DayZ Alpha won't launch until launched !
Roark92 replied to [email protected]'s topic in Mod Announcements & Info
i didnt mean to sound self entitled or bitter or anything (i realize that i did now lol). i just understand why people are so confused by this development team. i personally am not even waiting for standalone. its something to look forward to when it releases but im not holding my breath for it, and neither should anyone else. however, another good example is how they said weekly devblogs. devblogs come MAYBE once a month and even then they are usually half assed. and i AM counting things like rezzed and interviews and stuff. thats just a good example of saying something they shouldnt have said since they had no intention of doing weekly devblogs. if they said "we might do devblogs occasionally but probably not" then people wont get confused when weekly blogs arent rolling out! besides, weekly devblogs is quite ambitious! i wouldnt even expect them to do that since its a lot of work! its common sense really... say what needs to be said and dont speculate on your own intentions... its a shame that there is bitterness though because i think rocket's (and the team's) heart is in the right place and i wish him the best with the development and release. the expectation comes with the fame i suppose. -

i dont get why anarchybrownies cant understand that people are confused. I will start by saying that I personally do not care when it is released, but stop pretending like rocket doesnt trip over his words every dev blog/interview. He says things like "release right around the corner" or, "we just finished x, and now we are ready to release so it should be anytime now", or "large scale alpha testing will be out imminently." or just mentioning dates or time frames that shouldnt be mentioned at all since they arent relevant to release. He doesnt need to say july 15th to make people think release is coming. its all in his wording and he DOES dangle the carrot from our heads. so stop pretending like its so obvious what rocket means or intends, because it isnt. The standalone has been the most convoluted development I have ever heard of. I am not saying its rockets fault or that he intends to confuse and dismay everyone. I am however saying that is unintentionally exactly what he does. they are obviously anxious about releasing it without a shitload of new shit because they fear that people will say "we waited all that time for a slightly altered mod?" if i was on the dev team i would be thinking that. i mean you cant SEE server architecture changes so to the public it appears that the game has barely changed except for motorbike helmets... i will say that when i saw the demo, it was gut wrenching to watch those stupid ass zombies STILL glitching around and being utterly useless. not to mention 100 times sillier now that they can fly around (apparently supposed to be jump attacking)... so i dont blame them for their hesitation. -
E3 Expo - June 2013 - Interviews and Gameplay
Roark92 replied to SmashT's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
THIS is what i meant when i was "complaining". i think they are doing a great job and i am understanding of the games development state and what to expect from it. what i fear is what smash said, and that arma just cant do the zombies and never will. if they could fix it a year from now then id be fine but if they simply cant... hmm that would not be good. the animations look weird i agree, but im thinking that may just be because they are new and foreign looking so the seem "off" from what we are used to. crosshair is super lame. not how it looks just that its there. my heart sank a little when i saw that. fingers crossed that its temporary! -

