Suggestions for the DayZ standalone - thinking outside of the limitations of an Arma 2 mod.
GiggityGump replied to ruarz's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I don't think that I've seen this suggested yet, and I don't really expect it to be in the game. I just think it is kind of a fun idea. What if you could modify vehicles in the game to add stuff like armor and weapons? Think: the A-team. Take a regular car, truck, bus, etc. and modify it by welding on armor and adding guns. New items like welding kits could be added along with stuff like scrap steel and sheet steel for making the armor. Mounted weapons could be limited to launchers and LMG's which you would have to find in the usual ways. Armored vehicles could have reduced speed and visibility (eye slits for drivers and passengers being the only way to see out). Mounted weapons would mean that you would have to give up at least one passenger capacity for the mounts for weapon and ammo. Steel and welding kits could be extremely rare items, maybe the most rare in the game to keep the "tanks" from being too overpowered. That would help make these "custom" armored vehicles very rare themselves. I can see the problems and abuses that would come from this, but I still think that its a really fun idea. If not DayZ, some game needs to do it. Imagine the looks on people's faces when they hear a small car coming toward them, getting them excited thinking that they can kill the occupants and take their gear and maybe their ride too, only to see that it has steel plating and a M240 attatched to the roof. *edit to fix typo -

Ray shield bubble. Gotta hire Chewie and Han to take out the generator on the forest moon. ^_^ Now, I'm gonna find an ATV and outfit it with armor, A-team style. Eyeslits for driving. M249 mounted on a turret on top for the backseat rider. -
Hotfix Build 1.7.2.5 Rolling Update
GiggityGump replied to rocket's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
Well, I finally updated to the newest (so far) beta (95883) and updated the mod, too. I did uninstall SixUpdater and just use the torrent. I didn't really use SU anyway, and this way seemed to go smoother. So far, the only military area I've been by was NW Airfield, but no artifacts to speak of. I haven't encountered any with dead bodies so far either. Although, I guess that its not saying much for my part because I haven't had a problem with the artifacts in days. I think it got better for me when I changed Video Memory to "Default" a few days ago. I've only played on one server so far. The first that I tried hung on the Loading screen. That still seems to vary server to server for me. I feel lucky (knock on wood) to not be having the same problems that others are. Is it possible that some people installed the free version of ArmA and that is causing them to still see the artifacts after the update? I didn't think so, but it popped in my head, so I thought that I'd put it out there. Now, bring on the 1.7.3! :D -

Pink tutus, unlimited tin cans, and wall-busting tanks? Sounds like a party! Count me in. ^_^ -
I think that he was only comparing the price of DayZ's standalone alpha + Arma 2 to the current price of Skyrim. I'm pretty sure it wasn't a comparison of gameplay or production quality or any of that stuff.

/sarcasm So this is going to use Unreal Engine 4, right? ;) *edit: I really just wanted to say that to confuse the people obsessing over the game engine. It'll be on whatever engine it'll be on. I don't think that will affect whether or not you're going to buy it.

As for the people complaining about having to pay for the standalone game after only buying CO to play DayZ, you need to understand that this is a business. This is how it works when mods become games. They have to make money, or we wouldn't have the same quality of games to play. The people and companies that make the games want and need to get paid, too. As for the people complaining about the above people, you need to understand that a lot of people have a very limited gaming budget. PC gaming can be outrageously expensive to begin with. Some people have to give up one thing to get another. I, for one, had to choose between buying ArmA to play DayZ and getting a different game that I was more sure that I would like. It was only because of the Steam Summer Sale that I convinced myself to give DayZ a shot. I'm hooked. I will buy the standalone, especially with a pricing model like Minecraft's. But, not everybody will be able to do that. For some people, the $20-30 that they just spent getting CO to play DayZ means that they can't afford the standalone, at least for a while. All I'm saying is that both sides need to be more understanding and respectful. Plus, sometimes people just need to vent on both sides of an issue. That being said, I do think it is a cool idea that the standalone version have some bonus in it for players of the alpha mod. Nothing like an exclusive weapon or vehicle or anything that will essentially be an unfair advantage. Just a little something, maybe cosmetic, that thanks the million+ people who participated in the game's evolution. I don't expect it, but it would be cool.

