Another option would be a move similar to the "shove" in Left 4 Dead. Maybe it would deduct a small amount of stamina every time. At the very least it would allow you SOME option instead of just being defenseless.

Perhaps, but there doesn't appear to be any other options.

I'd buy 1 during the Alpha (maybe at the end to be honest) and then 2 when it is out of beta.

Same thing here. I just spawn into "Wilderness". Empty hills that appear endless.

Same here. I am on 1.5.8 and it just started doing this tonight. 1 map was okay, but all others I try are empty wilderness. One time I saw another character but just once. Now I'm all alone on empty green rolling hills with the sound of crickets, birds and wind. No other features apparent except overcast cloud cover. I can run and have an AK-47. I see other players chat.

Agreed. The most basic combat strategy in a world of zombies is to be stealthy. This usually means opting for a melee weapon instead of a gun. Fundamental.