when i refer to fanboys not being able to take criticism i mean that they are choosing to ignore blatant facts. like they will say how great it is and completely pretend that all the buggy nonsense isnt there. i am fine with my opinion being challenged, just so long as everyone here is objective and not making it into a team contest of "game is amazing and flawless la la la" vs "game is shit, BS, not buying wah wah wah" but im hopeful of being proven wrong as the game develops! -
E3 Expo - June 2013 - Interviews and Gameplay
Roark92 replied to SmashT's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
yeah i was watching those videos and all i was thinking was "arma 2 dayz mod" and i get that its alpha and all that, but still, watching the zombies in those videos... they are even WORSE now than in the mod, since they are literally flying through the air all over the place. i understand that that can be fixed but still, the zombies have lost none of their bugginess and its painful to see no progress at all in that regard. i mean they straight up just dont work... at all. for awhile now ive noticed that the bike helmets get the spotlight all the time. they are cool sure, but not as cool as zombies that arent utterly retarded and laughably buggy. i appreciate that the structure has been changed to that of an MMO, and that is huge. but still just sooooooo buggy i feel as though its just a result of building it off of arma and it will be that way regardless of the effort the devs put into it. a million new items and crafting recipes cant make me ignore the crippling buggyness and clumsiness, i wish it could. not trying to be a downer, just being realistic. and f**k all the fanboys who cant take criticism. i REALLY hope it gets better! only time will tell. -
Is using teamspeak 'cheating'?
Roark92 replied to Maloney (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
first of all game would be way more fun if no one used teamspeak and there was a really well designed in game com system. and it is an exploit, it maneuvers around a game mechanic that is design to limit the player... its an exploit because it takes a chunk of the game design and shoves it into obsolescence... it slaps the devs in the face when they spent time designing an in game com system that would be usable according to rules and sensible limitations such as distance and player-consciousness. just because the majority believes something, doesnt mean it is the truth. blatantly obvious that its exploitative, don't know how one can believe otherwise... -
Is using teamspeak 'cheating'?
Roark92 replied to Maloney (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
i dont really know why everyone has such a solid definition of "cheating" already set in their minds. its a broad term. you cant say that just because the advantage is available to all that it isnt cheating... that argument is so absurd it amazes me so many people agree with it... "cheating" CAN be done by anyone... harder for some, easier for others, impossible to none... any one of us can rob a bank (successfully or not), or hack a dayz server... so how can anyone claim that an option being universal makes it morally or socially acceptable? just because we are all capable of killing those we disagree with, and in spite of possible moral objections we ALL still are capable, means its ok for us to do so? i dont even disagree that it isnt cheating, because its too vague a term to describe a thing like this. id say its more a culture, gaming culture supports the use of 3rd party voice programs so no we dont consider it cheating... it can go either way in a society though so i think some of these points should be considered a bit more before being cemented into the ground as "fact". I think OP used the wrong word for sure. they meant to say exploitative. being able to magically communicate with someone 200 km away with no radio or speak loudly 5 feet from 2 people and have only one of them hear you is absolutely ridiculous, im sure everyone can agree on this. if radios are implemented well, we would all have a lot more fun not using 3rd party programs... but like smash said you cannot enforce something like that so i personally dont believe dedicating time to things like radio is even worth it, it will just be a novelty and take a backseat to the voice chat powers that be. -
Thought on nutrition, food, drinks, and survival in general.
Roark92 replied to Jeremiah Cross's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
really cool. im one of the people who feels that there is nothing that could make the game too "tedious" soo many people spend so much time making mods for games that do these things, because developers are too scared of tedium... meaning players have to take it upon themselves to deliver the content. im sure im not the only one here who plays/played skyrim with 100+ mods. it could be really intuitive if done right. also by giving simple items like coffee or tea values that are unique to them (as an example caffeine), you also open up a whole market of tradeable goods... since drinking coffee wouldnt be entirely superficial. that said im not very big on foods providing "bonuses" in a buffing sense... i think that is really artificial... when you drink coffee you dont get "15% more alertness for 2 hours"... you just feel more alert. so no flat out "heres your bonus from your coffee and heres its duration" stuff. in that sense becoming deficient could just be a subtle thing that you begin to notice before it actually impacts you. or could just increase infection rate. that removes tedium because it provides you with time to deal with it without the (eg) "shit i just became tired, i need to sleep to get rid of this 50% less melee damage" modifier that pops up instantly without warning and forces you to deal with it right then and there. but i am actually pretty confident that down the line in dayzSA development, into beta, these sorts of things will really start popping out and expanding the game. Rockets got it covered. -
yeah this is an awesome idea! but really only if cold has an actual effect on the player. honestly, exposure is probably the biggest danger in this scenario... shelter usually (depends on environment) comes before food when surviving so i think it would be really silly to not go in depth on the exposure mechanics of the game. cold should be able to kill you. it should really force you to do things you know are dangerous (like lighting a fire at night and welcoming bandits) if there is no danger from cold, then no one is going to have fires because they are just superficial and not worth the risk.

i kinda just wish that zombies would take over in RL, then we can all play dayz everyday and the immersion would be insane... not to mention the graphics...

DAYZ:SA Zombies becoming real threat - ideas
Roark92 replied to VooDooator's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
lol they are zombies. saying infected is so stupid its a waste of a post. maybe they were SUPPOSED to be infected when dean started, but its pretty obvious that they are now officially zombies. people infected with zombie-ism... zombies. we dont even know how threatening zombies will be when standalone comes out... why are people suggesting making them more threatening when no one knows how threatening they are to begin with? this isnt the mod anymore... -

