It's an unique unit type that can be created within ARMA. Honestly, I'm not sure myself on all the ways in which they differ from other regular ARMA units. I think the most significant difference is that they aren't assigned any AI routines. Both animals and zombies are agents, for instance. If zombies were created as actual unit entities then there'd a huge mess and CPU overhead as the ARMA engine tried to run the base soldier AI code on each zombie. IOW, the mod wouldn't be possible. From the Biki: createAgent scripting command. I think rocket was saying that from the standpoint of dayz it would be even better and more efficient if players were also not treated as regular units. Right now, ARMA does some funky, irritating stuff at times with player units just because it assumes that they are soldiers fighting in a war zone. Notice, how every player has to be assigned to the BLUFOR side at game start, for instance. Stuff like that is annoying and an uneccessary overhead from a design standpoint. Edit: While I'm at it, has anybody posted Part Two of the Interview yet? Mostly A3 related, but still some very exciting stuff talked about. This in particular made me squeal like a pre-pubescent fanboy: -

What? You mean every last one of them didn't have NVGs, silenced M4s and 10 STANAG SD mags each? Hmm, sounds potentially legit. Also, I've yet to see a stream that wasn't in practice a bandit stream. -

Yesssss... indeed.... everything continues according to plan. And, the best part? Because the majority of players (respawns) in the most frequently trafficked areas of the game (the coast) will no longer be armed, the murder rates will decrease significantly. People with no understanding of statistics and their misuses will hail the new mechanic as brilliantly successful.

Can we make a fresh start? No. Fanboys kept telling everybody else to go fuck themselves for weeks now. So we did. Kthxbye. I only continue to lurk here for the delicious tears. Also, thinking that these forum debates have any impact upon the development of this game is laughable. The only influence any of us have is when we vote with our wallets and our feet. In that sense, the fanboys have always had it right: if you don't like the game, stop fucking playing it. That's the only message that will ever be heard (and even then don't hold your breath expecting rocket to care). -

I know. I've said this repeately from the start. And, it's not just the nighttime that suffers with these new tonal changes. Daytime in A2 is now also looking worse than ever. And by worse, I mean increasingly unrealistic. -

Not until A2:CO falls off the first page of Steam's top sellers list, LDO. Might be worth waiting for the Steam Summer Sale, but I would be very surprised if we'll see a 50% discount anytime soon. -
