Realistic Temperature Suggestion Thread
mooncabbage replied to TheSlyFawkes's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Slightly off topic, but how is Fahrenheit more accurate? Do you mean that 1 degree Fahrenheit is less than 1 degree Celsius? Because I think it Fahrenheit was inherently more accurate than celcius, scientists would be using that instead of Kelvin (which is closely related to Celsius). -
1) Detachable silencers might be possible (by scripting the gun being replaced with a silenced version, and vice versa), but in the context of the mod it seems somewhat unlikely that you'd want to take one off. Finding them maybe, but then how many guns come with the silencer threads already on them? I honestly don't know, but I can't imagine it's many. 2) Could possibly be treated like a ghillie suit, replacing your character skin. Question is, what slot would it go in? Also someone would have to model it. What about an umbrella instead? 3) I would agree with this, if flashlights could be held or attached to the gun in a similar fashion to chemlights. I would like to see them used more in the game, because I don't think they're entirely advantageous. Should probably have some limited usage though, and I don't know if that's possible with utility slot items. 4) I would like to see everything but the godamn katana, cause that's stupid, this isn't kill bill. Although an old sabre or something would be cool. However I don't think melee is very easy to implement in the ArmA engine, look how zombies do it, it's terrible. 5) Cool, but I don't think it's possible. 6) Thermal stuff is available in OA/CO, I think. Or it might have been added in the PMC DLC I'm not sure. It's not goggles, it's scopes on your gun. It is very cool though. Also zombies would probably be bright red, since they're not dead (why do people still not get this). They're the infected, not the unliving. 7) Could be cool. Does seem a little out of sync with the mood of the mod though. PS. Please don't post Multi-suggestion threads in future, and take the time to read http://dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=1734 thank you.

40. I worked out I would need 40 cans of beans to get back to full health. Also, they're just too damn easy to use. I feel like it should take at least a few moments. Although I am grateful I don't have to find a can opener first, thank god for ring-pulls in the zombie apocalypse. 400 blood per can?

1) Running does increase your temperature, just not enough. 2) Agreed. Right now it's supposed to warm you up, but I like your suggestion. It would be easy to implement and understand. 3) Have you even played the new patch? Both rain and water are brutal on your temperature. 4) Already in. Days are hottest at midday. Don't know about nights, but they should be coldest just before dawn. 5) I don't totally disagree, but see my suggestion about beans. 6) Celcius is better than Fahrenheit, but it shouldn't matter because you don't need either for any of this to work. -
I think it's unfair to punish people for having to leave the game. Having a sleeping bag reward you in some minor way while logged out could work though, although you don't want to make it too easy, because being logged out isn't actually DOING anything.

Realistic Temperature Suggestion Thread

Another thing I didn't know, which is relevant to this thread: Hypothermia is already a thing. There are two status effects related to temperature, although it's hard to tell because you're not notified in any way. If your temp is under 50, you have a chance of spontaneously becoming sick. Basically you get a cold, and it's only cured with very rare antibiotics (read: anti-virals). If your temp is under 25, you automatically get the "cold" effect, which makes you shiver, making it hard to aim, although it's not as severe as pain. I think it would be interesting to have to manage being too hot, like if you sprint everywhere in the middle of the day. Having to stop to throw up every now and then would make things interesting when running from a horde of zeds. -
I think this thread just highlights the unfortunate way the engine treats pistols compared to other weapons. Atleast they fixed the ladder thing.

I agree with this, it'd make tents a lot more fun and useful. Although I'd also like to see the slope requirement removed, or atleast reduced to something sensible, especially considering a tent isn't so much a tent as a funny shaped storage locker.

Hotkeys for Bandaging/Morphine/Painkillers
mooncabbage replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I don't understand the problem. The new inventory system works great for me. Some people have complained that it takes longer because they now have to access their inventory page, but for those of us who store all our food and drink and stuff in our backpacks, it's a bit easier, since we can just pop the food in our inventories and use it right then. Infact, even with medical supplies, I find it faster to go into my inventory and use an item than I did trying to scroll through the context menu. -

Ooops, I just realised a cold is a virus, not an infection. Hence an anti-viral would be appropriate to treat it, not antibiotics. Antibiotics would be more suitable to prevent/treat infection from gunshot wounds etc. -

I think the US is liek the only place left on earth that uses Fahrenheit. Remember there are a tonne of Russian servers, there is an entire Russian subforum on here. If it was anything it'd have to be celcius, but I don't think a specific value is important. As it is you theoretically only see the temperature icon, all the debug menu stuff, like the tempval, is the data the game uses. I agree with the OP, I think heat should be managed like food and drink are now, but with nothing like the same frequency. Temperature needs to change much more gradually. Also, hypo/hyperthermia could be more gradual. Thirst could accumulate faster if you're hot for example. I don't have problem with the effects of colds as they are in the game now, the problem is the ease with which you can get them, and the way you cure them. I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I always have anti-biotics knocking around the house it seems. I don't have any epipens or morphine though. So they should probably be more common. Anti-virals I could understand being as rare as antibiotics are now. Also the cold effect should have a semi-random timer on it. Finally, it'd be nice if when you had a cold, there was an icon, like a dripping nose, to tell you you had one. When you're in a group it can be hard to tell who's coughing, especially if you've all taken a few hits (so the blood cap isn't visible). -
I personally support the idea of a sit-down logout timer. I don't know if it's possible, but if the server could maintain your connection for 30 seconds or so and then save your status that'd be ideal. Unfortunately it's not possible to tell the difference between cheating and genuine crashing, but I'd be willing to put up with the odd loss because of a crash, if it meant removing these exploits. As it is, doesn't the server now force saver your status when you quit now, as of 1.5.8.2? I thought I saw it in the patch notes. So if you get shot and log out, you'll just come back and die. The right people don't get your stuff, but you'll still be dead. Correct me if I'm wrong anyway.

