They finally got it right with dayz+, what do you think? (POLL)
Heiduk replied to thelonewarrior's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Looking forward to giving it a try. Maybe, but if it were I never would have seen it. Given that 90% of the posts in there are just ads for some random guys server I never bother looking at that forum. -
This is the time scale I would be looking at. Currently we can starve to death in a few in-game hours so healing in the same amount of time seems reasonable. Even so, a lot of people will probably suicide and run back to their body rather than wait a few hours to heal. I could imagine blood regenerating at different rates depending on what you're doing. The maximum rate would be when you're warm, fed, watered and sitting under a tree. If you're running around but still have all your consumable needs met health would regenerate a little slower and if your cold, thirsty, and hungry no regeneration would occur. Along with this it would be interesting to see more status effects implemented. For example, if you're hungry you can't run or if you're thirsty the edges of your vision start to blur. That would encourage people to keep eating and drinking even when they're at full health.

I finally played a bit over the weekend and have mixed feelings. On the plus side it was nice to be on a night server that wasn't completely empty, was loving my Remington. But, and it's a big but, I think the tougher zombies and rarer loot really exasperate one of the problems with the Chernarus map. Namely all of those small villages with mostly unenterable buildings and a few low yield residential and industrial loot spawns. In a world with more dangerous zombies small towns and isolated farms is where I want to make my living. Instead, the risk/reward balance is almost completely tilted toward going into the larger towns. They might be more dangerous, although not that much more dangerous, especially at night, and I'll probably find something other than tin cans and chemlights. I would be interested to see how it plays on a map like Taviana that is practically overflowing with decent loot spawns. -
v175 beta: meat issues [solved] [old]
Heiduk replied to Dayzo's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
In real life: Does getting a 1 liter blood transfusion instantly restore you to complete health? How long do blood components remain viable without refrigeration? I don't think realism is the most important issue here. A bigger issue seems to be that "Community" development seems to be a bit of a clusterfuck at the moment, with little or no public communication going on. -
Developing a DayZ short film. I want your input.

The DayZ version of a Mexican Standoff: Two players, in bushes (for their magical Zombie protection), on opposite sides of a wall peaking at each other in third person. -
Real...I mean, REAL heli crash sites for SA
Heiduk replied to thodouras95's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I'm not sure if you're talking about AI helos or player flown helos. If you mean player flown helos I think most of what you are asking for is already in the game. Whether or not a disabled helo makes it to the ground in a survivable way largely depends on the skill of your pilot. For example checkout the crash at about 3:30 in this ARMA video for some amazing piloting. Stay tuned for some nice piloting before the crash and a Blackhawk Down style clusterfuck following it. They are running some mods but I think the basics are all in the stock game. -
Don't even make third-person an option for DayZ standalone
Heiduk replied to Pomegranate's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I wonder how much different the history of DayZ would have been if the first YouTube streamers had used first person like all of the ShackTac ARMA videos instead of third person. The soldier would also come into view if the player took one step back. I haven't seen many people standing still in DayZ so I have trouble seeing how the very small increase in peripheral vision provided by third person aids significantly in spotting. Both first and third person are limited and give unrealistic views of the world. The question should be which view best supports the design goals of the game. -

Heiduk replied to Pomegranate's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
For everyone claiming third person has a wider field of view. Have you actually compared it to first person? Here's a hint, they both have exactly the same field of view. The only difference is the position of the camera. Although you can see a little more within a few 10s of meters of your avatar, past 100 meters or so the difference is negligible. See the attached screenshots where the blue approximately corresponds to the extra area you can see in third person. Note that the H barriers and targets are 50 m from the player. Unless people are sneaking up on you by lying at your feet I don't see how third person helps much. -
Should Heli Crash Sites be marked on the Map?
Heiduk replied to klesh's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
No. Maybe 1.7.6 can add LoJack transmitters to all of the vehicles so we can see where they are on the map too. That should cut down on those boring survival bits between the fighting. -

Heiduk replied to Pomegranate's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Just in-case some people have forgotten, not all first person games are first person shooters. Your could remove all of the guns from DayZ and it would still be a better game with first person only. Being forced to make that one little decision: "Do I peak or not?" adds a level of suspense and challenge that is completely missing from third person. -
How to get better at gun fights.
Heiduk replied to WhileOnTarget's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Next time you're about to engage a target from 300 m with an M16 you may want to think twice. It's not impossible to be effective from that range but it is definitely near the upper limit. You may have better tactical options available. -
Don't even make third-person an option for DayZ standalone
Heiduk replied to Pomegranate's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Third person only has a 75 degree field of view. This is completely unrealistic compared to a human's ~110+ degree field of view. Third person is to limiting and MUST be removed. We should be playing DayZ from the map screen as a real-time strategy game with automatic spotting and aiming. -
This is probably the most interesting suggestion I've seen in one of these topics. I'm not sure how well it would work in practice but beans for creativity.

