So does this make me an asshole?
crockett (DayZ) replied to electroban's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
That's because 9 out of 10 times that guy you let live shoots you in he back soon as he gets a gun. Everyone is friendly until they get the advantage or have a gun. -
bye bye hackers ... you will not be missed
crockett (DayZ) replied to trashcanman67's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Because those same people jump on a server while reading 2000 players banned, only to get dropped from the air a few seconds later or insta killed by a server wide kill off. The shitty script kiddies no longer even have the decency to thunderdome everyone and let the best guy win.. Instead they just click a button and kill the whole server population. Honestly it really makes me wonder what kind of people are behind doing that. I could see getting your jollies once or twice but I just don't get the amusement of doing it over and over. -
Invisible wall at edge of map?
crockett (DayZ) replied to diddy (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yea that's kinda my thoughts as well. They should just change the map into an Island. This solves all the issues of out of bounds in one step. It also then creates more places to build other northern cities, to encourage players to move away from the starter coasts. Personally, I'd have it one big island with starter beaches all around the coast then have the good stuff toward the center much like Utes. As for the other stuff, you have to understand, very little out side of custom code was used to create DayZ. Most of what we play on comes from ARMA II. This isn't like a full conversion mod of another game like say how Counter Strike was a full conversion of Half Life. This is more or less like the old scool zombie mod for Counter Strike, when the game wasn't changed just a few things added with changes to the gameplay to create the mod. This is why I laugh at people that love to say it's ok about the bugs because it's "ALPHA". Well guess what people ARMA II is not ALPHA and most of the bugs we have are from the core of ARMA II. -
Psychology of a Hacker vs Exploiter vs Greifer

99% of people just want to be assholes & get1s things with zero effort. The only thing that keeps most them from doing this in real life, is consequences of their actions. On the internet however they are free to act like little immature dicks and there is little anyone can do about it. -

Hehe yea the script kiddies haven't gone anywhere but that's pretty insane number of a thousand bans in just 4 or 5 days. -
Are you The Cheater's Bitch?
crockett (DayZ) replied to Jex =TE= (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Sadly private hives are not immune to script kiddies but depending how active the admins are it can help you avoid it but I've still fell victim to them many times. I can also tel you stopping and scanning around with your thermal will do little to nothing because any hacker that is going to teleport to you will not be seen as he was just spawn right next to you. In fact quite the opposite approach is likely a better tactic. If you keep moving at sprint speeds it's harder for them to catch you when they spawn to your location unless they spawn in front of your path. Of course nothing will make you immune from getting insta death by entire server kill offs from of 12 year olds with ADD trying to play god. In the end, private hives are only as good as the admins that run the server. -
Please, pretty please fix the player avatar animations/first person controller so they are more fluid and life like. One of the things that drives me crazy is your character has to stop to switch weapons or throw something. I realize DayZ is just using the basic ARMA II animations & first/3rd person controller but please make things a bit smoother like you would find in a typical FPS game. This is one of the things that has always driven me crazy with BI's games as far back as operation flashpoint.

1 suggestion/request for the stand alone.
crockett (DayZ) replied to crockett (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Trust me , if I was in a firefight or trying to kill a zombie, I wouldn't have to "stop" to pull out my pistol or toss a grenade.. I'm pretty certain, that I could shoulder harness or drop my rifle and pull out my hand gun.. Might not be as accurate as standing still but it could still be done.. You can reload while running but can't swap to a pistol.. seems fairly strange.. -
How Hacking Costs Rocket (Bohemia) Money, AND WHY THAT DOESN'T MATTER (includes reply from Rocket)
crockett (DayZ) replied to jaws4096's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I still play, because I like the concept of the game, but I've drastically changed my play-style because the hackers & sheer amount of duped/scripted weapons. I no longer play the game of survival PVPer where I attempted to gear my char up well and was very careful about my PVP encounters. (yes I was a bandit but I was much more careful than I am now) At this point, I pretty much just play what I call Cherno Champion.. I play much more reckless & pretty much go to high populated/ high value loot areas on the coast like Cherno, Baltoa Air field, Elektro and just randomly kill whom ever I come across with what ever weapon I can find. Even doing this I get frustrated by the all to often complete server kills by hackers or by the obvious "I duped" every weapon in my inventory" AS50 nerds that have entire loot kits soon as they run to their tents after a death. Now dayz I just run around and find a random AK, lee Enfield or what ever I can scrap together that can kill someone and I see how long I can live in the cities expecting be get hacker killed at any point. This is really the only challenge I have left in this game as trying to gear up & survive long term is a wasted effort, with so many snotty nosed script kiddies running around -
Everyone is friendly until they have a gun or an advantage on you. I've let countless new spawns live only to have a few of them come back & shoot me in the back.. Now I just kill them all and let the respawns sort them out.

