I find it hard to believe that someone hasn't already suggested this, so I think it's probably already out there. I can't find it so I'll post this anyway. Animals should be a real challenge to hunt, almost a sub-game in itself. Domesticated animals you can just walk up to and axe should be very rare, as these will be quickly killed and consumed after a societal breakdown. Wild animals should hear, smell and see you from quite far away, and run faster than you can. I've hunted pigs with dogs and knives before, much the same as in this video: Pigs are quite smart, and I've found when you're driving past they will sometimes stand still in the bushes so you can't see them, rather than running and making themselves visible. Their tusks can gore you and your dogs if you aren't careful. In fact, it's advisable to put armour on your dogs to prevent this. At night, some animals will stand there for a second and stare back at you when you shine a spotlight at them. Perhaps some vehicles could be fitted with a spotlight for hunting? Maybe spotlights could be available to carry around? This could be a really deep part of the game - simulating the behaviour of animals. In the very least they could behave exactly the same as zombies, except they run in the opposite direction rather than towards you. Maybe territorial male deer would attack though?

Glad to see the positive reaction. Seemed really obvious to me, I find it strange that the animals are so slow and stupid. Obviously it hasn't been possible to work on them much so far. Animals should also come to water for a drink. Then you could camp next to a pond and wait for them to come by. Herd behaviour would be nice. Imagine frightening a herd of goats in one direction while your partner lays in wait for an ambush. Fashioning spears might be useful. Skip to 4:00 in this video. Most people will find it pretty gruesome, but very appropriate for the game. I Can't Keep Playing Like This
RooBurger replied to -Guardian-'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
95% of the time, if I can sneak up and someone and tell them to drop their weapons they'll disconnect, and if I comply for someone else they just kill me immediately. Hopefully you're right that it's evolving and people are willing to experiment in the future. -
Perfectly reasonable option for little girls who need to leave the night light on.

You might want to watch this for inspiration, Frankie helping bambies: -
Let's not get silly with it though, I much prefer the hard sci-fi angle. If there is some way that a virus could create antifreeze then that might be interesting. It might have evolved that to protect itself and infect more people.

I'd like to be able sneak up behind someone and do this: I actually have a brown belt in BJJ so could do this in reality. Once you have it locked in, takes anywhere from about 3 to 30 seconds (or longer depending how deep you have the choke and how well they can resist) to put someone to sleep. The longer you hold on, the longer they are out. Hold on long enough and they're dead. But I understand that it might not be appropriate since it's not realistic to assume that everyone might have this skillset. On the other hand, I don't know how to use an AS50 in reality but can do so in the game, so...

It's more important that you see your enemy before they see you. That's why the hacks are more commonly ESP rather than aimbots.

I was playing with my girlfriend yesterday. We were trying to meet up, but she ran into someone in a ghillie suit. She asked him not to kill her, and he decided to help her. White night syndrome in full effect. She was talking to me over Skype while all this was happening. Then she noticed that zombies would run at him and drop dead a few feet away. Of course, must be a hacker. We were debating whether or not I should try to kill him as I was pretty close at this stage. My opinion is that hackers can go to hell, whether helping or not. But he spotted me from quite far away. I suppose he has some kind of hack which allows all name plates to be seen. My GF explained that I was friendly and we were intending to meet up. So they both came over to me on a quad bike, and he gave us some guns and a ghillie suit for me (GF has a female character so that's useless for her). He asked if there was anything else I wanted, and I asked if he has NVGs. He said "well it's your lucky day, I happen to have two on me.". At no point did he admit to hacking. He noticed that someone was running past in the distance, and decided to run off and kill him. He threw a grenade and the survivor was down. Shortly after, he ran back to us and asked if I'd like to loot the body. I said sure and followed him back. The body had a lot of the best gear on it. I can only assume that he planted it there for me. He began to ask if he could add us on Skype. For a moment I considered adding him so he'd be happy for the moment, then block him once we left the server. While he was talking he ran over the side of a hill and came back in a military truck. My GF and I decided to just leave the server. We logged out. At the time, more than anything I felt sorry for him, and my wish not to let him down outweighed my wish to betray him. It was all quite pathetic. Looking back, I wish I'd told the sad bastard to get fucked. It's a very hollow feeling to get items I didn't earn. The reason I play DayZ is because finding items is more rewarding than in any other game I've played, and killing bandits is possibly the best feeling I've ever had playing a game. Getting the best stuff for free completely breaks it for me. Due to the sheer amount of hackers in the game these days, I'm considering holding out until the stand alone comes. The main thing I learned is that some (perhaps most?) hackers are sad, lonely people who just want others to accept and praise them.

