Weapon damage, are they ever going to improve it?
Heiduk replied to mitor's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Exactly, the problem isn't so much a weapon nerf as a health buff. Now sit back and imagine all of the crying if players were reduced to having the same amount of health as Zeds, like they should. -
DayZ: Most Private Hives Are Not Real DayZ
Heiduk replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Its not like it's just private hives either. Ever since they stopped policing the Hive some public servers are just as bad. I spawned on some random public server the other day with an Mk48, M9SD and all the tools. What's the point? -
Inventory management and 'Tetris physics'

I've always referred to this as the stratigraphic filing system, old things on the bottom young things on top, and I've been using it to organize my desk for years. -
DayZ: Most Private Hives Are Not Real DayZ

Players, trying to mod DayZ back into ARMA since 2012. -
Who Else Thinks 1.7.5.1 Pushes Annoyance and Survival Too Far?
Heiduk replied to Diz (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I haven't had a chance to play yet but I must say after months of threads complaining about to much PVP I'm loving the fact that this thread even exists. -
I don't have a reference but I'm almost positive that tides are already simulated in ARMA. In that case it is just a matter of having your tidal marsh at the right elevation and it will flood and dry out realistically, with varying water depths throughout the year.

17 pages and nobody has done it yet. I'm so disappointed in this community.

I don't understand what the problem is with players time shifting by logging in to servers with the time of day they prefer. That feature feels fairly realistic to me. In the real world if it's getting dark and I'm afraid of walking off a cliff or getting attacked by something I can't see I'll just curl up in a bush for 10 hours +/- until it is light enough to see again. Nothing forces me to keep wandering around like a blind man.

Alternatively: http://www.arma2.com/ I don't know if it has the T-46 but I heard it does have a lot of cool armor you can drive around.

One simple question Helo vs Heli
Heiduk replied to DayzForumer's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I think almost all of the pilots I've flown with call them Helos, like AussieStig said. On the other hand, the guy who sits in the left seat and yells at the moron who is about to walk into the tail rotor is a Heli-tech. Probably best not to think about it to much if you value your sanity. Just don't call them Choppers. -
How will we lose zombies after bugs are fixed
Heiduk replied to Tacklebait (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
What??? That's ridiculous!!!! How am I supposed to gear up in my standard 10-20 minutes so I can go shoot noobs if I have to be all stealthy and tactical? Hopefully that can be balanced with better starting gear or maybe more care packages. -
This 1000x. Features, especially ones like third person that fundamentally alter the way players behave, need to be critically evaluated by the developers in the context of what they want DayZ to be. If they want a game where the player has near perfect awareness of their immediate surroundings and distant attacks are the only surprises third person makes perfect sense. If they want a game where awareness is limited and players are constantly forced to make life or death decisions based on their imperfect knowledge about what is around the next corner third person makes no sense at all. Clearly I prefer the later, but then again I would never dream of turning off the fog of war in a game like Jagged Alliance or X-COM where death matters and tactics (with a little luck) are what keep you alive .

I'm not sure if incremental lean is its official name but it is an existing feature of ARMA and already works fine in DayZ. I haven't played TOH but assume it operates the same way. Basically instead of going from 0-100% lean with the Q and E keys you can use a head tracker to achieve a 12% or 50% or 67.325% lean. It's only side to side movement in ARMA 2 but with ARMA 3's finer-grained control of player stance it may have more options. With a typical head tracking configuration in ARMA you can yaw left and right and pitch up and down. These movements are exactly equivalent to holding Alt and looking around with the mouse. You can also shift your head left and right to lean. As noted above this is equivalent to using the Q and E keys except the lean is incremental. Finally you can shift your head forward and backward to zoom in and out, although many players disable this axis. Zoom is also incremental. I suppose you could do something crazy like shifting your head up and down to change from crouched to standing or prone but I've never heard of anybody doing that. Head tracking doesn't fundamentally change how you can move. All it does is give you a little more control and take a couple of functions away from your fingers. On the list of OP features in ARMA I would place head tracking fairly close to the bottom. Here is another ARMA specific demo of how it's used:

Got a webcam? Download FaceTrackNoIR That isn't entirely true. You get incremental lean with a TrackIR but your larger point is true. Incremetal lean isn't exactly a game breaking advantage.

