Persistent Container AKA Tents? coming next update
siddhi replied to punkvegita's topic in General Discussion
not to be thick, but reading what I see here it is officialy the case that tents have not been implemented yet? Great, I have been running around for nothing. As a single player I absoutley need to do loot farming to have something to survive me. -
Running on rough terrain, sprained or broken ankles, boots and making adequate light useful/essential...
siddhi replied to Roshi (DayZ)'s topic in Suggestions
I am resurrecting this thread because of the awesomeness...of shoes! I recently snuck up on pair of dudes hiding in upper floors of the hospital. They had been stupid enough to snipe at me and I was extracting revenge. I could hear the one guy munching on food as I kept up the stairs, wincing as my jungle boots made way to much noise. Indeed, in a shot the guy was on to me, hacket flailing.... the rest does turn out well for hacket guy or his mate, but the point being.... i should have been able to "silent sneak", given the right foot wear. So how about this modification (indicated before somewhere I am sure but more the merrier ...) 1. Shoes are amended with following parameters: a. noise (say 1-4) determines the amount of noise you make plodding or especially sneaking b. stability (say 1-4) determines the likelihood of suffering a fall when running or sprinting on uneven terrain (with the possibility or injury or break) c. speed (say 1-3) determines how fast you can possibly sprint, meaning you can outrun each other d. durability ( I think already exists) All of the above would have as massive effect on gameplay, especially when moderated by the status of item criteria. Imagine how cool pristine reeboks would be for sneaking and sprinting! Imagine how useless the same shoes would be running in terrain! Imagine all the endless criminal behavior as a result of this :) f this :) I would kill for a pair of hot pristine running shoes, that’s for sure .... -
I connected to DE 2450, a server that I had used before without issue, and died before getting to the game proper. The first time I tried to join around 2018 CET I got to the loading screen, and then "Kicked by server". I immidelty reconnected, got to the loading screen, and then got a "you are dead" message BEFORE the icons even appeared, let alone the landscape proper. Btw i was in the middle of nowhere, so very little chance that someone had seen me and poped while i spawning in, even if that could happen before the icons appeared. I respawned in wildnerness. Immidetly exited, when to a different server, and loaded in - on the coast. Still in my Ghillie suite, but without anything else, even a backpack or flashlight I lost a 2-week charachter with the absoutle gucci gear, L7 gun, AS50, SD-mags, coyotte pack, you name it. I am pissed beyond messure. Back in March I had my charchter restored by a helpful soul. If there is any, any chance this could happen I would be very grateful indeed. S

I don't seem to get the "stat box" on the upper right anymore - no kills, humanity, blood values etc, it is just gone. I hadn't played my (alive) charachter since July, and when I logged back in everything was different. Starting with new charachters has not helped either I launch via DazCommander and its says everything is up to date. thanks S

I can't prove that script kiddie "markelsim" was responsible for a mass game kill on DE 3603 at around 1830 CET 13.10. (which included yours truly and all his gucci gear), but he was definetly spawning vehicles like crazy - witnessed it first hand - and was also invulnerable. I gave up playing this game because of stupid script kiddies making it totally pointless - to get killed like that is absoutely uncool. I came back after 6 weeks, confident that a solution had been found, build up my gear, and get wiped out again in a serverkill. if there is anyway i can get my gear back that would be great. S

