<p>So you've grouped up with every player you've met on your server, gotten all the best gear. You were taking your time, so it took almost a week to do it. Zombies are trivial to kill, you've got your unlootable tent city just filled to the brim with medical supplies and ammo. How long are you going to stick around, and why? Further, now that they've implemented PvE, they've got to develop some kind of method for trading items and making sure people can't ninja loot from you, because you've got no recourse if someone comes along and steals your stuff. This takes development time. This is just one infinitesimal example of what we're talking about when we say it takes development time away from the 'main' game. Like it or not, to do PvE right is not as simple as 'flipping a switch'. That's why I'm against it. I want, just once, for a game that is hardcore PvP to actually have the studio's full development attention, instead of having it split between the PvP and PvE sides. The PvP side gets neglected because hey, you've got 75% of your client base playing on PvE, gotta keep them happy to keep that cash coming in!
  2. Heh, thought it was hilarious that you made this post, I thought for sure it was the one I found. The one I found had all kinds of other gear, the only specific thing that stuck was the MP5. Apparently it's common to leave offroads by the NW airfield.
  3. Was the only primary gun left in that offroad an MP5? If so, you'll be pleased to know it gave me my first driving experience ever in Day Z, though I crashed it and died in one of the more southern towns hitting some road debris. I was wondering what that truck was doing out there unhidden. :)

I truly hope Strategos is right. I think a large reason for the popularity is because it's been a LONG time since there was an online game where you had a chance to actually lose something while playing it, and might not get the opportunity to see and do everything the game has available. Yup! I don't care enough to look, but I bet within the first day of the mod being available, somebody posted 'It sure would be nice to have a PvE option.' The reply was No. Can we move on now?

And what you're saying is, you WANT people to be able to do that kind of shit to you and not be able to put a bullet in the idiot's head? If somebody trains me, I bloody well want the capability to communicate my displeasure with him in a meaningful manner, via 168 grain HPBT. Whether you guys want to hear it or not, PvE means more development.

@Kyrah: The problem is, that is the way gaming has been for years. People build games to make money. They see they can make a LOT more money by catering to the casual, PvE, never have anything bad happen to my character style of gameplay. I'm really getting a kick out of Rocket pretty much saying, 'This is how it is.' I'm really curious to see if that tune stays the same through release. I really hope it does, for a change. If it does, people will bleat on and on about how much better WarZ did commercially but dammit, at least DayZ will have done something the others wouldn't do.

Right. You still haven't addressed the gigantic mountain of historical evidence for every online game that ever went from PvP mandatory to PvP optional causing legions of issues with balancing things for one side or the other. That, coupled with the fact that they would have to create way more content for people to have something to do, because once people have everything and the Z's are no longer a threat, very very few of them will not want the game to supply them with something else to do. You don't have that problem with the other players supplying the 'content'. All I've heard to counter that is, 'Oh, it'll be different this time.' ...Right.
  8. Well, you'd need to get a helicopter to take the picture, so that should keep you occupied for a while. :)
  9. Create realistic pictures of boobs in open fields composed of nothing but whiskey bottles and empty tin cans.

Idle curiosity... You PvE guys keep saying there are all kinds of other hardcore open PvP games. Where is there another open PvP game even remotely close to this one? Completely open, not faction-based.

Any point in not being murderer?

I don't think it's necessarily that they 'cannot survive' exactly. More like it can be quite a bit easier to kill someone and take their stuff. That's part of the game. I personally really enjoy the fact that you've got a bunch of armed people walking around with no restrictions on them. Until you get to know the person, it makes things extremely tense. I'd like to see fewer trigger happy people as well, but I don't like the idea of having artificial factions. Skins for people to organize around would be great, but you should still be able to shoot anyone.

