ARMA already does this along with changing which stars are visible, what the phase of the moon is, and the tidal cycle. Because of the deep integration of real time into the game Rocket has already said that it is highly unlikely that the time cycle will be changed. That is a good thing. Agreed

EuroGamer - Sep 2012 - DayZ Developer Presentation / Article
Heiduk replied to J.D's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
His goals for standalone are sure sounding good, I can already hear the deathmatcher's in Cherno crying. The one thing I'm still not sure about is doing away with the UI completely. Has any other game that tries to convey as much status info as rocket is talking about, multiple types of trauma; multiple types of disease; multiple physical needs, ever tried to do it without a UI? I guess we will find out how it works. Also, I gotta love the Jagged Alliance reference, maybe we can get a cameo from Ivan. -
I grew up in Wisconsin, which looks exactly like Chernarus minus the Russian signs, and I would say that the above looks about right. I would probably also add scoped .30-06 hunting rifles. While flipping through the newspaper on Sunday I happened to notice that Colt M4s are $1000 at Wal-Mart this week so just about anything is available.

Too much complaining about 3rd person view
Heiduk replied to UberFAKnNooB's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Don't worry I don't hate you. Just be honest about why you like third person, which it looks like you are. I can respect that. I just get tired of the players in every gameplay video on YouTube using all of the tricks the OP shows while posters on here constantly protest "I would never do that, I need it because the first person view is to narrow." Me I love third person, when I'm playing Saints Row. -

Too much complaining about 3rd person view
Heiduk replied to UberFAKnNooB's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Sorry, you're 0 for 2. Zooming out does increase you're FOV, that's exactly what it's for. If you want to change your FOV change your FOV, either temporarily or in the config file. Third person does not change your field of view. Oh no, math! To quote the relevant part: The value of an angle does not depend on where you place its apex. -
Too much complaining about 3rd person view
Heiduk replied to UberFAKnNooB's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Actually no it isn't, if a camera's FOV is 90 degrees it is 90 degrees regardless of where you put that camera, note default ARMA is closer to 70 degrees. Moving the camera back does allow you to see more of your immediate surroundings but it doesn't change your FOV. Once you're looking at something more than a few 10s of meters away it makes almost zero difference whether you are in first or third person, assuming your line-of-sight isn't blocked by a fence etc. in first person. If you don't believe me see one of my old posts with screenshots. http://dayzmod.com/f...100#entry696850 I'll be happy enough if these types of difficulty settings are locked to distinct server classes that characters can't jump between when standalone comes out as Rocket has indicated. For now I'm just trying to make players more informed. Third person does not change your field of view. -
Agreed, I think this would greatly improve the mod, but for standalone: This seems like exactly the right approach. The real world is inherently "balanced" by the laws of physics and, Newtonian physics at least, is pretty bloody simple. If you want to fire a bullet accurately at a target 1500 m away you need to start with a large heavy bullet and fire it from a large heavy weapon that has been well maintained and is deployed in a stable position. Many of those constraints are lifted for weapons that only need to hit targets 15 m away. The more of these mechanics that can be modeled in the game the more authentic it should feel and, as a side effect, the more balanced it should be.

Too much complaining about 3rd person view
Heiduk replied to UberFAKnNooB's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Umm, so what? What is the angular field of view in third person? That's right, it's exactly the same as it in first person. The only difference is that the position of the camera has changed allowing you to look over walls and around corners. -

So does this make me an asshole?
Heiduk replied to electroban's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
If you have to ask? As for what to do, use your imagination. It's a bit like playing with Legos, you can't win but that doesn't mean there is nothing to do. Personally, the last few days I've been auditing peoples camps, enforcing my idea of what the weapons balance should be. All AS50s, M107s, and L85s with associated ammo go on the ground. If there are any hacked weapons in your camp everything gets destroyed. If you've got a nice legit camp I might donate some food or a few meds to your tent. I'm sure I'll get board with this sooner or latter but then I'll just find something else to do. -
One of the best tips I've seen for preventing accidental discharges is to get in the habit of keeping your trigger finger on the middle mouse button instead of the left mouse button.

Gauging Interest: A "True" Hardcore Immersion-based Server
Heiduk replied to 9103's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
I'll give it a try, Hardcore/Mercenary is the only way to go. Any chance this would be a US server? I've noticed there are plenty of good European Hardcore servers but very few US servers. -
Um aren't players already creating these all over the map?

How many registered users are stil active?
Heiduk replied to F-ashbang's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yeah, I know. I would never have noticed this if someone hadn't pointed it out in a thread a few weeks ago. Just because it's an integer overflow doesn't mean that listing it isn't making up statistics. Maybe the datatype for players in the past 24 hours could be changed to a 16 or even 8-bit int. That would stabilize the counter on the front page and maybe people would stop complaining. :P -

Heiduk replied to F-ashbang's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Well if it's going to be that kind of thread... I'm right there with you so in the name of constructive critism, you may want to have a talk with your web designer as the front page of dayzmod.com is a text-book example of how to lie with statistics. Literally the first thing on the page is "1,254,537 players". I have no doubt there are 1.2 million unique player ID's in the database but if someone were to tell you there are 1.2 million badminton players in New York City you might reasonably expect that those are people who regularly play the sport, or perhaps self identify as players. Not that 1.2 million people played the sport for a week, in gym class, while in high school. One other example. The number of zombies killed hasn't changed in weeks and therefore is clearly just a made up statistic. Er, never mind maybe all of the numbers on the front page are just made up? -

No, probably a public Git or something would be best. There are some issues, as I paid for some licensed source material. But the dayz_code file could be easily recompiled by anyone actually with existing tools and data. What we need is a team to volunteer Why not post a call for help? There are clearly people in the community with the necessary skills who would love to help. Even without the source in a public repository I'm sure you could get volunteers to start going through the public bug tracker doing triage. Obviously getting good information on bugs is the first step towards fixing them and that information is exceedingly rare on these forums and pretty hard to find on the tracker with all of the duplicates and junk it currently contains. Setting up some infrastructure would require a little time up front but I think giving people a way to contribute would get you a lot of goodwill from the people who care most about the mod. The ones who have been frustrated by the apparent lack of progress over the past couple of months. Providing the private hives a way to contribute fixes upstream would also improve the mod for everyone as they have clearly been able to fix issues that have not been addressed by official patches. At least some of those fixes should apply to the Standalone and with the right licensing there is no reason they shouldn't be used. 1.2 million is not just the number of potential sales for DayZ Standalone. It is also the number of people who can potentially help fix the mod. -
takin a shit in the standalone

The 'one-line questions for Rocket' thread -
It's probably also worth noting that DayZ uses a somewhat nonstandard lighting model that can result in nights being even darker than they all ready are in stock ARMA.

Agreed, third person shouldn't have any place in this game.

I hate most DayZ players too. Just look at the maturity and the quality of discussions on this forum if you want to know why.

Regular players "lost" to private servers?
Heiduk replied to duggedank's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Perhaps a related observation is that there are only a couple of American Veteran (3DP:OFF) and Mercenary servers and their player populations are pathetic. In contrast, there are dozens of European servers and the best servers have populations as good as any of the Regular servers. What is wrong with Americans? Are we all pussies and hackers? -
Addressing "DayZ Game Mechanics thread".
Heiduk replied to gambles's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Great just what this forum really needs yet another duplicate thread. -
I don't think it's a horrible idea but I think the OP got the winners and losers backwards. I've seen this movie, it's a trap, the military want to get all of the potentially infected survivors rounded up in one location and eliminate the problem. Just keep surviving.