I just wanted to give fair warning that this server has a pretty bad issue with hackers and doesn't seem to have any admins (at least at times I've tried to play here) Likely the most hacking I've seen to date on a active private hive.. Yesterday I joined this server and had a guy that was invulnerable chasing me with an axe. I shot him multiple times with a shot gun. I would see him bleeding yet he chased me around for another 3 or 4 mins never ran out of blood never died and killed me. My next life, I spawn in with a Soldier Zombie skinned hacker standing a few feet away from me sporting a gold AK. Needless to say he couldn't be killed & and he killed myself and one other new spawn. Today I tried to give the server another try. I get a Cherno spawn and see a helli on top the the international building with AS50 fire also coming from from the top of the hotel building down on the coast. I took cover in the large 3 story industrial building to the far east side of Cherno to try and figure out where any other the snipers were. Only a few mins of being there I hear a mini gun (sounded like gun from a little bird chopper) that shoots the hotel building until it's destroyed. The chopper takes off and comes over to pick up whom ever the guy was with the min-gun and it flys off. I make my way to a cafe building toward the center of town after looting a en field when suddenly the building I was in starts getting spammed with HE 203 rounds. After about the 8th explosion I just logged off knowing there is no sense wasting time fighting guys that are obviously spawning in hacked weapons & have unlimited ammo. Anyway I'm only posting this, because I saw someone mentioning in another topic, that this server as a hack free server, which is only reason I gave it a try.

Serious questions for Rocket & Battleye
crockett (DayZ) posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I've played on a lot of private hives and on a few of them with Admins that know their shit, they have fixed many things themselves that plague this game. Weeks before tents were fixed "officially" I was playing on a private hive, that had fixed tents & vehicles so they saved properly. Yet took forever to get this working on the public hive. Right now I've been playing on a server that has fixed all duping issues with the exception of tents. Meaning trying to dupe items in backpacks or by other means fails, but they just haven't been able to fix duping by tents at restarts. Yet officially this has yet to be addressed and anyone can dupe their AS50 at the drop of a hat long as they have a buddy to help therm or eat/drink unlimited amounts of time from a single item... No server restarts needed. Now on to battleye.. Why is it, that I played on some German & French servers yesterday that have been running a 3rd party anti hack script. (http://gotcha-antihack.com/) That kicks/bans people for teleporting, spawning vehicles & having guns they aren't supposed to have.. yet battleye can't seem to do the same on the fly.. Why is it some single person that developed a anti hack can actually start making a dent in the hacking issues while the official supported anti hack fails and does much of nothing? Honestly me and 3 friends played on a server yesterday that while we did run into hackers we were actually able to play a good 2 hours before having it happen. (simply amazing considering we play on large servers that hackers prey on) In two hours of being on one of these server I honestly must of seen 7 to 8 players kicked for having AS50 with thermal scopes. I understand that this is yet another whine thread about hackers but it's questions that should be asked..the fact is random server admins & 3rd party coders are fixing things that should of been fixed ages ago officially. Why can't this be done by the guys that are supposed to do it before there is no one left playing this mod? Honestly I don't have a lot of faith in shelling out more cash for a standalone if you guys can't get your act together now.. What will make anything different later, if you don't do these fixes now? You could build trust now by fixing things that can be fixed but instead you leave them for ages or simply ignore them. Why should I believe this will magically change once a stand alone is released? -

Anyone that has played online games for awhile could likely tell you there is no way to say yes or no. Hackers will always be around online games, it's just how much will they affect the game-play of the average player. Likely a better question, is how much different is the 2.5 engine going to be vs what we are playing on today in regard to not being so "trusting". Personally, I find it hard to believe how many hackers are in this game. It's next to impossible to play on any server where hacking of some form hasn't affected your game time. Be it the guys insta killing the entire server or normal players using a duped AS50 or some other weapon/item that was created on purpose by the inventory system bugs or spawned in. The fact that Arma II is such a client trusting engine is why we have what we have today.. I just wonder what is being done to change this for the standalone. -