@Siberian: LOL at "dinner bell" Maybe I'm wrong, but your playstyle looks pretty atypical to me. I've only ever had a military grade weapon in this game twice out of probably 30 lives so far, so we're probably not too far different in how we play. My point is, if you make a server PvE, now suddenly everybody can group because hey, why not? The content becomes completely trivial. Like many people have said, "Just make the zombies harder." Which means one of two things, either you've got different settings for PvP/PvE or one side or the other suffers from the attempts to balance the other side. In any case, it doubles the workload (at least) because now instead of providing people a sandbox, you've got to provide them with something to do in it moreso than you do now.

Ok, and what do you do on day 5 when you've got all the gear you wanted and the zombies are now no longer a threat?
  14. Wiley

Right, and approximately 4 days after this is introduced, everybody in it has got the best possible gear they could want, and then the forum whines start, 'Rocket! There's no endgame! There's nothing to do!'

Just follow the graphic glitches, Sula. :)

The game would have to be altered radically to make PvE anything more than blindingly simple. At that point, it may as well be another game entirely. Plus, the guy that's making it said no, so it's a moot point.
  17. Um... no it's not. The map is 15x15km. 225 square km.

Need a little help here please.

If you look at the top left of the inventory window after you've clicked 'open bag' you'll see the name of the bag and a number along the lines of 8/8 on a coyote scout pack. That means the bag is open, and by clicking the left arrow beside an item in the list, it moves it to the bag. Stuff with numbers on the left means it's in the bag and available to be taken out. When you close the bag, you'll notice the stuff in the bag disappears from the list. If you're accessing a loot pile and you open the bag, the slots for the bag appear on the right, and you can move stuff back and forth from the loot pile to the bag.
  19. This game certainly depends a lot on luck of the draw. Some days, everywhere I go there's a gun to be had. Other days, I'm lucky to find a hatchet. Last night I'd just respawned and was desperate for a weapon, climbed up into a hunting stand, and found nothing but a coyote pack, the one that you start with. Many obscenities were uttered. Barns, hunting stands, and fire stations are where it's at to find weaponry. The long open ended buildings that have cattle stalls in them can be good too. Larger towns generally make it easier to find them, but the risk of being shot is far higher. They're out there, you just need a little luck on your side.

    Ways to regain Blood?

I quite like the idea of having health regen relatively slowly, rather than eating a cow and being instantly full health. Maybe tie regen to how well fed you are, with a cap at something like having eaten the equivalent to 4 steaks will let you regen blood from 1 to full in some time frame, half an hour or an hour maybe? If you've filled up on beans, 1 to 2 hours to regen from empty to full? Not sure about the specifics, but I like the general idea.
  21. I support more realistic suppressed weapons in principle. However, almost everything's report doesn't carry as far as it should. If we're going down this road, .30 cal and up rifles should also be audible across almost half the map depending on terrain.

    DayZ 1.7.2.4 Horrible texture bug!

As a temporary workaround til they get it fixed, people might try disabling Antialiasing. I haven't seen it happen since I disabled AA in the graphics options. YMMV of course.
  23. Thanks for the heads-up. I never assume I'm safe. :) It's also possible to figure it out just based on size/mildots too I'd expect. I just always assume the guy's got me ranged and is terrifyingly good. What I really didn't like was the idea of having someone scoping over the bush I'm hiding in and getting a popup when their crosshair goes over me.
  24. Thanks for the explanations, gents. By the sound of it, I'm leaning more toward sticking to Veteran servers if only for the lack of range finding. Just don't like the idea on principle. I think I may give DayZ Commander a go, I have just been going into multiplayer in the game to find the random servers I log into.
  25. Is there someplace that shows all the differences between regular and veteran servers? What are the 'player tags' mentioned? Do they float over your head inside a certain distance or something like that? I was on one server the other night that had the peripheral bubbles showing even when I was looking in the direction of stuff. In other words, I could see where all the Zeds were through the walls/hills/trees. That seemed pretty abnormal, I logged shortly thereafter.
