How many good people do you meet before you get shot?
Aftershok replied to oleg86@msn.com's topic in New Player Discussion
Most people you'll meet these days, especially those with weapons, are bandits. There isn't really a number you meet before you get shot, you just have to find someone and hope they don't kill you just for your beans. -
There are some settings that you can use to optimise; here are the key ones you should change to boost fps. Video memory should be DEFAULT (not low, med, high) Put shadow detail on max (better visuals and better performance, win/win situation) Turn off post-processing effects 3d/interface resolution should be the same, or 3d at +1 from interface Also put your visibility down as servers have this limited anyway You can also tweak your config, but with a PC like that you should be able to get decent fps.

Then bandit groups would also get the bonuses as well and a game like DayZ shouldn't offer 'perks', some people like to work alone. Interesting idea but if perks are given for being in groups, they should not boost things like reload speed/hits before bone breaks

Try regular ArmA 2 if you're waiting for DayZ

Also try out Project Reality, one of the best mods apart from DayZ i've played for any game. -
Running Through the forrest...
Aftershok replied to flappjackin's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
It depends on your initial humanity level, and on his humanity level. Did the kill come up as a 'murder' or 'bandit killed', if it's a bandit kill then you have nothing to worry about, if it's a murder than you will have lower humanity although it will recover. -
Looking for someone to play with

Your mouse should control looking up and down, check your controls to make sure look up/down is bound to the mouse y-axis. Sometimes other devices can interefere, check it hasn't been bound to a joystick or gamepad etc. To aim you can right click to sight in, or walk rather than run by using the shift key (double tap to fix) as you can't aim/shoot when running.

/troll The game is already hardcore enough in that if you die, you lose everything. Adding the burden of knowing you'll have to pay if you die will take away a large part of the game. Having 20 minutes at the start to 'get your shit together' would make the coast an even bigger deathmatch than it already is rather than improving survival, you aren't going to try and work with someone who could potentially backstab you and cost you money, not to mention trolls coming down to wreak havoc on newly spawned players. Leave the starting/death mechanics as they are, except for maybe adding a 15 minute timer between respawns.

Low fps on decent rigs is due to the game's poor optimisation, ensure that you're video memory in game is set to 'default' not low, med, high etc... Also, turning shadows to max can help optimise and in some cases, running your 3d res at one higher than native can increase performance. Look for arma 2 optimisation guides on google for further tips

Steam version automatically updates on major patches but the two versions are pretty similar, it's cheaper off BIS online store at the moment. Some keys can be added to steam as a retail version although I'm not sure whether it works with ArmA, having it with steam is easier but DayZ will work with both. The Steam summer sale is meant to start soon so you could always hold out for it.

Hi Merkin, To play the game you are required to have ArmA 2 & Arma 2 : Operation Arrowhead (making up combined operations), it is possible to use the arma 2 free version to run the mod but is a more complicated installation process so it is advisable to use the full retail version of the game. Currently ArmA 2:CO is available on steam for £25 or off the Bohemia Interactive website for £15 as they have a sale on. It's well worth the money, not just for DayZ but also the base game and the array of other mods available. http://dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=2085 Here is a guide for actually installing the mod, the easiest way is through a program known as six launcher although it can be done manually relatively easily. If you need any other help feel free to PM

Did Arma II's Franchise get saved by DayZ Mod?
Aftershok replied to Igor (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
By no means did it 'save' the franchise, it's always been strong. It's just opened the game to a new player-base. -

There are no daytime only servers, some US servers run at different times to the timezones they are in so have a look around; a few have it in their names but try trial and error joining them and checking.

When are helicopters coming back?
Aftershok replied to albinl's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yeah they do spawn in other locations i.e. Rog castle roof and Cherno north hospital although they're normally gone pretty quickly when vehicles reset -
Bicycles: ' i reckon i could jump that'
Aftershok replied to Cappy (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
and don't ride your bike through cherno, it was definitely a bad idea looking back on it. -
Yes - but add a feature to allow people to select player models so not everyone looks the same and there is at least some distinguishing factor between people

Great work so far! It doesn't seem to have fixed the morphing problem with losing backpack items, I just morphed from bandit - PMC again and lost an ALICE pack full of supplies so perhaps it needs another look
