Which is why I was referring to an experienced programmer and not an intern. An experienced programmer and employee working on BattlEye who is familiar with the project should have no problem implementing this swiftly. You wouldn't ask an intern to restructure your company's database, would you now. Following instructions is what probably over 95% of the cheaters do, but the length and complexity of those instructions directly correlates to how many of them there are and this brings us back to exactly the point we are arguing about, following 20 steps is not nearly as desirable as following 10 and a fraction will say 'fuck it'. A fraction gone is a success if the fraction is large enough to warrant the work. While you are right about testing and debugging, DayZ is in alpha and dozens of bans happen on a daily basis - it's almost as if it were the perfect testing environment after internal testing proved reliable enough. For all we know BattlEye already provides this feature but Bohemia Interactive hasn't requested it, and no matter what, it would still be a feature the company can use in future contracts. I won't try to argue further about it, it's obvious there are different opinions on the matter. All I will say is that I never claimed this to be accomplished by snapping your fingers but I think we can both agree on this task not being a major challenge for an experienced programmer who is familiar with BattlEye's system.

Standalone Price Tags - A Solution To Cheating?
s4pphire replied to s4pphire's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I understand, I just figured I'd leave the pricing options that aren't related to cheating out because they wouldn't be relevant to the thread. -
'Educating' myself on the subject is quite unnecessary as I am well aware that someone who wants to circumvent it, will circumvent it. I must have stated that about ten times by now, so let me make this a little clearer to you; it is an extremely easy feature to implement and even if it only prevents 5% from the cheaters returning, then it has been a success. It's as simple as this, there is a global ban list which is very much like a database and fetching and adding hardware IDs as well as IP addresses to an entry, is very little work for any experienced programmer. The structural change needed is probably the most complex thing in the matter, although it is quite likely that this feature is in place already if BI requested it. Then again, you seem to know the process so I won't bother explaining further. If you still fail to see the point I am trying to make here, go google hacks for Dayz or something, read a few forums and take a good look at how many clueless people are able to make use of these things, and while you are there, take another look at how many people are looking to purchase more keys to continue. A fraction of those people won't be willing to bother circumventing it and another fraction won't even know how. I don't know if the total percentage is 1%, 5% or 20%, but like I have said previously, even preventing 5% from returning is significant for the small investment needed. At this stage, it is rather obvious that a problem exists and just like everybody else, I'd like to see it fixed completely too; but as we have seen, those expectations are frankly unrealistic and thus small changes like these at the very least improve the situation to a certain extent.

That's pretty much my thought behind this; implementing hardware and IP bans is a very simple process and the only reason against it is the additional revenue generated by people purchasing additional copies.

Standalone Price Tags - A Solution To Cheating?
s4pphire replied to s4pphire's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The 'pricing is not a solution' is covered by the first option in the poll; because that's the currently planned pricing model, I could have made that clearer, I guess. I'm also aware that the standalone addresses the trusting nature of the Arma II engine, but as with all games, cheating will still exist. Maybe a different pricing model than the one planned would improve the situation further. Personally I agree that non-cheating customers shouldn't have to pay extra for this feature, but if it would help fight the problem then I would be happy to do so. It's obvious that a higher price tag would improve the situation, but to what extent and at what cost is the point of this thread. -
While that's true, it would still be an extra layer of security that wouldn't really come at any additional cost.

Banning server hoppers (Barracks Hoppers)
s4pphire replied to tandwan's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
Then go log in at a place you would normally consider safe to log out in, make your way to the barracks, loot them and go back; that way you will expose yourself to the risk everyone else has to expose themselves to. A normal person does not log out inside the barracks unless there is a clear intention to abuse the mechanic upon logging back in. It's pretty damn clear what the guy's intention is, banning morons who log in the barracks, breeze through and log out while completely avoiding the risk of ever having to go outside the building. I'ts not exactly cool for someone who plays on the server regularly to spend 30 minutes running and being denied loot without a fighting chance. As an admin, I wouldn't hesitate to ban for certain types of server-hopping, alt-f4ing, ghosting and other ridiculous shit as long as some proof was available. If it results in being blacklisted, then so be it, which is precisely what stops me from hosting my own server. -
Does sniping need a nerf?
s4pphire replied to Slickback (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Sniping is extremely effective against inexperienced players and once rifles as well ammunition become limited, the effectiveness will be drastically reduced to where it should be. Think about it, the number of snipers will be reduced by a huge amount, .50 cals will be exceptionally rare and the average guy won't have more than civilian clothing and a CZ or DMR. -
G17 mags? Cooked Meat? Why would anyone go out of their way to properly hide a tent with those contents?

