Gaming mouse. Is it worth it?
CJBlackbird replied to void.false@gmail.com's topic in Technology/Programming
I saw you mention you were worried about whether they were worth the money. Firstly, the only gaming mouse I've ever owned, a Razer Boomslang 2007 Collectors Edition, which I've had for around 3 years now has been great value for money, I think it cost £30 at the time, it came in a really nice tin, with nice padding in it, and the driver disc. It has a really nice long cable with a gold plated USB connector. With 3 years of use, the only wear is a slight bit of rubbing on the rubber material that covers button 1 + 2. Everything else is still flawless and nothing has ever gone wrong with it. So build quality and are you getting your moneys worth with a gaming mouse? If you buy a Razer, as most people would probably recommend, YES! The other great thing is the ability to map keys and stuff. And if you're into aesthetics with some gaming mice they have fancy programmable lights that you can play around with, which personally I'm a fan of. I wouldn't bother a mouse that has changeable weights, seems a bit pointless and they're always expensive. Just make sure you're getting a nice DPI, I think 3500 is the point to aim for at the moment and make sure it looks like it'll be comfortable and have enough butons to be functional. -
I think that quite simply, whilst stealth kills are fun in some games, stylistically it isn't really fitting with DayZ,

Making DayZ harder (less bandits?)
CJBlackbird replied to Snablas's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The way to make this game harder in my opinion is to design the game so that players need to go back to the cities more often. Right now all you need to technically reach end game is: A hatchet (to kill animals and chop wood) A box of matches (to turn said wood into a fire) A water bottle (to constantly refill and rehydrate yourself) Anything more than that is a luxury. Now instantly there are at least two opportunities for the game to get harder already; The box of matches could be limited to say having only 10 matches. The hatchet will eventually get dull and need to be sharpened. There's a wide range of things that could make you need to head back to the city, illness, the need for dry clothes, boredom... we could go on. I think making the need to go back to the city is more important than making the woods dangerous. -
They need to get John Murphy onboard for the soundtrack, ala 28 days later.

Now I'm running a fairly modest setup with a sapphire Radeon hd 6570 and I had the known graphical issues in airfields, and around medical tents and such. However, I recently did two things to my machine, I installed the release candidate of windows 8 and ran that and DayZ all from a single SSD (before I had windows 7 installed on an SSD and a spinning disk where all my games were installed). For some reason I no longer have any graphical problems. Would be interested to know if anyone else is running windows 8 and has had the same outcome as me?

What Exactly is Dayz & a Few Questions
CJBlackbird replied to brettuk's topic in New Player Discussion
It is a MODification of the game ArmA 2, in order to play DayZ you would have to buy ArmA 2 on steam for £25, and install the mod, which is easily done via software called 'six updater' or 'dayz commander'. You should be made aware that this is only a mod, the mod itself is free to play. However, the developers will be releasing an official standalone version within the next few months, so you might want to wait for that. -
Suggestions for the DayZ standalone - thinking outside of the limitations of an Arma 2 mod.
CJBlackbird replied to ruarz's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Love the zombie idea, infact the whole thread is just brilliance. -
You won't make money on standalone or Arma3....

Hmmm, I'm going to bet all my beans owned past future and present that they will make a lot of money on this. -
An idea for distinguishing bandits and friendlies.
CJBlackbird posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
This is a bit of a silly idea but actually might work and lead to some interesting gameplay. My thought is rather than your skin magically changing on becoming a bandit or a hero, what if you had a flag attached to your backpack that you could choose to display or not. So for example if you're friendly its white, if you're not it's red. This is where a bit more depth gets added to the idea.... I propose that actually you get to choose whether you display a white or red flag, and obviously you've got the choice of whether you want to have a flag at all. If you choose to have a white flag and you have been killing players, you could perhaps have specks of blood accumulate upon the flag, which would not be particularly easy to notice from afar. Maybe at the start you don't actually have the materials to even display a flag and you have to find old clothing and chop a piece of wood to make it? Probably a silly idea, let me know. -

Good point. Idea ruined! -

I think some people would show the red flag, theres a lot of people playing this game for the PvP elements. Thats not the point though, thats actually the most boring part of the post. You've missed the part about if you do show a white flag and still kill people you'll get blood on your flag eventually turning it red. Infact, maybe everyone starts with the white flag, and it could work directly with the humanity meter in game already. -
I've read most pages of this 35 page long topic, and I haven't seen it asked anywhere. Realistically, how many players could a server have if it does use a slightly changed ArmA3 engine? I've been playing a bit on the 80 player server, and whilst at times it can be very frustrating it can also be super fun. The more the merrier it seems to me, to an extent.

I think you're playing the wrong game if thats what you want surely?

