  1. What do you mean, "You people?" Sorry, couldn't resist. Getting on topic though, the rules are pretty draconian, there's no arguing that, but honestly it's up to individual people to decide whether or not those rules are worth the privilege of renting a server. Personally I'm perfectly content playing on other people's servers, others want the privilege of administrating their own servers. I certainly think there is room for discussion on this, but I suspect that these rules are only in place to keep problems at a minimum while they work on higher priority issues like certain game-breaking bugs that popped up in the most recent patch.
  2. I clicked on this link thinking it was going to be another whine thread about how the game is broken (Why yes, I am a masochist, how did you know?) I can honestly say I am happy to have been completely wrong. Everything you've said here I absolutely agree with, and thus, I give you the highest praise I can on these forums, a can of beans. The Survivor's Toast, to a post well done! :beans: Huzzah! :beans:

    Should this be called fun?

I hate to repeat the same mantra, but they are right, you're playing the wrong game. DayZ is about surviving the collapse of civilization, this isn't Call of Duty or Battlefield where you are a highly trained soldier fighting for some vaguely defined but totally patriotic goal. You are an average person thrust into one of the most extreme situations a person can endure, and you have one simple goal: survive. The PvP in this game is intended, it's part of the survival element, where you cannot trust anyone, and even your closest friend might blow your brains out for a spare can of beans if he's hungry enough. This game is humanity stripped down to its disgusting, savage, purest soul. In fact, I don't think 'fun' is the correct word for a game like DayZ... Because there are incredibly long stretches where I am stressed, terrified, angry, upset, and ocassionally bored, but fun is a rarity. I would call this game rewarding. The first time I outsmarted a man bent on killing me, that exact moment when I knew I had the upper hand, and his life was in my hands, that was a rush I'll never forget. Or that churning in my gut as I make that decision, to shoot someone or not. These aren't fun, but when I lay in bed that night, and think about what those events say about who I am, well that's a reward that Black Ops can't even hold a candle to. I guess my point is, this isn't Captain Shooty McShooterman's Team Deathmatch Extravaganza. And if that's what you signed on for, my friend, the door is that way. This game is meant to be hard, gruelling, and upsetting. As the saying which is a lot older than me goes: If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

    Vehicles: For or against them?

I'm in favour of vehicles being implemented, but I want them to be something you have to -work- for. No going for a Sunday stroll with an engine in your back pocket like the Mod. I would love to see Engine parts like radiators, alternators, carburettors (did I spell that right?), and Batteries in varied conditions that require upkeep and maintenance to keep the vehicle running.

    Where to kill yourself?

Electro is about a 10 minute run from both of your spawns, just meet there. Now if one of you had a broken leg... Well I spent a night dragging my ass to Cherno back in the mod, so my Avatar is speaking my advice for you. Translation: Deal with it.
  6. Couldn't find any other topics about this, so sorry if it has been posted before, but I came across something intriguing today, and thought I had best share. As my squad's designated medic, it occurred to me that with the saline nerf incoming, I had best start practising with blood bags so I'm not stuck fumbling when my team mates go down. To this end, I've been playing doctor with my squad figuring out blood types and compatibility, and the best way to not accidentally kill my friends. This is where I ran into a snag. On a hunch, I tested myself again today, and while two days ago, on the same server, and the same character, I was B+, now I'm O+. I haven't found another test kit yet to see whether or not anyone else's, or the bag I took back then has changed randomly, but this is distressing news regardless. What this essentially means is that, despite all my careful preparation. My first aid load-out is essentially useless as I'm going to have to lug around a bucket of blood testers alongside my other supplies just so I don't accidentally fill my mate up with his own blood only to find out it's now magically incompatible. The problem here is that I find myself torn. I'm fairly certain blood types aren't supposed to change (Although I sure hope they are randomized at respawn,) but now I have an added level of intricacy to my craft, and that is awesome. Blood testers are something I never seem to find, and they are single use, which means their value to me suddenly went through the roof, this excites the collector in me, while at the same time adding an extra layer of stress and adrenaline when I get in a tight spot, as I -really- don't want to lose the stuff in my bags. In short, I'm fairly certain this is a bug which may need fixing, but part of me likes it, and this bug is making this medic's life far more interesting. For discussion value, has anyone else come across this? Perhaps someone out there has harder evidence than my anecdote of "This one time, in Novy Sobor."

