A reminder! Anyone with [FTC] or {FTC} tags in their actual name, IE visible from the lobby, does not have a valid tag! Valid tags are managed by squad.xml usage, so they do not appear from the lobby. The tag is also appended at the end of the player's name. Example: "Publik [FTC]" is valid, but only if it lists "Publik" on the player list. "{FTC} Publik" or "[FTC] Publik" is always invalid, and if the player list reads "Publik [FTC]", it is not valid.

Had a nice conversation with someone asking for tips about DayZ. Since I went ant typed this all out, figured I'd drop it here :) Any suggestions for a fresh newb who's just crawled his ass around and only found one loot pile? :P Let's see... Don't get attached to anything You will die Once you've accepted that you're going to die, that backpack doesn't mean much when you lose it Instead of "how long can I live?", ask yourself "how long can I stave off death". Stay away from Cherno and Elektro Stay away from people you don't know If you want good military grade loot, look for the deer stands (look along tree lines), fire stations (two stories, has a tower in the middle), and military looking green tents Stary Sobor (another town) has great military loot, but it's a rough place Airfields are also dangerous but give good military gear The Lee Enfield is extremely loud, so be careful with it If you're spotted by a zombie, get inside If you can, get out of town without alerting any more of them and dispatch the few that follow, as opposed to shooting in town where you attact all of them Know which buildings you can go into At first, the zombies will be a pain and will probably kill you Then, once you've figured the zombies out the players will be the real threat Once players aren't a threat to you, bugs and glitches will be If the bugs and glitches don't get you, you'll probably be offed by a hacker You're gonna die ;) Find an axe, matches, and a knife Then you can hunt animals, gut them, and cook the meat Meat > canned food Water bottles are better in the long run than soda There aren't any "better" weapons It's mostly preference You can fill water bottles back up Some towns without any loot have water pumps You can also fill up at ponds/lakes I'd rather have 5 empty bottles than a coke If you see someone heading south with really nice gear, they're probably up to no good If you find a person in a vehicle, watch out. They either have the skill, resources, or team to repair the thing, or they killed the previous owner Player tents that you find are usually empty (already looted by someone else), but sometimes you find some alright gear there Get used to the map; know landmarks like castles and mountains Though if you have a map and you can find landmarks, you can do the same thing [as using a compass] All of the stuff that goes in your utility slots (compass, map, tool box) is useful and should be collected NVG is overrated Rangefinders are golden Way better than either NVG or binocs Some people watch towns for 5 minutes minimum before entering. I just look for zombies If there are zombies in a town you're far away from, another player caused them to spawn Blue chemlights are the only ones worth using Green ones are really bright and red ones arent bright at all Blue ones give enough illumination and can only be seen from 30m away Green is something like 60m Red is I don't even know, but it doesn't light much up Flares are useless Well, useful but risky They're so bright and can be seen from forever away Play with friends If you crouch with a primary weapon out, lower it, look at your feet, and free-look (alt) straight up, you look like a turtle Most important one of all of them :D Crossbows are useless, ignore them bolts take up one slot each, no ironsights, slow You can sometimes retrieve them [bolts], but only if you hit and the zombie doesn't cover it up If you alt tab, hit esc first, because if you don't and don't alt tab back in, you'll shoot once Hitting esc brings up the menu, so when you come back nothing happens If something looks too good to be true, it probably is Avoid hacked items like the plague, and report hackers whenever possible Rocket bricks their copy of Arma and many lols are had Learn the sounds each weapon makes Basically, know what's supposed to be there and avoid what isn't Get a mic Map direct chat voip to something easy to reach (mine's space bar) VOIP goes out 80m before falling off, and text goes for 40m VOIP does taper off as distance increases, so you may need to shout Walk on grass, it makes you quieter Crouch walk near zombies or crawl Car parts take up a lot of space and aren't all that useful unless you're in the repair business When you sign in, your default movement speed is sprint Double tap shift to make the default walk Make your run button (double time) something other than double tap W Cause that triggers all the time And makes a ton of noise Mines ctrl + W, for example Be active on the forums Always patch yourself to the highest possible Especially the BIS beta patches for Arma 2 http://www.arma2.com/beta-patch.php/ or just google "arma 2 beta patch" Those update all the time, so you'd be good doing it once a day before you start playing Only attempt to trust people you can talk to Use TS3 or ventrilo or mumble or whatever floats your boat I've got all 3 just in case And skype, some people use skype On the topic of groups Do whatever is best for the group They'll watch your back For example, if you aggro a ton of zombies and don't have much important gear, don't bring the horde to your group It makes them waste ammo saving you Blood bags are great but they can only be used on another person (IE a friend) Don't swim Don't fucking swim Zombies can swim And they can climb ladders And they can open doors Sometimes they just walk through the walls (that's a bug though) Barbed wire is a dick tool Thing with barbed wire is that it only stops players If you see some by a building, someone's probably camping that building and hopping servers for loot Sandbags are more reasonable Sandbags I think actually stop zombies Tank traps are I don't even know. They just ruin vehicles

