I'm of the Opinion that KoS will be shorted sight and wasteful....
Nalestom replied to dustylion@gmail.com's topic in General Discussion
You're implying that people who kill on sight for food, ammunition, and other resources are brainless or not willing to "go the extra mile" to get their resources. You're wrong. Player interaction in DayZ is a lot like an ecosystem in the real world. Players can be carnivores, omnivores, or herbivores. The herbivores find and eat food, the carnivores eat the herbivores, and the omnivores don't care how they get their food so long as they get to eat it. The majority of the DayZ community seems to think that the "correct" way to play is to be a herbivore. Unfortunately, just like a real ecosystem, the majority of the DayZ community doesn't get to define how each player gets their food. -
I am a player from the USA, and the large majority of servers are night during our peak hours. There are a select few servers, however, that are daytime during our peak hours - the hardest part is finding them. You might have to do a lot of searching, and it's definitely something that I hope is changed in the future, but I guarantee that there is a daytime server somewhere. Best of luck!

I'm of the Opinion that KoS will be shorted sight and wasteful....
Nalestom replied to dustylion@gmail.com's topic in General Discussion
Killing on sight will always be the safest option for me if I play with a group of friends. I know the capabilities of my friends, and I trust them as much as they trust me. I don't trust you, the random player carrying a weapon that we've just sighted, and there is a slight chance that you're carrying items like food and water that we need. If I have a group of friends that I play DayZ with, I have absolutely no motivation to not kill you as soon as I see you. The circumstances don't necessarily change if I'm by myself. I might be on the verge of starvation, and you might have food. The realistic chances of you giving me any food for free are slim, and the realistic chances of me approaching you without being shot are even more slim. I need food, and your death is the only solution to my problem. -
You should learn to read Cyrillic. It's not as hard as it seems, and you'll never be lost again!

READ THIS - The truth on the hunger/thirst issue
Nalestom replied to *Exile* Sami's topic in General Discussion
I disagree. When a player spawns, they should be relatively hungry and relatively thirsty, not completely full and completely quenched. Spawning with hunger and thirst places food and drink at the top of the player's priority, not finding a weapon of some sort to kill other players with. It places a lot more emphasis on surviving environmental factors, as opposed to surviving against other players. It also means that you can't mindlessly run around while searching for supplies after spawning for the first time - you have to plan your journey based on where you spawned. -
Can i use Razer Game Booster and NOT get banned for hacking?
Nalestom replied to gh0st1nth3sh3ll's topic in General Discussion
Razer Game Booster does not directly affect how the DayZ client runs - it just optimizes your computer to run a specific resource-heavy process, such as a video game. You won't be banned for using Razer Game Booster while running DayZ, no worries. -
Most likely, the reason the zombie population is so low is to test how much load the zombie AI puts on the server. It's better to test that sort of thing on a smaller scale - if each zombie's/entity's AI has a bug that saps server resources, it's easier to find the bug if there are fewer zombies running around as opposed to more.

A video guide on DayZ's new hunger and thirst mechanics
Nalestom posted a topic in New Player Discussion
I made this video last night to explain how hunger and thirst works in the new Standalone. I hope it helps a new player! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zq4Tv6iAr3Q -
Opinions on this behaviour

I've never understood how killing or taunting somebody with no weapons is entertaining whatsoever. -
It's difficult to tell the difference sometimes.

Why is a helicopter an ambient sound?
Nalestom replied to omgwtfbbq (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I know that for the longest time, I mistook the sound of bicycle chains while riding the bike for sniper shots...I swear I've wasted a few hours so far by ducking into cover after mishearing that noise. As for the other ambient noise...I don't know why you guys want it removed. I love it. It definitely adds to the feel of the mod. -

anyone with a passworded private server?
Nalestom replied to gigolojoe0928's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Well then, my apologies for being wrong. As for the OP - Google is your friend anyway. I support the concept of private servers and private hives, but if the DayZ team doesn't want them to be discussed, then their word is law. -
anyone with a passworded private server?
Nalestom replied to gigolojoe0928's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
And when was this posted? Considering Rocket has stated in his Machinima livestream interview that private servers and hives aren't actually all that bad, as they've come up with a number of clever ways to optimize performance as well as clean up hackers, I don't think that it's too recent. -
anyone with a passworded private server?
Nalestom replied to gigolojoe0928's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I'd like to see the post from official DayZ staff that claim that these forums are only for discussing the official hive server. Last I checked, these are the DayZ forums, not the DayZ Official Hive forums. We're discussing the mod itself, not the database that Rocket hosts it on. Therefore, his question (however immature he may be) is valid and in the correct place. -

RE: Private Hives and 'The Rules' - (Update from Rocket inside)

Are you telling me I'm not allowed to have fun? -
I've been finding them more and more often on corpses here and there, so I would say they're a legitimate drop now.
-
You know the pile of corpses behind The Tower? By the trucks? Those aren't zombies. They aren't unfortunate victims of the infection. They're players.
-
Precisely. When being shot at, your first task is to find out where they are shooting from, whether it be via visual confirmation or based upon where the bullet landed and where the sound of the gunfire came from. Only then can you accurately find cover and formulate a plan; otherwise, it's like trying to hide from a ghost.

'Realism' arguments need to be left out
Nalestom replied to Anton17's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I disagree. Rocket's focus on "authenticity," as he words it, draws on emotions to make the game fun. Think about it. The adrenaline rush you feel when you stumble upon a group of bandits and start a massive firefight. The sense of urgency and anxiety you feel as a survivor when both your food and drink are flashing and you're scavenging through the supermarket in Elektro - the same market that a sniper might be watching. The amount of tension you feel when you're staring at an enemy through your scope, knowing that you have only one bullet left in the chamber and that he has the rest. All of those feelings accumulate and, provided the situation goes right, releases a huge endorphin rush. The key to this game doesn't rely in making the game directly fun, as many AAA titles have been misled into thinking (rewarding you for taking ten steps in any direction, rewarding you for firing ten bullets, and rewarding you for firing within ten meters of somebody else.) The game relies on your emotions and your personal experiences in the game in order to make it fun. So, I respectfully disagree. Fun should only take a backseat to authenticity if that authenticity inspires emotions that cause fun. -
'Realism' arguments need to be left out
Nalestom replied to Anton17's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Realism is not a manual to be followed word-for-word, but should be a set of guidelines designed to push us in the right direction. In a real zombie apocalypse, I don't think we'd be having much fun. So let's not make the game TOO realistic and lose sight that, in the end, we are playing a game, and games are meant to be fun. -
I personally prefer the M24 because it's easier to zero in and make the kill on a target. Essentially, you have to do less calculations, which means less time spent staring and more time spent shooting.

Immortal up until the point when somebody with a rifle starts shooting at you, yes. In all honesty, helicopters aren't THAT great. They're hands down the best and fastest method of transporation, and are a fantastic way of spotting bandit camps and vehicle hoarders in forests. However, when it comes to actual offensive power, the UH-1H is a joke. The M240s can't be reloaded, and unless you have a very talented pilot, you're not going to be able to do any damage with those heavy machine guns unless you're hovering - and trust me when I say that hovering is the LAST thing you want to do in a helicopter when you're being shot at. Before people begin to question my experience - I'm a reasonably good helicopter pilot and was part of a group who shot down a helicopter full of people with Lee-Enfields and an M14 AIM.
