New Dev Blog Report: November 2012

Thank you. As I don't like Reddit, Facebook and similar sites, I tend to not use them, thus missing out on information such as this. Still no info regarding the usage of Linux servers?

New Dev Blog Report: November 2012

I read through a great deal of the posts here, skimmed most of the rest, and skipped a bunch of the bickering. However, the most important two questions I have regarding the standalone are the following: 1. I know that the DevTeam has expressed that they are interested in making the game accessible without major handicaps to people with disabilities such as colorblindness (currently, the only easy way to track your health/food/etc is by a subtly color-changing icon that color blind people won't be able to detect very well if at all providing a huge disadvantage to those people) and hearing problems (Ways of fiding out whether or not you're being shot when you can, say, only hear from one ear as a poster in another thread mentioned) and so on. My question here is whether or not this is priority for initial/shortly following release or if it is one of those things that will be done down the road 6 months from now? This is a major selling point to my community as we have plenty of disabled people willing and wanting to play the game but discouraged by the unfriendliness towards their handicaps. 2. You mentioned private servers for private communities going to be a major part of the standalone. This pleases me, but it raises an old question. Will there be Linux hosting support in the near future, or is that completely off the table for the conceivable future? My gaming community has a high-end Linux server that we use for other games, it would be ill advised for us to switch to windows to be able to host DayZ servers (Hence why we haven't already; coupled with the concerns in point #1). It would allow us to contribute to the community in a way we deem "safe" for our members. I must follow up that I am quite pleased with what I'm seeing here. I don't like Steam's ball-breaking agreements any more than some people here do, but I've used it for a few years and I must say I am quite pleased by it generally. I completely understand the issues of being able to handle massive traffic over a short period of time during popular launches. Most people here probably either didn't experience or don't remember World of Warcraft release, which was also a nightmare, albeit not quite to the scale of Diablo 3 (Which, iirc, was labelled as the most pre-ordered game of all time?) which I'm quite pleased to say I had no part in because I am against Activision's policies of being anti-consumer (Yes, even more so than Valve). In short, I'm quite pleased with the decisions being made here in regards to Steam even if we do have to essentially pay money to hand Valve our copies of the game that we spent our own money for. As said, it allows for an expedient and smooth launch process which I am completely 100% for. On another note: I like this idea except for one thing. You should be able to regain while standing/crouching/proning, etc. as long as you're either standing still or crawling (proned). Kind of reminds me of Diablo 2 except that you can walk and regain stamina in that game.

[Funny Video] I Believe I Can Fly in DayZ !!!

ROFL Leadz. You guys, lmao. We need a new rule for DayZ. Don't play while laughing. You break your everything.

Havent played in months- WTF is with the servers?

And a small number of us, small but here, have quit due to recent changes making the game unplayable for people with disabilities. The way the UI works now is very inconvenient for colorblind people, so my crew has moved onto greener pastures since 2 of the 5 of us are colorblind. We're hoping the standalone is more friendly to people with disabilities. I saw a thread about a partially deaf person having a hell of a time playing these days thanks to the cod kiddies, and lack of people to play with. In the meantime, I've gone back to other games my buddies and I played before DayZ since those games are more friendly to colorblind players. Waiting to see what comes of DayZ. Oh, and the fact that we can't host it on our Linux box doesn't help matters at all.
  5. Wow, the guy sure as heck didn't expect to be called out on his obvious bullshit, did he? Good for you, and even better for everyone else who deals with this buffoon. You should put this story on youtube or something so everyone can know about this scammer.

    DayZ Weapon/Trading Outpost!

I want to make a quick note about something in this post. The FN FAL AN/PVS-4 is NOT a thermal scope, but a night vision scope.

Things you shouldn't suggest? (Thread idea/game)

Bodily flatulence causing noise and zombie aggro after eating beans.

Things you shouldn't suggest? (Thread idea/game)

Spontaneous Human Combustion. Now I think I'll let this stew while I snooze. Look forward to the hilarity when I awake!

