Pretty sad fact. I see the realism argument get thrown around a lot on these forums. Usually it's to rebut suggestions that would make the game "easier". Well, this would make it harder, and also much less silly.

Debatable. Regardless of this fact, though, the real-life M9 and MP5 are still super loud, even when suppressors are fitted. DayZ doesn't feature special ultra-quiet guns. It features standard military weapons with standard suppressors, and these are still as loud as a rock concert.

It'd be pretty easy to just have all the speakers play the sound equally, as opposed to localizing it to a particular channel for that directional aspect.

The idea that you can put a "silencer" on the end of your M9 or MP5 to change a loud BANG! into a barely-audible "pew" is laughable. In real life, there is no such thing as a "silencer". In real life, we have what are called suppressors that reduce muzzle flash and the sound of the weapon firing. Another major effect is that the sound of a suppressed weapon is very difficult to localize. Most suppressors bring the noise down to the 130-140dB range, which is about as loud as a jet engine 100 feet away from you. In fact, the quietest gun ever made was the British De Lisle carbine, and it fired at ~85dB. 85 deciBels is about as loud as someone playing the trombone. Think about that for a second. Possibly the quietest gun ever made, and it's still as loud as a brass instrument. By contrast, what we know as a "silencer" is entirely fiction. It's a creation of Hollywood, and the idea that you can attach a small can to your gun to instantly make it go "pew pew pew" and be completely inaudible to a person standing 10 feet away is absurd. DayZ is a game about realism, so let's make the weapons more realistic.

The guys throwing around the realism argument are just doing that because they're out of ideas. I mean this is a zombie game... it requires a certain amt of suspension of disbelief. But the game really isn't that hard. I died yesterday, and today I geared up in Elektrozavodsk in less than an hour. I ran to the grocery store, found a makarov and supplies, then ran to the fire station where I found an M14 AIM, then to the hospital for blood bags. Easy peasy. Just run, and ignore the zombies and you'll be fine.

You're doing it wrong. Seriously. Run along the southermost street in Cherno and just go into all the big buildings, making your way west towards the supermarket. From there go around up to the hospital. Check the apartment buildings, including the rooftops.

New player here. Have had the game for ~4 days now and died many many many times since then. This game isn't actually that difficult. I started out, had no idea where I was, so I ran around and pulled some aggro from zombies and promptly got eaten. Awesome, lesson #1. Next life, I crawled on my belly until I saw a road sign for the town I was in. As soon as I saw Солнечный on the sign I opened up my laptop and googled "DayZ map" which right away told me: a ) where I was, and b ) where I could find some supplies I crawled around and then went up to the factory where I promptly realized I had never found beans and was starving, so I tried to run to a farm, pulled aggro, and got eaten. That was lesson #2. After a few lives I realized that the zombies really aren't a threat; you just run into a barn or other building with more than one exit. So it was probably by day 3 or 4 of owning the game that I spawned in Chernogorsk and just sprinted through the city in and out of appartment buildings (where I found an AK), the supermarket (makarov, shitload of beans) and the hospital (blood, morphine, etc). After that I ran north, found a dead survivor with some handy gear on me, found a Lee-Enfield, killed a guy with the enfield and took his tools. Now I never have to go into a town again, pretty much, as long as I'm near fresh water. Went exploring, found a crash site, traded my AK for a FN FAL. So yeah. ~3 days to acclimatize to the game and realize that unless you make a mistake, zombies are almost irrelevant. All I'm missing is GPS (which I really don't need. I can navigate just fine using dayzdb), NVG, rangefinder, and a good sniper rifle. The hardest part of this game are hackers and server-hoppers that ghost around behind you.
