  1. Welcome to the apocalypse my friend.
  2. What happened to no personal attacks? Why don't you just come right out and call him a 12 year old COD kiddie? As for everyone complaining about Rocket going to Everest, if any significantly sized project comes to a standstill because it temporarily losses 1 person that project has much bigger problems than just the loss of man power. Rocket may get all the glory but I have little doubt that all of the people working hard on the game for Bohemia will continue to make it better while he is off playing. Ultimately it will be their hard-work that makes the game what it is.
  3. I can't say I agree with most of the OP's points but my assessment now remains more or less the same as when standalone was first announced. I would give 50/50 odds that standalone ends up either the greatest game I've ever played or a complete train wreck. Rocket has some great concepts and there is great potential but whether or not the game actually works depends on their ability to execute, which still remains to be seen. For one example consider the much vaunted advanced medical system which I think is a good idea and could add a lot of complexity, frustration, and fun. However, the few hints we've seen about how it is being implemented suggest little more than new magic potions (disinfecting spray) and amulets (deliberators) to collect. Certainly a lot will change between now and release day and I'm still hoping for the Greatest Game Ever but I don't think it is a foregone conclusion. You may want to double check your geography. Chernarus is 225 sq. km. The smallest US state is Rhode Island at 4,002 sq km. North Carolina is 139,389 sq km, which make Chernarus less than 0.2% the area of North Carolina, not even close to a third. Chernarus is much closer in size to a mid-size American city, e.g. Durham, NC (245 sq. km.).

    Is using teamspeak 'cheating'?

I don't know if you're trolling or actually believe this, but I'll bite. 1: "It's not part of the game so its not cheating." By that logic aimbots that simply look for color patterns in a video stream without modifying any of ARMA's files aren't cheating either, right? 2. "It doesn't impact the mechanics of the game." If Teamspeak didn't impact the game nobody would use it. Intel is always more powerful than firepower and that is what Teamspeak provides: intel and perfect stealth. DayZ doesn't have a rule book and to date I'm not aware of the developers making any specific attempts to discourage third party VOIP so in the strictest sense Teamspeak isn't cheating. However, I do think using it detracts from everyone's experience. How fun is it to sneak up on another group of players and eves drop on their conversation? How about trying to arrange the betrayal of one of your new found traveling companions without alerting him? What about coordinating a stealth attack with your squad while maintaining radio discipline. All of these complexities disappear if everyone is using Teamspeak, and this game is already to shallow. Limiting yourself to in-game comms increases the depth of the game and makes it harder. For me that equals more fun. Sure it would be great to have some of the ACE/ACRE features like whisper mode and hand signals but even with the imperfect system we have now you won't find me using third party comms anytime soon.
  5. I suspect there might be a little less complaining if they hadn't been hinting at a new dev blog "any day now" for the last month. https://twitter.com/...984063160414208 https://twitter.com/...984151993188355 Although to be fair, both of those tweets just indicate that the blogs are being written, not that they will be released. Maybe rocket is saving them all up so he can release a giant Making of DayZ volume to coincide with version 1.0.
  6. Yes, and no, it depends on what kind of weapon you are talking about. Sure a DMR or SVD is comparable to that 30-06 you were humping (4-5 kg), but an AS-50 or M107 weighs three times as much (12-15 kg), and that's without ammo. Now add in a Mk 48 as a "backup" (8 kg) plus ammo, and yeah DayZ really needs a stamina system. Again it depends on how you are defining difficult and what kind of ranges you are talking about. Its been a while since I've been directly involved in much hunting but most of the deer and elk hunters I know don't take shots at much over 200-300 m. This agrees with Saethkept's experience and is also pretty in-line with what is generally considered the maximum effective range of infantry. It would be interesting to know what the average sniper kill distance is in DayZ but I suspect it is significantly beyond 300 m. One other addition to the OP's list of the problems with magnified optics. ARMA does a poor job of simulating concealment at range. Spotting a person, with or without camo, 500 m away in a forest is trivial in ARMA but extremely difficult in the real world. In this regard, semi-arid maps like Takistan are much more realistic.

