Not a care-bear thread, but asking for a solution
tommes replied to Jurkey's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Rocket already knows the solution. Increase incentive to cooperate by adding the need for other people's capabilities. Little story here to elaborate. Last weekend I roamed Lingor alone an my inital goal was to find some survivors with worthy loot and kill them. Got badly screwed up in the process. Tried to find animals to buff up health but those where nowhere to be found. Ate tons of beans and pasta to get up to like 5000 blood when some guy attacks me with his glock from right behind me. Managed to kill him but was left with less than 1000 blood. Still no animals in sight. Found bloodbags. As you know pretty much useless alone. So I had to find another survivor, keep him alive and have him to be so nice to give me a transfusion. That's a strong incentive. I managed to find such a noble individual. Turned out he desperately needed blood himself. So we helped each other out and both stayed decent enough to not shoot the other in the back at first chance. That's positive incentive in opposite of punishment for misbehaviour. It's a good principle. -
The small and light but fast rounds like 5.56 STANAG and 5.45 AK ammo also tend to cause hydrostatic shock and therefore are not as weak as the DayZ damage table suggests. Their real weakness is the lack of penetration power relating to obstacles like windscreens, walls, brushes or even grass. Bullet hits grass and will go anywhere but where it is supposed to. Just lowering damage therefore is a lazy and imo wrong way of modeling that.

Be careful what program you use to launch DayZ

DayZ Redux - DayZ purist focused custom DayZ Mod (Formerly DayZ DIAF)
tommes replied to venthos's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
I will try it out some time next week if it's not too much hassle to get it going. -
Arma 2 running smooth. But OA and DayZ has fps problems
tommes replied to majataka's topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
DayZ needs a lot of CPU and HDD-Speed. CPU usage is because of the AI of the Zeds. That's why Arma2 itself runs smoothly and DayZ not. Are you sure you have latest chipset drivers installed? Is any automatic underclocking of the CPU (energy saving mode) set up? If so, deactivate that! You can also try to put DayZ in a RAM-disk. Tutorials are on Youtube. -
DayZ DIAF - A custom DayZ Mod I'm working on. Input appreciated!

Sounds mostly great. I'd try it if the server's connection is halfway decent. Maybe you remove all sniper rifles at first just to see how it affects gameplay. Then add in CZ and M24 back in as you described. -
Why is as bad as hacking if I pick something up that somebody else cheated in? And what is so ban worthy on having i.e. a G36 SD? It's relatively similar to a m4 SD. The AS50 TWS is bad though. I would only use it against bitch ass sniper douches. That's it. Just don't be a dick.

How to make the zombies more of a threat, by only changing a few small things.
tommes replied to Hello moto's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I do some of that on youtube. ^^ -
I want a PvP map that has some hunger games style to it. Maybe round island with low tier loot in the outer circles and in the center a city with loot getting higher tier the more you approach it. I don't like deserts. Environment therefore like Chernarus or Lingor. Cities I would prefer to be western (europe or american).

I don't do stories. I am not a role player. And a virtual death can't be something to actually fear because it can't be real or permanent. If you once realize that nature, you are not afraid anymore. That's just what it is. Getting in fights or other interaction is still exciting. That's why I'm explicitly looking for it and why I just can't understand people hiding away in low pop areas. Who would buy a camping simulator? But that's just me. Feel free to play however you please. -
Every high tier equipment has it's right to be there. It just should be rare as hell. And why not have a little fun with hacked in weapons? I died often enough to hackers to deserve some payback!