Do you get color back from Health Regen?

I'd like to direct you to this thread made by Merino of the Trusted Medics of the Wasteland. In it he has several videos on your vital statistics, and how to stay healthy after the end of the world. He's put a lot a lot of effort into them, and they've saved my life countless times.

    Changing/inconsistent bloodtypes

This is interesting, this means that the bug might not be universal. I will confess my tests of this have been extremely limited in scope, only testing myself twice, with a lot of possible variables mixed in. What I can confirm, from my own handwritten notes, is that over a period of several days, my character's blood type changed from B+ to O+, And that I have not died in that time. Unless damaged blood testers give off false readings (Which would be awesome, come to think of it, that should be a thing if it isn't) there is no way that I am aware of in which the fault may lay with me. What your tale tells me, is that the change is triggered by something, an event or specific criteria, which I triggered, but you did not. sadly, I have too little information to go on right now to even begin to form a hypothesis on what could cause it. As I said earlier though, I am continuing my tests, and hopefully I'll find out more to post here in the future, Hopefully Berezino is quiet tonight, I need to find more test kits. Zedicologist, on 20 Jan 2014 - 10:37 PM, said:well i will have to try this out. Hopefully this gets figured out pretty soon cause that would suck. You'll have to tell me what you find out,the more information we gather on the bug, the easier it'll be for the Devs to find and fix it.

    Changing/inconsistent bloodtypes

I reported it last night. Made the forum post first though, I wanted to get some confirmation that this was actually a thing happening and not just me being crazy. Thanks for the tip anyway though.
  10. I see a lot of negativity on the forums, people who complain about bandits, murderers (Yes there's a difference), bugs, incomplete features, and of course everyone's favourite, third person or first person. While none of these complaints are invalid, and some raise good points, I felt like a change of pace, so here's a tale of myself and friend taking a long romantic stroll down the coast of Chernarus, and the people we met along the way. We started in Berezino. My friend had just died from, natural causes. That of course meaning we have no idea, he just woke up on the coast. So I hiked out to him from where we'd made camp the night before. Before I arrived, he had his first encounter of the many we had this evening. A man with a motorcycle helmet, whom I'll call Steve, and an axe greeted him warmly, and quite contrary to our expectations, actually helped him find some water and food. We met Steve one more time in Berezino as we finished gearing up my friend, and he's a really cool dude. After parting ways with Steve one last time, we decided to search some apartment buildings, they never have anything good, but the roof offers a lovely view, so we decided to give it a try. On the top floor we were surprised by a man I'll call Dan. Dan was a very friendly guy who talked with us briefly while attempting to climb a ladder, but the ladder had other ideas, and poor Dan didn't survive them. So we gathered an M4 and some other supplies from his body before we came upon a lovely idea. This idea was to take a long stroll from Berezino to Elektro, finding new spawns and giving them a much more friendly greeting than Chernarus usually gives them. I had a backpack full to bursting with food, medical supplies, and soda, so we set off on our adventure, fully expecting to be rewarded for efforts with a face full of lead. We couldn't have been more wrong. Just outside of Nizhnoye we met our first new citizen of Chernarus, a young woman I'll call Stacy, in a bright red T-shirt who reacted to the sight of two very heavily armed individuals as you would expect, with absolute terror. We tried to assure her we meant no harm, and even offered her some food and supplies, but she ended up going off on her own. Oh well, onward, to the next town! We ended up bumping into Stacy several times along the coast, turns out she was running in the same direction we were. And she actually met the next guys before we did. These guys were far more heavily armed than Stacy, and immediately upon spotting us, retreated into a house. Suspecting the worst, we drew our own weapons and closed in. My friend conversed with them from outside the house while I scoured the perimeter. Once both of our groups convinced each other that no ill intent was meant, they came outside, and we exchanged gossip and some medical supplies. Turns out they were just waiting for a friend to meet up with them, and once he got there, we went our separate ways. After the Three Amigos left our company, we had an uneventful walk the rest of the way to Elektro. When we entered the fabled city, we fully expected this to be the end of our adventure, I recall vividly the hell hole the mod made of this once fair city, so imagine my surprise when I found, on a 38/40 server, Elektro being a ghost town. We wandered the uncannily quiet streets for a while, and decided to stop for a break outside the cathedral. And that's where our first and only bandit of the night opened fire. as .556 shells landed all around us, I did the smart thing, and advanced in the other direction. After getting into cover and bandaging myself, I tried to hunt down this would be attacker to repay the favour, but it seems that, like the morning mist in Otmel, he had vanished into thin air. After a brief search, we decided to move on, and this is where our story ends for now, as it was getting late, and my finger was tired from holding "W" that long. In short, we met a total of seven people on our journey, and only one singular man was unfriendly to us. So to everyone out there who just can't seem to catch a break, and all they find are KoS psychos and wannabe bandits, keep your chin up. I wish I'd thought to take pictures of our epic trek, but nevertheless, there are good people left in this rotten world, you just have to keep searching. Also, having a fully kitted M4 tends to improve people's relations with you greatly, though I can't possibly understand why.

