First vs Third Person Discussion (Dslyecxi video)
Jamz replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Interesting, the blur would have to completely obscure vision over walls and around corners so I don't know how you would do it without making it aesthetically unacceptable. I thought the best way would be having the TPV pull in closer eventually to FPV when you got closer to a wall or corner so you couldn't physically see over or around. A blurring would have to completely shadow what was on the other side, was that what you mean? -

So what exactly does your choice of view say about you then, do you think? I'm interested. -

I would prefer to think that your choice says something about yourself. -

Well that is true, if there was never TPV then nobody would be arguing for it, but it's in so it's too late now. I've played FPV games as my view of choice since Wolfenstein 3D and I can't think of any other similar game that I've played online in TPV. In fact other than RPG's/MMO's there is none. I've always played FPV because it's actually the view I prefer for any game which involves shooting things. BUT I think DayZ is different to all those games. To me it's a new genre, a combination of other game types and I found that for me TPV actually suits the feel of it better than FPV. That's not to say it's the only view I ever or would ever use and if it was removed then I would play FPV. What I'm dead against is removing it without at least trying to mod TPV and fix the issues, to me that's lazy and the players who play TPV are owed more than that. The whole point is trying, if it doesn't work then so be it. I'd like to see what they come up with. -
Why you need DayZ standalone argue points.

I don't think this or any other of the related threads are necessary now. People who put forward ideas have done so and the thread has just become people desperately trying to convice people that their way is right like in a school playground... it's not a discussion anymore so I think most people have left. Obviously TPV is being looked at so all we on the forum can do is sit and wait to see what gets done. -

I'm interested to see exactly how TPV has been changed. Good blog though, that inventory system looks more complicated. I wonder if you can still lose things accidently by moving them between sections? -

Well they are trying to, all the advocates for the outright removal of TPV so far seem to be 'I only want to play in FPV' players. They want to dictate that those who use or prefer TPV play always only in FPV. That, I think, is the crux of the argument raging around the original discussion, which has died again now. I wait for it to reappear. -
Yeah, I guess to me there is no such thing as a hardcore player, only a hardcore game.

Beans for a constructive 1st ever post  :beans: I think the first idea would run into the same problems as seem to be associated with 'blanking out' players outside of direct line of sight, as it's essentially the same but with a black overlay. The second idea would make for an interesting version of the mod, but I think too far from traditional zombie lore for vanilla. -

Thats what I was thinking, situations where it's unlikely for there to be an encounter with another player. This way, the sense of anxiety of being in areas where players are regularly found could be hightened by being in FPV. It would become associated with danger in game. When travelling or resting in the wilderness where there are less players and zombies, the player would likely relax more in TPV. That doesn't mean of couse he wouldn't be in danger ;) and he could go into FPV at any time. -

Maybe then rest state in a city is fixed to it can't be used to scan the area, also rest state is always sitting or leaning so that it couldn't be used by snipers without being seen, when hiding behind low walls like those of rooftops? Using distance when determining whether to render objects like players and vehicles could be good if it is possible to implement. I wouldn't use an autorun function probably, but would it be exploitable if when at a full run the view panned out to TPV, auto or not? -
One thing I like about DayZ is that everyone starts with, and to a degree continues with, and equal chance. Lower end weapons are arguably the most deadly and everyone has almost instant access to them, it's a great equalizer between players. By the above definitions I am a hardcore player myself, playing only the vanilla game as a lone wolf (so blood bagging is not an option) but I try to avoid player contact and use third person view sometimes. I think the definition is rather a grey area and a generalisation, but there are many players who would rather have a watered down survival experience and play on a modified version of DayZ and they are who I would consider more casual players.

Perhaps when in rest state in a built up area could be just in first person, so a player would have to head into the wild to see themselves? It might have the added bonus of getting people out of the city once in a while if they camp there? Also there could be a TPV just for foot travel locked to an autorun function but without mouselook, so you could use numberpad to look around while travelling. -
You've asked me the same thing on the other thread, lets take this over there.

I do see what you are saying. However even if the only way to do it is to split the server types to either or, then I still believe it should be kept in some form. If the FPV servers don't populate then the players have spoken and it's up to you to encourage them to play on the FPV servers. I'd rather see something done about TPV so mixed view servers are viable, which seems to be what's happening, so I'm waiting for any information as to what is being done. My idea would be to pull the cam close in to an over the shoulder view about a foot behind and head height. camera movement as it is now but unable to rise past head height giving a red faction armageddon style view (but a little tighter). Switching between TPV and FPV bound to a button for full viewing mode in FPV to be switched into instantly. Lastly, for the situation highlighted earlier when facing the wall and having the cam swing out; either removing non static objects from view until the head has cleared the wall, or making a viewing mirror visible to the other player (as used by the military to see around corners) so a visual object can give the player away. It's a start, and I'm sure the dev team have even more ideas. Removal of a view completely should only be a last resort, this has always been my standpoint from the very beginning of all this. Edit - to save posting on another thread for Dsi1, another idea would be the perimeter around built up areas forcing FPV. To be honest, I'm no software developer or game writer so I don't know what is possible or not, only the dev team will. -
I can see many possibilities for fixing it, but nobody knows if they will work or not until they are tried.

I don't think anyone ever said it was fine, simply to not remove it entirely. -
This just highlights our difference of opinion as to whether TPV can be fixed. If it can then it wouldn't matter if AI used it or not, so it's the exploits not the view itself which gives the advantage. Against AI the game is in no way difficult with either view at the moment, I rely more on hearing than vision in towns anyway. I'd say the AI actually had more of an advantage than the player, being able to hit through walls and detect you through them too.
-
Potentially I'd agree presently, with an exploitable TPV, but not fundamentally. I don't see how either view makes it harder to play the game, just give different experiences perhaps?
-
Er actually it was certain FPV only types who suggested that FPV was related to difficulty first, if you check back through the posts... Plainly neither view actually changes the difficulty of the game in any way though.

Do you play on first or third person servers?

Jamz replied to Wayze's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Now some of this I do agree with. The only point of this and all the other similar threads as far as I'm concerned is to show the level of interest about FPV/TPV, not to to decide which is 'best' but to show it is a point worth discussing. Although I use both views and would have no problem only playing in only FPV (as I've said before) I find myself having to protect the idea of trying to fix the exploits in TPV to keep it in, something that is important to me, from people who call for it's outright removal. I'm not against its removal, as long as it's the only way. As far as I am concerned (as you know) the actual poll results are irrelevant. That's my opinion, as yours is above, and The SA and mod will proceed regardless. I trust the people behind it, they've done fine so far.
