Hunger especially is the main thing I always worry about when playing the game as I seem to always come by drinks more common then food. Ah well just a pack of matches away from being able to kill and cook animals for food.

Keep in mind this game is in alpha, and it's still in alpha for a reason. If you want to play a bug free DayZ I suggest waiting for the official release when the game is out of beta.

This isn't your everyday shooter, the point is challenge. I spent an hour searching for my first weapon and that was a hatchet I didn't find another weapon for a few days, but the more buildings you search the better idea you have of what different areas will provide. If you want an action packed game full of constant gun fights this isn't the game for you.

Off and on for the past week or two, I've only encountered a small amount of players and only a couple of them were capable of pointing a gun at me.

I think your character might have Parkinson's Disease.

I've yet to die in DayZ, all I had to do at the start was be sure to crawl through towns making sure to remain as invisible to zombies as possible until I found a hatchet to defend myself with. I did watch a few video guides and browse through DayZ wiki to get the basics of inventory and healing down and I've been more or less set.

Well an unarmed player might be walking around unarmed to look harmless. I've seen some people pull out guns and shoot people when their backs are turned. Honestly most I'll do in a situation like that is to tell them to keep their distance or I'll shoot them.

Think what is happening on the server also factors into it, lots of big vehicles all on one server might slow and lag it out a bit causing the server to save your character's stats less regularly.

I've been playing DayZ for a while now on solo because all my friends who have the game have been busy lately but I've been able to manage by myself. Only trouble is getting started as you won't have anybody to protect you or watch your back. However when you do find say a hatchet you can become very self sufficient and can search for more supplies. You may also encounter other friendly players that you might wanna work with, but keep in mind they're very capable of stabbing you in the back at any moment.

I honestly don't see the point in friendly fire, zeds are hardly much of a hazard to your health and wouldn't see much challenge or fun in the game if it were otherwise.

Paranoia, you don't know what that stranger is really carrying and what their intentions are so people prefer to shoot first and ask questions later. The chance of strays that might be carrying something worth collecting is a bit of a bonus to them.

I suggest you be fearful for anything and everything that moves.

Are you sure you're playing on regular rather then veteran servers? I started playing this game just recently but haven't died yet and just crawled through towns until I found a hatchet to defend myself with against zeds so I could find more supplies in more populated areas.
