needed, its not the first one...if we get it, and it probably won't be the last either, even into the standalone I expect we'll find a few points where the development process requires all previous data to be dropped to gather new data. So again I'm not knocking your achievement there, I'm just saying I don't think it outweighs the importance of a healthy development environment for the mod.

Spawned IN a house - what now?

Its actually inwards towards the hallway. Not on the exterior walls. And thats really odd that you ended up with a Novy debug spawn in 1.7.2.5, I haven't seen one of those in several versions now.

Spawned IN a house - what now?

Ahh what version of DayZ was the server running? 1.7.1.5 and 1.7.2 did have a debug spawn in Novy in the codebase, they removed it in 1.7.2.3 I believe. I did get stuck in that a few times back in the older versions, there is a part of the house mesh where you can sort of wiggle your way out of it, but its tricky to find.

Theres always a point to a fresh start. What there is never a point to is apathy.
  14. Alchemy man. Seriously. If you want to always have a bike, I can guarantee you the primary reagent for ensuring you have a bike after a server restart is to have the Electro bus. It ALWAYS morphs into a bike.

Yeah but when you think about it I think Kamenka is probably the safest place to store your loot cause all anyone does when they get to Kamenka is go "AWW MAN KAMENKA WTF?" and run off and feed themselves to a zombie horde to try to get a spawn closer to the center. Tuck a few tents west of Kamenka and its likely no one will ever find them. Well...til now that I've mentioned it.

Geez just give me the ability to have a fist fight, while we're at it. Why can't I give someone a knuckle sandwich and conk them out cold like a zed does rather than having to kill people all the time? Sorry, completely off topic there.
  17. We have a White Hilux on our server that we've named the Buddha Truck because it occasionally sticks around after a restart, or some other vehicle we have before a restart morphs into a Hilux after the restart but generally only this one vehicle seems to have any semblance of normality and....it seems to be dealing with a lot of quantum temporal instability in regards to where it shows up, or why...but it generally shows up. Also for more interesting vehicle stuff 3 bikes in a warehouse = motorcycle after a restart Bus almost always = Bike after restart GAZ = ATV after restart But not always in that specific combonation...and, only in the Bus/Bike case, will you find the Bike in the exact position the Bus was in before the restart, the other situations are something akin to alchemy or magic, not sure why they happen, but put the right components together and you transmute them into something else with a server restart.....just they usually end up parked in an entirely different place in the area your original vehicle/vehicles were parked. Weird stuff, funny, but, getting somewhat tiresome too.

1.7.3 - Lets Wipe the Hive

An 85% majority so far. Thats a rare thing in a community like this. So far, sounds like most people think its high time for it.
  19. ChernoPTA

that thing more rare then a mountain dew

Uh the UAZ spawn at Alter Mountain always has 10 SVD mags on it as part of its base inventory. No SVD rifle though. That one is quite a bit rarer than the ammo. Not to spoil anything but in the current environment just log off at Alter Mountain where the UAZ spawns and wait for the server to reset and log back in....bang, 10 SVD mags and 5 RGO grenades and a few other things. Oh and a UAZ, if you care to repair it simply to lose it at next restart.

1.7.3 - Lets Wipe the Hive

When I say hive wipe I'm talking about a complete table drop for all instance id's and player id's. This means all servers and all players start fresh as if they've never played/never been played on. Just wanted to clarify on that for people that may not understand what I mean.
  21. ChernoPTA

1.7.3 - Lets Wipe the Hive

Uh, no, if the Hive is wiped, doesn't matter what version you login on, that stuff is gone. Hackers can ammo crate, and admins can ban them for it. I do it all the time. Whats more, the Hive can start tracking ammo crate spawns, and be far more accurate in identifying the original user.

1.7.3 - Lets Wipe the Hive

The context of your statement is somewhat confusing. Right now the largest producer of replicated weapons and items is the Hive itself and its database save state problems with DayZ 1.7.2.5. Sure lots of people dupe things intentionally, but since 1.7.2.5 was released I am sure that the amount of "duped" or replicated weaponry has multiplied by a factor of at least 10, completely without any input from players whatsoever. If 1.7.3 fixes the Hive save state issue, and weapons and items no longer replicate due to tent inventory states being a single save state from when the tent was originally placed and given its first "save", then the largest contributor to the explosion of replicated items is treated,....that is the disease that can be treated, as things stand, not a symptom. Far as preventing willful replication, again, with a clean slate that doesn't have tens of thousands of unintentionally replicated items in it, its a little easier to start tracking people who are replicating items with intent...so again, this isn't treating a symptom, its cleaning out the infection that is already present to make new infections far easier to spot and drill down on. They won't ever fix "duping" in this alpha, the client and server structure just isn't there to completely allow for unique ID checking for each single item. Perhaps in the standalone, but that doesn't apply in regards to the alpha mod.

1.7.3 - Lets Wipe the Hive

Eh re-gearing legit isn't a long drawn out process. I'm not sure why anyone should be concerned with their primary inventories. If you did it once you can do it again. Plus lets be honest if they did a Hive wipe and left inventories intact, people would just put their AS50 TWS's...that we need to get out of the Hive as it is, in their inventories, and the point of cleaning the slate and getting relevant and reliable alpha metrics is more or less lost.
  24. ChernoPTA

1.7.3 - Lets Wipe the Hive

Again I'll reiterate for those that are concerned with hackers. Hackers are far easier to detect at the database level when your database isn't cluttered with hundreds of thousands of replicated items by error of design. I'm not saying that will stop hackers from instantly spawning their high end gear back. What I'm saying is it will allow the Hive to identify which hackers are actually doing that, a little more reliably.
  25. ChernoPTA

1.7.3 - Lets Wipe the Hive

With a wipe, and some database level detection algorithms, anyone "hacking" their gear back in could be more reliably singled out and tracked, as compared to right now where almost everyone is guilty of having picked up a replicated item due to server restarts.
