Haha, I used to live on 100 acres in similar country to Chernarus. I used to walk around at night with 5x better visibility than this latest beta patch. We also had thick forestry, which was a lot darker than the open plains, but still nothing like this. I had a blowgun that I could reliably hunt small game with, AND retreive the missed darts. All under the stars. Yes, it was harder without the moon, but still, nothing like this patch. The way it WAS (at roughly 75% gam/brightness, 100% was a bit OTT), was fine. Now it's just dumb. Also, I'm a photographer for a living, I know light better than most. I do star trails here and there and there is a surprising amount of light once your eyes adjust.

This is the first beta I've put on (I like the humourous anecdotes and nubcomments from side chat) to see how bad they fucked the nights, took it right off. It's gonna suck when it's compulsory :/

The game is still great. I love the PvP aspect, the entire atmosphere of the game. I personally think it should be harder. I'm amazed people kill for beans, like they're hard to find or anything. I've got about 5 in my bag, wasn't even looking for them. I'm not normally one to bitch about the game re: it being "hardcore", but this is just beyond realism (I know it's not 100% realistic about everything and never will be but that's why they changed the brightness) to the point of unrealistic. It was more believable, and playable before. Now you may as well put on a fucking blindfold. -
You'll get kicked by Battleye if the server hasn't updated for the latest one. I found one (look in the server list) that supports the 93825 patch. It's stupid dark. Sigh, daytime again for me.

Got the latest beta patch, it is RIDICULOUSLY (yes, all caps-worthy) dark. Love this mod, but this is just OTT. There's no reason to make it this dark, RL isn't close to this dark. Why don't we just add a blindfold to your starting equipment, and you can only take it off if you get to the NWAF to get a key for it. Whoever made the decision to make the nights this dark needs to go camping more often. -
Hah, just got the beta patch, what a waste of time. The night is still unbelievably stupid. Don't fix what ain't broke :(
-
Oh so it's not super unrealistic darkness?

Sigh, the darkness in the beta patch is retarded. If you want a hardcore experience, turn your brightness all the way down, even in the day. Then you can be as 1337 ub3r hardc0r3 as you fucking want. Turn your monitor off, then you can be SUPER hardcore. If you want a realistic experience, or at least a suspension of disbelief which I believe this game was going for, make the highest (well, slightly below, around 75%) gamma/brightness before the patch the DEFAULT brightness on night servers. Because that's actually what night is more like. ANYONE who grew up in the country knows this. It's not some retarded affair where it's just pitch black without artificial lighting. INB4 hardcorewhiners, my current life is on 17 days with 260 zed kills, and I can deal with the darkness just fine, I'd just prefer not have unrealistic changes take over under the pretense of "realism". -
Gamma and brightness
mind_grenade replied to kstone588 (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Whoever did the night obviously lives in a city where it's extremely dark outside of the city outskirts at night from light pollution. If you've frequented the nights in countryside similar to Chernarus, you'll know it can be almost as bright as the day when there's a good moon, and still good visibility even when there is none. And there is NO light pollution in Chernarus. I think the nights with gamma/brightness way up made the nights more realistic than without.... -
Sooooo I've been playing for 45 hrs now, current life is on 215 kills and 15 days. I see my first vehicle (Hilux) between two towns. I'm on my way. Yellow chain. Red chain. No message received. FUCK YOU MR SERVER.

Scratch that, rejoined (was unsaved for about 15 minutes in which I had a whole bunch of loot but annnnnnnnnyway), went back to it, it's perfectly functional, had an M16, bunch of ammo, 3 full jerry cans, fully functional, bunch of raw meat, bunch of stuff :P Whoevers Hilux that was between Stary and Novy; thanks :) I'll park it outside Kabanino barn when I'm done with it. -
How DayZ TDM/CoD Can Be Gone With 2 Quick Fixes

Doesn't need fixing. Forums do though, full of knowitalls that think PKing is a problem PROTIP: STAY AWAY FROM CHERNO/ELEKTRO -
How many bandits did you claim before the change?
mind_grenade posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
So with the bandit skin being removed, it's much harder to hunt the hunters so I, for one, will not be doing many PK's any further. But before the change, when we could see the guilty; how many did you claim? I found them to be the finest game in Chernarus <3 I got about 30. Not sure on the total. Great feeling to take down the spawn camping ones! The last one I did get though, I was on a fresh life, he looted the barn I was going for and I followed him for about 20 minutes (thrill is in the chase, after all), took him down and he had an ALICE pack full of almost everything. I <3 bandits, sad to see them go :( -

Agreed, nothing better than playing vigilante on the coast and stalking some of the spawn camping bandits. They are pretty low. I mean, PK'ing in Cherno/Elektro, totally on, it's all fair game. But fresh spawns? Come on, get a grip. -
Did crossbows get nerfed in 1.6 patch?
mind_grenade replied to LeYuno (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Sad, it was a valid weapon beforehand, now, especially with how buggy the bolt retrieval is it's just useless. Oh wellz, back to the Winny then ;P -
Is there somewhere that matches spawn more than other places? I've only seen one, and that was on my previous life. I've got a Czech pack with enough to get me through WW Zed in it at the mo' (about 6 cans of beans, here's hoping I don't get shot), 4K blood and about 6 "raw meat"s, wood is everywhere, but no matches!!!! : / I've barnhopped (probably about 9 in total) from the east coast to the NW airfield, through Stary Sobor and it's supermarket, hitting deer stands (~12) and stables and misc buildings along the way and back down directly south to Bor just North of Chernogorsk, and now just outside of Cherno and I haven't seen ONE stinking box yet. Hell I raided ALL the hangars at NW, TWICE, the fire station there and the comms tower. NOTHING. Just want to cook ma' damn meat.