Met a hacker... and I pity him
RooBurger replied to RooBurger's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
In this thread I said I'd kill every hacker I met whether they were nice or not, but it happened again: met a friendly hacker, but didn't kill the bastard because I felt sorry for him! I started asking where he got his AS50 with thermal sights. He made up a lie and I said that you shouldn't be able to get that gun in DayZ. He didn't know that. Then he admitted he was using hacks. He was an inexperienced player. Never heard of an L85, didn't even know which building was the hospital. He said getting killed for no reason by other players upset him so much that he "caved" and decided to PAY for hacks. $15 a month. He can now see every other player's name plate and how far away they are. I chatted with him for a few more minutes, making sure I gained his trust. I moved around a lot as if I was looking everywhere so he got used to my movement and felt comfortable. He was laying prone and watching Cherno. My plan was to walk behind him, say "all hackers are ruining this game" and kill him with my winchester. I'd already asked if he was using god mode to be sure it would work. Just as I was about to stand up, he said "but at the end of the month I probably won't renew. I'll just go back to playing the game normally... using the hacks has taught me a lot so I think I'll be more confident". I sighed. Couldn't do it to the poor bugger. After a pause I just said "cool, well, I just want to say it's really rewarding to play this game without hacks. Surviving and not getting killed is awesome, and getting killed by other players is part of the game, it makes it all worth it. See you later." It's just another example. Someone who was so upset by getting killed in DayZ that he didn't just leave the game - he paid money to get hacks, came back to get his revenge. In my opinion it's not just the fact that it's so easy to run scripts in ARMA 2. The mod is so psychologically challenging (moreso than any other game I've ever played) that it drives a lot of people to cheat. This hacker claimed it ruined the game for him. For me, it's the entire reason I play it. -
Dumb angry kids voice their opinion on the internet more than anyone else, I don't think DayZ will fail. Still frustrates me that so many posts are about how Rocket hasn't spoken for two whole days, or that the game hasn't gone from a free mod made by a couple of guys to bleeding edge standalone in a matter of 5 months. If only there was a way to make money from the tears of indignant children, Rocket would be a wealthy man.

It's simply proof that gameplay matters far, far, far more than graphics.

DayZ Development Blog #2: The integration begins
RooBurger replied to danielreid's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
Really? That's a deal breaker for you? Stability, security, efficiency, earlier release are less important than whether or not it supports more than 4 cores? The fact it's an awesome game doesn't matter? OK, goodbye. -
You must be new to the internet :P
-
The way people are talking here you'd think this was Duke Nukem Forever.
-
Since we're making silly demands: Rocket must send my mum a birthday card OR I WILL NEVER PLAY DAYZ AGAIN!

I think there's a big difference between someone who kills for loot, and someone who kills fresh spawns on the beach. Perhaps a different skin should be assigned to people who make a couple of kills on players who have no weapons. A "murderer" or "serial killer" skin. Maybe it should look a little weird or crazy. Or a clown costume to make them look ridiculous.

Distinction between bandit and murderer?

Hehe, remember, that's part of the game too. Begging not to be killed is a legitimate way to avoid death if you can get it to work. -

I'm not begging you to stop. Killing people like you is one of the best feelings I've ever had in a video game. I don't want you to go away. -

Well, that's what I started the thread about. -
Distinction between bandit and murderer?
RooBurger replied to RooBurger's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
BTW, I wouldn't mind at all if they removed skins which are based on player behaviour. I'd actually rather keep DayZ less "gamey" and not punish or reward any behaviour other than survival. But if bandit skins are going to stay, this thread is my suggestion. -
Distinction between bandit and murderer?

I really couldn't give a shit what people call them, I just noticed some other people calling newly spawned players that. I like "Bambi" because it's humourous though. I definitely don't assume they're harmless, it's just less challenging to kill them. -

I'm not saying we should ban the Bambi killers or something, and I don't care what word you use to describe them. Murderer, thrill killer, bandit, whatever. I'm just saying, if we're already making bandits identifiable with a different skin, why not introduce another skin identifying people who make it their job to kill defenseless targets. I accept them as part of the game. I think the problem you really have with my suggestion is that you're concerned about ending up with a skin identifying you as a Bambi killer. I agree that there are times when you have to kill them. Once I allowed someone to pick up a gun, and of course they immediately killed me after I helped them out. Because of that, anyone who goes for a gun in my presence gets shot. But that doesn't happen very often at all. If the Bambi killer skin requires at least 2 Bambi kills, I'd almost never get one. -
Distinction between bandit and murderer?
RooBurger replied to RooBurger's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Let's break this down. To find out, we must define a difference between one and the other. Turns out that's pretty easy, because one is: And the other is: There's the difference. Not only that, but in the original post I said: i.e., players who have no weapons and so are completely defenseless. If we're going to have skins depending on behaviour, I think it might be nice to have an extra one for bambi killers, the lowest of the low.