Well said, we may be on opposite sides of the 3DP On/Off debate but I completely agree with you here. Assuming Rocket et al. have a clear vision of what the game should be, which I think they do, these sorts of settings should be design decisions. Things like 3DP, radar dots, and waypoints fundamentally affect how the game is experienced. If they want that experience to match their vision these settings are to important to be left up to internet popularity contests.

As the only limited resource in DayZ vehicle numbers should probably stay pretty low. What else is worth raiding camps or fighting over? More vehicles and less fuel would also be a good solution. Probably more realistic too. How many days after Hurricane Sandy did the NY Metro area start running out of fuel? All that being said, I don't particularly care, I'm with Jamz, generally preferring foot travel or the occasional bicycle tour. “Little boys love machines; girls adore horses; grown-up men and women like to walk.” --Edward Abbey Also... We will have to wait and see how status effects & the HUD play out, but frankly if the only way to tell what is happening with my character is to visualy inspect him in third person I would find that pretty immersion breaking. I would also be pretty surprised, and disappointed, if that is how player status is conveyed in the standalone. As for our femurs made of glass, I think it is pretty difficult to consider them anything other than bugs. Letting bugs dictate the design of game mechanics is probably a bad idea.

Can you elaborate on this a little? The way I see it the main goal of ARMA is: Don't get shot. The main goal of DayZ is: Don't get shot or mauled. Effective use of cover and concealment is pretty critical to being successful at either. Why should DayZ be 3DP=ON when most PvP and TvT ARMA is 3DP=OFF?

Dynamic system of bandit recognition [#2 - rewritten and refined]
Heiduk replied to GodOfGrain's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I think there need to be better ways to identify players you've previously encountered, but I'm not sure the proposed system would be very effective. How often do hostile encounters end with players on both sides still alive? How often are hostile encounters witnessed at close range (60 m) by neutral third-parties that live to report on the events? At least in my experience the answers are almost never and never. I'm also not a big fan of the heart beat indicator. Cross-hairs are off so do I need to aim my weapon at a potential friendly to see if I'm afraid of them? That's a pretty good way to start a fire-fight. -
do you think peripheral dots will be in dayz standalone?
Heiduk replied to Pixelwarrior's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I had two back-to-back experiences where I was down to less than 1000 blood. Blurred vision, shaking screen, passing out while walking up hill or running, the whole nine yards. The first time I was on a Merc. server without dots. I spent two hours wandering through fields hoping for a cow but expecting a bullet. I saw a couple rabbits but had no chance of hitting them in my condition. Finally, I spotted a white blob that slowly transformed into a goat as I approached. Those steaks never tasted so good. I'm not sure I would describe the experience as fun but I did have a sense of accomplishment at the end. The second time I was on a Vet. server with dots. Within 15 minutes I had killed a pig and two sheep and was back in fighting shape. I barely noticed. Dots would be pretty high on my list of "features" to cut. -
Expert/Mercenary/Hardcore Servers Are Empty
Heiduk replied to Kain Phalanx's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
This pretty much sums it up. It is also the reason why all of these server configuration setting should be design decisions made by rocket et al., not popularity contests. What's the point? If you're coming at me with a hatchet and are within 5 ft I don't need crosshairs to fill your chest full of lead. -

Feedback on status of infectious diseases in DayZ
Heiduk replied to rocket's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
After thinking about this for a while I really hope that prevention comes down to more than just finding the right medical loot. Taking Cholera for example, prevention is pretty simple. If you: boil your water, wash your hands, and cook your food your likelihood of being infected, even in the middle of an outbreak, is pretty small. Are players given the tools to do these things? In the mod, although matches may not be rare they are certainly uncommon, much more uncommon than I would expect in any developed country that has just collapsed, not to mention the many other ways to start a fire in the real world. I don't think I've ever had a character who found matches before they needed to drink and usually I have one or more military grade weapons before I have matches. I assume that there has been significant loot rebalancing so hopefully this has already been considered. I've realized that one of the things I really like about DayZ is the reasons that I die. In most cases, it's not because of one mistake or one bad decision, usually it is a series of small mistakes that keep adding up until I'm in a situation I can't recover from. For as bare-bones as the current game is that is pretty bloody authentic. Adding the disease factor has the potential to greatly increase the game's depth, I just hope it doesn't become a series of quests for various elixirs of immunity and healing potions. -

Dayz koS would be rife irl if there was an apocalypse
Heiduk replied to jaytmuk (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
So we have more examples of groups committing atrocities against each other. Although this is analogous to clan warfare, which obviously does happen in DayZ, I would argue it is fundamentally different than the every man for himself KOS mentality that has become typical of DayZ. To provide one counter example look at the crime rates in NYC after Hurricane Sandy (29 Oct. 2012 to 4 November 2012). http://www.nyc.gov/h...tics/cscity.pdf Compared to the same week in 2011 murders decreased by 86 %, rapes decreased by 47 % and felony assault was down by 18 %. The only category that went up was burglary, by 11 %. It's probably best not to read to much in to such a small data set, but it certainly does seem to bely the notion that we are all killers just waiting for the lights to go out, giving us the opportunity to take out that annoying neighbor. -
