Third person vs First person view

In that case, any game mechanic whatsoever could be be seen the same way. I think you're being a little dramatic :) It's because people prefer to see around corners without sticking their head out. Simple as that.

Third person vs First person view

I'm giving you very specific reasons why I'd like to see it removed. I'm not saying my opinion is worth more than yours, I'm just arguing my position. I just disagree with you, no need to be offended by it. I don't see how a compromise can be made. That's already the case. I can't find ANY first person servers now.

Third person vs First person view

Master Sergeant (then Staff Sergeant) Roy P. Benavidez United States Army, who distinguished himself by a series of daring and extremely valorous actions on 2 May 1968 while assigned to Detachment B56, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), 1st Special Forces, Republic of Vietnam. On the morning of 2 May 1968, a 12-man Special Forces Reconnaissance Team was inserted by helicopters in a dense jungle area west of Loc Ninh, Vietnam to gather intelligence information about confirmed large-scale enemy activity. This area was controlled and routinely patrolled by the North Vietnamese Army. After a short period of time on the ground, the team met heavy enemy resistance, and requested emergency extraction. Three helicopters attempted extraction, but were unable to land due to intense enemy small arms and anti-aircraft fire. Sergeant Benavidez was at the Forward Operating Base in Loc Ninh monitoring the operation by radio when these helicopters returned to off-load wounded crewmembers and to assess aircraft damage. Sergeant Benavidez voluntarily boarded a returning aircraft to assist in another extraction attempt. Realizing that all the team members were either dead or wounded and unable to move to the pickup zone, he directed the aircraft to a nearby clearing where he jumped from the hovering helicopter, and ran approximately 75 meters under withering small arms fire to the crippled team. Prior to reaching the team's position he was wounded in his right leg, face, and head. Despite these painful injuries, he took charge, repositioning the team members and directing their fire to facilitate the landing of an extraction aircraft, and the loading of wounded and dead team members. He then threw smoke canisters to direct the aircraft to the team's position. Despite his severe wounds and under intense enemy fire, he carried and dragged half of the wounded team members to the awaiting aircraft. He then provided protective fire by running alongside the aircraft as it moved to pick up the remaining team members. As the enemy's fire intensified, he hurried to recover the body and classified documents on the dead team leader. When he reached the leader's body, Sergeant Benavidez was severely wounded by small arms fire in the abdomen and grenade fragments in his back. At nearly the same moment, the aircraft pilot was mortally wounded, and his helicopter crashed. Although in extremely critical condition due to his multiple wounds, Sergeant Benavidez secured the classified documents and made his way back to the wreckage, where he aided the wounded out of the overturned aircraft, and gathered the stunned survivors into a defensive perimeter. Under increasing enemy automatic weapons and grenade fire, he moved around the perimeter distributing water and ammunition to his weary men, reinstilling in them a will to live and fight. Facing a buildup of enemy opposition with a beleaguered team, Sergeant Benavidez mustered his strength, began calling in tactical air strikes and directed the fire from supporting gunships to suppress the enemy's fire and so permit another extraction attempt. He was wounded again in his thigh by small arms fire while administering first aid to a wounded team member just before another extraction helicopter was able to land. His indomitable spirit kept him going as he began to ferry his comrades to the craft. On his second trip with the wounded, he was clubbed from behind by an enemy soldier. In the ensuing hand-to-hand combat, he sustained additional wounds to his head and arms before killing his adversary.[3][note 1] He then continued under devastating fire to carry the wounded to the helicopter. Upon reaching the aircraft, he spotted and killed two enemy soldiers who were rushing the craft from an angle that prevented the aircraft door gunner from firing upon them. With little strength remaining, he made one last trip to the perimeter to ensure that all classified material had been collected or destroyed, and to bring in the remaining wounded. Only then, in extremely serious condition from numerous wounds and loss of blood, did he allow himself to be pulled into the extraction aircraft. Sergeant Benavidez' gallant choice to join voluntarily his comrades who were in critical straits, to expose himself constantly to withering enemy fire, and his refusal to be stopped despite numerous severe wounds, saved the lives of at least eight men. His fearless personal leadership, tenacious devotion to duty, and extremely valorous actions in the face of overwhelming odds were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflect the utmost credit on him and the United States Army. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Benavidez

Third person vs First person view

When they can magically watch you without repercussion, sure. I'm not getting outplayed, I do quite well. I'm forced to use 3rd person simply because I'm putting myself at a disadvantage if I don't. When it's switched on, you have to use it unless you want to be gimped. What kind of argument is that? You can't just say "blah blah blah" and that means realism doesn't matter. It definitely does in this game. It's the most realistic game I've ever played. Not just because of how it works, but how it makes me feel. For me, 3rd person takes the icing off the cake. It doesn't ruin the game for me, but I'd really prefer it wasn't there. That's not realistic I'm afraid. You want real life examples to explain why? I think you're just worried about losing it because you'll be at a disadvantage until you get used to 1st person.

