My 2 cents is that it is always good to get any feature in early to test. It will help with deciding which features should be reworked, left alone or thrown out. I really only see 1 practical use for dogs which is "guard dog" for a camp site if they were dangerous enough. As for less practical uses, some players might just get dogs to reduce paranoa if they play alone a lot or see it as a challange to see how long they can keep it alive. Still something the expands gameplay. At the moment game is getting reduced to gear out and hunt humans b/c nothing else to do after you have gear.
