Hardcore hive... a solution to the division?

Right, so clean up your own mess :P If you're a messy killer you should have to deal with the corpses that pile up. Edit: Somehow the discussion has gone off track. Talk about Hide Body here.

Fix (not remove) Third Person Perspective

Max has the most fun job in the world. Once we get shit (flying), we can re-enact the founding of the forums ingame. I'll be Benjamin Flingshit. On topic: I can't stress how disappoint I am at this kind of talk from the Devs. Just taking a broken feature and hiding it isn't a solution. It's just avoiding the issue. He mentions Hide Body as well in his "Upcoming Features" post being disabled on a "hardcore" hive along with 3PP:OFF, and with that and such inaccurate weaponry to prevent long range combat, I get discouraged. Why have hardcore servers when the entire game is supposed to be hard? What happened to the feed-me-your-tears Rocket I liked the first few months the mod was out? Did something freeze and fall off when he was climbing Everest? Every day that goes by I get less and less enthusiastic about SA, and not because there's zip to do, but because I don't forsee SA shaping up to be what it could be. I'm not getting those kinds of signals from the devs. Maybe it's because they seem to prefer Reddit and Twitter instead of their own forums that I feel uninformed. Shouldn't these forums be the first place they have a discussion? Maybe that's why the forum community feels like a bunch of shitposters and trolls? I need to go to bed. That's 4 months old though. I'd think that in 4 months he'd have had the time to look at a few mods and decide his course of action on this. The latest word is separate hives. Separate hives are no fix, they're sweeping the problem under the rug and pretending they don't exist. Head bob is still there. It's much better, but it's still a little bit annoying even at the lowest settings. In the video you can see the difference at 0:20-0:25 or so. When he goes into 1PP he can see about half as much; look at the bit of grass and you'll get the idea. If you take your hands and put them next to your eyes like blinds on a horse, and open them out to the sides, you can see what kind of FOV your real eyes have. Its about 135 degrees for me, and people can turn their eyes as well which brings it around 180 degrees. My 1PP FOV is somewhere around 90, and I believe it goes as low as 60 degrees. Third person about doubles that, which brings it closer to what you can actually do. People also have extra senses that aren't represented in-game, like more acute hearing and smell, and people can move their heads/bodies in ways that they can't with just 1PP. I can twist my torso along with my head to get a view of whatever is directly behind me. They just need to tweak where the camera is: closer and lower, so you can't get it over walls and such. Removing the feature all together is a little extreme and doesn't set a good precedent. What else is going to be deemed "hardcore only"? Accurate guns? For the record, whatever ends up being the hardest will probably be where Freeside sets up shop. If that means no service for most people, I guess that's just a bullet we'll have to bite.

    Replacement for "Hide Body" option

They'd probably need to make sure it's on dirt lol. They can tell that in code somewhere, since vehicles behave differently on dirt and you make different footstep sounds. As for zombies eating the corpse, I'm not really sure if they're that kind of zombie. Even if they would eat the corpse, who cares if people accept it or not? If zombies try to eat the body, let em. Just means if you kill someone you better be quick about looting their corpse lest the zombies get there first.

Hardcore hive... a solution to the division?

Argument could be spun the other way as well. People that do want Hide Body as it is just want an easy way to spite their victims, and just want it to be less of a hassle to camp their favorite sniping spot because people can't notice the danger if there aren't any signs of battle.

Hardcore hive... a solution to the division?

I'm against the idea of separate hives, unless there's a way to easily switch characters, maybe once/day or something. On the topic of "no hide body" I don't see why they can't just take Hide Body and make it deeper. If you want to hide a body, you have to drag it somewhere out of sight and let it decay, or dig a shallow grave with a shovel and bury it. Same thing with 3PP; for those that don't want to commit to a lifetime of first-person, they'd still be stuck with a broken and easily abused perspective. The problem with making a separate hive is that it doesn't solve any of the problems, it just hides them in the corner. It's a pretty lazy response. Isn't DayZ supposed to be an antigame? Isn't it supposed to be hard? If they're considering a "hardcore" gametype, could they just call that the default and let people that want an easy time play on the pussy hive?