So I found an MK-48 Mod...
s4pphire replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
One of the best weapons in the game if you combine it with the right sidearm. -
So... I just broke -1,000,000 humanity.
s4pphire replied to spankimus's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
While it's a pretty dick move to snipe Cherno/Elektro, I can't really blame him. I have spent many, many hours in the last couple of weeks looking for action at NWAF, Stary and the north in general and the investment really doesn't feel worth it at the moment. As an example, I have probably spent 5-6 hours roaming the northern areas today and I have come across one person who spotted me first, missed five shots, then instantly alt f4'ed as I spotted him and sure enough attempted to ghost, when again, he failed to achieve a kill because he missed and alt f4'ed again. While I'd love to see more activity further north, it's quite obvious most people simply do not bother due to the existing problems, which is understandable, but expecting people to sit at the airfield for hours isn't the solution. Once ammunition, weapons and items in general are rare again, everything will resolve itself steadily and camping in Cherno/Elektro won't be the only source of reliable 'pvp'. As for the TWS, the advantage it brings to the table isn't worth the impact it has on your performance once it's gone so enjoy it. -
I didn't watch the whole video but there is a bug which causes a server not to spawn any tents after a restart, another restart tends to fix it. I play on DE 1456 too, I have never encountered problems with the server until today actually, usually the population is always around 15-20 during peak times but today it reached 40 and of course the scripting was rampant. Got sniped through three tree-lines from 1000+ metres away, killed by a teleporter and an invisible sniper. Pretty sure that your case is just a bug, though. Why would someone go through the trouble of logging on your server and teleport to your tents, when they can just spawn what they want with a script..

No, the game wasn't free. If you had done your research, though, you would realize what kind of game Arma II is and what Bohemia Interactive's target audience is. You have every right in the world to complain about Arma II itself if something isn't working as it should for you, just like you will have every right to complain once you purchase the DayZ standalone. Regarding your estimation, even if those numbers were true, I would believe that it only accounts for a small fraction of Bohemia's revenue considering the existing contracts between military training and so on. A company will not simply change their product in an instant because of a mod that all of a sudden became popular and seeing them encourage the mod in the first place should be considered a good start. While Rocket is an employee of said company, I very much doubt that he will see much, if any, of the profits generated through his mod. This obviously wouldn't apply to the standalone version, but for now it can be safe to assume that much of his work has not been rewarded (and others working on DayZ). I'm sorry but I just don't understand your logic; there are many, many money-whoring companies out there such as EA and Activision and yet you choose a guy who probably got less than he deserved for his work so far? The only real problem here is DayZ having its problems and appealing to a wider range of an audience led to the mod to become too popular, too fast and people making purchases without enough research. If it really isn't playable/enjoyable for you, get rid of DayZ and try Arma instead. Give it some time and come back at a later stage.

I'd be happy with that mechanic, although personally I would still use Vent/TS to communicate with friends simply because it's more effective and doesn't take away from the experience for me. But I do think if you want to talk to unknown people on the server, it shouldn't occur through a generic chat channel and the whole radio idea would be an ideal way to draw the line between immersion and ease. As for Vent/TS, I don't think it's a problem because those people already know each other so I think having an external way of communication is fine. The whole 'anyone in Cherno?' thing just needed to go away and require more effort to establish contact to create a better sense of immersion as well as being more of an emergency tool than anything else. While seeing people cry about you sniping them or whatever was amusing and all, it really doesn't belong.
-
This isn't World of Warcraft; a global channel completely defeats the purpose and destroys the game's immersion. Rocket has stated that a properly developed form of the radio or similar could give similar features, which in my opinion, is the correct way to address the issue. You have most of the tools available to you, what you do with them is up to you. No one is stopping you from running up to someone and communicating with them.