one thing that bugs me about pvp whiners..
Roark92 replied to Rifle Eyez's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
some kind of base building or fortifying and therefore factions (player made/operated) would mitigate it i think. Theres no real political angle in dayz, no consequence. i think that is both an asset and a detriment to the game. i feel as though pointlessly slaying a member of a local faction and incurring the wrath of said faction would be a deterrent to aimless killing. with factions you could still have bands of merciless sociopaths, which is fine. but you could also give players a better way to DEAL with it, by banding together and opposing them. No one likes politics, but it drives civility, even between warring states. we have to cheat the system because as other people have said we all know that killing a player isnt KILLING a player. so we cant rely on morality and empathy like we do in RL. That said i LIKE the pvp part of the game, even if i get massacred out of nowhere for reasons beyond my understanding. but still, there has to be more to it than that. but i get that that is likely an unpopular design choice, and for some good reasons. I just would love to see things like area-specific resources that could be player (likely powerful factions) controlled and traded. think it would open up a whole bunch of possibilities socially. -
well the variety in itself is a reason to have all the guns... since more variety is better usually if not in excess. also some guns are just better than others, and this fact may or may not influence a players choice on which weapon to use. ultimately it will come down to the player what to use, and that is on a personal level, one that cannot be "factually" argued directly into the favor of your particular views. can't you accept that people have different preferences and that is good enough reason as any? everyone is providing lots of legitimate answers to you, you just seem to choose not to accept them.

ROCKET. Playing with friends question (Standalone)
Roark92 replied to djshauny1's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Wow. nicefish is right what the hell is wrong with this community? Stop ENTIRELY ignoring the point he is making just to appease your own views on whats right. Most of you act like some this is some covenant and that any suggestion contrary to popular belief is blasphemy. And ganging up on someone for stating their opinion openly (its called a forum for a reason) and belittling their ideas is shameful. He's making a god damn suggestion about something he feels the game could benefit from. He therefore can't be "wrong", but that doesn't make him "right" either. It's for discussion, not instant put downs and outright disrespect. He has been nothing but reasonable, and the thread he has made was legitimate and not inflammatory, so show some god damn respect and humility and get off your high horses. I won't say you all are unreasonable and rude, for that in itself would be unreasonable and rude, as well as untrue. But a concerning number of you evidently are. -
lawl at all the ridiculously health conscious people in this thread... smoking is bad we know but holy **** come on it isnt the devil incarnate. your char. spends his days running from building to building scrounging basic necessities in order to survive, when they arent looking over their shoulder at a train of 20 zombies they are dodging bullet fire from an unfriendly chap in a tower. do you HONESTLY believe that in this world... when a character FINALLY has a moment of peace to desperately try to reclaim the sanity that the day has stripped of them, that they will look at a pack of smokes and say, "oh no, id better not... those are habit-forming and i might not see my 75th birthday." no way, id add cigarettes onto my list of scroungables for sure. food, water, clothes, tools, cigs and booze. some say bad way to survive, i say theres more to surviving than just eating and shitting. one has to be able to find pleasure in it as well, however they can. (probably what breeds so many sociopathic bandits lol) to be honest i dont smoke, and i dont like too. but in this scenario i think id indulge from time to time for sure. EDIT: and about what it should "do" in game... probably nothing, play the animation and leave it at that. people will make good use of it socially anyways, no need to attach a hard stat to it.

Reduce artificial difficulty (randomness) and increase real difficulty in SA
Roark92 replied to _Anubis_ (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
it bothers me that so many people are blinded by their habit of defending this mod for no reason other than they think they should. not addressing half of the implications or intentions of posts just to strengthen their own arguments, when it should be a discussion. totally not attacking anyone but i see it all the time all over the forums especially in suggestions. the guy is right. however there SHOULD be these random inconveniences and dangers that can turn your world upside down, but the game should not RELY on them to provide the challenge, which it DOES. its a cheap trick, since it cant actually make zombies dangerous or make basic survival difficult. its not game-bashing its just the reality of it. so he seems right to me on at least half of it. as everyone here never ceases to talk about, "dayz is unforgiving and brutal blah blah" i could say the same thing about skyrim if i modded it so that your character has a chance to drop his weapon every 10 seconds. its moderation and balancing the events one can control and the events one can't that matters. lets be realistic here, its too buggy to even judge. take it at face value, and lets all reassess our positions with the standalone. -
DayZ: Most Private Hives Are Not Real DayZ
Roark92 replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
yeah hes right, cars should be bountiful, pretty much anywhere on the planet... and bikes should be more common than makarovs for gads sake. but the simple and elegant solution to this problem is to set the game like 5 or more years AFTER outbreak... then you can justify the fact that yeah there are a shitload of cars around, but none of them work anymore. so players would still have to fix them. also you legitimize the rarity of gasoline somewhat. (RIGHT after outbreak, fuel would also be abundant) so cars that need some new parts and a scarcity of fuel leads to it not mattering if there are 50 almost functioning cars in the streets. bikes though... bikes should be really common. the logic is solid as any rock ive ever seen... on par with the sedimentary variety id wager. yessir -
yeah honestly the mod is heavily flawed. but its not anyones fault and its really just a "thats how it is" scenario due to it being modded from a game with a different purpose. the game makes up for the bugs by having spurts of utter exhilaration. people say its a PvP game and others say its supposed to be more PvE, but to me its more like a player vs unknown. and thats what makes it so great, cuz you can never be sure about what will happen next, or the intentions of those around you. there is no "blue = friendly / red = enemy" but if i were you id just have waited for the standalone. its goina be effing fantastic. any day now!!!

