I don't know I was following some guy in the dark trying to talk to him, he didn't act as if he had heard me at all, when he finally spotted me he seemed really suprised, stopped suddenoly looked at me, then pulled out his axe and charged me. Course 20ft away axe vs M4 didn't go well. But it certainly SEEMED like he couldn't hear anything. Next guy was way up north, he had lots of gear , I had cover in a building and he was stuck right out in the open. He saw me run inside and lay down, so I started talking and typing to him. But he got up , in plain view and started trying to flank me , so he died as well. Didn't act like he could hear me or see the text at all. I clearly had him stone cold.

I know it works sometimes. Just wondered if it's buggy, hard to tell. I don't want to have to kill people when all I want to do is handcuff them and molest them.

It feels slightly overpowered atm, also one shot to the body to take a zombie down.

Yeah private Hive screwed the mod beyond recognition. People simply can't be trusted to "play the game how they want" if they are given an easy option 90%+ take it. Hopefully Rocket will keep this locked up nice and tight so he can keep control of his baby and we can all play Dayz the way he intends it.

Thoughts so far on Dayz Standalone

I'm pleasantly surprised with the Alpha, it's much smoother and less buggy than I expected, and once you overcome the initial frustration with the food/drink system it's actually pretty good. Of course we are lacking the crafting , animals etc that will make it really interesting. But its a good foundation. I am actually enjoying there being less zombies as well. As survival is harder getting hit by a zombie even once and catching a disease can be fatal makes getting caught out by a zombie quite tense. The reason private hives / servers etc fucked the Mod is because people are idiots. You give them an easy option they take it. I'm really hoping that Rocket keeps Dayz locked up nice and tight so people cant fuck it up. Dayz is better the harder it is, let people add weapons and vehicles , take away night time etc and you just end up back where the mod ended up. Unfortunately a lot of the people are coming into the standalone with that mentality. -
To me the system burns water and food way too fast and we all know the penalty for failure is way too harsh. But here's how I'm avoiding passing out and it seems to work. It seems currently that food is tied to your energy level. This means hungry and tired messages mean the same thing. Running, and presumably being Ill lowers your energy. DON'T sprint, it's ridiculously bad if you sprint. Your hydration also lowers through activity but also eating dry rice and powdered milk. Both of these need to be kept high to stop the messages occurring constantly. Eating or drinking can often be followed straight away by "im thirsty" because it never took you out of the "thirst message zone" Fruit and cans of drink raise both your energy and your hydration. Once you get messages that say "I am very hungry" or "Im exhausted" Eat ASAP, as much as you can really. Once you get "my head is pounding" or "I'm very thirsty" drink ASAP. If you get a red message you have VERY little time to get as much food and / or drink as you can. Ideally stop moving and eat and drink. Remember rice and powdered milk dehydrate you so if this is your food hydrate first as much as you can. If you get the levels high enough you regenerate blood. So when you find food you cant carry , eat it, stock up. Only eat rotten fruit as a last resort as it might make you Ill. Finally you can bring unconscious people round with saline bags. As far as I can tell nothing else works, not even Epi pens, which I thought were specifically for this, but hey ho.

A dozen cans but no way to open them

Some tins have a ring pull, but the knife, screw driver mechanic hasn't worked once for me for opening cans :( Tell you what I'm pretty sure I could open a can with an axe, or a rock, or my M4. -
My mate spawned in next to two other people said Hi and they beat him to death with their bare hands lol. Everyone else I've encountered has been friendly so far, even some armed people up north.

Nah it is better than the mod, doesn't feel as good as Arma 3 though. Also rocks and things can still break your legs which is another thing they fixed in Arma 3. I'm really hoping they bring the improved vehicle physics from 3 at least. -
TEXT SYSTEM V.S. ICON SYSTEM

I don't mind the text system itself I quite like it actually. There are several problems though, firstly we don't understand how it works properly yet. Secondly it's too fast, calories / water are burned too quickly. Thirdly the penalty is too harsh. It takes over a week to die of starvation in RL! -
Eat and drink, Cans of drink fulfil energy AND hydration. Rice and Powdered milk raise food but LOWER hydration. DON'T sprint. If you cant carry any more food eat what you find, keep your levels up. This works.