Holding a key to raise weapon? Your thoughts

I think it could work, and is certainly in-line with increasing authenticity/realism. As noted keeping a weapon constantly at the ready is not necessarily easy. What about making the effect of the keybind depend on movement status: When stationary tapping the key would be a toggle. When starting to move your weapon is automatically lowered. This could have a traveling rule where you get 2 steps to adjust your position before your weapon is automatically lowered. While moving at a walk you can keep your weapon up by holding the key.
  8. The importance of this probably can't be overstated. I really don't envy the artists who need to make the lighting look decent on every random piece of junk monitor sitting on a gamer's desk. On my calibrated monitor (80 cd/m2, D65, sRGB) the standalone pics look pretty good. If I had to rank them in terms of realism I would say: ARMA III > Standalone > ARMA II > DayZ Mod. Standalone might be a little to saturated but DayZ mod is way to washed out with to many blown highlights.

    Defibrillation Confirmed!

There should absolutely, be defibrillators in DayZ, specifically AEDs. I can't speak for former Soviet republics but they are certainly quite common in the US. Plus they are easily used with virtually no training. A typical scenario might play out like the following: While raiding the school you're buddy takes a burst of 545 to the chest and goes down. After quickly securing the area you rush over and check his body, no pulse. Most of the bleeding seems to have stopped but there is a bit of a puddle. You open your pack and dig out the shinny new AED you just found, remove the device & pads from its pouch, open the crafting menu and attach the pads turning it on. AED: "Remove all clothing from patient's chest." You follow directions, no need to save the shirt, its a little sticky. AED: "Apply pads firmly to bare skin exactly as shown in picture." It takes a couple tries but eventually you get the pads in the right place. This would be a lot easier if they hadn't removed the cross hairs. AED: "Do not touch patient, evaluating heart rhythm." You step back and breathe a sigh of relief. Everything is going to be OK. AED: "No shock advised." Shit! What's wrong? You jump forward, reposition the pads and step back. AED: "Do not touch patient, evaluating heart rhythm." AED: "No shock advised." This can't be happening! Dammit I should have paid more attention during First Aid class. You move the pads again but all this blood is making it difficult to get them to stick. AED: "Do not touch patient, evaluating heart rhythm." AED: "No shock advised." After a few more attempts you finally give up, nothing to do now but sort out the gear. At least it was a quick death and Zack didn't get him. Now that would be an intuitive medical system. Who knows, somebody might even learn something. Didn't somebody want more useless trash loot in the game?
  10. Forget standalone, what amazes me is that as of right now the corresponding reddit thread has 330 posts. I guess I'm not the only one who rarely bothers stopping by this forum anymore.

    Survey results are in!

I think this is where the misunderstanding is occurring. You don't have responses from a random sample of the relevant population (active people on the forums). You have responses from people on the forums who: 1.) read & write english, 2. saw the poll and 3.) cared enough to answer. Sure margin of error is trivial to calculate, but that number is meaningless if the assumptions it requires are not met. Seeing as we are linking to Wikipedia, you may want to checkout the sampling bias page. Probably the biggest problem with these types of surveys is self-selection bias. One might also consider whether a more relevant population would be "people who play DayZ", in which case you also have an exclusion bias because you are only soliciting answers on the most popular forums. Combine that with potential issues in the way the questions were worded and I'm sorry but there is no way your data supports your claim of a 3.5% margin of error at a 95% confidence level. Please understand, I'm not saying your poll is worthless or that getting it right is easy. I also appreciate the effort you went to, certainly more than I did. I would just encourage you to think a little more critically about your data and what you can reasonably infer from it. Survey results are in!