Could DayZ be done better on a different engine?

    Well fuck me, repost

Could DayZ be done better on a different engine?

Here's the map in Unity: Could be sped up by separating the terrain into 1km^2 chunks and loading the items in as you need em. Also doesn't have buildings or anything, but I haven't got that far yet (working with mecanim to get a nice animation system). The answer is mostly this: But then again Arma is buggy in its own ways and I see no reason to defend it.

    Bounty Hunt

There's nothing stopping you from creating your own bounty system. Go for it, but it won't ever be a system done for you.

So why do people refuse being held up?

It's more because A. people don't want to get force fed bleach and B. people have nothing to lose by dying. Even with stuff to lose (like that healthy status you spent hours eating shit for), there are too many stories of people being fed bleach or rotten fruit or just killed once cuffed. If you get cuffed, you just give your assailants unbroken gear and a new pinata, so why make it easy for em? Fight a little and make em ruin your gear in the process, and maybe you kill one of them while you're at it.

    Zombie Observations

I was going to run around today and collect a zombie train to see what a horde looks like. Short answer, you can't. Or more, they're too stupid for it to matter. I did notice a few things though once I had about 9 of them in a pack: 1. Zombies very quickly stop sprinting and revert to a slower jog, whereas players can run indefinitely. 2. Zombies can hit other zombies, and will do that frequently in large packs. What's probably happening is that they're doing their lunge/jump attack to hit the player they're chasing, but are too far out to connect, which makes them hit whatever zombies is in front of them. 3. Zombies don't bleed continuously, although they will bleed for a second when hit. 4. Zombies are using a follow behaviour, not a pursuit behaviour. 5. Zombies do not have any sort of flocking behaviour, specifically avoidance. They will stack up with other zombies when packed together. Basically, the zombies are fucking stupid. They're not doing anything other than setting their navigation target to the player's position, and playing an attack when they're close enough. There was a game jam in November or December I participated in. The AI we used for our enemies was basically the same; IE 48hr quality AI. You can solve each of these in the following ways: 1. Zombies use the same health system as players, but always have enough food and water to be healthy. This includes the same stamina system, meaning a zombie can always keep up with the player. 2. The lunge attack should take into account player velocity and the direction the player is moving relative to the zombie. 3. See 1, zombies can bleed if hit and can die that way. 4. Change to a pursuit behaviour, where the zombie tries to go to where it thinks the player will be in the next N seconds. 5. Apply some sort of avoidance behaviour so they don't try and stand where other zombies are, or account for other zombies when they navigate.

    Zombie Observations

Yeah, you can tell when the agents update their paths. They could probably ditch pathfinding altogether when the zombies are close to the player, and once line of sight is broken they can queue for a repath. My guess with the pathfinding is that whatever they're using isn't baked yet since they're still working on the map. I'm not really sure what Arma uses for pathfinding, but if it's a navmesh or some sort of A* grid they'd probably need to bake the entire map before it works. It'd be wonderful if they could start sending the updated navigation with each patch instead of just leaving it for later.
  12. Played the first time in a while tonight. Met up with some of FTC who were luckily also in NEAF. Ran into a guy, gave him some food and water, Turbo got shot but they weren't shitty people and bandaged him up. We met up with them to collect Turbo and the server restarted, killing me. I made my way up to Berezino to regroup, and by the time I had got there Turbo and Juicebox had killed each other and Detoxx had left. I found some pants finally, and then some fucker (who was very unprofessional) shot me. I think he was camping the water pump behind the hospital. He made off with some ruined pants and about 20 fewer 5.56. Seriously, I know the guns are inaccurate but a still target at 30ft should not require automatic fire. I respawned at Elektro and collected some general gear, then slipped and fell 10 feet to my death. #DayZSA Edit: But to answer OP, nothing. I don't play DayZ but once a week because there's nothing to do.

Base Building - What would you like to see?

I'd like at the very least a sheet metal wall and some sort of storage. That can't be too much to ask, can it?