Probably. Also should have checked his Arma ID on the player list. But yeah, Max is the one that was recording, and most of us died today in a hacker attack anyways :P I don't say it's the same guy, but a one Mr. "Drew Temp" was online during the attack on Seattle 64. The server admin can attest the the attack taking place (he kinda died with us).
-
In other words, he wants to check the place our first. Stop drinking, you.

why is SVD > DMR? Better scope. The PSO scope has a built in manual range finder. Also, sexy gun has camo. Traded for one of these and found 100 rounds in a helo spawn ♥ Only problem is that it's a fucking antenna :/

So yeah, when you stand in fire you should probably start taking damage... Kind of a simple one to fix. Maybe exponential damage? So if you just step on the fire a little and jump off you take a little damage, but if you start cooking it really messes you up.

"Hey are you a friendly?"
Publik replied to nathanielflury@gmail.com's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Only twice I came across people that responded as friendly and I didn't take a bullet at the back of the head. Once a guy was friendly for 20 minutes. We were having a talk via mic e.t.c. and when I did the mistake to say I only had 5k blood due to a horde encounter' date=' he shot me while he was supposedly using a blood pack on me. [/quote'] Heh, helps when you've got 4 other buddies with you :P -
The only thing you're allowed to dupe is water and wood.

"Hey are you a friendly?"
Publik replied to nathanielflury@gmail.com's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Said "We're friendly" 3 times today and each time got a positive response. We all walked away from each encounter. -
Brief rundown of what happened at today's post, and what was learned: So, a few things: Sam and morpheus and that other hacker guy whose name I don't care to remember are on our shit list. No biggies. The hack will be banned eventually and the other two aren't really a threat. We're going to have to make sure that traders know the rules ahead of time. Basically, announce that you're coming into the area before you do. If you just barge through the door there's nothing we're gonna know about you, and we'll have to assume you're hostile.
-
I guess that depends... If we don't have any vehicles on '64 we can make a straight transition to '104, but if we do have vehicles we should go ahead and plan this run on '64.

(Another) Trading Post that might actually succeed?
Publik posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
THREAD MOVED HERETHREAD MOVED HERE The Goods: We'll do 3 things: -Facilitate trade between players -Sell/gather items (food, weapons, ammo, utilities) -Rent bodyguards Trading: http://i.imgur.com/Um3Yi.gif' alt='Um3Yi.gif'> Thank you oRidicule ♥ Selling goods: We gather weapons, ammo, food, water, utilities, etc. We put them in a distant location, like way up the coast in a hidden place, or we keep them on Skalisty in an off-limits area. If anyone spawns in the off-limits area, they are killed. Teams are dropped on the mainland by air or sea and go out to collect stuff. We then trade the items for whatever it is we need, mostly vehicle parts and fortifications (tents, wire, sandbags, tank traps). Renting bodyguards/mercenaries: If you like to kill, we can have you rented out for a percentage of the loot our employer finds. Be it security for an airfield run, guarding a vehicle, attacking another camp, whatever. The post will supply weapons/ammo for the merc teams, and we'll continue an operation until we succeed. If you die, we rearm you and send you back out. The Spot: I'm thinking Skalisty Island (SE corner). It's got a lot of cover from the mainland, and the SE side can't be seen from the coast. It has no hard fortifications to depend on, so the most damage a hacker can do is kill us all. It can't be reached without resources (read: boat or helicopter), so ghosting or server hopping is much harder to do. It requires boats and things to work, but I'm hopeful we can spend the time waiting on that update to gather the tents/fortifications/vehicles we need as well as being best friends and weeding out the people that would instead stab us in the back. Access to the Island: We can set up a mainland post to check players before letting them on the island. Once they're checked out, a boat is sent from Skalisty to pick them up and ferry them to the island. Once on the island, guards accompany the group to make sure no one becomes a threat. If we don't have enough guards to staff the place we don't run ferries. Snipers will be posted on the coast of the island and keep an eye on the boat when we send it out. Or... A mobile base could work too. Drop our stuff in the relative safety of the wilds, and drive into town with a few Urals to set up shop for a few hours. Rules for Clients: Primary out but down. If we can holster our sidearms in the future then that works too. If you raise your weapon you'll be warned. If you don't drop your weapon you'll be shot and your gear will be thrown in a tent and sold. If we are attacked: Clients are to get on the ground and not do anything. Anyone that is found afterwards that is dead but not confirmed as hostile will have their gear stored in a tent. You'll be allowed back on the island to take your gear or have it taken to you. The Server: We need a server. Rules are up for grabs, I really don't care what, as long as it's a 1.7+/beta server. Casual settings would be easy for us, but would also bring the casual griefers and so on. Hardcore is harder, but brings us players that really want to trade. All up to debate. So far, DE26 or Chicago 10. Communications: We've got offers for TS3 servers. Check the Steam group description. Communications with clients will be done through Direct. Leadership: If we ever have a leader they'll show up later down the line. I'm asking for like-minded individuals who want to work democratically. I don't want to impose duties like "gotta bring in X items/day or you're out!" or "gotta guard the island all day". Do what you want, we'll work out what the post turns into later. So yeah, if you're interested go ahead and join the Steam group. It's currently public (ha), and we'll work out how we want to go about it from there. If you don't use Steam for Arma2 (and I don't see why not, since you can link non-steam games anyways), we can work something else out. -
Anyone near Balota base want to drop me a morphine?