Oh, this sounds like fun. Random chance for weapon misfire!
  10. That really does make me feel better. I will relay it to my buddies, and hopefully the OP will find some solace in it as well.
  11. On a similar note, the deaf aren't the only people who have problems playing the game. I have a few colorblind friends, 2 of which played DayZ. With the removal of the debug system, they have both quit leaving me with only one person to play with, who was banned (for having a script on his computer without running it, supposedly. I'm not sure, I heard about it after the fact, and I reamed him about it) leaving me without any friends to play with. The lone wolf style in DayZ isn't anywhere near as much fun as cooperating with friends, even without resorting to banditry. There do need to be more visual cues in the game. For instance making the UI icons deplete instead of/in addition to subtly changing colors.
  12. I'm going to say this now, i'm not going to read through 25 pages of posts to see if this has been mentioned, and besides that, I severely doubt it has been based on the responses I got in another thread in which I mentioned this. The icons for blood, food, thirst, temp, etc. need to have some other visual indicator aside from subtle color changes. The reason behind this is simply that colorblindness is a rather common ailment. I actually play with two people who are colorblind, and in the new update they've quit because switching to the debug mode to be able to see what their health is at is extremely inconvenient for them. Therefore, I propose that in addition to chancing color from green to red (Which I might add, are extremely common colors that people are unable to see) that the icons fill and empty based on your levels of health, hunger, thirst, etc. This allows people that are colorblind to have a way to figure out where they stand before they start passing out randomly, or start sneezing.

    Debug screen glitch, help?

it's called a DEBUG monitor for a reason. Its purpose is to hep with debugging. Although I agree not being able to see your blood levels is bad if there's no color blind friendly way of seeing them

    PLEASE MAKE DAYZ FOR MAC

I'm amazed it hasn't been said yet, so I'll be the antagonist in this and start some shit up. Instead of them making DayZ compatible with a mac, why don't you get a real computer that uses windows so you can play games? Alright, shit talking aside, seriously, macs are not for gaming. That's a general rule. LOL I think he's smoking camel non-filters. :) Also report him so the mods get rid of it (and remove the link in your quote, hopefully).

Help me make our server more popular

The bandwidth for a private server I would imagine would be less than a normal hive, especially if the database and the server are in the same box (as is the case with a server I play on), seeing as how there's no data transfer from the server, across the country/world to the hive. Also provides damn near instant load times. I may simply be misinterpreting the way that works, however, as admittedly I don't know too much about servers and bandwidth and the like.

Help me make our server more popular

Are you running an outdated beta patch on the server? That could cause some issues with some people. Furthermore, lots of people have just moved onto private hives, lingor/takistan, etc. and aren't playing main hive as much (myself included, even though I'm from the states, and generally can't join UK servers to begin with).
  17. Depends on what private hive. I've been on a few

    Audio is Low

I've had this issue before. Mixer wasn't set low, everything was turned to normal values. I was just running through cherno, when suddenly I noticed I was no longer hearing my footsteps. Turning around I see 3 zombies chasing me, which I COULD NOT HEAR. I must say that was in my top 5 most terrifying dayz moments ever. Deafness in Cherno.
  19. lol, if you legitimately need medical help, I do have a blood bag on me. Unfortunately, someone raided my tent and my half dozen blood bags, morphine stash, etc. are gone, as well as, apparently, one of my mountain dews, which I must have mistakenly placed in the tent. Oops. Down to one. No, I'm not whitelisted as a medic, but I am whitelisted on the trader's list, if that makes any difference to you, lol.

some ideas to make the game harder in PvE

I disagree with two points here. Mainly the inability to hold all the tools, as there's quite a few solo players who either don't want to group or have had bad experiences with groups. Forcing people to play cooperatively is against the ethos of the mod, I believe. Also, on a more personal note, as I prefer playing at night, don't get rid of NVGs. They're fucking required to play at night if there's any cloud cover at all, or you can't see a damned thing. If you get rid of NVGs you have to shorten the cycle so that you aren't stuck on night for 8 hours or so, and they don't want to do that. Completely agree with the stamina thing, and the inventory system, aside from the fact that it makes it into micromanagement which is annoying in a game such as this, imo

    Stop flaming play-styles.

I agree with Angel in that regard. Fewer, yes. Gone? Not a chance.
  22. This was beautifully written, I must say. Beans for taking the time to write that out, as well as the simple fact that you didn't rage or flame :)
  23. As someone said on a playstyles thread, bandits aren't the problem. It's deathmatchers that ar the real bane of the mod at the present time. PVP isn't the issue as much as the mentality that you HAVE to shoot ANYONE you meet that you don't' know.

    Hackers are our friend

I won't lie... if I was freshly spawned with some buddies and we ran across one of these, i'd probably have us do what ashnik said, and just go apeshit on each other for shits and giggles for a while.

Ah, one of the two things I don't have. Satchel Charges, and Sandbags. lol.
