Aim the reticle slightly above the zombies head when going for the kill. Don't run - WALK - into range (about five meters). Don't spam left-click like your playing Diablo 1, melee weapons have a slow "rate of fire," take your time to aim then backpedal if you miss/don't land the headshot. If you're fighting infected out in the open, facepalm. Run into a building & always have an exit strat. Getting infected has no correlation to the effectiveness of melee weapons, in fact they're probably the best way to deal with zeds as you won't attract any more like you would firing a gun, or give away your position to players in the vicinity. Too bad about your 150-day+ survivor, sounds to me like a sloppy 1.7.6.1 playstyle that got you killed though mate.

So I was playing on a night server for a change & noticed that I could not pick up my thrown chemlights. At first I thought it was because I was in a building, but no. Went outside on the grass, tried them on a road, tried reloading my guns, dropping the stack again, putting them in my backpack & taking them out again etc etc. No matter what I do, the menu option does not appear when I scroll over the glowstick. On a positive note, Cherno looks like a discotheque after I burned through about four stacks around town. Has anyone else experienced this with the latest patch? Suggestions?
-
Bet you still buy it when it's released.
-
They're worth zip mate, better read the latest patch notes.

There's just one question I'd like to ask, as this discussion seems to focus heavily on high-capacity magazines. Where are you planning on finding all this ammo? Bullets will be rare, as well as the magazine they belong in. I like the idea of hand-loading each round, and if ammo isn't in abundance like it is currently in the mod, you should have no trouble in keeping track of the ten rounds you possess.
-
Yes, that is a reason, but it's not THE reason. You're generalising. The "safest" way to play may be to hide in a bush up north with a knife and matches, only coming out to plug a fresh goat & see nobody. I personally wouldn't play like that though because it's boring as bat-shit. Equally boring to me is the other extreme, where everyone just shoots everyone because "if he's dead, that means I'm alive!" Sounds mind-numbing. Different people KOS for different reasons - gear & life expectancy may have nothing to do with it. There's an infinite spectrum of situations where killing players is not going to net you quick lewts, or increase the time you live.
-
I don't see the need to change this aspect of the mod. There are two speeds for each stance, and three stances, not counting the prone barrel-roll. Each one has a different sound rating and I believe time of day does not change this rating. If you plan on crossing concreted areas or roads, it should be up to you to choose the best stance/speed for the situation, rather than change the whole mod for everybody to suit your style. If you want to get technical with the "realism" call, you can even experiment at home! Crouch run for a couple of hundred meters, then cross your street in the same stance and let us know how loud your steps are. Guarantee your feet will be slapping the asphalt because your legs WILL be tired.

Personally, I think it boils down to a lack of imagination. This is not a linear game with missions or pre-determined plot development. To understand the appeal of KOS is to have played the game literally to death, and to have seemingly exhausted all goals one could possibly set for themselves, either as a solo survivor or as part of a group. Some players choose to KOS from day one, others with the best intentions are betrayed & feel vulnerable instigating contact after a few encounters go pear-shaped. Could be killed just for your pasta in the latest patch, or that slim chance you're carrying rare meds. Perhaps the killers only play spasmodically, and aren't keen on the slower-paced (time consuming) repairing of vehicles, finding heli-crashes in the north, hunting animals & building camps, so they pack those few hours with as much action as they can muster. At the end of the day, you can never have an all-encompassing 'reason' for KOS because everyone has different MO's leading to their fun/10 rating. Having the biggest cities right on the coast (where you spawn) is probably a factor as well, I hardly see anyone up north anymore. With so many private hive servers & extra barracks/fire-stations everywhere, KOS seems to be the no-brainer playstyle - it's clear to me that a lot of the current player base has had enough of running simulator 2013.

ATTENTION: This is for people who have been banned falsely! Hackers Need Not Apply!
Grunner replied to VigilanteRonin's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
Laziness, ignorance, lack of common sense & arrogance are to blame if you have been banned without actually firing off scripts personally (hacking - but that terminology is incorrect). There are PLENTY of sources for loads of information about making DayZ mod run smoother, overclocking, hardware tweaks etc. Look it up you might learn something. Any logical person who has been a PC gamer for a while knows there is no point to downloading "FPS boosters" or any of that shite, because it's usually your shitty machine or mum's laptop to blame and nothing but $$$ and upgrading parts can fix that. This thread is like a wet bandaid. Instead of trying to address the consequences, why don't you post something to educate those who are naive enough to have their key stolen in the first place? EDIT: I really hope this discussion continues, there is a lot to be said for the impetuous/impatient nature of some members of the community, & frankly it's sad how many "I wuz not hacking I never hacked in my life plz unban me k thx" threads appear with the OP never having visited the forums before. -
Apparently, we're getting a new gear menu UI. Discuss.