I very much doubt anyone will give you an actual server name, all I can suggest when looking for a server to look for something that averages 15-25 players on a consistent basis. You'll have to research it a little on the multiple server websites to see if the server is stable, admin abuse and so on but investing a few hours into that usually rewards you with a quality server you can play on 24/7 without having to switch or deal with retarded shit. For example a server that averaged 35-40 players for two weeks and the coming weeks went down to 10-15 is usually shit and there tends to be a reason for that, so personally I'd rather research the server list a little and avoid retarded people who shut the server down whenever they are offline or simply have no idea how to protect a server from the most common problems.

You will never be able to shoot a target at 1000m
s4pphire replied to devianc's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yet any experienced player can tell you it's not a hard thing to accomplish in the right conditions, there is no need to prove anything if someone makes such a ridiculous statement. Or, stop being lazy as shit, open the editor and see just how accurate these weapons are at 1.5km ranges. Why the fuck should anyone have to upload a video to prove something as obvious as this to you. -
You will never be able to shoot a target at 1000m
s4pphire replied to devianc's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I've gotten multiple 1000+ kills, not hard. Fog is dynamic and with good weather visibility goes way above 1000 metres. Oh and, 1000+ is the only purpose of the .50 cals. -
Camping towns/airfields
s4pphire replied to Col. Kurtz (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Depends where you camp in Stary, camping campers is so easy there at 1000+ metres away. People always go over the hill behind the tents without a care in the world, and others even sit there camping with AS50s at 200 range. -
Running Speed - Heroes faster then bandits
s4pphire replied to puppetworx's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Running speed is actually an interesting perk, and it doesn't cause balance problems either since a survivor is less likely to harm you because of it. One thing I fucking hate though, is the ridiculous heartbeat feature which allows you to spot people in trees. A person's actions/appearance should be enough to give you that information, the heartbeat crap has no place on veteran servers. -
I've seen players with 20+ days survived...HOW?
s4pphire replied to Aypoc's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I play a lot per day currently and roam the coastal areas, Stary, NWAF and Skalisty for pvp most of the time, and I seem to survive for 5-6 days on average currently. Haven't encountered a hacker on my medium-pop server, ever. I have only ever seen two blatant hackers in months and those were both on high-pop servers. So I don't know, either I'm extremely lucky or people suck at picking servers. -
It happens when you join a server with a different version than your own, which causes you to hang on the loading screen and your location data being lost in the process. So no, make sure versions match and you shouldn't have problems.

Admin "scans" player gear, threatens ban/kick
s4pphire replied to SoWeMeetAgain's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
Kicking/banning someone for illegitimate gear is perfectly fine. It's pretty damn obvious you aren't supposed to have it if it's not in the actual mod, don't you think. Rocket's statement of players not receiving a ban for using it is obviously because some players may come across said items without knowing they aren't legit and would be a rather extreme measure of punishment. If you know it isn't legit, you have no excuse and just because you randomly came across it, doesn't justify you using it. That said, I couldn't really care less if someone walks around with a G36C SD or similar, but once the AS50 TWS comes into play, it should be addressed by a warning/kick/ban because that thing is an abomination and completely out of place in DayZ. -
I placed an AS50 TWS I found in my camp after it was discovered as bait, didn't work unfortunately. They even used barbed wire around that tent as a 'fuck you' statement. I didn't expect that, especially because I suspected one of the people to be a cheater.

I don't understand why people feel so entitled yet everything they were given was completely free of charge. Given all the problems the mod is facing, mostly cheat-related, and how many people are willing to put up with it is a good indicator of how successful the mod is (and most likely will be). From personal experience, my hundreds of hours played seem to suggest otherwise considering that I am still enjoying myself and my guess is that I'm not the only one. Did I mention that I got hundreds of hours (and counting) of entertainment for free?
