Firearm Weapon Parts, Firearms, & Ability to Strip Down Firearms
NavyCuda replied to gesundheitk's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Firearms are rarely ever stripped down to their base components except at an armoury or during routine maintenance. It is highly unlikely that you will find spare parts just laying around. Someone running an AR15/M16, however may carry with them a spare bolt, firing pin and cam pin, but that is just insurance. What is more likely is that you could come across firearms that are damaged and be able to salvage good working parts from them, but this still lacks in my opinion because you are more likely to find an operational firearm that just needs ammunition. I think that regular maintenance should be a part of DayZ though, as you would be relying completely on your firearm for your survival. If you were to neglect it and fail to clean it regularly it may jam, or in the worst case suffer a irreversible failure. I'm pretty sure that anyone who has served their armed forces(I have not) will tell you that you clean your rifle, before you eat, or do anything else. -

My auto run is the carbide tip from a cutter bit, just heavy enough to keep the key pressed down. -
There was no error with my original reply, just your response to it. You made a post that was not factually correct, it was necessary for me to correct that error. You can argue here with me until we're both dead, but the fact remains you made a comment that was incorrect and I don't want incorrect information to be presented unchallenged. You've made your own incorrect assumptions about me, so clearly we're both guilty. Quite the opposite. I didn't raise my hand to answer a question unless I was reasonable sure of the answer I was giving. When I was enthusiastic about the subject, the teachers would rarely call on me because my answers were always correct and more than one student needs to be engaged in a classroom environment. You originally brought up the weapons as an example, or whatever the semantics of what you want to call what you said. You posted something that was not correct, I do not like seeing incorrect information about my hobby being paraded as factual. If the devs feel that the experience of realism is important to DayZ, then it is more likely we will see jamming and less likely we'll see reduced accuracy. This would have been a much better example to make, but it is not the example you made. The example you made was incorrect, you failed to recognize that point and instead we got into this discussion. No, I would say this is more like an adult providing factual information to a child, and that child refusing to accept their error. You are trying to deflect that error by claiming such errors are acceptable in a video game. Perhaps to you, but not to me and any time I see incorrect information posted about firearms, I will, without hesitation provide corrections. So far the weapons presented in Arma2 and DayZ are well modeled and fairly accurately simulate the behavior of the firearms and their cartridges. There are a number of other things that I could nit-pick, but I don't. As someone who will be spending money on DayZ - The standalone, and it is common knowledge that the devs comb these forums, I will at every oppertunity provide factual information in relation to firearms and their operation and hopefully in return the Devs will provide more realistic firearm mechanics. Having a desire to see something correctly represented in digital format does not mean I am interested in joining the forces, or even entertaining the idea of taking the life of human or animal. I enjoy the mechanical aspects of firearms and how they work. No, having both would not be useful because it would be incorrect for the firearm to mechanically lose accuracy in between services, however a fatigued shooter undoubtedly would have accuracy problems. My original reply never had anything to do with the OP, I've never denied that. My reply was to point out your error, but rather than be a man about it and accept that something you said was incorrect, you're debating me over the merits of posting a reply to a reply of the OP. Internet forums are for discussion, if you are going to discuss something, please do your best to ensure what you are saying is as correct as possible. I did brag a little didn't I, but a fact is a fact, I know how to shoot proficiently.

DayZ is built on a military simulator that strives for a measurable degree of accuracy. As a firearms enthusiast, it is important to me that DayZ continues to build on that accuracy and to represent firearms and their cartridges correctly. In other areas I've made some posts regards the blood damage being the same between the STANAG magazine fed firearms, as the different barrel lengths would effect velocity, muzzle energy and obviously the bullet drop. Another example is that sub-sonic 5.56x45 does not have enough gas pressure to operate the action, yet non-suppressed firearms in DayZ/Arma2 still function correctly, never mind the fact that a subsonic loading in a 5.56mm diameter projectile is not going to have very much muzzle energy. Call it whatever you will, a portion of your comment was correct and a portion was not. I can agree that from a game engine perspective it is probably easier to gradually reduce a firearms accuracy over time than to add an additional animation to clear a jam and having a random chance beyond a certain round count that the firearm will jam. Then explain to me why you took such a negative stance towards my comment, when all I wanted to do was correct and support your hypothetical mechanic for dealing with firearms in DayZ. That link is actually a great example, and I never even thought about leather. I rarely ever consider leather to be animal hide, even though I know it is. However I must point out that the use of leather usually pertains to some of the requirements of the shooter. Examples would be a leather cheek riser(I don't use cheek risers, I don't need cheek wield to shoot straight), leather slings, leather holsters and leather gloves. In fact I use leather gloves and leather holsters. Your bunny fur comment seemed to be geared more towards the superstitious use of the hide to increase accuracy, not as a physical device to tune the rifle to the shooter. So I guess to some degree, I have to agree with your bunny fur comment, as poorly presented as it was. Although off topic, this is a discussion that I am enjoying. Discussions are important, and to discount this discussion between us because it is out of the scope of the original post seems illogical because we are discussing things that really should be considered in the standalone.

