I can't imagine that being part of the forum team here is much fun at all. Seems like it would be a thankless job, especially lately. I don't know if I would do it even if I was begged. Here's hopin' you can keep your sanity. lol To the OP: I've run into graphica artifacts, randomly respawning on the beach, hackers/scripters/exploiters, crazy deaths to zombies, loading screen hell, etc, and I'm still in the HELL YEAH! camp. Don't let that kind of stuff get you down, nor the people who complain about them. They exist, but they aren't the whole picture. Welcome to DayZ. :)

If a suspected hacker is holding you hostage...
GiggityGump replied to herrjon's topic in New Player Discussion
I think he was saying "abort" in reference to Alt+F4 and not in reference to logging out by going to the menu and clicking "Abort" because you're going to bed or something normal. -

If you literally have nothing to lose, then you figuratively have nothing to lose, too. I say do something like you did. Mess with him right back. You'll just respawn fresh again anyway. You can always find a different server then. Take some whacks at them. Run to them instead of away. If they talk with a voice changer and claim to be some kind of demon or something, you talk in a high pitch and claim to be Tinkerbell's cousin Jimmy. They will probably lose interest anyway. -
Tired of getting pked? we've got a nice friendly server for ya, not saying it WON'T happen but it should be less likely
GiggityGump replied to XxAtlasxX's topic in New Player Discussion
If you're already playing on recruit servers, that's probably part of the reason you're constantly being killed. It should be much easier for others to spot you on a recruit server (or you them). Nametags are most likely turned on for one thing. It will not only give your name, but your range. Its like walking around holding a big sign over your head saying "I'm over here! Shoot me! Shoot me!" You might be better off playing on at least a regular server or, even better, a veteran server. Veteran servers should have nametags turned off. Maybe play on lower populated servers till you're more comfortable with the game, too. -
One thing to try (sorry if someone already told you this, I am tired and I think I missed a few posts up there ^) In Steam, right click on the OA link in your Library. Go to Properties. Go to the Local Files tab. Click Verify Integrity of Game Cache. If that doesn't help, you could always try redownloading the games from scratch.

YouTube proves that many times over. Honestly, I don't care about your age. If you're annoying, you're annoying. If you're not, you're not. But I do agree that it can be kind of awkward for some to play with people much younger than them. As far as clans and groups go, anything to do with games that requires me to apply to join or be recruited etc., I'm not interested. That's just something that isn't for me. I guess that I can kind of understand the reasons behind it, but I'll leave it to others. There are enough rules to life without following someone else's in a game that lets you play pretty much how you want.

Yeah, its Balota. South of the airstrip is a camp with tents and 4 stands. The tents don't have any loot but the stands do. There is also one port-o-john that has loot I think. It has barbed wire and a sandbag wall around the camp. Only one way in I think, through the gate. Don't expect too much loot, but you can get some stuff there. I've found a few shotguns and a couple pistols in the stands. You might get lucky, though. If you don't know where Balota is: it is on the southern coast of the map, east of Cherno, west of Komarovo.

After you put on the ghillie, it will look like it has reset to 0, but your humanity is still there. If you log out and back in, it should go back to the number it was before. It always has for me, but I have heard that sometimes it doesn't on the first try.

Pretty sure that was sarcasm, and I'm not sure that he got it. Its a shame really.

I was thinking the same thing. You said it first. It would be nice to get back the IQ point I just lost.

How come hacks cant be stopped, when they even post like this?
GiggityGump replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
In short, it should be tons better in the standalone. Like Ped said, it is a constant battle back and forth between services like BattlEye and exploiters (I think in most cases for this game, its a name that fits better) and not just for this game/mod. Basically, just about all games have exploiters/cheaters/hackers. The differences are whether or not you see what they're doing, whether or not it affects just the game for them or for other players too, and how effective the defenses against them are. In this case, there's only so much that can be done, and they're doing that in the best way that they can. In my experience, the only games that don't have hackers, exploiters, and cheaters are games that aren't even being played. -
Found AS50TWS take it or leave it?
GiggityGump replied to conthefruiter's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I was going to (jokingly) say go to the coast and find the newest of noobs in Elektro or Cherno and give it to them with a message like "Good luck. You might have half a chance of making it out of here alive with this." run around a corner and log out. -
What Is you'r View on the crossbow?
GiggityGump replied to designidea's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I like it, but I think it could use some improvements. The good thing is that it sounds like they are planned for the future. I think it was the standalone that was going to get the crossbow improvements, but maybe they could do some testing of them in the mod first. It would be nice. The quiver will be great. I don't have a problem finding ammo for crossbows, but the inventory space is something I'm loathe to give up. I have had trouble recovering the bolts. I like the idea of the bolt going directly into a zombie (or player or animal) inventory after being shot, or killed at least. I don't have much of a problem with the sights, but I would prefer it to have something like a red-dot or maybe a lower powered scope, like a 1.5X. Increased range would be nice, too. Nothing dramatic though. I don't want a crossbow that has a 12X scope and one-shots players from a half-mile away. Although, that could be funny in other games. lol -