...i have a simple question (which I expect, given the sample population here , to elicit a flood of bullshit responses): who are you in RL? do you have an interesting job? any job? social interactions? a pet? i have a semi-professional interest that was triggered when i got snipped recently. now this was not a normal, high-target urban area type sniping: this was at a crashsite, at night, with only about 20 ppl on a server. all Zs had despawned, so the guy was likely lying there for a long, long time. this is really intriguing: granted, urban sniping may have a certain appeal, but dedicated BUSH sniping? that must be like watching paint dry. what kind of person does that? as one of the older players i actually had a type of sniper training once-upon-a-draftee-army. while i can see the attraction in doing a repeat observation of a location for 60min (latest then you switch with your team mate), even doing that for a quarter of that time on a computer game strikes me as .. unusual.. so, dedicated bush snipers: how long do you usually observe a location for before you call it in? more importantly, WHAT do you do while you are waiting? work on a different computer? eat? pluck your chicken ;)? and how you would you categorize the personal life of the average bush sniper? sample responses would indicate young male between 18-22, usually with a low-impact university (i.e. not high workload) or just generally unemployed, socially rather isolated, and often enough eastern European. of course, maybe you are a mid-thirties progamer in a group office with DayZ just running in the background, but i think that would be the exception... why I am interested? a couple of years ago one of the most interesting little titbits from the book Microtrends was the career aspirations of a certain generation of Americans: "urban sniper" (see for instance http://francessarich.blogspot.co.at/2008/07/microtrends-iii.html ). Initially analysis suggested that, as the respondents were mostly black and Latino, there was "logical army career path" that, ill-informed that they maybe were, these young men were aiming for. On the other hand, secondary analysis indicated that in fact the "isolated, minority ethnic group" factor was stronger....the lack of possible empathy was interesting as well. In essence, there was a clear mass sociopathic trend to be observed in "isolated, disconnected young men", and i am wondering if they all ended up here... i expect the average troll-spittle will have given up after the first paragraph of this post so i might actually get the one or the other interesting insight..please by all means talk generally if you prefer, but let me know what your thoughts are: displaced sociopathic behavior, boredoom, long-tail adrenaline-junkie, or maybe just to busy multitasking to be an active player?

@biscuits: will you focus on the (one) screen the entire time, or are you multitasking? if the former, are you "zoning out" in Chernarus ("taking in the atmosphere" if you will), or are you more focused around your immediate physical environment? if you are "mentally dwelling" in Chernarus, would you say have a very large screen / advanced sound set up? how long will you lie in wait for, minutes or hours at a stretch?

thanks for all the answers and sorry it took me a while to get back. i thought the answers were very interesting, at least for me. DayZ is not the first game that has long solitary and unexciting gameplay moments - the all time winner would be Flight Simulator which has some quite extreme cases (real-time intercontinental flights etc.), but that game is very much about being a pilot..i.e. assuming an identity...rather then the interaction or even action component. DayZ is certainly more action orientated, so basically it poses interesting questions if there are people who will simply go into a OP for a long period and remain fixed on the screen throughout that time (call it lurking). I think that is very different from those who do bush sniping as part of teamplay (especially two-man OP teams) or who do it, in their words, as a "multitasking" part of their general routine. the comparison of these long-term lurkers with hunters is an interesting one. I have hunted, and I have an (albeit minimal) relevant training as a infantrymen, and for me there is no connection between the two physical and the virtual example. Having sat in a central European deer stand for a couple of hours I would say the experience is more similar to fishing - more about enjoying the entire environment - rather than the "kill". in military terms the theory I know is that you are supposed to switch between spotter and sniper. I was taught 60min within a classic OP context, I read somewhere the Americans did 15min turns. In any case, I doubt if the dedicated lurkers are getting the enviornmental feel of hunting, or the alert high of focused military sniping. Maybe it is something else entirely - like "staying alive"?

yes I am sure that this has been asked before, maybe even with the newest update, but I just want to ask it again... how long does your body take before it despawns? i have twice run from the coast back to my corpse outside of stary sobor only to find that apparently i had already turned into worm food. In some cases where I have had to kill someone, I found that the body actually disappeared really quickly...maybe 2min after the kill...maybe in the middle of the looting as well. What is the general experience for both cases here?
-
thanks for the responses: @rabbican: what hierarchy-level would you say you are at in your organization? would you say you are more team-member, team-leader, independent worker, or other? do i understand correctly that you will remain at your location for a longer-period (couple of days), just log in for the kill? @sethan: what do you do when you are waiting in the bush? how long a wait will you put up with in RL between kills? are you employed? @ravin: spot on. thanks.