My music for DayZ is gunshots. I play it myself. ^^

So inland spawn points how about it?
tommes replied to electroban's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
It would add to the desorientation. Rocket would like it. I wouldn't mind. On other maps like Lingor or Fallujah the spawns are much more diverse all along. But they should do it in combination with a group spawn mechanic, where you define a group in the lobby and those spwan at least in the same sector or something. -

I'm gonna be fine as long as they fix zombie movement and animations. You can deal with anything else if you know how and get the right equipment. And if that won't work out...I still am not afraid of losing my virtual DayZ life. Why should I be? -

It will make things definitely much more annoying. I just doubt this will be any fun. Any Zombie-Apocalypse-Scenario is never really about the zombies. Why should it be? Zombies are dumb. They're merely environmental. It's always about how people act, re- and interact. Sorry, but that's the mindset of a pussy and people who Alf+F4 out of combat. I was afraid of dying (aka losing your gear and position...and that's all it is to) at first. Now I don't care anymore. I just need an Enfield and an Alice-Pack to be happy. I can find that pretty quickly anywhere. Encountering other players is still exciting. Just surviving for it's own sake seems so goddamn pointless. It's still just a game. It's main point is to make fun which means create excitement through moments of failure/success. To hide away in solitude in DayZ to me is as much success as it would be in real life. None. Does anyone ever have problems finding some food to reset his hunger meter? I don't think so. The reason to get steaks is to buff up blood again after being hit by something. Without a buddy bloodbagging you your only way of achieving that is consuming steaks. Solo players therefore would be affected slightly more by limiting matches than groupies, but I doubt anybody would even notice it. I for my part never had any of my characters ever do more than let's say 3 camp fires. Either died or found some other means. I would support the motion though just because of realism...or in DayZ-terms...authenticity or plausibility. -
Another link...video in link in posting above is way longer though...

Would have a nice uncertainty factor to it but would make server picking a real pain in the ass. -
Rocket said in some other thread that he is swamped working on standalone. I guess we will have to sit it out.

There's no need for quoting if you post right beneath the original question.

Would you be so kind an post the link to that? Can't find it.

Alright, so I did the whole Chreno-Elektro beaner boogaloo, now to highwayman!

As far as I know wire fences stop vehicles...as ridiculous as it may be. -
It sort of is already. Zeds have like 4500 blood. As stated in interviews rocket plans to have different stages of the infection with zeds more human like in early stages and then deteriorating from that. And zeds are only infected humans. Their bodies react to shots as do uninfected. You don't use pistols that much, do you? Even with a .45 you will need 3 or more body shots on a zed. On a player you need much more. You can't bring someone down with a pistol, even when you have the jump on him. That's exactly the problem.
-
You can't think like "This gun does that damage so that gun must have this..."! Life...or death for that matter...does not work that way. Stuff is way more complicated with different types of bullets, what parts of body you hit in what angle and whatnot. And the thing is at ranges from 0 to 25 meters you probably are better of with a pistol than a machine gun. And even with the relatively weak makarov ammo hit with a couple of rounds you are maybe not dead, but incapable of fighting on...except maybe you are on certain drugs like amphetamine. Anyway, there are certain limits in where modelling reality can go. Right now it's pretty bad I think. It was better before the nerf. As a quick fix increasing power of pistols would be nice. In the long run a different damage and health systems is necessary to statsify demands.
-
This is not an RPG with leveling and higher characters can't be touched by new ones. If you just pretend to model reality then a little houseknive found in every kitchen can kill any dude with any weaponry...as long as it's not an stab proof vest or some medieval armor. In reality some guy with a makarov can kill you easily with a couple of hits. He just has to get close enough to hit you. The weakness of handguns is their limited range and their lack of being able to penetrate armor. Otherwise they are as deadly as anything.
-
I gladly pick up all the pistols. The more common the ammo the better. Makarov is good enough for zombie control as it takes down anyone with a headshot as any other gun and the ammo is everywhere. G17 I leave be because ammo is rare. Too easy you end up with empty gun while attacked by a "horde" of zombies. Yes, it does. Thank you so far. But what about the mod? Anything planned there or do we just have to sit it out? And you didn't say anything specific about power of pistols, which was my original question. (People, please don't discuss the sniper quarrel over here! That's not the topic.) Even a crappy handgun is deadly in real life. You don't need 10 bullets with a makarov to take someone down. One shot in some vital organ or the central nervous system should do it. Pros double tap in the chest, one in the head. Done. While the final headshot is there just to make sure the body stays down forever. The way it is right now in DayZ is neither realistic nor plausible. Can't gun damage be fixed to old levels via damage factor? Just triple the value they have right now.