Am I naive in wanting to learn the map myself?

Not at all. As someone who uses an online map, I respect people who have the patience to learn the map properly. You'll have bragging rights over guys like me when you say "Yeah, I learned this country the hard way." As a side note, I've found at this point, I generally only use the map to translate the darned street signs into a language I can read so I know where I am. Also with the Standalone came subtle changes, and this time, I am trying to learn the map properly, though I'll admit I still will look up the map when I get thoroughly lost (Which happens more often than I admit, but don't tell my squadmates, as far as they know, every detour was entirely part of my cunning plan!)
  12. Yeah... Don't waste valuable morphine on a simple infection. Painkillers, or Alcohol Tincture will cure it just as well, and you won't run the risk of finding yourself with a broken leg 6km from a hospital and no way to fix it because of a little itch you had an hour ago.
  13. From my own experience, the complaining comes from infected wounds. Use Alcohol Tincture on yourself, and don't panic about the "Sick" message you'll get on your Inventory screen, Your character should stop whining and you'll see "My wounds hurt less" for a few minutes until it fades away.
  14. Date/Time: 10:00 GMT September 26, 2012 What Happened: I should have died, but instead the bandit wasted nearly three clips before I logged and I came back alive (details below) Where was I: Just West of Cherno, roughly around grid 058127 What was I doing: I was leaving Cherno as I came under fire from a bandit Current Installed Version: 1.7.2.6 Server: US 634 System Specs: Gateway NV75S03h; AMD Quad-core A8-3500M, AMD Radeon HD 6740G2 (1gb VRAM); 8gb DDR3 Memory Timeline: I was leaving Cherno after having a few close calls with players in the city, when I came under fire on the outskirts of the city, my FPS suddenly dropped to about 2 fps, so I decided to try and run. Whomever was pursuing me shot me several times, but my blood didn't drop, on about the third or fourth hit, my leg broke, however I didn't collapse, and was able to keep running another 100m or so, the whole time thinking to myself how pissed I'd be in the other guy's shoes, so finally I decided that it wasn't fair, as he'd put at least thirty rounds into me, and used up way more, and I turned to face him, I tried to fire my weapon, but it wouldn't fire, and after another dozen shots or so, I finally collapsed, dead. But not really, I was laying on the ground, but I never got the scoreboard, or the "You Are Dead" screen. I let myself lie there (The bandit chasing me stood there putting rounds into me the whole time) for about two minutes before giving up and aborting. When I logged back into another server to see if I was actually dead, I was merely bleeding and unconscious, but still at full blood. Dunno if anyone else has had this bug, but it was sure a weird way to start the night.
  15. Server: US2255 Time: Between 1300 and 1400 GMT Name: NO MOMMY Description of Incident: At around 0500 PST (1300 GMT), My friend Datharian and I embarked from our camp in our UAZ (Red) with the intent of raiding the Northwest Airfield, seeing as it was night with a full moon, and only one other player on the server, we figured this would be the best time. Barely a kilometre from our camp, passing through a small town we noticed zombies had spawned, indicating a player was nearby as when you are in a vehicle you don't spawn them. As we weren't looking to engage a player so close to our encampment, we retreated, taking a circuitous route away from our camp, hoping that, should he pursue us, he wouldn't find the camp. We continued towards our original objective, worried about our camp, but relieved that the only other player on the server at the time was miles away from the airfield. When we reached the airfield, our plan was simple, Datharian would drop me off at the Northeastern gate, and continue through and do a circuit of the airfield and the surrounding area, checking for zombie spawns that would indicate a player was nearby, while I looted the Airfield itself, in this way we hoped to draw any undesirable attention away from myself. I hit the northernmost barrack first, then continued south towards the firehall, it was as I reached the firehall that I came under fire