It seems to me that the object of the game is to survive, so I play very conservatively. I'll spend some time watching a town before entering it to get an idea of where the zombies are, and wether there are any other players there. I typically avoid other players like the plague. The last time i came across another player and tried to help them out they were a new spawn in a coastal town at night. At first I thought they were new and didn't know what they were doing, but after a little while I swear he was doing everything he could to attract zombies and get me killed so he could loot me. I have avoided others since, unless on a private hive server, then I'l get the stupid stuff out of my system lol.

Farthest distance you have crawled with broken legs?
bobalonius replied to daspope's topic in New Player Discussion
I crawled from a little east of novy sobor to the hospital in cherno. I came across 2 crashed helicopters along the way, but all I really got from them was a M249 and a bunch of ammo for it. I had really hoped for some medical supplies. When I got close to the hospital I spotted a sniper in the apartment across the street from it. I waited him out and he eventually left, taking most of the near by zombies with him. I crawled in to the hospital and found some morphine. I could hear flies buzzing, but I didn't want to push my luck any more. I grabbed a couple more morphine and got the hell out of Dodge. -
Probably a dumb question but... How are you guys measuring FPS in game? Is there somethig built in to Arma or are you using a separate utility?

So I have a tent and I can cook meat...
bobalonius replied to cindyanne1's topic in New Player Discussion
when i first set up my tent i threw a bunch of stuff in it and clicked save several times. (it would be nice if there was a confirmation message) the next day it was empty. it hasn't lost anything else since though... just a sec, let me go find some wood to knock on... ok. my conclusion so far is don't put stuff in a new tent until after the server has reset once. -
will a broken bone heal over time, or does it require morphine?

NOOBHERE Possibly stupid question, but can I grab ARMA from Steam and play DayZ?
bobalonius replied to Treze13's topic in New Player Discussion
but yes, the steam versions work just fine -
the server I am on was just killed by a hacker, fortunately i was able to make it back to my body and recover my gear... except for the ghilie suit... damn hacker. >:( aparently you cant strip the suit off a dead body. <_<
-
well, when everybody on the server dies at the same time either there was a hacker... or maybe a giant meteor struck the earth... <_< and there was a message that came up saying something about live stream being hacked...

What he said. The other day I was in Krasnostav, which has a store. I ended up eating my way through the whole place. By the time I got there my inventory was full, so every can of food I found there I ate, I ended up leaving at almost full health again. If you arent at full health eat any food you find if you don't have room to carry it. Cans only give back 200, but they add up. Cooked meat is better, but it can be a pain sometimes to find the hunting knife and matches to carve and cook critters.

Why would that be cheating? That would just be good strategy. :P I've been concidering putting up a tent on a lower population server for storage purposes.

If they turned the flashlight in to a 6 cell mag light then we'd really be talkin. :)

I didn't say i don't have a gun, I just said I haven't used one. :D Or to quote the movie Quigley Down Under "Said I never had much use for one...never said I didn't know how to use it." The hatchet does need a little space to really be effective, but not a whole lot. If he's all up in your face take a step back then swing. You'll really come in to your own at night though, specially if you tweak your graphic settings for a little more night time visability. ;) Don't give up, once you get over the dieing thing it'll get to be more fun. I know the first couple days for me I was about ready to call it quits until I learned to just let go and say screw it and start again.

4) Crawl, crawl, crawl. Unless you are trying to do a speed run through one of the cities, taking your time and crawling through the small towns, you can get fairly close to a z without aggro if you take your time and do it cautiously. It's even better if you do it at night, they are all but blind at night so you can stand up and walk (not run, walk) as long as you pay atention to your noise meter you can pass stupidly close to them. It just takes practice. 5) I've run in to this a time or two myself, it's just luck of the draw. Unless you plan on hunting survivors though, that hatchet is your best friend. It can typically kill a z in one shot, and it's silent so it doesn't attract others when used. Using a gun to kill a z can get you in a heap of trouble in a hurry. My current character has amazingly been alive for a few days now and I haven't used a gun yet.

Starting group for older guys
bobalonius replied to WargameKlok's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
What? You think these things were just invented in the last few years? Theres probably some people playing this who cut their teeth on text based games back in the 80's. -
What the hell was that ? empty noob @ middle map
bobalonius replied to bw.shuggoth@gmail.com's topic in New Player Discussion
I don't know if it was a glitch or a server setting or what, but I was spawning up around Novi Sobor one evening. I don't remember what server it was on all I know is it confused the hell out of me the first time or 2. -
This is my hatchet. There are many like it, but this one is mine. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me my hatchet is useless. Without my hatchet, I am useless. I must swing my hatchet true. I must swing straighter than the enemy who is trying to kill me. I must strike him before he strikes me. I will. My hatchet and I know that what counts in survival is not the glint of light off of our edge, the arc of our swing, or the swoosh of the air parting around out blade. We know that it is the hits that count. We will hit. My hatchet is human, even as I am human, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strengths, its range, its speed, its handle, and its head. I will keep my hatchet clean and ready, even as I am clean and ready. We will become part of each other. Before God I swear this creed. My hatchet and I are the defenders of my country. We are the masters of our enemy. We are the saviors of my life. So be it, until victory is ours and there is no enemy.

I bastardized the Rifleman's Creed. It's a US Marine thing. Here is a link the the wikipedia article on it. http://en.wikipedia....man's_Creed (navy? seriously? >:( )

My game experience
bobalonius replied to janusz.pietraczuk@gmail.com's topic in New Player Discussion
sadly, that will be the typical encounter with other players. stick to cover as much as possible, specially near high traffic areas. sometimes it's better to sprint through open areas with a little evasion thrown in. possibly in bursts... i'm up...they see me...im down... try and avoid servers with tags enabled as well, those can give you away even if you are well concealed. the most important thing though, death is a major part of the game so don't let it frustrate you. :D -
And here I was under the impression that most of the world concidered us all to be a bunch of arrogant ignorant bastards!

really small backpack, or additional storage space?
-
I was afraid of that. I had hoped it was an additional bag that could be worn with a backpack, but figured that was probably too good to be true. I had to ask just to be sure though.

So... last night i get my leg broke by a zombie in the vacinity of Novi Sobor and... well... I have managed to display my stubborn streak. (or is it my masochistic streak starting to show through?) I managed to crawl to the outskirts of Cherno before calling it a night. This morning I have started to make my way towards the hospital. I really am starting to wonder about my sanity. I managed to make my way to the northern hospital in Cherno, found morphine, shot up, grabbed a few spares, and got the hell out of dodge. While this has been a memorable experience, I don't know that I'm all that interested in repeating it. It probably would have been easier and faster to just die and start over. :D

Ghillie suit help vs hiding/detection from Zombies or is it a pure PVP peice of kit ?
bobalonius replied to Siberian (DayZ)'s topic in New Player Discussion
you're more than likely going to get killed by any players you meet anyway, go ahead and use it if you find it. it may help you survive a little longer in your travels between towns. you can always hold on to your original clothes and change back when entering a town if you want. -
check your blood level, if its low enough you'll pass out every couple minutes. that can really make the game interesting. lol

i've managed to survive a few days with this life and i've acquired a couple things i'd like to keep, so i'm going to see how close i can get back to the beaches before i die and try to give myself a fighting chance to get back to my body and loot myself.
