You'd shoot an unarmed player without a weapon or a backpack? For what? His mask?
-
All my beans. Maybe a rummaging sound instead of text so you could steal from people still, and the option to "unzip backback" on another player which plays an unzipping sound.

Batman kills me

^ This, until they add an equivalent option to the game. I looted a radio off a guy yesterday but it doesn't seem to do anything yet. Around the time the vanilla mod started to die FTC started experimenting with our own version including ACE and ACRE. If the radios aren't a copy of what ACRE can do or better we'll stick with TS.

Hopper: "Are you friendly?" Me: "Uh... Yeah, for the most part" Hopper came into NEAF right as we were hiking in (5 strong). We were probably going to cuff him and let him go later or try and recruit him, but he shot me in the face after he said he had put his gun down. Walks downstairs to collect and there are 4 guns waiting for him :/ It's interesting... There's no "good" outcome when attacking a group. If you risk the fight, you may kill the one guy you see and he may kill you, but there's no way to loot him without going through another 4 people. If you're outnumbered the best option is to continue communication and talk your way out of it, to hole up and tell them to go away politely, or to disconnect and run away. If you're outnumbering someone it's best to let the other party know that you aren't alone and aren't going to be an easy target. Also, check your buildings before you come in...

smaller suggestions and feedback based on the Alpha so far - let's make a continuous list
Publik replied to joe_mcentire's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Ability to raise/lower helmet visor for those cases were your face is covered. Some of the taller boots ought to have inventory slots for smaller knives you can use to break out of zipties (assuming they're in alongside cuffs) or as a hidden weapon, or hide other such little emergency tools. -
It's the foregrip with the 4(?) RIS rails on it, not the magpul one. It'll be black, whereas the magpul foregrip is a lighter gray. After you have that foregrip on your weapon you can attach the weapon light and/or bipod by dragging it over. Both the light and bipod need to be toggled from your inventory though like the headlamp. If beardedcap reads this and tries it he'll be just like those "veterans" with a fully modded M4 (whose mods do nothing and can be found after a quick jaunt through Balota).

Well, you can't tell when another person's magazine is empty. If you've got a gun and he's got a gun it's probably safer to shoot, even if he doesn't have any ammo.

Is it possible to carry both the M4 and the Mosin?
Publik replied to overdosed (DayZ)'s topic in New Player Discussion
Probably not a bug. You can carry one gun on your back and one melee. If you want to carry 2 guns you can carry one on your back and one in hand, but you'll have to drop the one in hand to switch. -
Turn your graphics settings down or off and start moving up from there. I found a nice balance with medium models/terrain/textures and not shadows or postprocessing.

smaller suggestions and feedback based on the Alpha so far - let's make a continuous list
Publik replied to joe_mcentire's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
The items nearby (vicinity) could be stretched out a little, and could rely on line-of-sight. A lot of times I'll see something I want and have to crouch and shimmy around just to get it in my vicinity, even though I can clearly see it poking out from below the bed. If the current check is just distance to center of mass, it could be changed from a spherical check to a cylinder or capsule check. The right click options window for items in your inventory often says "receiving" or something along those lines before populating the options list. I think that's the server validating my options, but it's slow. Melee weapons are definitely too weak, the fire axe being the exception. The hotbar isn't very responsive sometimes, and it's annoying to have to stop moving to take something into your hands. This especially for tools like the compass, which you can just bring up whenever you need it in the mod. When we start taking fire, it was useful before to be able to call out the bearing. Now if we wanted to do that one of us would have to step out of the fight to switch to their compass, which could take 2-4 seconds to actually respond effectively. It would be cool if depending on where the item was in your outfit it took a different amount of time/had different requirements to take in hand, for example stuff in your shirt or pants being a short animation without stopping you (~1s), items in your pack taking a long time and making you stop (~2s), and items in a vest or holster taking a very short amount of time to ready (~0.5s). This could extend to weapons, for example being able to pull a knife from your vest quickly without much motion to jump your capturer and escape, or being able to ready a rifle or draw a handgun faster when you have the holsters for them. When you open cans of food it likes to place the opened can in the first available slot moving down from the top of your inventory instead of leaving it in the slot it was in, so it looks like the item disappears until you find it. It ought to stay where it was when opened. Moving large items in your pack ontop of smaller items should move all of the affected smaller items to the slots used by the large item. For example, if you move a water bottle (2 vertical slots) on top of a can opener and some beans (2x single slots stacked vertically), it should move both the single slot items to the 2 slots vacated by the bottle. I believe it only moves a single item right now. This is kind of preference, and it would be cool if it was a user setting. When you put on a new pair of pants or whatever, it'd be nice to have the items carry over from the old pants to the new ones. If this is currently intentional, you might be able to select the entire contents and have to play an animation or something. For example, switching the contents of one pack to another by dragging the entire inventory of the one on the ground into the one on your back (the new one). Something of a "take all" button. Maybe this could be specific to packs, with a "take all into pack" button. You can pick up a portable stove when it's on and when the pot is on top of it. It moves as one object. There are a TON of corpses along the coast, but none of them are zombies. Zombie corpses should stay around for a few hours. We were in Zelenogorsk or around there and we heard suppressed M4 fire and had to pull out of town. We never found the guy, but if there were a lot of zombies around we could've spotted the zombies he was killing and maybe tracked him. Balota is the only thing to see on the southern coast and has become it's own NWAF. I don't believe there's a way to turn off head bobbing anymore? I played with it off because it makes me a bit sick. Once that's changed I can play in first person again. Nevermind Also, there's a small pop in the footstep on dirt audio (or one of the ones that plays when you're in the woods) that sounds a lot like a small calibre gunshot at a distance. The first time I noticed it I thought there were shots being fired nearby until I noticed that the shots were only fired when I was moving. You'd probably never notice it in a standard FPS but in DayZ you're generally a lot more immersed and the little pops and snaps become very noticeable when you're alone in the woods. -
[FTC] Trade and Supply - [T] Standalone Shop Open! 100% satisfaction!