Beans for the last honest man in Chernarus. Given the opportunity all of us will cheat. I hate that it is easier to spot players in the forest by looking away from them and using the peripheral dots then it is to look toward them, but that doesn't mean I don't do it. I hate that I can instantly tell if players are in a town by looking at the zombie distribution, but that doesn't mean I don't do it. Sometimes in order to make a game better options have to be taken away from the player.

ShannonZKiller - Jan 2013 - Interview/Livestream with Rocket
Heiduk replied to SmashT's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
That's how I read his statements too. Seems like a reasonable compromise if we absolutely must keep third person, although it doesn't really address roof top camping. Nonetheless, I predict oceans of tears. -
DayZ Feature Request Poll #3 - "The final poll"
Heiduk replied to Grimzentide's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Agreed, None should also be the default answer for each drop-down. Otherwise you will get a bunch of misleading results from all of the people who don't care about Mechanics Option #13 and didn't bother to change their answer from the default. -
Just another giant +1 in support of sticking to a vision and not settling for some lowest common denominator version of what the "community" thinks it wants. To paraphrase what Venthos, I believe, said on reddit a few days ago: "The story of DayZ since the rise of private hives seems to be largely an attempt to mod DayZ back into ARMA, more weapons, more vehicles, more combat." I'm glad I'm not the only person who already enjoys ARMA, but is looking for something different.

Arma2 + DayZ Historical Lore 1.2
Heiduk replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
They are usually INSARAG structural markings (http://www.insarag.o...guidelines.html), or some local variation. I was in Christchurch, NZ about 10 months after the 2011 earthquake. Most of the downtown area was cordoned off but not much demolition had been done yet. I'll never forget the grass growing up through cracks in deserted streets between glass fronted office buildings. Buildings that appeared mostly undisturbed except for the SAR markings spray painted on their doors. It looked and felt like the end of the world. -
All of that has been removed from the most recent changelog: https://github.com/R...ZMod/issues/260 I'm starting to think the Devs are just griefing us. It is DayZ, I shouldn't have expected anything less.

Sorry I should have made the question more specific. Criticism of my list is fine, but I'm more interested in your list. As for #9, every place I've worked the things you fly in that make ridiculous amounts of noise are helos. Calling them a heli would probably get you laughed at only slightly less than calling them a chopper, it's probably a cultural thing. I'm not opposed to having them in-game but using them should require an appropriate amount of skill and effort.

http://blog.dslyecxi...-guys-play-with This is the best argument in support of crosshairs I've seen. I like the idea of a modified crosshair with just the vertical bars, no center indicator, so it is useful at close range but not at distance. The other arguments in favor: difficult to climb ladders, aim axe, crossbow, etc. are probably better addressed in ways other than just keeping the crosshairs. I also disagree with the view that choice for the sake of choice is inherently good. At some point the designers need to sit down and make hard decisions about how the game should be played, even if they have asked for player input (which is awesome by the way). At the end of the day I would rather have 1000 servers with 50 players each rather than 5000 servers with 10 players each even if that means I can't find a server with the exact combination of options I would prefer in an ideal world. For the record, I prefer 3DP:OFF, which usually means CH:OFF too so I don't think I've ever played DayZ with crosshairs, although I've used them in other ARMA play.

Maybe a remix of Frankie Teardrop with fewer vocals? Probably the creepiest song I've ever heard, it never fails to put me on edge. http://youtu.be/_5wJQkvSoOQ

If third person was removed from DayZ...
Heiduk replied to Imafighter's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Of course I would still play. I'm with rocket crosshairs and third person should probably be removed. Quoting his recent AMA on reddit I want to remove the crosshair but I suspect we will have it configurable by servers. Same with 3rd person, but no firm decision is made yet we need to test everything out with you guys first. --rocket2guns