So DayZ Standalone will apparently be running on the ArmA 3 engine. Now I don't have a super powerful GPU, I've had to switch down from a 7970 to a 6570 because I'm running a hackintosh and wanted a card that works out the box with it as the 6570 does. So while I can play DayZ I'm only running it on roughly medium settings as Ultra gives me around 10fps. So this is a rough idea of the system requirements of ArmA 2 and Arma 3. CPU Arma 2 = Pentium D @ 3.0 Ghz Arma 3 = Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.0 Ghz GPU Arma 2 = Radeon x1800 Arma 3 = Radeon HD 3870 RAM Arma 2 = 1Gb Arma 3 = 2Gb I guess it sort of shows that your hardware requirements are doubled. Anyway, I highly doubt that DayZ would actually run in a reasonable state on that minimum setup, and please don't flame cause I'm genuinely intrigued and don't know myself, but how optimized is the DayZ mod as it is? and can we expect ArmA 3 to be less demanding than ArmA 2 realistically is?
-
No it's a hackintosh, its basically just a dual booting machine. So it's a desktop that I've built myself that can boot both Windows 7 and Mac OSX, or any operating system for that matter.

This sounds cool, where are you located? I've been watching a group of guys hunting bandits on YouTube, I'm pretty sure they are ex military and it looks so fun.

Sweet, that makes life a bit easier, thanks.

Your DayZ development priorities?
CJBlackbird replied to frantix (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I agree with all your points, and have made similar posts. Unfortunately, I'm always told that ALPHA IS FOR PUTTING IN BROKEN STUFF, BETA IS FOR FIXING THE BROKEN STUFF. -
Wow! what server do these guys play on?

It would be easy to shrug off hackers except that...
CJBlackbird replied to Taphonomy's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Me and my buddy both suffer from this, I've got a pretty good quad core i5 and its installed on an ssd, my friend has a hex core amd installed on a slightly slower ssd than mine and we both have roughly the same long loading time. Edit. I'm not saying that we've got fantastic machines, but they should and can handle this game easily, i'm sure its server side as it varies wildly depending on how many people are on the server? -

CJBlackbird replied to Taphonomy's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yeah I'm having to wait for about 5 minutes a time I'd say, the more people on the server the longer I wait. -
Obviously this makes you harder to spot for other players, but does it make you harder to spot for zombies?

So I'm one of those many that spent £25 on a game to play this mod and to now be permanently banned for no obvious reason, though from looking through the forums and a bit of time googling I have come to the conclusion it was because I thought I'd update my ARMA 2 version through Dayz Commander. Before we get onto my thoughts I'd just like to mention that before the devs add anything new to this mod they need to fix a few things; The absolutely ridiculously absurd amount of hacking is just well... absolutely ridiculously absurd. I personally really miss the global chat, it's automatically made everyone in the game far more hostile than in any other point in the mods short lifetime. I also know that there are thousands of people with similar battleeye problems to mine, so maybe its time to switch to a new anti cheat engine. Obviously the graphics errors are also terribly game breaking at the minute. Let me just say that this is a fantastic game, for one simple reason, the concept. Stranded survivor, forced to loot to survive, extremely wary of zombies and not knowing whether humans are friends or foe. - how you play the game is up to you. Although recently, actually the games got a bit crap.... partly because every single human you see is now a foe (which i blame partly on removing global chat), the only friendly human is a dead or weaponless one. So actually, and I know what I'm about to say will get me flamed, but my review is a lot shorter than I thought it would be. Simply because actually the only reason this game is worth playing is because it throws you into a situation that no other game has done before. The game actually is pretty shocking, there are so many bugs that have needed to be fixed for a while; Zombies running diagonally Zombies swimming Zombies climbing ladders Zombies attacking through walls Zombies randomly spawning next to you Zombies randomly breaking your bones near full health Having to stand upright to go out of a door Having the most awful inventory system ever Again the graphics bug must be mentioned In the name or realism, why is there not a stamina system and why are there always only zombies around the buildings you want to enter, they should be more sporadicly and randomly dispersed. Just to wrap it up then, I'm really excited that DayZ is getting a standalone version, I will definitely be purchasing the alpha as soon as it goes live. However, I'm very worried that they are planning to release it this year given the mods current state, but then again I don't know what the devs are holding back. I also wish that it was being done on a different engine as Arma 2 is surely still the most hardware intensive game there is? My relationship with DayZ is 30% absolute love & indulgence, 70% hate.

Banned for no reason, guessing it was updating to new ARMA 2 Revision, so here are my thoughts on the mod as it is.
CJBlackbird replied to CJBlackbird's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yep thats exactly what happened it appears. I think that this post can be used as proof, that not everyone complaining about being banned is a hacker. Thanks all.