Citation? I can assure you scientific polls go to quite a lot of trouble attempting to assess their actual margin of error. They don't just assume some arbitrary value. Again, citation needed. I'm pretty sure that almost all modern polling is based on the premise that correctly selecting your sample and designing your questions is more important than a large sample size. For example, most political polls only have a sample size of ~1000 people, but because they tend to be designed pretty well they generally get the answer right. This is also the reason most internet polls are, if not useless, not terribly reliable.
  13. Unfortunately, it isn't. There is no copyright or license information provided with the code. That means it defaults to full copyright protection for the original authors and no one else has a legal right to redistribute or modify the code. By now there are probably dozens of authors who could claim copyright to their own little bit of it, from 1 line patchs to individual "mZLY yZLY" models. Someone who wants to distribute their own version of the code could potentially be sued by any of those copyright holders. This issue was raised shortly after the community version was released but the developers declined to comment on it.
  14. This is what has always puzzled me. Even if you just look at YouTube videos 3rd person is far far less common in ARMA videos than it is in DayZ videos. Some of the most well respected mil-sim groups such as ShackTac flat out consider 3rd person cheating. So why is 3rd person so popular in DayZ, a mod where arguably 90% of the action is PvP combat? Before someone mentions heros, bandits, or PvE, I'm writing this as someone who rarely logs in to a third person server and has never fired on another player in DayZ who hasn't fired on me first. If I had to guess it is for two reasons. First that's how the streamers who made it popular play. Second, it is popular for the same reason 1 hit kill sniper rifles are popular. It allows a solo player to ambush another player with little risk to themselves. The advantage of these tactics are obvious, whether or not they make for a good game is another question. As much as I hate third person I have to agree with the critics of this and the other compromise proposals I've read. All of the suggested mechanics for limiting LOS, or only allowing third person in certain situations seem like they would be difficult to implement well, clunky in practice, and would likely fail to address the underlying problem.
  15. Most of the discussion about standalone has been about new features that players want added. How about a different question: Which features of the mod would you most like to see removed? My Top Ten: Hackers Excessive bloom1 Recon by zombie2 Nametags3 Death messages Peripheral dots Third person Weapons with magnified optics Fuel & fly helos Crosshairs Please disagree, just don't tell me they should all be server settings. 1For example, the window in this screenshot from standalone: http://24.media.tumb...d90z0o9_500.jpg 2Unless that zombie has been trained and is on a leash. 3In their current form. Some of the ideas for consensual tags and IDing familiar players have potential to make nametags interesting.
  16. I'm not saying this is a good idea, but it would be bloody hilarious. The sidechat rage would be epic.
  17. This is supposed to be a zombie survival game, but all I ever do is murder them. It might be fun to try and survive as a zombie for a while. This isn't something I would place high on my wishlist but I think it could be fun if done right.

    5.56mm weapon nerfing

Agreed, if anything Zs could have more health if we are assuming they are some sort of 28 Days Later style rage monster that ignores pain.

    5.56mm weapon nerfing

I know this is the internet and we aren't supposed to pay attention to people who actually know what they are talking about but beans to you.

    Peripheral dots.

I only play merc servers too, so I'll repeat it as well. Either you see something or you don't.
  21. Step 1: Find a GPS. Step 2: Press Ctrl+M Congratulations, you now have a moving map with your position marked on it in the lower right corner of your screen. That wasn't to hard no was it?

    Blind firing

Umm, the idea is usually to suppress the enemy, not yourself.

    DayZ Devblog 15th February 2013

"allowing us to conduct a form of economic regulation to item spawns dynamically." This aside is probably the most exciting things I've read in one of these Devblogs to date. Establishing a real economy has the potential to improve many of the social problems that exist in the mod.

    DayZ Needs a Tank

DayZ does not need armor, period. That being said, I'll play devil's advocate. What exactly makes APCs or even real tanks any more objectionable than the abundance of helos we already have? Also, fun fact, ARMA doesn't model bullet penetration so with enough patience you can destroy any vehicle, including an M113, with a Makarov.