Pretty sure I haven't seen it changed in patch notes, but camping tents don't usually take 50 guns and 150 items... -
Currently worth buying Arma 2 to play DayZ?
Grunner replied to King Mustard's topic in New Player Discussion
The standalone game will be completely independent of ARMA II, regardless of what expansions you might buy with it. Value-for-money-wise, ARMA II & OA is really all you should consider purchasing at this stage, as the high-def textures for models applies only for the ghillie suit, camo clothing & hero skins [if I recall correctly]. Not that big of a deal if you ask me, you can still see those skins in-game but they will be pretty low-res. Do a quick search of the comparison skins to get a better idea of whether you can handle the low-res textures or not. I'm fairly certain the DayZ mod for ARMA II will continue to be updated/enhanced, even once the standalone game is released. If spending either of those amounts is a concern for you, trust me when I say the experiences you'll have in DayZ mod will be worth every penny. EDIT: Here's an idea of the model textures for the hero skin: -
DayZ Murphy's Laws kicking in again. If you need wheels, they won't spawn. It's just the luck of the draw mate, after having my off-road molested by infected I need four windscreen glass. Guess what I can't find?
-
11. Animals you are hunting will despawn only when you need them the most.
-
I'll probably spend my first hours worming my way a few hundred meters through high grass, like I did when I first played the mod. At least in the SA one can enter all of the buildings, so those first hours & few hundred meters won't end with much cursing because you picked the green house to crawl to.

This is my personal account & in no way applies to any of you, but hopefully provides an insight into the life of a twenty-something year-old who just happens to enjoy gaming among other things, and why I choose vanilla over Origins [or any modded DayZ versions for that matter]: I don't know about the amount of free time you all are prepared to dedicate to a game, or any hobby for that matter, but personally, I don't have a lot. Building a house in Origins [from what I've seen on streams] either requires a lot of time to gather resources & blueprints, or a clan/group to make this more of a community achievement thus minimising the effort on an individual's part. I'm a lone wolf, always will be, & have no desire to seek 'gaming partners' or a clan. The thrill of meeting someone and cooperating for that session alone is enough for me, & I like the idea that one day I can be running around with a 1911 & an empty water bottle, and the next life I'm toting a DMR, GPS & rangefinders. Potentially, in one run from Cherno to Balota. In addition to DayZ, I play electric guitar with a group of friends on a weekly basis. I like to go freshwater & ocean fishing when I can spare the time. I enjoy the company of my gorgeous girlfriend for many, many hours of the week, as well as cook my own meals & hold down a full time job as a graphic designer for print applications. Gaming in general is pretty low on my priorities list to be honest. I simply don't have the hours in the day for Origins & all the bling they've thrown together. It's just fluff. Has anyone heard the quote, "the best things in life aren't things?" When I do have a few hours spare I like to go balls deep in vanilla DayZ instead of spending so much time hoarding 1's & 0's that are going to spawn the next time anyway. The argument of whether we should have fancy NPCs, post-apocalyptic houses, drivable bathtubs, & a magical island of military grade loot is laughable to me, and I think you just may have poured too many hours into this game looting to think any of that's warranted. Despite the hacking that went on, I really miss the interactions of 9+ months ago. That is what makes the game for me, there is NOTHING missing from vanilla, it's what you do with the tools you're given. On a side note, +1 vote for Chernarus. It's a killer map you can't deny that. EDIT: Sorry for the novel. TL;DR: not enough free time to get the most out of Origins, interaction in regular DayZ trumps 'added stuff.'

So many kodak moments! Great entertainment mate thanks for sharing :beans:
-
Disagree. If there's one thermal scope in the world why worry about adding countermeasures for it?
-
To be honest I doubt if Rocket ever said that thermal-scoped weapons would be added to the game. OP can you please provide a link? Otherwise I'm calling BS on this one, no point discussing "what-if" topics.

The barn just north out of Gvozdno is my favourite hiding place for vehicles (besides the chopper). Scatter your tents around in the conifers nearby. The server I played on deleted camps/vehicles outside of the map boundaries on reset, hence the reason for hiding in plain sight. Eight weeks and no-one disturbed my vehicles & tent contents, never had to move again after that. Good luck mate

No DevBlog this week but here is some screens
Grunner replied to rocket's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
Welcome back Rocket & cheers for the heads up mate, keep up the great work. EDIT at second glance: What's with the window cleaner? -
You better hope a roll of poo tickets & painkillers spawn in.
-
The three loot spawns for that building are inside the undercover part. You may not be able to see loot there as the ground sometimes obscures your visual, but trust your crosshair - a 'gear' symbol will come up if anything's there.
-
In my opinion, not worth making the dash from the trees to the buildings. It's too open. Great risk ≠ great reward. I hardly ever find heli crash sites nearby either, not like NWAF: http://southcoastbeanwars.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Crashed-Heli-Map-v7.jpg Miles away from the action, NEAF is for sightseers.

How Will You Play Standalone Without the Mod's Exploits?
Grunner replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
People have, and always will, find a way around AI. Like the mod for ARMA II, I believe zombies in the standalone will eventually become an annoyance (despite their new behaviour), as the threat from other players has been proven time and time again to be more dangerous and unpredictable. If anything I hope it means we'll see more players crawling through long grass/shrubs, instead of sprinting down the roads. Personally won't be changing my play-style as I maxed my points on stealth anyway, and have a very high degree of patience compared with footage I've seen of players/groups. -
Theres obviously a communication Issue
Grunner replied to BloodShifta's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
I can feel pieces of my brain falling away like wet cake.