As soon as the projectile leaves the muzzle it begins to lose velocity because there is no longer any propellant to accelerate it. When a cartridge is being tested/designed/reloaded, one of the standard tests is to use a chronograph to accurately measure the velocity of the projectile as it leaves the muzzle. Using some of the parameters that are available, such as the weight of the projectile, the diameter of the projectile and the velocity it is possible to calculate the muzzle energy in either ft/lbs or joules. Even though I prefer metric, reloading is pretty much all in standard so I use ft.lbs. My m14 clone produces roughly 2200+ ft/lbs of muzzle energy. As the velocity decreases the drop becomes more pronounced and the energy available in the projectile is less, because it has already given some of the energy up to friction and gravity. So, considering that ArmA 2 already fairly accurately models bullet drop, you can see that the drop gets progressively worse beyond 500m so it is reasonable to assume the damage model follows suit.

Sometimes it really hurts trying to understand how ignorant people can be. My comment was in relation to a comment you made. This is a discussion, therefore my comment, in relation to yours is valid to this discussion. Let me quote you and highlight the relevant area. I have real world experience with firearms and I can tell you, that a few thousand rounds is going to have no effect on the accuracy of a firearm. You might have just been using this as an anology for changes that will likely come with the standalone but the fact remains a portion of your comment is flawed. My reply was to point out that flaw, as well as support the point where you were correct, that jamming becomes more likely as the round count between cleaning increases. It seems to me, that the issue isn't the that the conversation is extending beyond the scope of the original post, but that you have some personal issues with firearms. Any competent shooter will tell you that superstitious idols provide no tangible benefit to the shooter, where as practice and dedication to the sport does. I do find it somewhat disturbing though, that you would suggest skinning an animal and attaching a portion of its hide to a firearm. Perhaps you may wish to seek professional help?

I wasn't bragging, I was using real world experience to indicate a known operational round count from the perspective of an enthusiast, if such a mechanic were implemented. By providing background information that supports my comment I am qualifying my comment. This game does deal with firearms as part of its content, and as a firearms enthusiast it is important to me that they are accurately portrayed to increase my immersion into the game.

And so it slowly dawns on me... Dayz sucks.
NavyCuda replied to xdarc's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The alpha is the perfect place to get trained up for the Standalone, while gear is still readily available. What is the reason for expecting so much content from a game that is in alpha status that started as a pet project? Even in its current form DayZ represents what the 90's did for us experienced gamers. How cool was it to fire phasers and give orders as Capt. Kirk in Star Trek 25th Anniversary? How about Indianapolis 500: The Simulation on one floppy disk for Dos? The original Command & Conquer and the smash that was Red Alert. Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, I recently purchased on Steam to reminisce. The 90's represented the best achievement in gaming because the technology was moving so slowly that the story, the immersion of the game was essential to its success. As the technology began to progress more rapidly we saw the development of 3D games and modem/online multiplayer games. I certainly enjoyed the Quake and Unreal Tournement bloodbath multiplayer games. In my opinion the technology for presenting the story and characters started to stagnate by about 2000. I won't dispute that graphics have gotten better since 2000, but how has flashly graphics ever improved story telling? DayZ represents a 90's style innovation in gaming. DayZ has managed to make your character valuable enough to physically get your heart beating hard when a situation is getting out of control. Most games there is some way of recovering your character, or reloading at your last save point. In DayZ, you might have the prospect of a 8km hike back to your body and the chance that it won't even be there anymore. DayZ seems to have attracted a number of players who don't understand what surviving means, those people will eventually filter out, but I believe that DayZ will be left with a large enough loyal fanbase to keep the standalone profitable. I hope to see in the standalone, the ability to convert the offroad pickup into a technical, or having to collect a bunch of scrap metal and construct a still for purifying water for a large group of survivors. Perhaps have a funnel in your toolbelt and fill canteens when it is raining. Back in the Alpha, I always have something to do. Sometimes its just me playing, or my wife and I and we do laps of the map collecting gear for our group. It never hurts to stockpile. Maintaining a fleet of vehicles, rotating parking slots and recovering stolen vehicles becomes a full time job. I play on one server, and you get to know the regulars that way, you figure out the areas they like to go through and then you ambush them or die trying. DayZ represents the ability to digitally wake up our hunting and survival instinct, I doubt any other game can do that this well. -
I have a few thousand zombie kills with the DMR. I pretty much will not engage survivors unless they are within 500m. Non-agroed zombie kills at 500-800m are still quite easy with the DMR, but under 500m I have lead and hold over pretty much worked out.

