... now what? LOL I'm pretty sure what I am supposed to do with it is find a (hopefully) out of the way place where no one will find it, and stow extra food, etc. in it? Does it only stay on that server?

Oh is that what the hive/non-hive thing means in the server list? I did not know that and I did not know the gear didn't transfer. Good to know, thanks! :) -

I imagine if this ever becomes a standalone game, there will be non-pvp servers, where you cannot target/hurt other players. However, then they'd have to make it so you couldn't save your character from server to server, because you'd have people gearing up in the relative safety of non-pvp servers and then logging off on top of the firehouse in Cherno, only to re-log onto a PvP server in the same place and raise hell lol. If they started doing all of that, though... can you imagine how complicated it would get? O_o -

I've been there and done that, and yes it sucks. :( Especially if you're like me and basically just want to explore and avoid zombies. I would get so angry... because I'd be in a new area, having a great time finding things I'd never seen before (Ooooo civilian clothes!) and next thing I knew, I'd hear the zing of gunshots and then I'd roll over dead. UGH! But... I started to look at it this way. Even if you die, you can still come back and explore some more. All you really need for several hours' good exploration is a hatchet to kill zombies that are attacking you, and those are everywhere. You can find enough food and canned soda along the way to survive without starving or thirsting to death while you explore. I have no desire to become a geared-out-the-yang sniper. My husband might, if he ever plays... but that's not my style at all. I like exploring and finding new things. If I'm ever able to have a hatchet, knife, canteen, and matches all at the same time (are you listening RNG gods??) then I'll try to see how long I can live off the land... but you know, I think that might get a bit boring. The fun in this game for me is the getting from Point A to Point B with that element of constant danger. The hostile players just add another aspect of danger. That said, if you really are wanting to do a good bit of undisturbed exploration, choose a server with low population (like 2/40 or something like that) and play on it. If you arrive at night (a lot of low-pop servers are low-pop because it's night) then crank up your gamma and brightness... that helps me see enough to get around. A lot of people don't like to use the gamma/brightness because it ruins the nighttime effect (it really does) but I figure if you're new it's forgivable. Plenty of time later to try to explore in full dark. It's worth seeing, too... the full dark is creepily beautiful, especially if there's a fire somewhere or someone tosses a road flare. At any rate, just know that nothing you've obtained thus far is irreplacable. And you may respawn in an area you've never seen before and/or have really good luck finding things right away (well... as long as you don't spawn in the barren hell that is Kamenka lol.) Spawn in, get your bearings, crawl around until you find a hatchet, and go from there. Oh, and the hatchets, you have to right click on them and choose "remove from toolbelt" to make then an armed weapon. Also you have to reload them (just hit the letter R) the first time you do this. After that, hack and slash away! :D -

Last time I was in Cherno it was on fire and at night, and people were shooting everywhere... I was a fairly recent spawn so I had nothing to lose and I ran around quite a bit before I heard gunshots and fell. There were lots of zombies around so I could have died to friendly fire just as easily as someone doing it on purpose. It was really quite beautiful at night all lit up by fire. Drat my SnagIt program not working for me with this game... I would have loved to have gotten some screenshots!

What to do then low health and good gear?
cindyanne1 replied to Orpheus (DayZ)'s topic in New Player Discussion
The first few times I lived more than 20 minutes in real time and actually had "stuff" I was upset when I would die and lose it all... but then I started thinking, the only thing that I really need to explore and poke around is a hatchet (to kill zombies with and protect myself) and you find them lying everywhere. Once I have one of those, I'm off and running and ready to live a new life. -
I was just wondering this myself... I have a little notepad with server numbers on it that I've been on, and it seems I can't ever find the same ones again. I know it's not a huge deal unless you have friends you're trying to meet up with, but it seemed like an unnecessary amount of busywork to try and read the entire server list every time. It's kind of backward from World of Warcraft, isn't it? There you make new characters on a server. With this you get new servers for your character, lol.

Idk, something is odd with the graphics in this game anyway... I have a computer that ought to have zero trouble with the graphics, and I will occasionally get the "shattered glass" effect when I turn my mouse. If it gets really bad I will log out and back in on another server and that usually fixes it. FRAPS does make things run a bit slower, but I've had issues in this game both with and without FRAPS being on.

I was wondering about tents myself. I hadn't seen any but then I came across two of them, set up in different places. I could loot them (there was nothing in them) but I couldn't take them, and I figured they "belonged" to someone else. Are the tents you can take with you folded up when you find them or something? Are they in a bag or something?

