People are flaming you because you played for 20 minutes then wrote a thread about how it's too hard (titled "First Impressions: This sucks." no less) then followed it up by complaining an alpha mod isn't polished. You should feel happy anyone is helping you at all. Play the Arma tutorials for 30 minutes to get used to the controls and how the inventory, backpacks, etc. work. Spend another 15 minutes watching the DayZGuidez videos on youtube. EDIT: Check this thread for further help.

1.7.2 Opinion thread. All your opinions, good and bad, go here.
walrus2517 replied to Denuth's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Reading the comments 1.7.2 sounds like 1.7.1; so difficult that most servers won't update and will just stick with 1.7.1.5 until a few patches are released. I'm definitely keeping my 1.7.1.5 torrent loaded for folks looking to downgrade. -
I'm bloody done with this deathmatch game
walrus2517 replied to puffu's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
When the mod first became popular you could co-op with a few folks in-game because everyone was just experimenting with a new mod and you had the bandit skins. The way the mod is now if you want to play with anyone you'll have to arrange it before going into the game. There are plenty of folks looking for teammates in the forums but it is nearly impossible to make a trustworthy teammate in-game. However, some people enjoy the DM aspect of it and others like myself still enjoy the lone wolf style. The style of play you are looking for is possible, you'll just have to make arrangements ahead of time. Have some patience. -
He disconnected to avoid a fight. He admits it in a later post. He knew there was a large group in the area and he doesn't think it's fair for bandit groups to camp a rare loot area, so instead of trying to escape to a safe location, he disconnected. This is an exploit and is something that will be fixed in the future. That so many people find this acceptable shows how widespread this problem really is. However, I don't think you can ban someone for this. It's an exploit, cowardly, and Rocket is firmly against it, but you can't ban him. OP - If you want to get through the NWAF unscathed, join an underpopulated server so you have a better chance. Don't cheat then complain when someone bans you from one of hundreds of servers.