I have a challenge for you - next time you take cover from someone, switch to first person only. Let me know if it makes a difference.

Not only that, it weakens the effect of suppressive fire. It's more difficult to pin someone down when they can watch you without peeking their head out. So when you're the aggressor and trying to lay down suppressive fire, they can just watch and wait, then pop up and shoot you or whatever. You're far more likely to get pinned if you can't watch.

Not that simple - it puts people who don't use it at a massive disadvantage. I don't like it, but I'm forced to use it if I don't want to be gimped.

Third person vs First person view

I use third person all the time because I'm only putting myself at a massive disadvantage if I don't. Even though I don't like the feature, I'm forced to use it. Because of that, even though I'd like to see it removed, it would take a little while for me to adjust also.

Third person vs First person view

It doesn't take that long to get used to playing in first person. I'd be happy if there were more servers out there with first only, but they're extremely rare. In fact, I can't find any FP servers with a ping less than 200 at all.

Third person vs First person view

It's not because first person feels more immersive, it's because third person changes combat mechanics considerably. In reality you can't float above your head to see further, or look over walls and around corners. For those who want to see all their gear, it would be easy enough to add a feature for this. If Minecraft can do it, so can DayZ.

L85 Should it stay or go

I care more about realism than "balance". At least, as realistic as possible within the context of a game. If I can be shown evidence that a gun with a thermal scope is likely to be lying around in an Eastern Bloc country, I'll be happy to keep it.

Personally I'm less concerned about balance than realism. I just wouldn't expect to see thermal scopes laying around a rural/industrial area in an eastern bloc country after a zombie apocalypse.

I've killed 5 or so with the one L85 I've found, and still have. But usually I'm spotting for my friend who has an AS50. Thanks to the L85 it's easy to spot targets as far as the viewing distance will allow. If they're within 800m (about half the time it's further) I'll switch to the DMR so we can both fire at the same time and send more lead at them. We zero to different ranges in case our calculation wasn't accurate. We fire and move to a different position, whether we got the kill or not. No chance for retaliation, and minimal chance that someone will follow the sound and find us. So if our server displayed what weapon causes the kill (it doesn't), you'd still never know that you were spotted with an L85.

If the L85 didn't have thermal vision I'd be quite happy to keep it. I found a legit L85 on a chopper in a Lingor server, and that character has been alive for a month. Once I got used to it, I've found it to be a massive advantage. Especially with my friend who has an AS50 on the same server - an AS50 sniper and L85 spotter team is amazing. Don't tell me it isn't a massive advantage, that's bullshit. Either you're lying or you don't know how to use it. I'd like to see it removed simply on the grounds that it doesn't exist in reality... or does it? Regardless, AS50s and thermal vision should be so rare in reality that you'd never come across them anyway. Unless the map is set around a US or UK military base/camp

I say they should keep the L85, add more weapons with thermal vision, and add streetlights, light sabers and unicorns.

From Reddit: "I did a massive amount of research into power generation during natural disasters. There is a great thread on straight dope about the subject, actually. It would appear, that under most circumstances unless authorities made a very concerted effort and had plenty of time to prepare, prior to abandoning a power station, that it would trip within hours (maximum days) of being unmanned. The problem is the inter-connectivity of the power grid. Unless an area is deliberately disconnected to become an island in the power supply, even if you try and restart the power station it is going to trip. This issue was covered in Stephen King's "The Stand" quite well. Starting up a power station from having tripped is an extremely complex task, and very daunting, even for professionals. It would take only a few problems in a country before, left unmanned, the power stations would turn themselves off and when one starts doing it, the cascading effect happens very fast. This has already been seen from recent disasters. Luckily, most natural disasters are reasonably localized so personnel are available and online to assist with prevent a serious power issue from becoming catastrophic across a nation. Generation isn't the major key, it is the complexity of the system. Powering a few lamps is one thing, powering a town or a city is another. Certainly, we do need some more work on lights to bring up the atmosphere, but I'm a total geek when it comes to the reality behind the situation. It is also terrifying to me, and important, to demonstrate to people just how fragile our system is when you take personnel out of a system. If the workers go home from the power-station, most will trip within hours." http://www.reddit.com/r/dayz/comments/138gu2/streetlights_turned_on_in_dayz_whats_your_opinion/

It seems you have nothing to say. Just take this post for example. All you have given us so far is an insinuation that you expect developers to entertain you constantly whilst simultaneously developing their game.
  20. The backlash from combat loggers is hilarious. Look, it just means you need to be more careful. Your actions have consequences. You have to learn what is risky and what isn't. Your heart SHOULD be racing when you enter a town after building a character for a couple of days. When you combat log you're avoiding the consequences of your actions.

  22. Venthos, your shit made it into the most popular mod, and the breakthrough success of the year. That's amazing, I hope you're fucking proud of yourself. As for the people using your code without permission, remember that imitation is the highest form of flattery.