Will standalone use the same kind of code as the mod? I assume the scripts will be rather similar... If so, if you take a look at the weighted loot spawning code it's really inefficient. Like, trying to clean a fish with a brick inefficient. If it's using the same code I have a cleaner version I wrote for the now-defunct Freeside Coalition Edition we were working on at the end of the summer. It's cleaner, can be scaled much farther than the previous one, and is bounds more accurate. For a list of items I with weights W, the current algorithm needs to allocate a new array of size Σ(Ii * Round(Wi * 100)) where W is a double or float between 0.0 - 1.0, to then traverse and populate every time it wants to pick a new loot item. The version I've got doesn't need to allocate an array at all. It needs an int, long, or float and the original array of weights and that's it. The old version can only support weights of 0.00 - 1.00 (2 decimal places, or only 100 possible weights). The version I've got doesn't care what the weights are. They could be doubles or ints or longs and nothing would change. Could I send this in somewhere or what? Even if standalone isn't using the same language, if it's using the same method it'll still be clunky.

A not-announcement announcement for the forums!
Publik replied to rocket's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
Well, I did respect Rocket at one point. That was in the early summer. I thought "now here's a guy who knows what's up!". Then the hackers really started to hit and instead of empowering server owners to police their own servers, they were told to submit a cheat report and pray to the Lord Rocket that the hackers would be banned. Take matters into your own hands and you risked being blacklisted. I used to think that the guy that trolololed and claimed to be fueled by my tears was a cool dude that deserved my praise, now all I see is a developer trampling the good-will of his community. Alas, I'm no longer a fanboy - I haven't been one for months. As a non-fanboy, I find it pathetic the way DayZ is currently being handled. Rocket is not Notch and doesn't deserve to be treated like him. Then I'll reword my statement: Bohemia can get one of their guys to write up what's going on for SA. I'm sure an established company can spare one intern to write up the reports. Mods are off topic. Wonder if they'll moderate themselves? Nvm :P -

Publik replied to rocket's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
He posted, but he didn't post any information. He "doesn't want to get into it". I'm sure he can dedicate one of his "thousands" of people "working" on SA to update the community on where things stand. It's a rather shitty way to treat your community, this. -

Publik replied to rocket's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
No, Rocket, why don't we get into that? I'd have more respect for you/not lose any more if you told us exactly where development is, since you know, we've been sitting around waiting (in a lot of cases) since the end of summer. I'd personally like to get into that, in gory detail. Where have you failed, what have you done, and where are you at. What is left for the initial build? Where's the new projected (flexible) release date? And don't go making another post bitching about how you're "depressed" or "don't know if you want to be in the industry anymore". If you want to back out, go. Git. Pass the torch to someone who has the guts face their customers and bring this game to release. -
It's been a while. Freeside Trading Co. was alive pretty much the entire summer and then died, not because the idea we had was unsound, but because of hackers, real life, and the end of active development on the mod. I'm not going to complain about any of that. I just wanted to put it out there that once standalone rolls around, I'll be looking to put Freeside (or something similar) back together. For those of you unfamiliar with what we did, we were a group of guys that did trading. Every weekend for a good few months, we ran an open trading event where we'd fortify a location and let people in to trade. You can read an article written about us here and find youtube videos if you're intent on it. It'd be cool if anyone interested wants to shoot me an email at jeff.publikdomain@gmail.com. If there's interest, we can shoot for a meeting on Friday. Cheers, Publik

The silence just breaks my heart. A "today we tried making zombie crows and it was lulzy" once or twice a week would go miles; even bad news is better than no news.

Event: Freeside Trading Co. Open Trading - 7/20 - 7/22
Publik posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
7/22 Event Cancelled Reason: Rebuilding after yesterday Time zone converter: http://www.timeandda.../converter.html Freeside Trading Co. will be hosting our weekly open trading event. We'll be exchanging weapons and ammo on-site. When: 7/21 - 7/22, 20:30 UTC - 24:00 UTC or later (we'll be wrapping up, though) Where: Green Mountain, Freeside 2 TS3 Server: 79.161.200.234:9117 - We are on a secure channel, drop down to DayZ/Group 1 and message Vulwulf if you need anything. Rules: Approach the compound from the road at a walk. Enter through the front gatehouse after announcing yourself over VOIP and chat. Do not sign in or out at the compound (do so at the treeline). When inside, lower your weapon (primary out but down). The guards will direct you to the trading location. Specific items available by request, but please be patient while we grab the gear. Note: SixUpdater hates the server, so if you can't find it, launch DayZ by joining a random server, then disconnect and filter for "Freeside" in the Arma 2 server browser. Please do not arrive early. Bump it if you like it, we need the exposure. -
It isn't some bandit DMR with 19 shots in reserve when they miss the first time, and it's not one of the 50 cals bandits are so fixated on nowadays. It deals the same damage as a DMR, so you get the knockout first shot, and it can be zeroed. I'd go so far as to say that the M24 is the most gentlemanly rifle in stock DayZ. The CZ550 comes in a close second, but the M24 is more practical with the nicer scope and since it can combine ammo for storage. Thoughts?

What do you call a 'bandit'? You know, the kind that 'owns' streamers, and shoots bambis on the coast... I'm not talking about an honorable bandit, I mean the shitty kind that most would refer to as a CoD kiddie?

Not sure if serious?

I'm in the market for tents and PDW mags. I found a 6-pack of NVGs at the store the other day, but I've already drank 3 of em, so I can only offer half of the pack.

I didn't notice that...