Lee Enfield has to be cursed
walrus2517 replied to JustThatEpic's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
If you haven't fired a Lee Enfield before I'll go ahead and warn you that every zed in town is going to hear it and aggro on you. I'd stick with the hatchet. :) -
Servers without friendly fire, aka pvp killing
walrus2517 replied to a sleeping dog's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
...snip... Stop trying to make the game into something the majority of players' date=' and the Devs, don't want. PvE servers remove a CORE mechanic from the game. [/quote'] First, I'm not telling anyone what to do, only predicting how I think this mod will evolve and questioning why it should be closed off to all but a specific style of play. Second, Rocket already allowed someone to work on a single player version of the mod (although the relationship soured) so he is obviously open to the possibility since a large number of people, though you are correct it is far from the majority, are interested in it. People can post that absolutist quote about PvP a thousand times but it doesn't mean it can't change in the future. Again, if it doesn't effect the hardcore players, I'm not sure why people are so avidly against even having this as a possibility. What harm would it do to have a PvE server if it is a separate character than can't be transferred to a PvP server? You can call the people playing on these servers carebears, cowards, or whatever, but if they are enjoying the experience, why would that bother you? Like I said, I think eventually there will be a number of different modes to Day Z; PvP, PvE, single player, etc. so that people can enjoy the mod in the fashion they prefer without effecting anyone playing in another mode. -
Servers without friendly fire, aka pvp killing
walrus2517 replied to a sleeping dog's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Let me preface this by saying I'm not trying to take any kind of shot at BIS, but honestly, this is the first time they've had this kind of popularity and if there is one thing certain in life (beyond death and taxes), it's that money changes everything. Rocket will continue to develop Day Z on his own because he still isn't working on behalf of BIS, but BIS is also putting a lot of resources into backing the mod and will expect to see a continued return on that investment. This means if things can be done to open the mod to more people without taking away from the hardcore crowd, it will happen. I don't see why it has to be all or nothing with this mod. At some point I imagine we'll all have several different Day Z characters for various server types (PvP, PvE, etc.). I think we'll even get to the point where the people playing on the Expert servers stop allowing anyone who has been playing on a Regular server to join their game because they'll claim they got their loot unfairly. EDIT: Also, Rocket has already said Day Z will be easy to port to other Arma maps, so will someone looting Chernarus be allowed to join a server based in Takistan with the same character? My opinion is that Rocket was able to make a great mod because BIS is so open to modding their games, so why wouldn't Rocket, once the mod is in a more finalized state, open Day Z and allow people to do what they want with it? It seems to be the antithesis of everything modding is about to say "this is my mod, this is how it is going to be, no questions asked" when the only reason you are even making a mod is because someone else (BIS in this case) took the exact opposite approach. -
Vital Things Missing from the DayZ Apocalypse
walrus2517 replied to Electrolyte's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I don't necessarily agree with all the OP's suggestions but I do agree the mod needs to be balanced against the uber clans and their loot camps. My current gut feeling is that clan and cooperative play is being promoted at the expense of the lone wolf experience, especially with Rocket discussing clans building their own bases in the future. We're already seeing excessive use of barbed wire to block all the high value loot spawns. I will disagree with your idea that the only priority is "Try to survive". Technically one can do that just by finding matches, a knife, and a hatchet, then heading to the woods to live off animals. There was a post earlier with some jackass claiming he has "mastered the game" because he did just that. :) -
People DC, change server, move behind you, reconnect & kill you !!!
walrus2517 replied to white-rino's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
While this is certainly something that needs to be addressed the OP also needs to be a bit more careful and learn to loot faster. Even with your brother watching the door, you were in a one exit building and knew there was another player in the area possibly seeking revenge because you just killed his friend. It would've been nice if he wasn't a coward and had simply tried to kill your brother in the doorway then come after you instead of cheating, but I agree with the other people who mentioned you should've been out of there. To disconnect, reconnect to another server, move into position, disconnect, then reconnect to the original server, takes time. Learn to loot a building and get the heck out of there, especially when you know other players are in the area. -
Servers without friendly fire, aka pvp killing
walrus2517 replied to a sleeping dog's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
http://dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=15 Because the devs said so.... That's what they say now, but I imagine the execs and shareholders of BIS are businesspeople, not gamers, which means that although they'll allow Rocket to develop this mod as he wants (given how much cash he's brought in), they'll also be sure to push him to make it open to as many people as possible. The more options you give people for playing the more people will buy the game and play. As was pointed out earlier, look at how creative people have gotten with Minecraft servers. Give it time and we'll not only see PvE servers, but melee only servers, servers without NVGs, servers where the zeds are replaced with Evil Carebears, etc. :) -
How to find out the server settings before joining
walrus2517 replied to maxim_malcon@yahoo.com's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I could be 100% wrong but I believe sidechat is blocked on all servers and only determined by the beta version you are running on your machine. I've seen a few folks type in sidechat on a server but I still didn't have the option to do so and no one ever replied to their chatter. EDIT: Ok, it looks like sidechat was blocked starting with one of the recent betas, and since Day Z now requires the latest beta patch, this means it is blocked for everyone. However, there was a bug that if exploited allowed someone to use sidechat but it was fixed in the newest beta (94444). -
Pay attention to the server name before you try one out and if you get a good, quick connection, write the name down. If you find yourself on a good server and can't recall the name, when you disconnect and are shown the leaderboard it should show the server name at the top. Soon you'll have a list of good servers for yourself. The starting gear was nerfed a couple of weeks ago so you start without a weapon and with far fewer supplies (although this is just an experiment and may be temporary) I recommend what Roboserg said. Take 30 minutes to go through the Arma 2 in-game tutorials to get the controls down and also learn how to deal with the inventory which is a complete pain until you get used to it. Youtube has some great instructional videos too. You'll find the initial learning curve far easier in the tutorials rather than trying to learn on the fly in the live mod. Good luck!

Rocket mentioned nerfing the hatchet spawns the other day. I think he said he input the loot percentage incorrectly. You should see far fewer in 1.7.2.

Script for auto run: No more using heavy objects on your keyboard!