from a silenced weapon at close range, I tried to pull away to a better position but as I rounded a corner a single shot landed and broke my leg, and then a grenade finished me off. I told Datharian what had happened, and he, in the car, fled south, putting distance between himself and the airfield, he drove for about five minutes along the main roads while I respawned and we tried to coordinate a rendezvous. He had gotten turned around and ended up in Pulkovo, where he was attempting to turn around to come to Elektro where I had respawned. As he was moving around the back of a house, the same player who had killed me drove up on a quad, parked in front of Dath's car, moved to the passenger side and unloaded a single clip from a silenced handgun into the hood, causing the vehicle to explode and kill Datharian. It was not until after that we realized how suspicious these actions were. For each of these incidents, being close to the camp of the only players online, coming upon that same player in the Airfield, and hunting a car with an ATV, are innocent by themselves, but together, executed by the same person, we were the only three on the server for the entire stretch, paints a very suspicious picture of “NO MOMMY,” as in order to pull this off, he would have had to spot our vehicle turning around and leaving the town he was in, then either track us across open terrain, or work out where we were going, then meet me at the airfield, and after killing me, leave the airfield completely and go chasing after a vehicle which had left the airfield more than five minutes before my death, and somehow find it on a little side road going nowhere near to the route we'd taken arriving at the airfield. As the word of myself and Datharian is the only proof I can offer, I do not ask that this person be banned, but proof or not, I feel it is important that I say what I have so that admins and other players can be forewarned to watch this person more closely.
  16. Actually Thomas might be onto something here, suppressed .22 LR guns were standard issue to both Isreali soldiers and US Navy SEALS during the '90's, (Isreal used a rifle for riot control, but stopped after the weapon proved to be more lethal than expected, while the SEALS used a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruger_MK_II]Ruger MK II) It's a common weapon used by both pest control officers, who quite commonly use suppressed variants for dispatching pest or dangerous animals without causing undue alarm, and can still be found used by some police snipers thanks to the low recoil and low volume making it ideal for urban environments. .22 rifles are generally accurate out to 100m, with the pistols generally topping out at 70m. The practical ranges tend to be less, as the light weight of the cartridge causes a slight inaccuracy as the bullet drops from supersonic to subsonic speeds at the far end of it's range. This is present in any weapon, but can tend to be more noticable in the lighter rounds. As the .22 is a popular target/pest control/small game gun, that uses inexpensive cartridges that are both very light and sold in large boxes containing 50 or more bullets, the .22 could be a very good weapon to include alongside the makarov as the ammo would be just as, if not more common. In game terms what this would translate to is a another "Tier 0" weapon, a beginners gun that is incredibly common and very hard to run out of ammo for, but is crap for PvP due to very low stopping power and not accurate for long range shooting. The quiet shot, abundance of ammo, and the ability for it to come in a slightly (4X at most) scoped rifle, would make the .22 an excellent zombie killing weapon as when you are facing them, you generally try to aim for the head anyways to conserve ammo. Because of the minimal penetration of a .22, damage in game terms would be limited to 500-600 blood, and bullet drop should match the ranges above. I think this would be a good thing to have in the standalone as the current gun selection is really limited on 'civilian' weapons, especially when it comes to primary weapons, which creates a niche for a quiet, low damage weapon for people looking to take out zeds without attracting too much attention.
  17. Completely off topic here, but I've said my piece already and I just want you to know sir, you get my beans for an awesome signature.