Rocket have you guys looked into other non conventional ways of combating these cheaters? Granted what I'm going to suggest wont physically stop hacking of the game but perhaps slow it's ability to spread. There are simple things that can be done such as making complaints to paypal on individuals whom are trying to sell things like CD keys & loot spawns. There are other angles to work as well, BE could DMCA the various hacker message boards/websites for allowing these CD keys to be sold on their sites by their communities. You can DMCA the server host, the domain registrar & even search engines to have these sites removed from google listings (the other SE's as well) Google for one is now finally agreed to start de-listing sites that are violating copyright rules if complaints come from the content owners. I'd assume trying to "sell" CD keys and in games items would be violation of the ARMA II EULA. Granted it's not going to stop the hacking but at very least might make it harder for the script kiddies to find them. Hitting the paypal accounts would also stop the profiting of CD key thefts. -
I did this yesterday.. I was getting tired of hackers spawning on top of me every time I try to have a little camp with a sniper rifle. I logged into a populated server and crawled into position & set a satchel right behind me. Sure enough wan't even 10 mins and I can see a guy in a Ghillie spawn in almost right on top of me from 3rd person. Was he a hacker I wasn't 100% but I was 99% sure he didn't just magically log in there like a lucky leprechaun.. I set off the satchel blowing my self up & he lived. which pretty much cleared up that 1% chance that he was actually a skilled player..

Then severs shouldn't get black-listed for running a 3rd party anti-cheat system designed for dayz and banning players they catch cheating. Are you honestly going to sit here and try to tell me that hackers can't tele-port themselves to positions in Arma II or see every player on the map? Not to mention invulnerability? Do you really think these cheats end with DayZ? It's in BE's own interest to help stop the cheating. Likely the only reason these cheats haven't spread into other Arma mods (if they haven't) is because most players play DayZ. -
I just realized something about humanity
crockett (DayZ) replied to MperorM's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
My Humanity almost always resets after I die. Yesterday I killed 5 survivors & 1 bandit. I was about -8500 humanity.(I was +5200 before the killings) I got killed by a hacker & then respawn as a bandit with 150 humanity. Before I could make it to the first town my humanity had raised for doing nothing but running on the coast and I lost my bandit skin. I wish I could keep my bandit skin, so I'd stop losing backpacks.. -

A few that Iv'e played on that have Admins whom keep up with the servers can be found by searching. Billy Mays Remembrance Foundation ( http://bmrf.me ) Rinaun.com private Hive servers (http://rinaun.com) The Asylum (http://www.dayzasylum.com/ & http://www.dayzforum.com/index.php ) Each have fixed their own various things and some edit a few things to make gameplay more enjoyable.. (like Rinaun has changed vehicle spawns to be mostly motorcycles, ATV's & bicycles to stop the hoarding) The Asylum has a nice stats set up & Billy Mays has a very fast server and fixed a lot of duping problems. Each of these have been pretty decent servers IMO with minimal hacking issues. I'm sure there are more out there as well. -

crockett (DayZ) replied to crockett (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Honestly I used to rarely come across hackers but now it's almost as regular as playing the game.. Yesterday myself & 2 friends were killed by a guy at close combat range who was sporting a AS50 that he could fire as fast as he could click the mouse button. It was literally as rapid firing as the M14 I was carrying. Prior to this we had a guy on a bike roll up to us that we unloaded full clips on and he just kept riding around playing Gangnam Style on direct. Granted this one was at least amusing.. After we died to the guy with the Semi Auto AS50, we meet up & were headed to Cherno and found quite literally ever vehicle in the game spawned on the coast at prigorodky. Just now I logged in on a semi populated server (about 25+) and I was just running up the coast sporting a Lee Enfield when a guy comes up to me and spawns a Coyote Backback full of supplies & a silenced M9/M4A1 CCO SD with loads of ammo. (public server) I was in this server less than 15 mins and was already geared to the hilt. On one side I honestly was looking forward to running into Elektro with a Lee Enfield and seeing how long I can survive & how many I could kill, but on the other hand I know I just lost all my stuff to a hacker yesterday so getting this somewhat makes up for the time I spent on that last kit that was instantly lost to no fault of my own. I take the gear and run into Elekro, see geared out a guy entering the Cafe across from the store.. He comes out & he's carrying a AS50 so I killed him and loot his body and it's obvious the guy ran into the same hacker I did. Now I'm sporting a M4A1 CCO SD/AS50/Coyote Backpack/Ghille Suite and all the ammo and a basic supplies I needed. All this in about 30 mins with almost no effort. When I play on (good) private Hives this type of gear is almost never seen, yet on public servers is a dime a dozen.. -

