  1. Rather than focus solely on increasing their numbers, they should 'fix the zombies' first. For example right now hey cant turn very quickly, so kiting thme around is simply a matter of moving sideways, while hammering them with a melee weapon or fists.

Poll: Are you happy with update news/management?

Posting detailed changelogs is sufficient. I'd rather have rocket and the rest focus on development than pointless feedback.

question about the DayZ mod for ARMA

The mods have more features than Standalone does. So if you're not interested in testing, you might want to pick it up, especially if you're not planning on playing other games.

    India forum spam.... wtf

It's not a guy or a gal. It's a robot. The person who coded it might not even be Indian.

    zombie games and gender issues

But DayZ doesn't have to be like this. That's why I'm always going to advocate the simulator approach to the development of this game. I'm hoping that vehicles have authentic controls, for example cars should have all of the 3 pedals and 5/6 gears mapped to the keyboard (or just ahev an increase gear/decrease gear buttons). Helicopters might be more of an issue because you have to have a joystick + pedal combo to control one ~realistically, but the Take on Helicopters: normal mode type of controls would suffice in this case methinks. This would increase the value of people who can drive. Medicine is the same. They should assign medical substances to cure the diseases they would cure in real life. This would increase the value of doctors/medics. My point is, they could make just another game that wastes your time, or they could make a game that can actually teach you something practical. I also need to make the point, that once more features, like base building, are added and if the managing of these things required teamwork, that would encourage teamwork. And lastly, I wouldn't necessarily call games like WoW timewasters. People need to socialize, and if that's where you do most of your free time social interactions, and have friends that play the game with you, that's not procrastination. I hope this makes sense. I'm kinda tired, so making coherent posts might not happen on my part right now.

    zombie games and gender issues

I'm not sure where you get the idea that women are drastically less prevalent in DayZ than in, say, CoD. The Walking Dead example was bad, because you're comparing a TV show to a game, 2 very different media by nature of interaction. I know that a bunch of women play games like CoD, so it's not the gunplay that 'drives them off.' My guess, and it is just a guess, is that a lot of women don't know that much about DayZ, or they know too well that the game doesn't have many features in it yet. Also, I have to say this since you brought it up, but a lot of people who frequent the different DayZ forums don't have their social needs met either. I'm one of those people. I'm still waiting for new features, that would require you to cooperate with a group or simply provide incentives to work together. The game, as it is right now, does not entice me to play it. There is nothing to do but loot and shoot, neither of which are very social practises. Unless someone very close to you plays the game, you're out of luck when it comes to social interactions, because just hanging around the map and talking about random shit doesn't really happen between strangers.

    light signal w/ mirrors

Why not. Problem is the light wouldn't be visible beyond 1km because of the network bubble. Things that happen beyond 1km from your character are not broadcast to you, at least I think it was 1km.

    Grappling Hooks and Climbing

Why would this be a bad thing? Maybe the re-acquirement of the sniper's loot is a bit meta-gamey, but not getting to the loot should be a risk that each preson should face, if things like climbing gear were put into the game, which I doubt because of the amount if work it would require. They would have to add new features to the engine and change the way houses work if they wanted to do this properly, since currently the only way to climb, defined in the engine, is to use a ladder. They could do it so that if you used an item on a wall, that wall turned into a temporary instance of a ladder, but that would not only look clunky as fuck, it would require houses to be different than they currently are. So, no matter what, the engine and building/tree assets would have to be redefined in the engine if this was to be put into the game, which I don't see happening because of the amount of effort required. I believe rocket already expressed his reluctance to change the building assets, when someone asked him about being able to climb through windows to enter/exit buildings last autumn/fall. It would be cool, don't get me wrong, but climbing probably won't happen until DayZ 2 is made.
  9. It's not that people shouldn't be critiquing the game and it's features. It's just that people seem to have bought the game without reading the HUGE disclaimer stating what an early access game is on the game's steam page. People also don't seem to read the disclaimer that is displayed every, friggin', time, the game starts up. They just don't understand that they are testing the game, not playing the final product.

