The name of the game is survival by any means necessary. If you do not like the any means necessary part, then this isn't the game for you. You're right, this isnt CoD...where your friends and foes are clearly defined, and social interaction is at the level of apes, if apes could talk and were racist. This is a sandbox, where you have to earn your friends, and pick your fights.

very low down...the arma community was pretty small and everyone knew almost everyone else... Only occasionally when there were sales somewhere would we see an number of new players arriving, otherwise new players were just trickling in. The single-player often put a lot of people off playing mp (not to mention the division of the community with mods). To me, for the last year the core of the community were the TAW, 7thcav, 15thMEU guys, who mainly hosted Insurgency/Domination servers.