Yea, I'm not sure which server that one is, but I forgot about working Hud.. That's something else that was fixed on the non hive I was playing on. Granted I can give a little slack on the hud issue as that was a bug that just started after that latest patch.. IMO it really should of been avoided by a little bite of testing prior to release of the last patch. (it should of been found before that patch was released but I can give a little slack on that one) -

crockett (DayZ) replied to peep's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
I've played on server 1 the last day or so and just wanted to say the server is very fast and smooth. I've had no lag the game seems to play very well. A lot of servers you can see performance issues when they get up around 30+ players and loot spawns sometimes start freaking out, but so far it's been very good on your server. I will say I've had a bit of a rough go though..I usually don't die a lot on private Hives but I've died 5 times just yesterday which becomes a bit frustrating. 3 of the deaths were combat related which I'm ok with aside from guy sniping new spawns with an AS50, but that's DayZ. (getting used to no 3rd person is rough) I did however have 2 deaths from glitches.. The first was from a tree stand where I just randomly broke my legs.. The second was after a restart and soon as I logged in I was falling from the sky and died as soon as I hit the ground. This one was abit annoying as I was all the way up north and had all the parts to fix a Black SUV I had found, but by the time I made it back to my body someone else had taken the SUV. The ladder was likely a game glitch but the random dropping from the air soon as I logged in & loaded was very odd and I've only experienced that from hackers. I don't think it was a hacker but it was very odd. I'm going to try to get 2 of my friends I play with to jump over to this server, but I'm not sure if they will being there is no 3rd person now. Maybe if the 2nd server gets populated. One suggestion I'd like to make.. Add more bicycle spawns. In real life there would be loads of bikes around and they would likely be one of the main forms of transportation, being they are quiet and require no fuel. -
DayZ takistan opinion
crockett (DayZ) replied to Audio Rejectz's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
After playing this map a few times, I'm of the opinion that the zeds need to be toned down a bit during the day time being there is really no where to hide or try to stay under cover. I had 18 zombies chasing me the other day and it was pretty damn annoying as it gets old very fast, specially when you are trying to hunt other players. If you are working with another player it's next to impossible to not aggro half the zombies in a town.. The map however is actually very good for PVP and playing as a bandit.. Tons of places to ambush people & the way the towns are set up it just naturally forces players into the areas around the main roads. It's also a great map to just use a Lee Enfield on, if you are PVPing. -
I no longer think of this game as a zombie survival game but rather a game where you try to play and survive against the hackers in a unforgiving environment. I figured I'd tell the story of a single day on the public Hive and a survival attempt vs hackers & script kiddies. First off I will say that I tend to jump around on private Hives a lot and always have several characters I can use with various kits across these different servers. I find this keeps my interest up in the game and it keeps me from being too disappointed if I lose a character that I've spent a lot of time on. After one of my friend's & myself both lost two of our better characters in a pretty decent fire-fight neither us us really wanted to go through the effort of gearing up that day. Instead we decided to jump on the public hive where neither of us had played in well over 2 weeks and we both had solid kits. Upon logging in, I noticed I had a satchel charge in my kit I had forgot about, likely the only one on the public Hive that has ever been legitimately found. We came up with the great idea to bomb the Cherno Church and made our way from up north down to the south on a highly populated server. By the time we made it to the outskirts of Cherno we decided it was likely way too hot to pull off our plan, rustled with maybe blowing up the NW Hospital but instead decided to blow up the tower at the Balota airfield due to the server population. We cleared the airfield of an unlucky victim and set up inside the tower in order to prep the explosives. My friend was under the stairs & I was just above placing the satchel, when a defective Chinese circuit caused it to malfunction blowing up premature, killing my 17 day old character but somehow allowing my friend to live. I set forth on the mad dash to get my gear back while my friend kept watch best he could.. (he was about 4k blood) He somehow manages to kill 3 players whom tried to loot my body one of which ran into the exact same tree while he was in trying to lose a zombie. I get back to my gear only to notice someone has managed to steal my FN FaL but my DMR was still in my backpack. However thanks to public hives being script kiddies paradise, we both end up with Coyote Backpacks, Range finders & NV from two of the guys he killed. The only decent 2nd weapon they had was an AS50 so now I'm sporting a AS50 & a DMR. (lol hoping no CQC finds us) At this time the server is dwindling with only a handful of players, so we retreat to the wood and log out in hopes to find more