Hand-slot and some stuff to go with it.

Added more depth on Hand-Slot idea, also changed topic title. -
1 suggestion/request for the stand alone.

Not just because I get frustrated at the stop to do anything mechanic, but I really think you should be able to switch weapons and throw things while moving, maybe not full on sprint or full run but really if i had a heard of zombies after me, i would just pull the pin on a grenade and drop it. and keep going. i know the engine demos for Arma3 show low velocity animations for grenade throwing and such, hopefully this is one of the things they add to engine when they rework it. Also for switching weapons, just make it take longer while moving, I'm pretty sure I could put a pistol in a holster while running it would just take a bit to get the barrel right in the slot, and then grab the strap holding the rifle or shotgun on my shoulder and work it to my hands. Yeah I'm not gonna be able to do that in 3 seconds flat, maybe 10 or 15? Personally I've never done that specific action but I'm sure some things come close. Ever been at a jog while on the phone, putting that in your pocket then swinging your backpack around to grab whatever out of it?? almost the same thing no? my 2 cents anyway. -
Alright, after watching (youtube) pick items up in the remake of Half-life I had a brainstorm! We need a quick-slot or an in hand slot, while picking up every item in the world would be cool that's not gonna be all that practical for a server. However this could allow us to add things like say, a Duffle Bag. Imagine finding a duffle bag, it could have 30 slots(per current inv system) however you can't wear it like a normal backpack and you can only carry it in hand(doesn't fit into backpacks, but will fit into a vehicle) So with the current system you would see it on the ground, mouse wheel over it and select gear or open duffle bag, put whatever you want to put in there maybe an extra gun or 30 cans of soda, ya know whatever. Now you close the inventory and wheel over it and select carry. this will HOLSTER your current weapon and show you carrying a bag on the screen. But how do i shoot stuff, well that's why its a quick slot or in hand slot. if you need to defend yourself you select your weapon and the bag drops to the ground. then you can run around and shoot stuff. This will present you with a unique dilemma, can you take out the threat and grab your bag? do you just run? or do you need to lose the bag and get out? Its another good way to give us tougher choices in game and while looting. But why do we need this temporary storage? Well once it gets to the point where we can setup good camps for many people or you have your own(even now with tents) you may want to run into a town to get supplies or more weapons, well right now you pretty much have to either clear you backpack, or everything and run back in and start gathering, this limits your options of how much you can bring back or how well you can defend yourself when going in. That's a Nice Ural you have there, worried someone might hijack it in town? grab some duffle bags and park it out of town a bit. The Duffle Bag is really the only solid idea i had for the quick slot other than being able to throw garbage at zombies or something, and with the current gear system it would be very clunky to do now but this is really great for standalone. Im sure having a quick slot would have other advantages, i would hesitate letting weapons be carried in it although may people would argue if your holstering your weapons then why not be able to carry another one in that slot and just dump it when your out of ammo or it could be a good spot for an axe/melee??? Thoughts, Ideas, Feedback?? Edited: Added more stuff to elaborate on the Hand Slot. Alright so I have a bit more of an Idea how this could work. In the standalone we are going to see many more tools, so hopefully to keep the game more authentic to real life, you wont be able to carry ALL the tools, but you will still need to use tools and while just having the tool to enable a function seems easy, its lazy. We should have to equip the tool and while that tool is out Left or Right click to perform functions. With that said, here's the better importance of a Hand slot(hand slot more accurate than quick slot). To keep us from having to unequip one of our weapons to equip the tool. You would simply put the tool in your hand slot and now this is the item you will be holding and same function applies, if you need to swap to a weapon quickly you will drop the current in Hand item and pull your weapon out. However if you open your inventory and put the tool back into the storage place of choice then you wont lose it and your last selected weapon will become active or in my eyes you need to unholster a weapon after exiting your inventory. Putting a system like this would really help cater to the many different functions we will need to perform. Also, concerning tools and their placement, I think aside from the Watch, Compass, Map, and GPS(if it stays) all other tools should take up room in the storage area of the inventory. Matches/Knife I'm on the edge about, both are small but I like the idea of taking the knife out to gut and also that matches don't come in bottomless boxes, 250 per box if its full :) . would also allow more variety, lighter anyone?

My thoughts on backstory; Everyone was in panic and fled to ships to get out to sea where no one would be infected but of course some infected dude got on and started terrorizing the place so we all jumped ship and washed up here :) tada.

Yes!! I would prefer that we not have "cunning" zombies as it feels too Left4Dead. While I agree there could be different zombies they shouldn't vary all that much, and their full run speed should be about 4/5s of the players normal run speed and they should move at a constant inside or out. To address spawning, if they are gonna be spawned, spawn A lot of them from farther away and in many more places inside and out, and don't respawn them until players have left the area and come back. Also!! Those wandering hoards trigger respawns but respect a 50meter radius of a player. The hoard acts just like a player in that it spawns them in from...400m away?? just throwing out numbers. What this means? well players could in theory clear an entire town out however, I would like to imagine that there's too many for a small group of players to do that. Possibly a band of 12 or more with a lot of ammo could, and then you could hold the town unless a hoard wanders up then more spawn within the town and then you have to clear it all over again or get out. I'm sure this would load the servers a lot but its still a great idea i think.