1: Its a zombie game, night time is scarier by it's very nature. 2: Conversely it's actually easier to avoid zombies at night as they can't see as well. So you can sneak past them, nice and tense, using the sounds to tell where they are etc. 3: The gameplay is more tactical. Yes you can use your torch, but it gives away your position. It's a great mechanic, enabling you to sneak up on people. Play carefully or risk being able to loot more effectively with you light on. Example, I was looting a tower block in the dark, and I got stuck in a bloody room and couldn't find my way out so I risked using my torch to get out, as I came down the stairs I saw another torch beam approaching. we must have both noticed each others torches because we both stopped and our lights both went out. What followed was a fun 20 minutes sneaking around trying to avoid this other guy looking for me in the dark, I ended up hiding in a bush as he snuck past me about 5 ft away, once his back was turned I could creep off into the woods. It was ace.

The problem is that people are idiots. The game is MORE fun at night , but everyone wants to have constant "easy" game play, so they will switch servers to day time ones and we will have the same thing that happened in the mod, totally empty night-time servers, 24/7 daytime servers etc. It's more fun if you adapt to the game rather than trying to circumvent it.

ok I gave up and re spawned. Now Im taking a different approach. Im never sprinting unless it's an emergency. Im just jogging. When my character gets out of breath , im stopping and resting until his heavy breathing stops. When Im exploring houses etc im walking. Everything obviously takes longer. BUT I seem to be going ok. FAR fewer annoying text messages. I managed to go quite far in land without any food or drink, finally found a can of soda and that seems to have kept me going. Initially it's frustrating but I'm quite enjoying the slower pace now, I'm looking around more and taking things in more. We will see if I just pass out anyway :)

So yeah unconsciousness is the primary problem. Kept eating and drinking. When I started getting red messages I lay down and didnt move , ate and drank some more. "you are exhausted" in red. Stayed still lying down. STILL lost conciousness. It seems unavoidable. And once your unconscious that is it. Waited 40 minutes which is ridiculous. Logging out kills you. Also found a friend that had the same problem , for him he was unconcious on my screen he was running forward, lagging back endlessly. Tried to Defib him, did nothing. Tried to med kit him, did nothing.

1.7.3 is going really well on Rp 1 and Rp2, I'm having a blast recently. Any problems are quickly solved by Rolle. Although sometimes its hard to get on Rp1 as Digby says you can get onto the other server in those situations. -

It's a great server, well run and interesting. It's really a breathe of fresh air after public hive servers. It's not perfect, the rules cause a whole different set of problems and frustrations but there is no doubting that the experience is interesting and worth a go. Alot of work has gone into making the system work as well as possible, and having different vehicles, weapons and skins is nice. Another bonus is that generally any ass hats end up getting banned so you don't have to put up with them for long. -