population elsewhere. This is where the hacking begins.. We log onto a server with almost 40 players while being in the middle of the woods.. My friend loads first as my client bugged out forcing me to restart. He dies by a hacker about 1 min after logging in.. The guy appears on top of him laughs over direct while my friend shoots him then my friend was dead with his 20 day old character and loot was all lost. We had a back up plan and headed to a tent we had close by on another server which had soso gear in it rearmed and made our way to the woods near Cherno then logged over to a higher populated server where we planned to get some pay back on unsuspecting victims. We logged into a highly populated server and trying to plan how we would enter Cherno, we are welcomed to the "you are dead" screen along with about 10 others on the server of about 40. No gun fire, no falling to our death, no cows parachuting from the sky or nuclear explosions.. Just instant death with all gear lost by some prepubescent kid playing with a script he downloaded from the internet. We hop over to yet another highly populated server and decide we are raiding what ever city we are both near with what ever we can get our hands on.. Cherno yet again it was. I came in a bit ahead of my friend and managed to die with just an axe in my hands.. Re-spawn near Baltoa as my friend is just getting close to Cherno when he says he's found 3 tents.. I had managed to only find a double barrel shotgun & several rounds and he has found a tent with a L85, DMR & other obviously duped in items such as range finders & NV, Coyote backpack ect..ect.. (guns were limited for what ever reason) Just as he is saying he got this loot we are both teleported to the north west runway inside a hanger along with the other 30 or so players on the server. My friend and I both managed to abort before we died and we logged into a server with zero players for the first time that day. We both came in bleeding & had to bandage right away. We both survive the 3rd hacker of the day but still haven't been able to do what we intended and that was attack a major populated city and now we are all the way back up north where we started. We decided to make the best of it and try to kit out a bit better. We both find 2nd guns that are so'so but myself still only having an assault backpack, sort of limits the usefulness of gear I could get. We head to Stary in an attempt to at least find me a decent backpack then plan to head back south. No such luck of finding a backpack in Stary & the tents are all pretty much giving us crappy loot & neither of us are really interested in putting any effort into farming at this point. We decided to get out of Stary to the wood then most likely log over to a private Hive, when yet again my friend is teleported yet I'm left in the same spot. We are still the only two players on this server. No one else has joined and no one is showing on the player list, but my friend is teleported to debug plains so he instantly logs out when some dude starts talking to him on direct chat.. He logs off & we join yet another server to try and hook up & gear up. He spawns in Solnichniy & I'm still just outside Stary but we both still have our gear.. Yet again on this server with no one logged in but ourselves, we find yet more hacking as on the map there is an X just to the west of Elektro with the words "Hacker loot here, take what you want". Having nothing to lose we meet up there and sure enough there is a medical box with 5 to 10 of every gun in ARMA II along with crap loads of everything else under the sun. We spent a bit of time playing with the 50 satchel charges and learning how to use them properly. Geared up with only stuff that can be found in DayZ then logged out.. One side of me says we shouldn't of taken anything but the other side says "F" it as we have had stuff taken away far more times by hackers and we deserved a break. Regardless, if it was right or wrong, I think it's safe to say this game is really no longer about surviving the zombies but rather surviving the Hacker Apocalypse.

DayH: Surviving the Hacker Apocalypse
crockett (DayZ) replied to crockett (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
No offense but I simply do not believe that you play on populated servers.. 20 is more than enough to have a hacker show up.. As I mentioned above we had one last night on a sever that it was just myself & one friend. Playing on small servers is just not fun as I'm not interested in farming items all day, I play for the player vs player interaction. Just now I joined a server with 30-35 people.. I was set up on a hill overlooking a popular loot spot and next thing I know I'm falling from the sky and see others falling with me.. I hit abort as fast as I could and as I did I see my legs get broken and get the shock icon hearing my char scream but I had not died yet. I logged into another server and I ended up in the same place I was before I was magically dropped from the sky. I can only assume I was able to abort before the hive registered I was falling & hitting the ground because it was less than 10 seconds from time I was in air til hitting ground/aborting. I seriously do not believe anyone can possibly play on active "public" hive servers, with out having experienced a run in with a hacker. There is no being careful about it because there is nothing you can do to avoid them outside of not playing. The only thing you can really do is to adjust your play style to give yourself the ability to comeback quickly after getting hit by one.