Would you shoot the unarmed person?
mooncabbage replied to _triumph_'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
On the other hand, he's a lot less likely to shoot you if he doesn't know you're there. Bullets are noisy, and ammo is precious. It seems easy to find, but when you need it, you really need it, and boy do you get through it fast. I'd let him live, if I didn't know him. If I did, I'd either shoot him or help him out, depending on my past experience with them. -
Server Hopping + Loot spawns + Barbed Wire = Broken Game
mooncabbage replied to jonaswashe's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Does anybody read the patch notes? I'm pretty sure the whole exiting to avoid death thing is being resolved in the next patch, servers will force a save if you abort or alt+f4, or crash or whatever. So you'll come back and just bleed out some more. There is a fix to server hopping, it's just disabled atm as it puts too much strain on the central server. The obvious solution to preventing people camping loot spawns is to not have loot spawn near players, just like zombies won't. About the only thing that makes any sense in this thread is zombies being able to get through barbed wire. It really should atleast slow them down good. -
Actually if anything I'd like to see the Deer Stands become a "Farm" type structure, with farmer zombies and farm loot. It makes very little sense to me to find an AK in a deer stand. A CZ and beans guarded by two infected former drinking buddies makes more sense to me.

I think the point is it's a case of making sneaking possible, or impossible. There isn't really any other way around it, due to the way zombie AI works. Plus crawling is slowwwwwwwwwwwwww and also makes you an easy target. And it's not perfect, if you get too close to a zombie they still agro, even if you aren't moving at all. Winchester needs to be nerfed in some way, but the 15 rounds is legitimate. Also it's not actually a shotgun, they are just using the shotgun shells as the image for the ammunition. It's actually a lever action rifle, and takes a .44-40 round I believe. They should probably remove Winchester 1866 pellets entirely. The best way to nerf it though would be to slow the reload time down to 7-10 seconds as you reload each round, and since the ammo is basically a magnum pistol round, it should be fairly inaccurate at distance. Which it kind of already is I guess.

That doesn't make a lick of sense. It's unrealistic animation vs unrealistic clipping, and I choose unrealistic clipping every time. I'd rather have something that feels right, than something that looks right.

That's Not a Chemlight: How I Accidentally Became a Bandit
mooncabbage posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I've heard some good ones, but I can pretty much guarantee my "Oops, now I'm a bandit" story trumps all the rest of yours. Over the past few days, a few of us from the forums here have been trying to form a survivor group, although we were all initially spread all over the map, we planned to come together, build a camp, and then venture forth to improve our general situation. Our first attempt was thwarted by the ANZ7 GoN server not saving properly, and a crash. Tonight we tried again. The sun was setting as we all got in. The server was fixed and saving, but we'd all turned up at random spawns along the beach. There were 5 of us, at the start. Without landmarks, and in total darkness, chose a heading that I knew would take me roughly where the others would be joining up. I ran for what felt like hours, with only my Gamma Vision to guide me. Eventually, and somewhat coincidentally, we all met up at Kozlovka around the same time. From there we began to move towards our chosen camp site. With the moon now set, the darkness was near total, even with the most xray vision possible. In order to stay together it was decided that two of us would carry chemlights, one leading in front, and one at the rear. I drew the short straw, and would be the rearguard. On we went, stopping once to raid a deer stand for precious AKM ammo, and then one of our number had to leave. At the time, it seemed unfortunate. The four of us continued on, stopping only once, to loot a few supplies. Finally we were only 1 short km from our destination, when our chemlights ran out. Not a worry, I thought, we'll just light another. And so it was, for our pathfinder, the only one of us with a card good enough to see 5 ft in front of his face. When it came my turn, I experienced a moment of lag, resulting in my throwing a chemlight slightly further than I had intended. Only as it turns out, it was not a chemlight, but infact, a hand grenade. It landed plop, smack bang among my compatriots. I was knocked to the ground by the force of the blast. I rose, checked myself, and realised there was not a scratch on me. I wasn't even bleeding. My friends had not been so lucky. Every one of them was dead. And it was in that moment that I realised, I had a towel on my head. I wonder, is sorry enough? -

Zombie Behavior/Herds + Items + Camp Construction
mooncabbage replied to ruarz's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
i do like the suggestion regarding the guns and binoculars though. Glock17 is already in mind. -
I don't think it's possible to refill clips/magazines in the arma engine. I could be wrong, but I've never seen it done, and I don't think you can. So you can't have a quiver and refill it to. It's either 1 bolt per slot, or you can't recover bolts. And when you consider the size of the bolt, I really don't think it's that unfair.
-
I think you're going to be pretty much limited to the skins that already exist in the game. I wouldn't expect more than that. There are a wide range of civilian skins though, with suits, with jeans, all kinds of things. There are also quite a few rough looking guerilla sorts as well as the actual military BDUs.
-
The wildlife already available in the mod, exists in the base game. The zombies are also just facial reskins of existing civilian bodies. There are no wolves or bears in the base game, although I think there are some dogs. So someone would have to model and animate those assets. Personally I'd rather see more civilian gear and weapons added to the mod.

Losing your backpack in water/filling up water bottle
mooncabbage replied to BurstFire (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
He's basically right though. I mean, you can, and probably should have to put your pack down before you go swimming, but I don't want to be losing shit like my gun and everything else just to fill up a water bottle in a pond. Losing stuff could stay, if I only had to go like waist deep to fill a water bottle in a pond, like the ocean. -
What about Lutefisk? Or Surströmming? Actually, nutritional problems from eating only one kind of food would be a great way to discourage people farming the spawns for beans.
