KarlMonster: ... Rule #1 in DayZ is "You are going to die. Get used to the idea."

Mick Ginger: "Yeah, that HAS to be rule #1."

    newbie questions

A mechanic *specialist*?? I don't see the need. If you have a coupla guys, it won't be unusual for one to have a toolkit. I wouldn't waste space in anyone's pack lugging around tires, scrap metal, or a jerry can. You can find those things in just about every town. Especially if you are looking for something useful, like beans. Now if you already have a vehicle, then I might have one guy lug engine parts around. Last time I had a vehicle, I needed parts, and sure enough, couldn't find engine parts even in industrial areas. Vehicle first, then worry about feeding it.

    Handling dirty liars?

"Friendly" but looting your kills, is not friendly. Seriously, I am a DayZ pacifist (if everyone else will leave me the hell alone!), but I have no problem shooting someone for looting my kill. That's a violation of fundamental MMO etiquette. That's the kind of behaviour I expect to see in free-to-play games - where young kids that don't know any better learn bad habits. What you kill is yours, and anyone that disagrees is already your enemy. That guy was probably out of ammo, or trying to get some measure of leniency from you. How would I handle a liar? I haven't survived any liars. I've only come across two players at close range that didn't shoot at me. One was so helpful that I suspected his motives, the other never said a word.
  3. Yep, you're basically set. A second morphine would be better. Another can of food, bandage, and another water bottle wouldn't go amiss - but those you are likely to find along the way, depending on how frequently you stop to scavenge. You don't really need more mags, ammo will be easy to find, and gunfire will draw more Zed. You'll find that cooking the animals you find will give you more blood that canned food.

    Civilian Cloths?

Also, civ clothing can change your backpack. I tried it on and ended up with a coyote backpack again. Fortunately, I don't think I lost anything much.

Hoarder Instinct- How bad do you have it?

I don't live long enough to "hoard" more than whatever food & water I can carry.

    Reverend Maynard

That warn't me. I'm just curious if the Rev was actually MJK. At any rate, its a much better name than Solid Snake, Hyubasa, or any of the "wolf" permutations. Edit: no, his name is JesusFood. The wafer bit the priest back.

    Six Updater doesn't list 1.7.2.5

If you continue to use Six Launcher/Updater, you can't join 1.7.2.5 servers until the devs approve the 1.7.2.5 hotfix patch for it. Since I have just today seen the same graphical glitch on a 1.7.2.5 server that 1.7.2.5 was supposed to address, I'll venture that it's not going to be approved soon. There should still be 1.7.2.4 servers around, and you can join those. Or you should be able to. If you are determined to play on a 1.7.2.5 server, then you might install DayZ Commander, and use that instead. It takes a little bit to understand how to use it right, but when you've figured it out, its a very handy application.

What do you want to NOT be realistic?

I would like garments to count against allowable weight - within reason. [A heavy jacket could keep you warm in rain, but not underwater.] The weight of a jacket would count against you, but a load-bearing vest might give additional slots, and maybe a small bonus to ammunition weight that can be carried. Weaponry should definitely be real weight and bulk. Ammunition is amazingly heavy because its mostly lead and copper. Carrying two primaries without cramming one in your pack should be possible, so that you no longer risk losing/destroying one - but one of them should occupy most of your large item slots. Car parts should take more space and be appreciably heavy. If you need to go scavenge engine parts, you should be forced to travel light to be able to carry them at all. So no carrying 4 tires when you only have a coyote pack. I would accept a relatively light "tool roll" even though we're talking about tools for engine work, sheetmetal work, tire repair, electrical systems, etc. Oh, and the hunting knife should not be required. You should be able to use the hatchet, but at about 50% efficiency. So it would be useful on a cow, but useless on a rabbit. And how can matches be this rare? On your chart of time to find items, matches are found out at around hour 5+. Every single kitchen or restaurant should have matches. Um... what else do I have to bitch about? I do want a red lens flashlight, but that would be hard to implement, and I'd probably be just as visible with a red chemlight. Oh, and epi-pens and auto-injectors shouldn't take a full inventory slot. They should take up the same slot as painkillers and/or matches since that's the kind of gear you keep dry in a protective container. The crossbow is neat, but pathetic. Each bolt that you find is only one shot, and you can't recover them from the dead Zed. Each bolt unit should be five shots or more, and you should be able to recover some from bodies. Oh, and drinking Diet Pepsi should make you vomit. OK, just kidding. (Sorta.)

How To Heal A Broken Bone

I was on a pretty full server, and it took something like 20 minutes for the morphine injector to work. My client kept running the bandaging animation instead of actually giving the auto-injection. Fortunately, I was not in a hot spot. [And basically I just wanted to bump a useful thread.]

    WOO HOO Free supply truck!!

I don't know about random despawning. After I got a surprise disconnect from the server, my V35 was gone. I had been swapping supplies with it when I DCed. Just a heads up that there are no guarantees. Don't leave anything in the vehicle that you can't live without.

    Why didnt anyone tell me!

I have to agree. You fired at an unarmed opponent, but they are the "bad guy"?

    Why didnt anyone tell me!

Yes, chowing on animals is great. It sounds like you were at the half-constructed building on the outskirts of Cherno. You can find nifty stuff there, but I normally don't risk going to Cherno/Electro/Tents unless I'm already dying, since there are usually players there who will help you respawn. But I agree with you, many of the new player guides gloss over some useful facts - like you should always check your list of available commands with mousewheel (or whatever your binding is) to see what actions may be possible. Hatchets are pretty common, hunting knives turn up once in a great while, but matches are hard to come by. Once I have knife and matches, I spend most of my time hunting game. And I can beat your story. I was dying of thirst, ticking down from 3500 blood. All I could find was jerry cans, ammunition, bandages, and an empty water bottle (Noooooooooooo! Why do you hate me God?). Then finally I found a hatchet, and started out to go bleary-eyed Zed hunting to see if I couldn't find a soda that way. At 3000 blood, I almost didn't notice that I was walking past a well. One un-empty water bottle later, I would still need to find food, but I was temporarily saved.
  13. I was waiting for a Steam sale to get ARMA II, but DayZ forced my hand. So, technically I also just bought the game for DayZ. The way I see it, the difficulty level setting is temporarily broken, and set to "Bang Head Here." My strategy is much like Nicebasi's. I don't need anything from the big towns, so I don't go there unless server population is very low. So long as BattleEye doesn't do an IW, I expect things to (very slowly) improve. That can't be said of the forums. There are brain-dead things here too.
  14. Certainly it will. But the way I see it, that's part of the problem. Let's see if I can explain it better this way; How is it that the only Zompocalypse survivors are SpecOps guys who are familiar with all hardware? I say that if you *have* to have it in the game, then it should weigh the same as in real life. Your buddies will enjoy having you around, since lugging that cannon will make you zombie bait.

    Version 95885 download help

I've just started using DayZ Commander, and that's how I realized that there are three software versions to match. ARMA II DayZ BattleEye The big catch is that you cannot properly join a server if you have a different version of the first two. The ARMAII version is a little forgiving, you may not have to match it precisely. Obviously, you have to match the DayZ version, and BattleEye may not kick you right away if you have an old version. The trick is to know which versions you have, and match them to the server that you are trying to join. Among the many servers out there, there are several different combinations of software versions, so it should be possible to find one that accepts the versions that you have. DayZ Commander can help with this, but it may take some tweaking to understand the situation.