are you trolling us now exogravis? lol "something is amidst" is incomplete, like you didnt get to finish what you were saying. "we are in the midst of something" might work, or "something is amidst us" but i think those are just statements... an idiom would be like "in the calm before the storm" also, not sure if "something is amiss" is even a saying, all i know of along those lines is "something is afoot". but its hard to determine what constitutes a "saying", i wont say for sure as i am but only a man. i am NOT a grammar nazi, but i want to contribute to the inevitable destruction of this innocent thread. amidst the battles of the grammar wars, none escape judgement...

ShannonZKiller - Jan 2013 - Interview/Livestream with Rocket
Roark92 replied to SmashT's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
too much speculation will leave us all mad. it is like the huge debate over the lighting in the comparison screens from rockets devblog the other day. pointless. rocket answered a question here, it wasnt a development report it was him answering a question without spending a full hour mulling over the implications of his wording (like you can do in a dev report). i have an uneasy sense that this will degrade into a "remove 3dp now / ill quit if 3dp is removed" argument. lol. i for one was most interested in the way clothing will impact inventory. the thought of having to rummage through a dead guys pants and jacket to see what he has is very intriguing to me. so long as items have volume! id hate to reach into someones pocket and find a jerry can.... haha -
Longest time you have stalked someone?
Roark92 replied to krihelion's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
haha yeah the good old suicide dive. a dayz classic. -
i totally get that people want to be able to see their character. i really like being able to see my character running around and stuff, it just is more interesting to watch than FPV. This will be especially true in SA with all the new clothing. but this is the STANDALONE we are talking about!! we are not limited to what we currently know to be our options within the mod! for example, in the mod if we remove 3dp then yes, you will never see your character. but how can we know this is true for the standalone? im certain it is not true in fact. there are a number of solutions that no one is realizing because you are all still living under the limitations of the mod. for example the inventory screen can display a 3D model of your character, rotatable. hell maybe the world can have a hell of a lot more reflections, off water and glass. mirrors perhaps? also no one has considered the possibility of a cinematic camera. i like third person for when im running around and not engaged in anything. a cinematic camera offers the view and style of 3DP, without any of the control. so in essence you see your character running, but you dont necessarily control the angle you view your character at. im thinking something like a GTA cinematic camera when you are driving. and yes if anyone has used the cin. camera in GTA you know that you crash into a wall after like 5 seconds haha. so to remedy that, why not put a small picture-in-picture window, that is in first person so you can still see where you are running and whats in front of you. I actually think something like that (that removes control but keeps the look) will settle it for a LOT of third person advocates, while removing the exploits mostly. i suppose technically the cin. cam would still let you see things you shouldnt, but it would be unpredictable and unreliable, so naturally people will not rely on it as a combat tool. Now... if SOMETHING like that does NOT appease or interest the 3dp advocate, then they simply want to be able to keep abusing the exploits associated with 3dp, likely because they fear the life they have built for themselves up on the rooftops with their sniper rifle will be jeopardized... in which case you should be offered no quarter and simply executed for your lack of reasonable argument and your participation in the sabotage of this game. all i know is that with no 3dp available tactics and maneuvers will flourish. groups that are organized and disciplined will triumph over those who arent. that is how it should be. how can anyone in their right mind say otherwise?
