The only friendlies in this game are the ones in your teamspeak/vent/mumble. Don't bother being friendly to players in servers, they are guaranteed to kill you.

Can you find camping tents in deer huts?
sostronk replied to nmford's topic in New Player Discussion
Check this map: http://dayzdb.com/map Click the dear stand and it will list what it spawns and the percentage chance of what will spawn. -
So How Many Have Stoped Playing DayZ?
sostronk replied to LumberBack's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Im a survivor. Ive literally killed no one since I started playing this game. I mostly stay North and run away if I see anyone. Although Im packing some of the better Military grade weapons Im tempted to start moving towards being a bandit. But Id like to understand other mechanics a bit better like vehicles etc. Surviving is pretty difficult right now, particularly because of food/water being a little scarce. I recon towns heavily before I enter but I often find snipers and obvserve them and won't hit the town unless they go away. The main thing I want to achieve right now is the map. I really don't know where I am often and I want to know the map much better so I know where I am headed. But Im losing faith in this game ever going anywhere. -
Quick question about Packs and Tents
sostronk replied to vanchrian's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Why not get multiple tents? IIRC you can have one per server. Just server hop and have multiple tents and switch around what you need? -
So, everyone keeps saying this game is in Alpha, but
sostronk posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
My understanding was that Alpha testing was closed to public (in-house testing) and it wasn't until Closed Beta stage that people outside of a company would start playing/testing this game and it wasn't until Open Beta that a game was completely available to any player (like this one is). Anyone care to elaborate? Is this game actually in the Alpha stage? -
I really don't think COD/BF are an issue. The concept of this game is very different. I think new people (like me) know this before they come into the game from the hype it received. At least I did. I think the only people who even talk about COD/BF are the ARMA players who seem to want to label new players with this tag, no matter what, because they want this game to be recognized as a more "realistic-hardcore game".

Destroying a huge camp up north (sorry cheaters)
sostronk replied to deadzen's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Didn't see anything that suggested it was a hackers camp. Looked like a regular clan camp from what I seen. -
Do I need a compass to do this? Ive looked at tutorials on it and it doesn't seem to work. I have a map, gps and watch. Or do I have everything I need and just doing it wrong?
-
I think there is a bit more to it. This game isn't going to go standalone or do anything people are hoping it will. Its going to be a mod attached to ARMA for its entire existence. People came in following the hype and hoping more was coming due to Rockets pipe dreams and these players are slowly coming to realise it aint going to happen.

Standalone by September? No chance
sostronk replied to TheMachine's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
From my knowledge, game engines can take years for developers to make. I really don't think Rocket will be making his own. I really don't think anyone is going to give him one. I don't think anyone is going to fund him when there are other competitors tapped into this market already. I expect this game to remain a mod. I believe all this talk of standalone etc is just a really big pipe dream. -

Just a quick question about hackers.
sostronk replied to lBiscuit's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Depends how close to Cherno it is. Some people do setup tents ~2km out of town so they can camp. But most legit tents that have this kind of stuff are usually pretty far North in places they can drop (Airfields etc). -
Its quite easy to avoid them, just frustratingly time consuming. If you are crawling and hit NUMBER PAD ENTER you can predict their movements and avoid coming in detection range. This is what I do in towns that appear to have no players in or around it. I clear all buildings without detection. If there are snipers/other players around its often better to run. Once you know the city, you can easily avoid all zombies. The only time its not always possible is when players cause you problems. The first and most important thing to remember is that Zombies don’t run inside. Once you know the buildings layout you will be able to do this easily. In some maps you need to use the terrain. If there aren’t decent buildings head into the forest. Some places you cannot run, only walk, so run over those as its an obstacle for Zombies and you will be able to shake them doing this. It’s a learning curb and one that takes time. I don’t particularly like the idea of having weapons to start off with. I think some spawn points are a bit hard to deal with without a weapon. But what I am seeing is players running straight into major cities and killing anything they can like it’s a Call of Duty deathmatch game. Its not all about this. I heavily agree. A party joining system is crucial to the overall success of this game. TBH I think this is a great concept and mod, but that’s all its ever going to be. Rocket won’t get this game off the ground to the level players seem to be expecting.

Don't know if players are trolling. Ive spent the last few days around Green Mountain and haven't run into anyone. Found a tent city full of gear though. Thanks for the loot.