Well it should be realistic. Cleaning interval of about 1000rounds for the AR15/M16. Lifespan is somewhere over 20,000 shots plus before there is anything major to have to worry about. There are times when the odd things break, so it should be possible to carry one m16a2 and strip a second one for spare parts. I think for the sake of simplicity it would be better to have a round count and if you don't clean your rifle often enough the likely hood of a jam increases. Different rifles would have different rates. The AR15 is a pretty dirty running rifle and in my experience starts to get really dirty at about 1500 rounds. I use grease in mine for lubrication which does make the dirtiness appear worse. My m14 clone on the other hand is a very clean operating rifle and could go much further, probably 2500-3500 rounds before it was getting too dirty. The AKM I would set at about 1000-1500 rounds for cleaning, why you ask? Czech made surplus 7.62x39 is corrosive and even with a chrome lined barrel, in damp environments rust will form. My 1911 and P226 both are getting pretty dirty by 1000 rounds, but still function correctly. Most people don't realize however that the vast majority of firearms are extremely well built and the parts last a long time. Sadly I had to sell one of my favorite rifles, a Winchester lever action .45-70 manufactured in 1888. It was a well used rifle, the barrel was almost completely shot out of it, the rifling was nothing more than a shadow in the bore. I could still punch holes in the 1/4" plate steel gong at 100m, shot after shot with it and that's with a worn out rifle that is 130+ years old. Lever actions are internally far more complex than your average auto-loader.

I learned to shoot before I learned to walk. My first rifle was a Winchester pump action .22 made roughly 1930. The lawful ownership of firearms is critical to a free society. How a government treats gun owners is a pretty good indicator of how the "ruling" class feels about the general population. The more lax the gun laws, the more respect government has for its citizens. The tighter the gun laws, the more the government seeks to control the citizens life.
-
You must not live in a country that allows the ownership of firearms among the civilian population. The only major difference between an AR15 and a M16 is the auto sear and the bolt carrier. The only difference between a commercially available semi-automatic MG42 and a real MG42 is the semi-auto only is designed to be unable to contain the full auto fire control group. The only difference between the MP43-MP44-STG44 and the BD44, is the BD44 cannot contain the original full auto trigger group. In some cases military and police have less hands on experience with firearms than enthusiasts. Any firearms enthusiast is not going to need much time to learn and understand a new to them weapon when they understand the fundamentals of firearms operation. You seem to be living in a bit of a fairly tale land dream world where the military is going to be unstoppable, this is not the case. Nazi Germany had the best military in the world, but due to leadership failures they lost the war. The United States has the best military in the world right now, and all it would take is some poor leadership to run it into the ground and be nothing more than a footnote in history. Also, it is worth noting that most military firearms are designed to be easy to use and maintain because they have to be designed for the dumbest, inbred no-minds that might making it through the selection process. The AK47 proved how important it is to be easy to maintain and use. It may not be the most accurate, the prettiest, or the best put together but anyone can be trained to use it in under 5 minutes and it will always go bang. That said, the AR series of rifles don't take much more effort to train people to use, but you can see that the AR15(M16) was not as fully thought out as a combat weapon when compared against the STG44 and the AK47.