Thanks, that's what I figured. I'm running the latest beta patch, but in that file, there is only FSAA not any FXAA. Close, its a Dell instead of Alienware. Its thew new 17R Special Edition. Better specs and bigger screen than the 14x for the same price as the base. -

Under the Manage 3D settings, can anybody tell me what the difference is in "Multiple Display performance mode" and "Single Display performance mode?" I think that I know, and I changed it to Single Display, but I just want to be sure. I've been out of the PC gaming scene for a while, so some of the settings are foreign to me. lol Also, my file has FSAA but not FXAA. Same? *edited to add last question -

I'm on a laptop with a GT 650m, but I think that I'll try it. At least the ambient occlusion. -
It can be frustrating surviving on your own when the loot spawns don't go your way, though. It happened to me the other night. I was out of cooked meat, and my hunger was to the point of me bleeding. I searched 3 smaller villages and 2 bigger towns and couldn't find a single can of food. Between each town/village, I was looking through the forests and scanning all the open fields with my binoculars for signs of wild animals, but couldn't find a single one. Eventually I found a single can of pasta in a house. By that time, my Blood was down to 560. Hard to search when you keep passing out. lol The pasta got me through till I spotted a lone rabbit in a field. I knew my luck was changing. I didn't get the rabbit. It took off before I could get close, but I spotted a sheep. After eating the meat, I turned around and there was a goat standing 30m away. Now, I'm back over 9600 Blood and doing ok. It just takes some patience sometimes.

Buildings with doors you can't open...

I can agree with the stump axe and definitely with the pumpkins. They might as well throw in fruit trees without the option to eat fruit. Its all about how much time and effort they can put into such things, server demands, and if the game engine can support it. As for gutting and cutting up animals with the hatchet, that's probably a balance thing. Games are all about balance. You may get a faster car in a game, but often that means it will steer/handle a little worse. The guns have to be balanced through damage and attachments and so forth or some will become so overpowered that the others will serve no purpose. Rarity also helps balance. The best things in the game are probably the hardest to find. I still haven't got a rangefinder for instance. If the hatchet could be used to gut and cut animals, then still be used for harvesting wood, and as a melee weapon, then the hatchet would be an even more valuable resource/item. It would almost be considered overpowered. Most likely, they would be forced to make it a rarer spawn. That would make it harder for new player spawns and beginners to find a hatchet and use it to fend off the occasional overzealous zombie, harvest wood, or kill that boar that has no clue you're about to whack it for dinner. Having the knife take care of the butchering and cleaning helps with the balance and makes it so that both can be more common spawns. In real life, we would probably use the hatchet for more things if we didn't have a knife, but once we had the knife, we'd use that, too. It would help preserve both the axe and the knife. On a side note, I talk too much. :/ -
Difference between Zed and Zombie?
GiggityGump replied to cindyanne1's topic in New Player Discussion
The inventory is definitely frustrating at times. PS: your forum avatar cracks me up for some reason -
I agree with trying to play on lower populated servers when you're alone and starting out. I haven't been playing long and always play alone late at night (can't really use any voice chat without waking everybody else up lol), so I try to stay on lower populated servers. Zombies can be enough of a problem when you have no weapons or just a sidearm. Less players means less to watch out for and avoid. That being said, I am still cautious. You never know where the other players are or when somebody new spawns in. I've been on servers with less than 5 people and still been sniped across a field in the middle of nowhere. The thing I try to remember when playing DayZ is that you live, and you learn ... but you probably learn more when you die.

I game on a laptop now, and I definitely don't have money to burn. I don't have anywhere to put a desktop anymore, so it wasn't an option. I would have built a new desktop if it was possible. I needed a new laptop and got one recently, but it isn't a gaming laptop, just one that can play games. I'm not trying to argue with you. I get what you meant. I just wanted to put it out there that not everybody is sporting an Alienware or Digital Storm, etc. As for the thread, I'm not the biggest Dell fan, but they do have last year's models and some refurbs on the site with discrete graphics and 2nd gen. i5 or i7 CPU's. You might find a deal there. Most other manufacturers have a clearance section or refurb section, too.

Man, I must have missed the "Chew Nose Off" keybinding in the Controls. I might have to scroll through again 'cause that sounds fun. muahahaha

I wonder how many, right now with things being the way they are, wouldn't just Alt-F4 and just take their shot. It might surprise you, but probably not. Instead of shooting them in the end though, maybe you should tell them it was your new clan initiation and now they have to help you find more members the same way.