Yes, my lad, one of the sneaky fuckers even followed me in (his mistake, bolt to the head :D). Probably about 10-15 I eyeballed on my entry to the South side of Zeleno. Oh, there was an ALICE (thank god!! more than Czech) pack in the back room, but nothing else at all, not even any tin cans. Ok, nevermind I just made it to the church, I thought I could get in but the doors didn't open and I had one after me : / died. 6 hours of gameplay, 9 cans of beans, 10 mak mags, compass, knife ALICE pack, AK + 3 mags, all gone. Sigh. Should've checked it was enterable :/
-
Just checked the general store at Zeleno, 100% empty. Absolutely nothing in it : / Will hit church and the pub in north Zeleno later on :P
-
I'm at Bor, I'll just head NNW 'till I hit Zeleno, smack the church and general store while I'm there :) I didn't know it had a church, I just went direct south through the forest and past the big tower Thanks heaps guys :D cook me up some meat and hold it in a forest for a while :P
-
Thanks! I haven't seen one of those offices, do you happen to know which town they're in? Or just the big cities? I'm near Zeleno atm
-
Ahhhh, ok , thanks for that. I've typically avoided residential areas for safety and just stuck to barns, supermarkets and deer stands (easier to loot, good stuff in them :P) with the occasional building. I've got practically everything else except NVG's :P That said, the one box I did see was in a barn : /

I just recently chanced a crossbow (wanted to for a while but was enjoying the Winny and CZ too much). I LOVE IT! Great weapon, I love stealth in any game and crawling to a zed and dropping 6-7 around a barn before looting it is immensely fun for me :P I love sneaking and stealth in any game I play What I don't love is the random disappearing of bolts from bodies :( is this intentional? Sometimes they are just *poof* gone. Leaving me defenseless (other than my 9 Makarov mags haha)... Does anyone know a way of getting around this? It seems like it's due to hitting the centre/torso and getting "stuck" under the body.. I tried hiding but it didn't work, it was just gone :/ I did a fair amount of practise in a barn to get the iron sights down pat, and never lost one. What *would* be great to see would be a system where it's added to the inventory of the dead zed/player. Unless it's intentional, in which case it would be disappointing as it's not very realistic given that's the nature of the mod, but I'd accept it. So is it a bug, or intentional?

Steel bolts and taking them
mind_grenade replied to mind_grenade's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
This, I like :) Or just launch cans as is. -
I'm still green at this fantastic mod but I finally had my first good run-in with some bandits tonight :P Some fantastic gentleman killed me freshly after I acquired my CZ from a barn North of Elektro, near the power plant. I (foolishly) saluted, he opened fire, claimed I was "stalking" him. I was fortunate enough to respawn at the power plant, of all places, and hunted him for an easy kill while he was looting my corpse (oh Karma, you sweet beast). I restocked, I found a gang of stragglers in the same barn I got my CZ from. Gave a guy a transfusion and we set off. They wanted to go to the coast (don't know why) so I followed, curious. They attracted some zombies because they were throwing flares everywhere, so I hung out of the perimeter of them and their nublights, but kept moving with them. I got DC'd and rejoined another server that was light. I was on the coast, now alone, I set off to a nearby lighthouse on the hill. On my way I spied a bandit looting a survivors' corpse on the coast. I stalked him, and dropped him with a headshot from the pistol. He had an AK. It was my AK now. I got to the tower, climbed up to do some recon. A bandit, headed my way, looked like was stalking fresh survivors. So I watched for a minute or two, and as he got close I climbed down. I stalked, then I dropped him. Sweet, sweet beans. Moved to a nearby town, chose between a Whinny and a crossbow (took the whinny, haven't tried it yet, Iknowright. 14 hours of gameplay and I've only had an AK, after 4 barns and 6 deer stands this was the first time I encountered a different weapon. Always empty cans). Heard gunshots, moved to a field nearby to scout. Whilst prone, I heard a crossbow bolt whiz by. I scanned the treeline behind me and I saw a startled bandit stand up and run through the forest he was in. I followed. I ran into the forest, and as I did so I saw him darting through trees like a scared animal. I got to the top of the hill and spied him running down like a coward. I ran almost halfway down after him, waited till I was close enough and until I caught breath to aim for the shot, and I crouched down. He was about 80 meters away. I lined up the sights on my Winchester, took a deep breath in real life (ha!) and with the first ever shot from a Winchester for me, straight down through the trees and through his head (watched my headshot counter :D), I watched him crumble at the bottom of the hill. This current character is still alive in a barn somewhere :D I have the taste of bandit blood, and it is sweet. They are probably the finest game in Chernarus. I am only green but now I have a feel for the guns and ballistics, which has been my only failing with bandits previously, as I hadn't had a chance to get a shot off for not wanting to kill. Can't wait to bring it north. Such a satisfying few hours, especially after I lost my last two chars to bugs : / Crouched in a building and suddenly my leg broke. Tealdeer (it's meant to be long <3 ): hunted some bandits, was fun. Just another story as to why this game is awesome :P