Yeah I played a female model until I found a set of civilian clothes and couldn't use them. :(

The Truth - A Guide to Surviving Hackers

Hahahaha... this is me as well. I always think to myself, "Why do they want to waste their skills on lil' old me?" XD -
You are some great people, and so much fun to play with. :) Probably the most fun I've had in this game yet... such a bummer that my game became unresponsive and then I couldn't find the server again to log back in (right when you all had found me a great weapon too!), but I hope to see you again in-game sometime! Keep fighting the good fight! Cindy (aka Gum)

That is amazing! So many great pictures in this thread, you guys are awesome!

Ugh, I'm so frustrated. I was having my best game ever last night... I'd made it to a big city (Chernogorsk) with all my health intact. I had two cans of food, a water bottle (!!!) matches (!!!!) a watch (!!!!!!!) and a hatchet. I was having a GREAT time exploring the city and seeing what all was there. (Omg there's a vending machine that still lights up, wtf?) Then, out of nowhere, no less than three other players wearing what looked like riot gear zerged me and gunned me down as I crawled through an alleyway. And just like that... game over. No warning at all. Surely I wasn't a threat. It wasn't like I was advancing on them with a sniper rifle. Surely, being players of the game themselves, they could tell exactly what I was. I didn't have anything worth taking, and I couldn't fight back. I just don't get it. :(

Kind of a noob question, but I am a noob, so... lol Anyway, I've read a few discussions that talk about "zeds" in this game, which I thought was a slang term for zombies until I saw them both used together, lol. I'm assuming one is the mob in wearing all black, and the other is the ones with the white shirts? Are there any other differences?
-
Is there ever a way to open them? I've tried chopping them with my hatchet; no luck. So are there things you can find (bombs, etc.) that would make you able to blow them open? Are just some doors un-openable? I've found plenty of doors that I can open, so it's not that I'm not opening the doors at all... but there are so many doors that just seem to be sealed shut and I never get the option or the icon to open them. Also, wtf pumpkins? Sorry but if I was starving in a zombie-ridden apocolyptic world and I found some pumpkins, I'd be eating me some pumpkins! Kind of silly to have them in the game just as decoration... or are they just decoration? Am I missing something with the pumpkins? And what the crap is with that axe stuck in a stump that you can't pick up? And why can't we hack off a piece of meat with our hatchet? Again, starving... I kill me a pig with an axe, Imma gonna be chopping me off a piece of pig with that axe and throwing it on the fire. Grr... lol!

I hear you. I don't simply want to survive in this game... for me it's the exploration that is fun. I was like that with WoW and with Diablo too... well, with any open-world game, really. I like going places I've never been and seeing what's there. I won't rest until I've seen all of Cherno and especially the inside of the hospital at least once. Then I'll target another area and keep trying to explore all of it. Bit by painstaking bit. :) I get really irritated at other players killing me when all I want to do is explore the map. But... you know... they don't know that's what my goal is and they probably don't care either. :\
-
I have! I giggle at the outhouses and how the doors open and stuff... but I find good stuff in there sometimes! Once there was a crossbow lying right on the toilet. And in my ill-fated expedition to Cherno I found a bathroom in a restaurant, which is where I found the watch and accidentally set off a road flare. O_O Since it was at night it was very pretty, but holy poop! I was sure every zombie in the world would come rushing toward me haha!
-
Yeah I think if I do roll again I'll make it a point to stay away from cities vs. trying to make it to them. Always before I had the mindset of once I get to a city I'll be okay. O_o
-
I've given myself a broken bone by trying to pick up an item too close to a doorway and accidentally closing the door on myself. O_o It's very strange... there's also been times I swear I've crawled over sharp rocks and died, but I can't confirm it wasn't a sniper or some such, which it could have been. Zombies have a hard time staying with you if you run into the ocean, but swimming for too long will make you cold, so use with caution. I'm feeling pretty good about the game I have going right now... I actually made it to Chernogorsk with my full health intact, and I have a hatchet and a can of Pepsi! Hey, it's the little things... lol.

I think this was perhaps the 3rd time I'd logged in. Sorry the video is so jumpy; I'm not sure why it did that... it's not like that on my comptuer. :\ BTW: what *do* those icons mean? O_o

I was wondering if that was something that was normal or if it was someone who had found an exploit. Yikes!

I still haven't figured out how to talk to people in -game. :( -
My BP is at 4033, and my character is passed out. Trouble is, he's been passed out for hours. He won't wake up, and nothing is coming along to finish killing him. I've control-alt-deleted and restarted the game several times; even restarted with a new player profile... but I respawn in the same place with the same predicament because I didn't actually die. What do? :(
