  1. It probably has something to do with how fast you are moving when you eject, just a guess but I've seen that cause issues with planes and other helos before.
  2. Well, why not contribute. I recommend staying away from the BDB servers, unless you're a fan of baseless accusations. The only time I've been accused and banned for hacking was on this server. Spawned in elektro, heard a firefight at the hospital, so after sneaking around to the fire station, I decided it was probably clear, and if not I had nothing to lose. Went up top, found 2 bodies, managed to score a M14, AS50, coyote pack and a ton of mags. Didn't even bust out the AS50, kept that in the pack and went down the ladder. Killed one dude in a car, then BAM, banned. Wouldn't have bothered me too much, except when I went to their forums to open a discussion, they weren't having it. Zero proof that I scripted, but getting that kind of gear within 20 minutes apparently means you're a scripter. if you haven't ever come across gear in a situation like this, you probably haven't been playing dayz for too long. I'm not typically the kind of person to care about getting banned for such things, but it just irks me to be accused of something I didn't do.
  3. I shot the gunner out of a helo that thought an almost freshly spawned bambi would be an easy kill.... I hid behind a wall, and they lowered quite a bit to line up with me.... popped around the wall, let a mag fly, and out fell the gunner... they got me in the end, but mainly because I couldn't stop laughing long enough to get behind better cover. Cheers to your helo takedown, that's definitely one for the record books!

    Explain Your Avatar!

I really couldn't explain the motivation behind my avatar. I know it doesn't fit in any way, shape or form. Perhaps the absolute abstract idea that it would be paired with my forum account is the main inspiration to use it. In the end, nobody will really ever know.
  5. Typically, I park outside of towns and walk in. Not just because I want the loot to spawn, but also so I can approach with caution. If i'm just saying screw it, and throw caution to the wind, I'll park about 50-100m away. Usually everything spawns then.

    NVG and AWS Weapon(S).

Pretty sure, judging by the poll on this forum, that the thermal weapons will probably be gone. Honestly, I'd like to see zero night vision items in standalone. Would make it that much more intense at night, and level the playing field.
  7. Half the fun is finding what you need to survive. The other half is going up against a 7 man clan by yourself, taking down as many as you possibly can before you inevitably die, or when you get experienced enough, wrecking as many as you can until they retreat/die in a blaze of glory.

Are we having a new forum for the SA?

I hope not. I don't want to have to go around lookin for more beans, it took a while to stockpile what I've got.

Discussion of the standalone defecation\poo feature

bingo. finding that balance between realism and gameplay is a really, really important aspect of game design. and rocket makes a lot of mention of trying new things, but at the same time it doesn't take a genius to realize where a lot of these ideas are completely and utterly absurd, and will do more damage to the game than add anything worthwhile. i'm sure it'll all get worked out, but if these are the kinds of things we can expect to stick around, then I'll be pretty bummed to see this go standalone.
  10. which facebook you talking about? would love some point of reference other than "facebook"

    Did Namalsk get it right?

Everything is just as plentiful on the map, you just have to know where to look. Personally, I find the heatpack thing to be more of an annoyance than adding any survival aspects to the game. Mainly because it doesn't seem to work too well. i'd say probably the best part about the map is the stronger focus on assault rifles over snipers, thanks to the shaking bit.

    I am sad

private hives bring so much more life to the game. i'm glad i don't have to spend 3 hours travelling all of chernarus to find a makarov, just to have it lost due to a hacker. some of the best times i've had on dayz have been on private hive servers, with modified versions of chernarus. i don't get the hate.

L85 Should it stay or go

Nothing should flat out go, if anything we need more weapons in the game. Replacing it with something else, I'm all for. But no more thermals in the game. Makes it easy mode. -My 2 cents

    ... worried about standalone :(

Oh, I'm no stranger to game development :) And I do get what you're saying, and you're right. I guess I forget sometimes just how different this engine is turning out than the Arma 2 engine, and how much work is likely still to be done on it. I do think, however, that construction would be a task better performed as part of the initial groundwork for the engine, to prevent a much more challenging time implementing it at a later stage, but of course I know you have a better grasp of the engine than I do. I appreciate your responses, and openness to discussion for this kind of stuff (especially for those of us who don't reddit :P). I do hold a lot of faith in what you're doing, and what you're giving back to the hardcore gamers. And my concerns for the final product are really just a reflection of that.