Since the mod seems to pretty much beyond repair imho. I've decided to rejig my suggestions list into a standalone suggestions list and remove discussion about the mod and bugs. There's so much duplication in here it's hard to credit original authors on the ones I didn't come up with myself but I try. Firstly communication. Dayz is all about interaction between players. It's important that communication is quick, clear and easy as death occurs so fast. 1: Whisper, Talk, Shout. Different ranges and audibility to both players and zombies. Also a whistle or some-such. 2: Improved hand signals for silent communication. 3: Walky talkies and radios for long range communication. http://dayzmod.com/f...walkie-talkies/ 3.5: (controversial) Find a way of either stopping 3rd party voice or making it transmit an audible (non specific "talking") noise in game. To encourage use of direct chat over 3rd party chat. And at least give those people that still use it the penalty of giving away their position in game. A great idea that will add a valuable humanising element. 5: Notes. Placeable notes. Being able to interact with players in this way is important I think. Limits will be needed of course. 6: Better hunting. Animals that are harder to hunt, they spook and run etc. Also I'd like to see Z's kill nearby animals, providing that feeling of a ravaged eco system and creating another unpredictable element to their behaviour. Combined with the zombie modifications below would create unpredictable zombie encounters. ie Wandering through the woods, a deer runs past followed by some zeds, then they spot you... Gear and loot etc: 7: A more involved crafting system. Makeshift weapons etc. Possibly more interesting cooking. 8:Far less high end military gear. I believe the CZ550 should be the top of the food chain for all but a very very lucky few. There should be less ammo and weapons in general , giving more of a scrabbling for survival feel. And tied in with the crafting system so you can always make SOMETHING to defend yourself with. The nightime / light mechanic is very rewarding. 9: Less predictable loot locations. Maybe a searching system so that you have to search more carefully to find goodies. 10: repairable generators etc. i don't agree with everything in this thread but there is some good discussion: http://dayzmod.com/f...enerators-v-33/ . I also know generators are in the game with an eye to being used so expect some of this stuff anyway. 11: Padlocks: Allows players to lock any door , blocking zombies. but players can break padlock with any weapon. Alolows players to hold up in a building against zombies for a while but not block players permanently. 12: Camo netting. To help hide vehicles. It's been suggested many times. 13: non lethal weapons. For instance tranq darts. To balance , bolt action, slow firing. !st hit slows player and blurs vision. 2nd shot slows more until they pass out. Epi pen neutralises effects. Again adds more gameplay options. 14: Shots damaging equipment. Discussion here: http://dayzmod.com/f...age-by-gunfire/ . Also weapon maintenance. Environment: 15: This ground mist is amazing, would be greatif this cropped up occasionally, http://dayzmod.com/f...136-heavy-mist/ . More atmosphere and horror in general. Zombies: 16: Zombies more curious about long range noises. For instance an explosion in the distance would make many of them shamble that way. Not agroed as such just curious. 17: Zombies not giving up so easily. It's currently to easy to lose zombies, and it is immersion breaking that they suddenly stop and give up straight away. A "searching" period after they lose a player would be nice. 18: Zombies spawning much further from the player, giving the feel that they are always there, and making them more dangerous , especially when combined with No: 16. Discussion here : http://dayzmod.com/f...ns-and-zombies/ (Ignore references to patch optimisations). 18: GORE. Lots more blood and gore all around. Be nice to see dismemberment etc. General: 19: Standardise Things: I'm assuming the standalone will provide a standard "this is Dayz" experience. http://dayzmod.com/f...dardise-things/ . Up the FOV a bit, and remove peripheral dots. 20: Server hopping: It's really nice to be able to change servers at will. And the flow of new people coming through a server keeps it alive in many ways. But I wonder if ghosting can ever really be fixed ? Do the pros outweigh the cons ? I'm not sure on this one but wonder if there should be a delay before you can go back to a previous server. Or possibly even being locked to one server ? 21: Linked maps to create a bigger playing area. http://dayzmod.com/f...linked-servers/ Achievable with current technology and doesnt have choke points. 22: Characters linked to timezones. So people can never TOTALLY avoid night-time play. http://dayzmod.com/f...synced-to-time/ Either this or possibly speeding up the day night cycle a little bit. Something to encourage nightime play as it is much more immersive. 23: Player customisation. More costumes and more mix and match, this allows groups to make a "uniform" for visual identification. This should include camo gear options etc, but Ghillie suits need to go, they currently overwrite bandit / hero skins etc and are too ... standard. These suggestions are or course just my opinion. But I feel strongly that Dayz is at it's best when immersion is at a maximum. I also know that there are elements of Dayz that really enhance the game but people avoid them because they put you at a disadvantage. Everything possible should be done to maximise the massive gameplay possibilities that Dayz has to offer, but that so many people never experience because they are given other options. The perma death mechanic is incredibly harsh but its what makes Dayz so compelling, there are other mechanics just as exciting in Dayz but they get overlooked. Im not discussing some issues such as Alt-f4, duping etc as I believe standalone will resolve them anyway.

Not sure I agree. It IS a zombie game after all, you can't turn the gore off in a zombie movie! I'd say or in a "real zombie apocalypse" but not sure that washes lol

But again, standalone should have no hacking (or alot less). This is more about feature suggestions rather than issues with the mod as it stands.
