I tried it out over the weekend and didn't like it. Spawned in next to some of those Lingor style barracks, there were weird noises, found an AKM, there were more weird noises, I got scared and went back to Chernaraus. ^_^ -

I haven't had problems with tents or vehicles that weren't caused by the server in a long time. -

This. Expect to die a lot when you first get started but you'll learn something from every death and it will make you a better player in the end. Don't expect to go in to the standalone and do well if you've been running around in empty servers the whole time, lol. It'll be quite a shock to the system going back to full ones. I'd recommend looking for a whitelist or password protected server with good admin and a decent player count instead. :D -
This. The Enfield always kills or at least KOs in one shot for me. I've owed my life to that weapon many times... As for Bambi killing - it makes the little guys feel big. They're too scared to pick fights up north so they come back to the coast and fight freshies.

I'm a bit of a diva, I'd never knowingly join a game with >50 ping, lol. I've played on US servers with 100 ping and it was playable though. PvP was a bit screwy compared to what I'm used to, but apart from that it was fine.

It should run pretty smoothly on normal settings with a couple of things bumped up to high.

A dual-core just isn't powerful enough to play the game smoothly, I'd look at upgrading your CPU. In the mean time Google some config commands that you can use to lower your graphics further and improve your performance,

What does "before then or you will lose stuff" mean?

The server will be restarted in x minutes. Disconnect before then or you will lose stuff. If you stay on the server when it goes down then the last minute or so won't save properly so you risk losing anything you picked up or whatever in that time. -
What about making equiment more rare(especially weapons)?

On the one hand it could be a good idea, if ammo was more scarce maybe people wouldn't seek out PvP so actively. But on the other hand, I think a lot of people would find a weapon and go on Bambi killing rampages. xD Also, with everything being harder to find people will be more likely to want to steal from each other, but I'd rather that than the random/pointless deathmatching that goes on these days TBH. BTW I'm sure this has been suggested at least once, maybe use the search bar in the top-right to check first next time. ^^ -

What would the minimum system requirements be to run DayZ?

DayZ is a bit more intensive than stock ArmA with all the zombies running around and whatnot. If you can run ArmA 2: Free or the OA Demo really smoothly then you should be fine in DayZ though. If it's choppy at all with stock ArmA then you probably won't have much luck. -
Yeah, if you're having problems with mouse lag turn smoothing off completely and disable post-processing effects. Both make your mouse input quite laggy.

What Venthos said. Any maybe the reason it was listed as '[FIXED] You can no longer eat or drink in a vehicle' was to avoid giving the bug more attention and people using it on servers still running the old version. Think, people... :) -
DayZ standalone will likely be a little easier to run, they're making some changes to the way things are handled i.e. currently zombies are handled by your PC, in the standalone the server will take care of them. I still don't think a laptop with a dual-core is gonna cut it though unfortunately. Might be time to start saving the pennies to put a little desktop rig together. ^_^ I feel your pain... You should be able to run Lingor on max settings though TBH. ;D

Falling damage, very unrealistic!

Falling damage is fine IMO. Remember your character is pretty heavily laden with all your gear. Yes, you've probably fallen 2m in real life with no broken bones but please, try it again with 2 rifles, a sidearm and a backpack full of tools, food/drink and medical supplies, lol. -
Hmm... I don't think that's good advice, sorry. xD My laptop with i5/4Gb RAM/I forget which AMD card REALLY struggles with ArmA, nevermind DayZ. That laptop will 'run' the game. As in - it will load up without giving you an error message. But I'd expect borderline playability on lowest graphics settings at best. Not trying to put you down, just trying to avoid rage if you buy ArmA II and don't enjoy it because you're playing on a low spec laptop.

Coke all day. I only drink Pepsi as a last resort if I can't find anything else. I usually carry 3 water bottles but if I find a can of coke I'll crack it open. It's good to treat yourself sometimes. -
You could try AWA Private Hive. You have to sign up on their website to get access to the server but it's EU based and full of players 24/7.

I used to try and get as geared up as possible, just kept searching for the few items I was missing, eventually died and started again. Rinse and repeat. Got bored of that after a while and started lurking in Cherno/Elektro waiting for shit to kick off then laid a bandit beat down and gave whatever gear the bandits had to the bambis. That got boring eventually too and lately I haven't been playing much, just been looking for the few vehicles and weapons that I haven't had yet before the standalone comes out when I do get on.