Every one I kill thinks I'm a hacker...
sostronk replied to Kriptz1's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Wait, doesn't everyone hack in this game? -
DAYZ. what happens in the game will happen in real life.
sostronk replied to tfninja's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The way I see it, if a person goes on a shooting rampage and kills people, the government and the system that the government has in place is responsible. If the system provides for access to items that are designed to kill, then it is a failed system (which contradicts the current "default" US beliefs). On the other hand if the person is forced to kill someone with a butter knife, hes responsible because there is no facility in place that can stop people from buttering their bread. But religion is a facility that has proven to be responsible for mass murder over the last few thousand years right up to this very day. Religion is a weapon and its used as such. -
I don't think its that amazing either tbh. But I see its potential. I also see the problems in front of it in order to reach its potential and I don't think its going to reach that.

Has anyone actually died of Hunger or Thirst ?
sostronk replied to Spunkmire's topic in New Player Discussion
I died of hunger. Your icon blinks for a while, sometimes it looks like its fully empty. After a while you start to bleed until your blood is empty, then you die. I think at some stage I passed out when my blood was low as well. Can't remember, was too busy panicking at that stage. Thanks to thunderdome hack for spawning me in the middle of nowhere already low on food. -
The Future Of DayZ (Discussion) [Warning: Long Post]
sostronk replied to Trajado's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
It hurts to say it, but DayZ is just a Rocket pipe dream. There are way too many hurdles in the way, it's just not going to happen. -
DAYZ. what happens in the game will happen in real life.
sostronk replied to tfninja's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Gonna turn this religious. Maybe religious people should study some history so they can realise that more people have died in the name of religion then any other human cause. -
Players are just playing the game they have now. The game is still very alpha-esque. Bandits who are playing solely for kills are probably out of challenges in the game. Once you get to a certain level it seems "survival" isn't much of an issue. I think there are a number of things that can improve the game and will decrease the shoot on sight ettiquette, but these things are a long way off. Its up to Rocket and company to get their shite together and impement it. Don't think that will happen though. Iv'e become somewhat pessimistic about this games future, despite its increasing popularity. When I start a new life, if I start in Cherno or Electro Ill hit it quickly and leave and head north. The looting North might take longer but you can get fully kitted out this way. But most new players don't have the patience to do this. It also makes it hard for them for a while (as Ive experienced) not to run out of food or water. Especially if you don't have map + compass + GPS so you can navigate adequately.
-
And is there a way for me to minimize it? Specifically im thinking about sprinting/running/crouching/crawling. I know environmental factors come into play, but if im running between two town for instance, will I conserve hunger/thirst levels by crouch running instead of running or sprinting. Same with crawling. There was one case where I starved and bled out from it and had alot of stuff so I would have crawled if I thought it would have helped.
-
I don't kill on sight. I run on sight. I mostly play very tight and scout a town for a significant period before moving in to loot (especially checking spots I think are best for snipers). If I have a clean shot on a player who I think is packing stuff I need, then I might kill them if I think I can get a clean hit, but I won't take risks and I certainly won't waste my time with someone who looks like they aren't kitted out or someone I don't think I can safely loot afterwards. This also. Ive just read how to do this. Its unbelievable how easy it is to dupe weapons/bullets/food/water.

Why the "HIVE" won't work until we have some stability
sostronk replied to Sol (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The hive causes problems for other reasons too. The major ISP in my country (Australia) provides free servers for games but restricts them locally (only allow AUS/NZ players to play). Because of this a major source of servers in this country is denied as Hive connected servers aren't allowed to do this. -
How do we deal with the hacker in thunderdome when he is invisible and has godmode on? EDIT: I experience hackers on a daily basis. Not one day goes by that I don't. It includes everything from thunderdome, invulnerability, invisibility, scripting any weapon and vehicle they want instantly, wall hacks and pretty much anything that exists in terms of hacks. The game is completely broken. BI will most likely do another ban wave and fix the exploits and a few days later those fixes will be overcome. Whats going to fix the problems? Nothing. They will exist at least until the game becomes stand alone. If you get called into thunderdome, disconnect is the best you can do. When your reconnect to another server you will start where the thunderdome was, which could be a good thing or a bad thing.