    Central Hive Poll

There's your answer, really. This is also how and why every other MMO in existence does it.
  11. thesodesa

    Central Hive Poll

The entire game is coded so that the server is expectng there to be a hive, be it the public central one or a private one. They are not going to change the code at this point, since that would be a ridiculous amount of work. Plus, if there wasn't a central hive, your gear couldn't be saved between servers. What if the server you usually played on wasn't working, and the data of your charater was only stored on that server? You would have to start all over again on the new server, even if you didn't want to.

    longevity

There's whole, free books in the game, lots of them. Besides that there really isn't anything to do at the moment, unless you want to go for a walk around Chernarus, on a killing spree, or log onto the experimental servers to test new features when they release a new patch. I hope you read the disclaimer on the Steam page saying that the main purpose of playing the game at this point is to help the devs test new features on a massive scale. That's kind of the idea behind releasing early access games. If that doen't interest you, you might want to wait and come back later so you don't get bored of the game already at this point, when it isn't even ready.

How do you think DayZ Standalone is going?

I've found, that in addition to myself, most of the DayZ community I've engaged with really don't like the idea of putting ANY visible statistics or numbers into the game. This is to avoid it becoming an arcady shooter, where the main point is increasing those numbers, instead of steering it in the direction of a survival simulator, where the main aspect of the game is engaging with people in a realistic survival situation (be it violent or cooperative interactions). The uncertainty that comes with not knowing exactly how much you have of everything, blood included, is a central part of an experience like that. Plus, it's unrealistic. In real life people can't, for example, tell exactly how fatigued or dehydrated they are, or how low their blood sugar levels have dropped, until the effects of excess fatigue/dehydration or low blood sugar hit them in the face in the form of increased aggression on their part (a typical symptom of an oncoming insulin shock by the way, for any of you who might have to deal with diabetic people in the future). When it comes to games, I have an obsession with numbers and collectibles, so i know for a fact that if counters like that were put into the game, I couldn't stop myself from just grinding those numbers up, which is stressful by the way, and captures my attention for hours on end. I'd just like to be able for once to play an open world game where those damn stressful but oh so alluring numbers aren't staring at me from every friggin' direction, urging me to waste my time grinding for stats or collecting flags (I'm looking at you, assassin's creed). As for loot, it would be nice to see the game shift the focus from looting, to crafting items (like tools and clothing) from materilals you've either gathered from nature or salvaged from buildings/loot piles. This includes crafting weapons yourself. Guns and bullets should be a rare luxury item. I mean, how long would the ammunition supplies and the guns themselves last in an apocalypse, where there was no-one to manufacture ammo or spare parts for the guns. When it comes to game graphics, the game runs on directx 9, which means it doesn't have any of those new and fancy particle- and lighting effects and shadows and megatextures, that would bog an older computer down. The reason the game is so laggy is because the server software the game is ran on isn't finished and optimized yet. All your computer is doing is sending keystrokes to the server, and delivering the game image from the server to your screen. The server does all the heavy processing, so in theory once they sort the server software out, even older computers shouldn't have a huge issue running the game. Rocket has said in the past that the game would require similar specifications from computers as arma 2 does. It might actually run better than arma 2, they just need to optimize it for modern processors, with multiple cores, because right now the game engine can only utilize a single core, both on the client and server side. Offloading most of the processing from the CPU, that is currently doing almost all of the work, to the graphics card would also do wonders for performance. What I'm saying is, it can only get better and things are being worked on.

Do you want cars NOW or LATER?

What's the point of having cars if they don't work at all? I doubt they have even created new assets for them yet, which they have to do because the cars will work completely differently on a techical level because of the new physics engine. They have to get that working first, or see if it works at all, before it makes any sense for them to decide how the cars are going to work. The vehicles better work at least on some level before they are put in, is what I'm saying. Otherwise it would make no sense to even test them.

so what happens if i swim away from land?