To those who look down on bandits/pvp...
GiggityGump replied to daspope's topic in New Player Discussion
That was totally random and off-topic. It actually made me laugh. Thank you, even if you didn't say it for those reasons. I don't have a problem with PVP for most part. I have a problem with people killing new spawns near the coast and so forth. It just seems pointless. I like the idea of people "patrolling" the coastal spawn areas to take out bandits and spawn trollers, but its a flawed concept. Not everybody in those areas that is geared up is a bandit or looking to kill anybody. You almost have to witness them doing it to know their intentions. This goes double with the problems with logging in and randomly being on the beach now. I know that it has happened to me multiple times in the past few days, and all I wanted to do was get back to the areas I was in when I logged out. I tend to loot any good spots that are close or on my way. That doesn't mean I'm looking to kill anybody. I'd rather leave them alone and have them leave me alone. I'll help out with some food or bandages etc. if I have it to give, too. I guess what I'm getting at is that I disagree that PVP is the only thing that makes DayZ fun, for me at least. I'm enjoying just trying to survive. I like trying to avoid having to PVP. I realize that I will die soon. Probably to some zombies in some stupid way or a sniper that I missed when I scanned the tree line, but for now, I like having my stuff, finding more, upgrading my gear, making sure I've seen the entire map, and stuff like that. I figure the next time I die, maybe I'll try to find a boat and just cruise the coast til I run out of fuel. :D -

Zeehon23, your love for zombies disturbs me. If you log in and find yourself suddenly on the beach, you might as well get over it. It happens, for now at least. Look at it as a chance to explore the area around you again. Maybe you'll get lucky. Maybe you'll stumble upon that downed chopper you've been hoping for. Maybe you'll find a camp with nobody around. Which brings to mind another tip: If you loot someone else's camp, hurry up and GTFO of there. You never know when somebody might log back in and walk right up behind you. -
 ^ Another reason we get a bad reputation.

There are threads in the forums for hooking up with people to play with you in squads and so forth. Look here: http://dayzmod.com/forum/index.php?/forum/7-dayz-general-discussion/ here: http://dayzmod.com/forum/index.php?/forum/14-survivor-hq/ and here: http://dayzmod.com/forum/index.php?/forum/29-bandit-campfire/ Also, this cracked me up:

I agree with Siberian. Each time that I've lost a good weapon for whatever reason (even the few times it was to brainfarts and inventory bugs), all I could think about afterward was what kind of cool stuff I might find next.

I wasn't knockin' ya for it, just thought it was funny that you were the one to say it. :D Tip: nighttime affects how visible you are to zombies, but they can hear just as good as they can during the day. -
Not everybody who went stayed for the entire event. I'm betting that a lot of people only got one day. Many people also have laptops and smartphones. I'm speaking to those people. I don't expect all the news for everyone instantly. I just wanted to say that if you have it, put it on here if you can so the rest of us can see. Don't try to make me out to be impatient and stupid. Thank you. :) PS:

To expand on this: you don't have to do the whole bootcamp, pick the missions that are more likely to help in DayZ. Focus on learning the ins and outs of movement and inventory. Spend time in the shooting range. Do it more than once, till you feel comfortable handling the weapons. Even if you're experienced in FPS games, each game and each gun handles differently. Adjust your sensitivity and "Smoothing" to match your preference. Again, go with what feels good to you. Practice flying and driving in the bootcamp. Vehicles are fairly rare in DayZ. They're plentiful in the bootcamp. Throw some 'nades. Throwing in DayZ takes practice. A well-thrown can will distract zombies. Smoke grenades are excellent for buying time in high zombie count areas. A frag grenade can do a lot of damage. A well placed 'nade will do a number on a squad who is bunched too closely together. If you're in the edge of the tree line and someone takes a shot at you, pretend you're on fire. Stop, drop (prone), and roll. Randomly go left and right to make yourself a less predictable target. If you can roll to a conifer (pine) tree, you can roll under the low branches. You're less visible here. Get up and run in the oposite direction, but PLEASE zig and zag. Serpentine running left and right and don't stop moving. Don't do the same pattern. Vary your movement. Its a good idea to get use to doing this anyway, especially in open fields. You never know who is watching. If you're on a lower populated server, hit the "P" key now and then and see just how many people are on there with you. You may be the only one. You may have 10 new server mates. Its good to know how many people are out there. You'll have an idea of how likely you are to run into anybody. Don't let your guard down though. I've run into the other guy a few times when we were the only two left on the servers. Cooked Meat gives you more blood than beans. Beans are 200. Cooked meat gives you 800. If you can't get transfusions, keeping a couple steaks in your pack comes in handy. Also, keep your thirst in mind. Even if you have a water bottle (canteen), it might be a good idea to keep one soda with you. You might not get a chance to refill that bottle for a while. Hunger and thirst eventually make you lose blood, so you can't totally ignore them unless you don't plan on living long anyway. *edit: Forgot to mention: Not everybody knows that some guns in-game can share ammo. If you're not sure which ones, you can search the usual online sources. -
Most released retail games have at least some bugs, some are even game-breaking. I had a the same artifact problem in Battlefield 3 as people are having in DayZ, and that never got fixed. now on topic: somebody back there said something about "thanks for the t-shirts." T-shirts?! Why aren't there any pics of these shirts? Please people, if you got to go to GamesCom and saw something interesting DayZ-wise, post pics for those of us who didn't get to go! :D