some ideas to make the game harder in PvE
habinero replied to SoWeMeetAgain's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I Agree with having more zombies, it would make running into towns more intense, also make them harder to kill, say only a head shot will kill them, and they should run at 4/5s our run speed. While that may seem like a nerf its countered by having to headshot and the fact that theres 20 more right beside the one you just killed, how much ammo do you have?? might be better to run. Aslo! Also! same speed INSIDE! yeah thats right can't loose em just my ducking in that shed and out the other side, maybe if you shut the door they would have to stop to open it. Also the stamina thing is a good idea, and leave NVGs in. you can get them at Military spawns, don't hate cause of the current state of the mod, think to the future my friend. I think its a good idea to not be able to carry all the tools, pick and choose its all part of survival. better inventory system would allow for some leeway with this. Like a watch.. its on your wrist it should just be noted if you have one or not. map could be in a pocket also just noted to have one or not, compass is small usually has a neck chain. so all the current tools really shouldn't be tools but just something you pickup so you have it, knife is debatable; stick it in your boot? Also what tools will be added?? we would all like to carry everything around with us but honestly,we can't. -
@Hydra Do you mean like your just looking through the eyes of the zombie of you? that may be something that's pretty cool to watch until you decide to hit the respawn button. However, going back to being infected, maybe its not cureable, maybe it is. depends on how the devs wan't to do it if they do it. but once your infected your not gonna be dead right away. thats what the timer is for(pic) you have X amount of time before that timer runs out, and let it be delayable with medication of some sort. but once it runs out you die, and a short time after your body becomes a zed that looks like you but with zombie face. This only happens if you die either from or with the infection.

I know the idea of being infected has been suggest, but here is kinda how I picture it and I have a picture too :D This is just an example, the "infected" time left does not relate to how much blood you have left. you could be at full blood with very little time left. Also, while agree and like minimalist UI formats, we need some visuals to play effectively, I do agree to remove the ammo count in the top corner, we can check our gear screen for that. but the other stuff looks pretty good. maybe better pictures. I'm no artist but something that gets us out of the CS level of UI Edited after Exenima post. There are lots of theories of what happens. Id rather you just be dead, and you start over like normal. As for your body, I think you should walk around as a zombie until server restart. The gear? In a real situation, it should all be there except for your equipped or used weapon, id imagine upon dying you would drop it and as a zombie, you wouldnt pick it up. A holstered weapon might still remain, would almost think a rifle slung over your shoulder would fall off too.

Is there a way to stop it? Only if you don't give anyone a gamma option. at least not one you can change at ease. [suggestion] At first start of the game/setup give us one of those boxes with a faint image to adjust gamma to, then the only way to change it would be to go into some file somewhere and restart the game. could people still change it? yes. but it would be more time consuming or people would make preset files and swap them out. I do play on Night servers a lot and I do turn my gamma and brightness all the way up almost always if I don't have NVGs. I will say some servers its pretty much daytime then others I can only see whats on the horizon. and yes heavy rain with high gamma sucks. Do I feel bad doing it? no not really, cant really play at night without doing it or having NVGs but the only time I've gotten those is coming across a decked out dead guy or in the most recent case, a bunch of hacked in standing dummies with PKMs(??some gun not in dayz) which we left on them. Though, I've been out in the woods at night, not near cities. you can see a bit better than what this game lets us.

Just noticed this with the latest beta build update of arma that SIX Launcher had me download today. Arma2 1.62.96895 dayz version remains 1.7.2.6. What I mean by just noticing, I logged in ran around in first person as it always logs me in that way, and noticed that while walking sound mainly comes out of my right headset speaker. However when I go into third person view, sound is equalized just fine. Anyone else with this issue? I also loaded up arma2 without dayz and played a quick edited mission, same thing. its build is Arma2 1.62.96584. Which im also confused as to why I have different builds depending on the way i load the game. I only noticed walking noise, i didnt fire any guns or get near anything to test. i figured the fact that my feet only make noise in my right ear is reason enough.

I think the idea is good, but let it be cureable, for gameplay sake. also my thought on it, is if your temp goes up it shows your infected, so the guage would turn red, also/mabye put a timer next to your blood, counting down, once it hits zero, dead or not you turn. this can be slowed by a more common drug/med, cured by a rare vaccine. Just my thought on it, give us more items to be looking for and need to keep.

I like this Idea, it may need some polish but yes in real life people learn different things and are good at some things over the other. IE i work in a factory; im good with wrenches, mechanical, and computers. My brother is a cook, trained in EMT and was in the Airforce. He knows diddly about wrenching, mechanical operation or computers, so there for my character could more easily fix a vehicle, maybe require less parts or time? Where as his character would make food give more blood and maybe bandage wounds faster? Like I said, it needs polish but there should be some kind of system in the game that lets us choose what we are good at. Even one of those slider bar things with set amount of points to be distributed I think would be good. In real life, other than we are all people we are not the same. Everyone has advantages and disadavtages. As far as punishing the "lone wolf" well yeah, IRL if you have no friends your kinda limited. we all arent Highly trained James Bond type people. all those died in the first attempt to kill the zombies :) This type of system has been posted before, I know ive seen it somewhere, but yes i think implementing a skill system is a good way to add some depth to this game.

Not really a gameplay feature.. well maybe, but for the standalone, make the players profile be like their License. Despite all the chaos im sure most people would have their wallet on them. so maybe if you kill someone you can take their wallet and/or their license would be like a trophy? Just a thought.

My group found 3 vehicles last night, fixed them up and put them out in the woods with stuff in them. I logged onto the server about 2 hours before restart, still there, logged in an hour after restart, vehicles completely gone. I havent tested many tents but they seem to not save stuff either. getting frustrating having to fix vehicles everyday, be nice to have it when the whole group gets together instead of spending 3 hours finding parts and vehicles again. wouldnt be so bad if tents would save stuff, could just store alot of parts. but neither seem to be working.
