    Perhaps the women could be like those gypsy women who oddly seem to grow hair on their cheeks. I think I've covered all the bases now

    I think a nice visual indicator of how many days your character has survived would be for a beard to slowly grow culminating in a full Jesus beard so if you saw anyone with such a beard they would instantly command respect and you would know not to mess with them. Might also be something of a goal - who can attain the holy jesus beard.