    ARMA 2 SMK Animations

by Thor's Hammer these in DayZ would rock! Hell that grenade lob/roll would have saved me from two different firefights already.
  19. You know, I came in here expecting another "Here we go again" thread, but actually you are raising a legitimate, if personal, concern. I don't mind the sniper rifles in the game, maybe drop the AS50 because we already have an anti material rifle with the M107 and dropping the AS50 would make the incredibly powerful guns rarer, But I have yet to be killed by any sniper (Though one did break my leg at 1,100m, I wish I'd have had side chat to congratulate him.) I like to think it's just because I'm freaking amazing and can dodge bullets like Neo, but really I think it's just because people are so used to arcade shooters that they just plain suck with marksman weapons in this game. And on that note, I am totally in favour of making sniping even more realistic, because I can't use snipers anyway, so anything that gives me even more of an edge against them gets my beans. What should be removed is the damn L85 Thermal. That gun completely removes the element of stealth from the game because any idiot can now sweep their surroundings in half a second and instantly identify threats over a kilometre away. Perhaps when duping and scripting is fixed with the standalone, the gun will be rare enough to not be a reliable advantage, but right now it seems like every second kill I get / see (I watch a lot of Youtube) the bugger is decked out in full kit with an L85 and an AS50,

    Thank you everyone! (Channel announcment!)

    Don't mind the spam bot.
  21. I've posted in other threads my thoughts about night time in DayZ, so I won't waste time here and I'll just say that I hope the lighting at night is fixed for the standalone.

FN FAL the best all rounder?

I would love the FN FAL except for one thing, that damn aperture sight. I know it's just a personal thing, but I hate that sight (same as the M16/M4 variants), I just find it awkward when matched up to something intuitive like the AK sights, or the G17

    Barbed Wire Gone 2 Far

These are why, whenever I go into an area, I -specifically- go out of my way to cut down any and all Barbed Wire, Tank Traps, or Sandbags I come across. I may only be one person, doing what little he can, but I like to think I make someone happy when they come back to an area, after it being blockaded, to find all the barricades torn apart by their friendly neighbourhood Engineer! So if you see Valanthe on your server, and you need some wire removed, give me a salute and wave me over, that M4 on my back is for self defense only.

    worst first impressions on dayz

I can sympathise, this game will punish you for the slightest mistake. And the local population doesn't make it any easier. That said, if you take these deaths as an opportunity to learn, the game can be rewarding. Start out on low population servers, I find plenty that have less than five these days, and I can go weeks without running into another person, which is fine by me because frankly I'm tired of those meetings always going the same way: "Yo, I'm friend-" BANG "sigh." These days, I go to great lengths to avoid other players, how to avoid them was something that took a lot of trial and error to perfect, and I still make mistakes, all I can say is keep at it, and learn from those mistakes, and eventually you'll find yourself in the shoes of many of those bandits, loaded out with gear, zombies aren't a threat, and now you're bored..

    How to play the tutorial?

For the basic controls, use the Operation Arrowhead tutorials, they are -far- more forgiving and helpful than the classic Arma 2 one.