We could definitely use a safe place to put a main base/cache...

You are mistaken. Player data is stored on the DayZ main server. To wipe the server would be trivial and wouldn't require any new patching.

I saw a pic of a guy in Stary I think that was taking all of the items from the tents and making piles of gear that people could take. Would anyone be interested in setting up a supply depot at one of the barracks in NW? We'd need a bunch of people for security, probably all on a TS. We take all of the items from the barrack and surrounding buildings and make piles of gear on the strip, sorted into piles of food, medicals, weapons and ammo by type, utility gear, backpacks, etc. Light a bunch of fires, set up zombie detail, stuff like that. Probably set up on the northern barrack, and send groups to the southern one, hangars, fire station, and control tower. Maybe have a secondaries out only, or primaries down rule. Bandits could be welcome, though under escort from one of the security details. It's the kind of thing where if people all work together, there are enough supplies to make it worth leaving the operation alone and playing nicely. If we get enough people on board, we have enough people to defend the place. As long as no one kills anyone else, the operation can continue and people can just walk in and get some gear. If there's enough gear, getting into fights is pointless and risky. A group that could kill all of the people there for the gear could also just walk in and take what they wanted. Interest, thoughts? Thread it's from: http://dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=6528 All non-ID'd players must WALK, with their primary down or their secondary out. Non-ID'd players should ignore zombies, and allow security to mop them up. All items are put into piles inside a hangar (like the NW side hangars) to prevent dickbag snipers like TOCMasterK. Piles are sorted by item, and weapon piles are sorted by ammo type. Anyone is allowed to take whatever they want, but ID'd players get first dibs. Volunteers: Wears the yellow tactical glasses, carries chems for ID. Blue: Item runs Green: Security detail Red: Bandit escort Item Runs: Runs between the hangars, the fire station, the southern barrack, and the control tower. Takes all items, drops them in the Pit. Security Detail: Routinely patrols the area and clears out zombies. Some are posted on the watchtowers with rifles for additional security. Bandit Escort: Walks with players wearing the bandit skins. In charge of executing bandits that step out of line and attack other players.

*Sees beartrap* ... *Goes around* I don't see what all the fuss is about. Soon you'll have people bitching about how there are beartraps in the barracks :/

Pretty cool, but I wouldn't really trust some guy with the ability to send files to my PC :/ If you got Rocket to host it, it'd be pretty cool but not any different from any other auto-updater.

We're in talks about the website :) It'd be nice to have a little forum for us to communicate on and a public "looking for ___" and "selling ___" board.

What weapon was underwhelming to you?
Publik replied to Areos (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Crossbow M16A2 PDW I think the main problem with all 3 is the ironsights. The crossbow has none, the M16's is off, and the PDW's is shit. I actually like the M9SD, I think I'm on my 3rd or 4th one... Helps being that one guy with a silenced weapon that can take out zeds without the additional aggro. Edit: Adding double barrel and M1014 to the list. I prefer the M1014's sights to my Remmington, but it uses the same ammo, is louder, and doesn't have a flashlight. The double barrel takes up too much space for ammo and only has 2 shots before the reload. -
Sorry for not being around the past few days. Life prefers shitting on you all at once.

Rocket I love you: Going out of bounds - exploit or acceptable?
Publik posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
So yeah, on the topic of people going out of bounds (read: off the map in the empty area to the North and West). I hear and see a lot about people making tent cities and stashing everything off of the map. Is that an exploit or is it acceptable gameplay? -
:| What server?