This is one of the reasons i would like them to put encumbrance and stamina into the game. It should be possible to run out of stamina and drown, and how much weight you are carrying with you should affect how quickly this occurred and how fast you could swim. It would increase the importance of vehicles , boats in this case, drastically. Well, you get wet while swimming, which you dont want in the winter, but people might still resort to swimming to one of the islands (in full combat gear + a rucksack) in the summer if a limiting factor like this wasn't in place.
  16. I would agree with you, if it wasn't for the fact that I'm not really playing the game a whole lot. I'm not playing it, because of the exact reason you mentioned: I don't want to get tired of it at this point in time, when there are practically no features in the game yet. The reason I bought it at this point was to save me a few euros in the future, and to get to test new features as they are put in. Also, I'm not ready to state as fact that the game would have been better off with the old engine. What I would state as fact is that there is no way they could push the player amount per server and base building and other features like that with the old arma 2 engine, since it wasn't made to support more than a few dozen players on one server at a time. Like Dean has stated in the past, they rewrote huge chunks of the engine, which is almost like making a new one from scratch. From my understanding the author of the engine doesn't have previous experience with MMO-style engines either, which is why it took them so long to finish the nework bubble and release the alpha. If someone knows more about Marek Spanel's history as a dev, feel free to correct me on this point, but as far as I know, he has mainly worked on mil sims. This is why I'm not at all suprised that the game isn't further into development yet, and it is also why I can be so patient about it.
  17. What do you mean they only just now made the servers do all of the work? I'm pretty damn sure that the only thing clients have been doing, is sending key strokes to the server right from the beginning. That was one of the things that delayed the release of the alpha, changing the engine to offload all of the processing to the server, instead of the clients doing all of the processing, like it used to in previous arma titles. The lag and desync is caused most likely by something else that they did to the server code very recently. Or am I misinterpreting what you said and going on a rant for nothing?

    Layered Clothing.

I believe Rocket said they would not be implementing this, since they would have to rethink and redo how the player model works entirely. Too lazy to dig up a link now, but still... Then again, they did mention that they would be putting additional features to the game, since they could now afford to because of the massive sales, so maybe this isn't completely out of the question.

    Sweets and toothache

You wouldn't even have to implement a mechnic like slower eating, although I'm not saying the devs shouldn't do that. You can catch a deadly infection if you have rotten teeth and no access to a dentist. To combat this, maybe you should be able to wash your teeth(with water and a brush). Not a completely useless suggestion, since it would add challenge to the game, but it wouldn't make me cry if it wasn't implemented.

    ArmA 3 Stances in DayZ

But wouldn't it be kind of difficult to even find an artery to poke an IV catheter at, since they run below the layer of tissue where veins are located. Veins run just below the skin, arteries run deeper. This is why people often apply, for example, a compression band wrongly, because to stop the flow of blood from the heart outwards (like you might want to do in the case of a field amputation), you need to tie a limb so tightly, that it seriously causes pain to the victim. Only then do you actually block the arteries. I do agree with you by the way. I just felt like I had to make that point.

Allow players to choose approximate spawning area.

I'm not liking the sound of this. Random spawns in the middle of nowhere are better, because they go along well with the whole disorientation aspect of this game.
  22. thesodesa

Stand alone attachment system = COD

This should definitely be fixed to better reflect the way things are in reality.
  23. It would be really nice to spawn somewhere in the middle of nowhere, in a forest with nothing but trees around you. This would make it difficult to take advantage of maps to determine your location and therefore the fastest way to the nearest military weapon spawn.

i need motivation to start playing again

Personally, I just play the game enough to occasionally test the game and to keep in touch with a group that I found, that has a same kind of mentality when it comes to playing the game as I do. I'm going to wait for more features to be added, before I start playing 'seriously', whatever that means. :) If you're not motivated to play the game as it is, you shoud just find something lse to play while you wait for more features. If this all about the fear of dying, however, I'm not sure what to say, since that is an integral part of this game.
  25. Did you not read the "If I didn't know any better" -part? I am well aware of the fact that we are testing. I was simply talking from the point of view of someone who doesn't know much about this particular project. Still, point taken. Have some beans.