Nearly two pages and not one person has just said "thanks", so here you go: THANKS! My middle finger joints get locked and hurt because I'm holding down W so much in this mod. I'm anxious to try this out. -
My favorite character survived 12 days. Around day 3 or 4 I attempted a raid on the NWAF and aggro'd a bunch of zeds. They broke a bone, knocked me out, and by the time I woke up and killed the few eating me, I had 126 blood left. In other words, one more bite from a zed before I regained consciousness and I was dead. I contemplated the same thing you did, just giving up and respawning. Instead, I promised myself I'd give it 30 minutes, so I started searching, and sure enough, spotted a cow in the distance. It took me nearly 20 minutes to get there because I was passing out every 10-15 steps, but I got there, killed and gutted the cow, cooked the meat, and was back on my feet again. That is still my favorite moment in 6 weeks of playing this mod; coming back when I was just one bite away from death. To finish the story, that character died, not from zeds or a bandit, but because I got rushed and accidentally clicked "Respawn" instead of "Options" when opening the main menu. I stared blankly at the screen for at least 2-3 minutes wanting to kick myself in the nuts. The point is, never give up. :)

Servers without friendly fire, aka pvp killing
walrus2517 replied to a sleeping dog's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
i am not necessarily saying don't do separate pve servers as much as i'm trying to convince you that whatever you think will be fun about them will not exist i'm trying to save you all some time ;) Again though, different people enjoy different things. Hell, just look at all the ridiculous pornography fetishes floating around. :) I think it is worth experimenting with given the mod is in alpha because you never know how people will react and what can be learned from it. As long as it doesn't effect the PvP servers, why not let people give it a try? -
Servers without friendly fire, aka pvp killing
walrus2517 replied to a sleeping dog's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
You should probably edit the OP to point out that players would not be able to crossover between the two server types. The only argument against it seems to be people rightfully concerned about the ease of looting. -
Servers without friendly fire, aka pvp killing
walrus2517 replied to a sleeping dog's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
i clearly stated my case earlier on this page You listed a few arguments as to why you wouldn't enjoy it. What he is asking is why you are against anyone else being able to try this. If you can have a separate character for the non-PvP servers I don't see why anyone would be against letting the people who want to try it do so. -
Servers without friendly fire, aka pvp killing
walrus2517 replied to a sleeping dog's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
They could keep separate characters for the two server types, similarly to how people already have "unofficial" servers where you can start a second character without effecting your first. Also, people can already server hop to a server with only 1-2 players, loot the NWAF, then head back to their regular 50 player server. -

Servers without friendly fire, aka pvp killing
walrus2517 replied to a sleeping dog's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Zombies are still a threat, but you can explore the map, perhaps actually find some rare loot for once (I've been playing for 6 weeks and have yet to see NVGs or any high level military gear except a SAW249). You can team up with others to slaughter every zed in a town because you no longer have a shoot first mentality. It would be a different experience but it could still be fun. I'm not saying it would be fun for long and the PvP is absolutely what makes Day Z so unique and great. All I'm saying is that some people would still enjoy this. You can basically do this already (people have custom servers where you can play with a second character) or just join a server with only 1 or 2 players. -
Servers without friendly fire, aka pvp killing
walrus2517 replied to a sleeping dog's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
This has been discussed before and despite the crying from the hardcore crowd a few people do seem to want it. I think it would be great for newbies so they get a feel for the mechanics and explore the map a bit before spawning in Elektro surrounded by bandits. It would also be a good experiment to see what kind of teamwork develops when everyone isn't in a shoot first mentality. You could easily keep these characters separate from the PvP server characters so folks couldn't just loot the non-PvP servers. However, as others have said, Rocket seems to be 100% against this idea so don't expect it. I imagine once the mod matures you'll see options like this but for now your best bet is just to stick with underpopulated servers if you want to avoid PvP. -
i am just fed up of this mod
walrus2517 replied to janekaleszczyk@yahoo.co.uk's topic in New Player Discussion
Have patience. Hundreds of thousands of people have figured it out so you can too. It can be troublesome and as someone else said you picked a bad time to start playing with the server issues the past 24 hours. Once you actually get in the game you'll find it more than worth the wait. Best of luck. -
Many thanks! The maps I've seen of heli spawns seemed incomplete.