Special Player Skins For Alpha Participants.

A special item would be cool actually. Some sort of special can opener that doesn't appear in the loot tables and you only get one the first time you spawn. Forum would be filled with "can I get another can opener? I tripped and died and lost it".

3rd person suggestion, not my idea)

Because it just takes the issue and hides it in the corner.

    Handcuff Zombies

Can we handcuff zombies? Maybe you can lead them with a rope and use them like guard dogs?

    Single Player

I just want single player so I can use the Armory and test out stuff, like helicopters. It'd suck if they used something like ToH but you had no way to practice outside of the real thing.

    Grenades/Item Throwing

I was going to just suggest smoke grenades, but then I remembered the horrible throwing system we've got. There's nothing to throw in SA yet, so I don't know if it's been updated, but there's a reason why FTC employees were banned from carrying grenades in the mod. Grenades: FragSmokeFlashbangConcussionOther: RocksCans of foodKnives/hatchetsMagazinesEverything elseHalfway through writing that list, I thought "oh hey, it'd be cool to be able to throw cans of food at/to people. You could throw magazines to your buddies in a firefight too... You could throw anything. Can we please throw everything? It'd also be cool if you could catch items that are thrown to you, for example we're running through the forest in a hurry and someone forgot to hydrate. You could pull out a canteen and toss it to them without stopping to drop loot and all that. Or, if you're in a firefight and Juice runs out of ammo you could toss him a mag without having to run over and fumble around.
  19. See title, it'd be cool if when you pick up an item with F it doesn't automatically go to your hotbar. It would also be cool to be able to set the order your equipment is in for picking up items, for example if I want all the items I pick up to go to my backpack, or to be able to toggle each inventory you have for the items that are automatically added. Example: Order inventory items: drag the clothing/inventory item up/down on the right side of your inventory screen and it changes the order (so you could have your pack up top). Toggle fill: each inventory item has a set of toggles, for example Food, Ammo, etc. If Food is disabled for your vest, when you pick up spaghetti with F it will ignore your vest inventory unless all others are full. That way when you pick up a magazine it goes in your vest then backpack, if you pick up a can of food it goes straight to your pack, or whatever you want.
  20. We'll probably be using Rify and basically the same procedure. At current, the process is as follows: Player approaches weapon holstered from Berezino and is let in by the guardsBouncer/doorman reads the player the house rules and searches them for contraband (grenades, etc) that could kill people en masse. The bouncer has a "word of the day" they tell entering players so returning customers can skip the rules and be searched immediately.Player is brought in to the rest of the traders in one of the holdsPlayer can ask a FTC sales rep to oversee a trade with another player, ask about prices or appraisals, and purchase items. A runner fetches the item in house trades and takes the payment. When the player is done, they are led out by a guard and given any confiscated goodsPlayer exits in a specified direction, either north or westWe need a bouncer, a sales rep or two, and a runner. We'll probably have CQF provide our guards, so FTC will be able to put on events with as few as 3 members, add 7 guards if we don't have CQF, and an extra 4 guards to secure the second half of the ship (which is optional).

  22. Why not just bump the creator's post instead of reposting his work?
  23. We'll have these values on our website somewhere once we get into the swing of things, but like I said that time is possibly a ways off. As for the ammo, you'd still need some common value to value them against. Or, at the very least we will, whether it's beans or banknotes :P And that's where we come in. Sure, we'll have stuff for sale, but our main goal is facilitating trade between other parties.
  24. Or to put what I meant differently, FTC will likely use banknotes as our unit of currency. For example, a soda might be worth 1 banknote. If you want to buy a pair of pants that are worth 5 banknotes, we'll accept anything that totals 5 banknotes in value. If it's a trade between two other parties, we'll be there to offer our price for the items sort of as a price checker, and we'll charge a few banknotes worth of stuff from either party as a transaction fee. I think what I'd rather see is the ability to print our own banknotes. I might have $75 FSD and $25 CQD, each of which are valued differently.
  25. Money is fine. It's that or use bullets, which have their own use.