    ... worried about standalone :(

I think you could argue that stuff like the vehicles and construction, especially, is pretty core to the experience, given how drastically it will change the experience. Especially the construction aspect. I'd wager, at least, that it's more of a core mechanic than diseases, or say, dogs. You are correct, though, about making mistakes. I'm not here to say play it safe the whole time, because if you did that, DayZ wouldn't exist. However, there is a lot of room to look at mistakes developers have made in the past, with other games. Hell, you can even look at the issues people have with DayZ to see this. Particularly, what people really, truly dislike is overly complicated systems that maintain too many variables. The disease system you have suggested, at least in my eyes, falls under that category. Weapons degrading, okay, that might be more my own issue with a system than something I think won't work, because I'm sure you can implement it in a way that not only makes sense but isn't too cumbersome throughout gameplay. I get it is all something that we all can't know how it will work until it is implemented. Just keep in mind, that while the game is about survival, adding in too many elements regarding survival will effectively create more annoyance than drive, and will potentially alienate the majority of the player base. In any case, I'll be buying your game and providing all the feedback I can for it, because I want it to succeed probably more than you do :P quick edit. of course, the absolute best possible compromise is to give us quite a bit of control over our servers (private hive, of course) to provide the playstyle we would prefer. say, remove diseases and weapons degrading, if that's not our thing. i'm not too sure on your plans for allowing us to customize our private servers, but the more power you provide us, the better we can tailor our experiences in the game, and the more we can get out of it in the long run.

    ... worried about standalone :(

I get the desire for realism in the game, I totally do. There are reasons, however, why there aren't any games out there that are life simulations. Mainly because realism lacks balance. But also because life is full enough of tedious, boring BS. Games are typically supposed to be fun, though, and too much realism can suck the fun out of anything. I'm slightly worried about standalone, and sure it's not here yet so I can't really say anything. But weapons degrading, I'm not a fan of. At all. This disease system? I think it already sounds stupid as hell. Ultimately, we'll see, as time is the only thing that will tell. Also, to the guy above me, it's hard to say "Trust them, they're professional game developers." Isn't rocket new to the game development thing? And in any case, if he's not, tons of "professional" developers manage to fuck up perfectly good formulas all the time. Not saying these guys will, but it's not enough to put my mind at ease.
  17. Agreed. To really keep true to the spirit of DayZ, I think it would be best to take a look at youtube, to see what exactly it is that made it famous, and think "How can we expand upon this? How can we make this better?" There are already a lot of survival aspects to DayZ, and sure there should be more that are more meaningful. But something as overly complicated as a disease system that is being discussed, that doesn't add much value to the game and doesn't necessarily make a lot of sense (hep C from combat? sure if it's melee combat and both people get hit it makes sense, but how much melee is really in the game anyway?) really takes a lot of focus away from what makes the game fun. I'd like to see more focus on stuff like base building, first, then stuff like the survival aspects. The wasteland mod has some great base building, perhaps you could be taking a page from that? I knowt he standalone engine is quite different, but I'm sure you can find inspiration in what is already out there.
  18. I get the feeling we're really losing sight of that fine line between realism and fun, with posts like this. Hopefully we'll still have the mod....
  19. the odds of your computer crashing during a firefight are way higher than during anything else. when i do crash, which isn't TOO often, it's usually during a fight. not ideal, but it is the kind of issue that would become game-breaking if it caused death every time. game development actually tends to focus on these issues in exactly such a way. there isn't always a fair way to address it, but in a game like dayz, it is an essential issue to have covered. however, it shouldn't be difficult to have it detect something like a client crash.

Keeping a gun cus it looks cool

svd is my baby, i'd take that over any gun, any day. and not just for the "look cool" factor.
  21. may not be the best weapon, but it's certainly the most fun

    What Luck.

dayz = worlds greatest troll. i can run around, looking for a single car tire, across the entire map, and only find scrap, fuel tank parts, and engine parts galore. of course, when I need engine parts, all I can find are fucking tires. That's DayZ!

    Stealth Vs. Speed

Unless I know for sure someone is around, I go full sprint everywhere. Hardly anyone is good enough to hit a springing, weaving target, and if they wanna try and shoot me, I'll know where they are at that point, get behind cover, flank and destroy. I very, very rarely get hit doing this. In fact, I can only think of one time someone has managed to peg me while doing this. And he was practically firing his DMR at full auto. if you bring up the steam overlay while holding W, you don't need to leave it up to keep moving. it acts like you're still holding the button down, so you can alt look around freely and smoke a bowl or whatever while you travel :P

    24/7 Daylight Servers... UGH?

It's pointless to play with overpowered items like thermal scopes and NVGs in the game. Not to mention, the lighting system isn't very well designed for night time. Zombie aggro is broken as fuck during the night, as well. I like playing on night servers, when it's a level playing field, but it almost never is. Either you'll have the gamma adjusters, or the server hoppers/server admins with a full loadout just wrecking all the fresh spawns. And for the "survival realism"..... I stand by my constantly made statement, Gameplay > Realism