i think classes are something should be serious considered, it would definitely add a new element to the game. in particular, it would certainly encourage teamplay, and it would also help your individual "story" to develop. both versions, (i.e spawn as or teach yourself) would be interesting, with or without custom skins (not sure the skins are a win - what about lying about your skill :) It is even possible to go one step further with the "skills" system, to the point where each class can "craft" something or another. A master hunter that can make build a lean-to, deploy a traps, or build a crossbow? An engineer that can "harvest" scrap metal from wrecks and build barricades? A medic that can make methamphetamine? :) (ok, the last one is probably a bad idea..) having never played WoW or other games I can't comment as to what the gameplay there is like, but character classes (and skills) would certainly make the cooperative game play element stronger +1 to the OP EDIT: oh, as one of older players, let me point out that some of us just aren't that good at shooting-with-mouse anymore (especially when it involves balancing laptop, watching other computer screens, listening to news and screaming kids). Us old farts NEED a skill system...otherwise we just get selected out.... . -
After realizing that I don'T actually have the time to play DayZ properly, I had the following idea... ..why not make a separate map (say, Utes) to a dedicated quick-launch PvP experience? Players could spawn with shotguns and get right into their PvP bloodlust. I would suggest having 2-3 massive spawn points for heavy gear that effectively would work as "capture the flag" points, attracting players and making them want to "hold" it against superior numbers. The "quick launch" (but persistent) idea has a couple of advantages. 1.) Provides a "quick fix" for those looking for some quick Z-killing or PvP action, not hours of roleplaying 2.) Moves to purse PvP players off the general map into a contained area. 3.) provides for a "sandbox" to test certain bits of gear 4.) provides a sustainable model for if and when DayZ becomes a regular game, but still wants to offer a "free" option... what do you think?
-
- i think for a PvP player shooting people is its own reward...and the average amount of gear in the "light" version would actually be higher then in the "full" version. The very small size of Ute would mean confrontation would be frequent. it would be nice also to get the PvP freaks onto their own server config. - i would NOT use the same character profile for the light version, especially as the "light" version should be get all heavily tooled up pretty quickly. This is supposed to be a quick-and-dirty 1h entertainment option, for those who can'T invest hours on hand wandering around Chernarus looking for matches. And did I mention it gets rid of the PvP freaks...

plus one. ps: present-day class III body Armour actually will protect against AK-fire.

I was very happy to read this... Hall also offered a few details on how he plans to flesh out the gameplay beyond its rather primitive foundations. "I think the group dynamic is really important - that's going to give more incentive for people not to just kill everyone else on sight. That's a very important thing to tease out, and that also gives some longevity to playing," he explains. "Right now, once you've survived those first few days it can get a little bit boring. Maybe you could have more choices - you could be a lone wolf and go off and build a cabin somewhere, or maybe there's a large group of you and you want to take over a city and you end up fighting with other groups over resources. You know, elements that provide more of a meta game. Expanding that is really important. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-06-08-the-future-of-day-z Very glad that we might move away from the this absolutely random P2P environment. I was sniped 3 times in one night recently, while it is fine to have bandits I think we need to put the breaks on the random killing sprees that just muck the thing up a bit and which frankly have no connection with real-life morality (unless the bandits are themselves demented....nice) I would prefer more Zombies (often only 500 or less on server - way too little) to encourage cooperation, otherwise it is less attractive to work together anyway. Also, I LOVE the idea of a persistent operational-strategy environment on top of the tactical, where individuals can join into teams or clans, and potentially take over towns or manufacturing etc. The question would have to be however: how would a persistent game world like that look like, without overpowering it for new players? Suggestions?

Chernarus is becoming stale. New map?
siddhi replied to imagelesskjc's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I personally HATE Takistan map...can't imagine anything more boring! Guys don't underestimate the level of detail that went into "copying" a bit of the Czech republic for the CHernarus map. That is why it works ....it is real life... having said that....we do have an entire Greek island to look forward to on ArmaIII...and because it is an island a believable goal: GET OFF THE ISLAND :) -
plus 1 on different-sized weapons (I am waiting for the saw-off shot-gun:)) plus 1 STAR on getting tired and slowing down due to overweight As I have said many times before: the ENTIRE inventory systems needs a heavy duty remake, it really does not work at all.

For the Love of All That Is Crossbows: QUIVERS

agree + 1 -
i think the fact that people clearly differentiate between "survivor" and "bandit" already proves the point that we need to have a "bandit" identifier, based on whatever circumstances. to get back to the point of the OP... clearing and "holding" area...how would that exactly work? how would a new player be able to interact in an enviornment dominated by clans, or similar? limit the size of the land that can be held? make it all local server bound?

Contrary to popular belief moderators cannot do anything server/game related. They are just that - moderators (on the forum) actually, i had my profile restored by one of the DayZ staff. well partially anyway. unfortunately all my private messages disappeared with the server hack, and the original post that led me to id the relevant staff member disappeared as well. so still waiting for that PM...

can A MODERATOR please PM me so we can look at restoring my profile? otherwise I cannot play the game at all - I keep on going swimming - and if possible it would be nice to have my own profile back! so please looking forward to a PM so I can pass on my ID number...