Can the AS50 thermal spawn in a barrack?
NavyCuda replied to mitor's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The AS50 TWS does not spawn in DayZ. Also, if it did spawn it would come with the NATO ammunition, not M107 ammo. Someone left that behind at barracks for one reason or another. -
The DMRs performance greatly drops beyond 500m. Bullet drop and travel time turn into a huge factor. At about 700-800m fully zoomed your target is out of the mildots and into the post. Any shot over 500m is turning into a real crap shoot with the DMR. I've got a fair bit of experience with it but I've been learning the hard way that at 500m DMR vs .50, the high rate of fire does make up for the less effective rounds but correctly judging your drop is critical. In my case I did not correctly judge my drop and my prone target who had ranged me, dialed in his AS50 and as soon as I had to reload he came out of cover and finished me off. Though in fairness, had I been a little smarter and used my cover more effectively, perhaps relocated once more I might have taken him.

Why do most clans require 18+ players
NavyCuda replied to BwobBwub's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I said adults, no one in my group is younger than 25. I can still play games on the internet because I am able to pick and choose who I wish to play with. I don't have to tolerate children, because there are other groups that will. I am the one who organizes my group, so I get to decide who rolls with us or not. Children do not roll out with us. Period. However, generally speaking most people have some life experience by the time they are 18, they also don't have squeaky voices and know to shut up when told to do so. This isn't universally true, but in my experience it is the norm. So, really my next question is, what is the point you were trying to make with your reply? See the problem here is there is no gauge of maturity, however experience indicates that when someone has lived 18 consecutive years they have started to gain enough life experience to have something useful to add to the conversation. I live by the old adage, "Children should be seen and not heard". -
US 1799 - hosted by Shadows of Syn
NavyCuda replied to SquishyBear's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
I'm the aforementioned hubby. I was banned by log, because no one was online but I performed the service of removing a number of items from their tents. I think it took me five or six trips(server hops) to get all the weapons out of their tents that I wanted. Perhaps I was banned because I also saved the tents after removing weapons from them. Perhaps it was the destruction of their bus that really set them off. In any case, I too am banned. -
Why do most clans require 18+ players
NavyCuda replied to BwobBwub's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Well the biggest factor why my group is all adults, is who wants to listen to a whiny little child voice over teamspeak? Even the most mature teens get on my nerves very quickly. I don't like children and I especially don't like other peoples children. -
Is this what you call a bandit?
NavyCuda replied to Tonymaroni's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I would have shot you in the face as well, taken your bike and tea bagged your body. -
You forgot to mention how frayed everyone's nerves were. So much so that I died again to a friendly fire incident, even though at that point we were the only ones left on the server.

Massive armory in Barrack
NavyCuda replied to landwarrior tactical's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
In my experience the loot is tied to the player as long as they are on the server. I have found after doing multiple laps of the map that the same loot stays in place. If I log out of the server, and come back to an area I had previously visited the same loot will still be there. However, if another survivor approaches the area while I'm logged out it will reset the loot spawn and when I log in there is new to me loot. So the cleanup is semi-functioning, but seems dependent on the amount of traffic an area receives. These are just my interpretations of my observations but are by no means fact. -
What if the 50 cals were taken out of DayZ?

What if the 50 cals were taken out of DayZ?
NavyCuda replied to Dynami's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I find these threads comical because they are about people looking for gaming balance, when they somehow cannot recognize that the situation DayZ is simulating has no balance what so ever. If this was the real STHF, there will be no police, no rules and no limitations on weapons scavenged. I hope as the mod and standalone progress, all weapons become available with different spawn rates according to their real world rarity. -
1 week old public hive server no chopper (VILAYER)
NavyCuda replied to waffen-79's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
So the loss of the chopper might be a server issue? I mean I did blow it up, but on the next server restart it wasn't where I saved it and I didn't find it at any of the spawn points that I know of. -
1 week old public hive server no chopper (VILAYER)
NavyCuda replied to waffen-79's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
What is the deal with the long server resets anyways? I had a chopper for a little while on a vilayer server and crashed it. After the server restart I was unable to find it again, been to all the spawn points. I concede the possibility that someone has hidden it off map, and while I've explored out there a little bit, I did not find it. My group and I even took the PDX to the island off map to check for the chopper. My bigger complaint/concern is the long server restart times. Why does the server need to be 5 days old? All the crash loot is gone, we've destroyed a number of vehicles by accident and on purpose. I've personally destroyed the UAZ, a off-road pickup, a hatch back, two ATVs, two Buses and a hippy van. We also have destroyed a few peoples camps. With the long reset times, doesn't leave me much ability to fix and repair fresh spawned vehicles.
