Can Nothing be done about MetaGaming in Dayz?

Whether it's illegal or not, the day DayZ makes legitimate software stop running on your computer is the day it becomes malicious software and no better than a virus or malware. That is the day I stop playing.

    As-50_Thermal and MP5K [ Standalone ]

I hope that entry for a thermal AS-50 was a late April Fool's joke. <_<
  3. So it seems Rocket indirectly addressed my concerns about the lack of patch notes and general communication WRT experimental: I'm sorry, but for months you managed to provide a changelog, and never needed to provided an accurate changelog. The changelog was always highlighting the most important changes and leaving out the minor stuff. What the devs don't seem to understand is that we don't know what we're supposed to test, would it kill them to post a brief note with the most important changes that could use feedback on the bug tracker? Edit: I would have responded to him directly on Reddit but like many other people I don't have an account for or even use that site, just pointing this out because one of the major issues going on here is the complete fragmentation of information.

What is the best food? Answer here.

Wouldn't you need 3.77 bags of powdered milk to get the same energy you would from a bag of rice? Yeah it's a trade-off, but I'd rather use two inventory spaces for food than four. I have more important things to carry.

    Missed Connections

This is going back a long time, before standalone, but it still bugs me. To the guy with the pistol in the barn near Zelenogorsk: I didn't know you were up there when I ran under the opposite side, I told you that I would let you leave. I told you that I had a shotgun and that your chances were better if you just trusted me. I got tired of waiting, I told you to let me leave, you decided to wing me with your gun and got a face full of buckshot. I ended up bleeding out, why were you such a moron? Update: To the guys death-matching near the yellow police station and long barn in Berezino on DayZ UK 5-74: I wandered in to your fun, I'm the person in the green clothes and green motorcycle helmet who was crawling around the hills. I don't usually seek out PvP but I hope you didn't mind me shooting three of you to death, I had gotten bored and the 20 rounds I had for my SKS started feeling heavy in my pocket. Thanks for the Mosin too. :) ;)

What are the most popular VoIP programs for DayZ?

I have tried explaining how your argument has nothing to do with my post, but you still continue to defend your point as if I am arguing against it. What is wrong with you? I don't know if you simply misunderstand me, or if I have triggered some sort of Stallman-esque open source fanboy behaviour by simply pointing out that hosting TeamSpeak doesn't cost money.

You're still being nothing but pedantic, go back and read what I said: "You do not need to pay anything to run your own TeamSpeak server". I didn't mention slots, I didn't mention the limits on how many servers you can run, these are post-hoc justifications for your pedantry and you haven't come up with one reason that statement was actually inaccurate in any way and you know it, which is why you're continuing to argue and nit-pick. Believe me, you can't nit-pick a nit-picker. If you prefer Mumble that is not relevant to me in any way, do what you want, but my post was simply in response to the common myth that hosting TeamSpeak costs money. It is a widespread myth that even I used to believe, as I said in my original post (but now I'm wondering if you actually read it). As for the player cap, you misunderstood me. I was not talking about the player cap for a TeamSpeak server, I was talking about the player cap for a DayZ server. As for bandwidth requirements, you're right in that TeamSpeak doesn't use a lot of bandwidth but DayZ does and you might run in to bandwidth issues hosting for 32 people on the same home network you're playing the game on, and even if you don't you're probably setting yourself up for desync due to the I/O and port spam. Yes, my correction of your spelling was childish. It was intended to be. If someone addresses me in a childish manner I will do precisely the same.

Can Nothing be done about MetaGaming in Dayz?

I don't see why it shouldn't automatically adjust to your screen or game window if you join a hardcore server, maybe not for the lamecore servers though. Playing fullscreen on a 1080p monitor? You're automatically set to 90 degrees or the equivalent as used by the game engine.

I don't refer to 3PP as cheating, not specifically, but the reason it's more appealing is because people follow the path of least resistance. Now, I don't care if someone prefers to play in 3PP, but if those same people turn around and start going on about how they love DayZ because it's a hardcore realism game they're going to get a mouthful from me for leaving hardcore servers deserted.

You can use third-party Windows applications to simulate PTT or mute, I used to use one myself when my friends and I still used Steam for voice comms because it didn't have a push-to-mute function. You can also use Windows applications to block certain applications from receiving microphone input. You guys are obsessing over something that literally cannot be enforced, why not take a look at my suggestions in post #48 instead? I feel they would at least encourage a lot more players to use the direct communication system within DayZ.

Can Nothing be done about MetaGaming in Dayz?

It's wasting developer time on something people can and will circumvent within 5 seconds just by messing with their sound settings.

What are the most popular VoIP programs for DayZ?

There's always one. I said "you do not need to pay anything to run your own TeamSpeak server", nothing you have said contradicts that. If you need more than 32 slots, which is an incredible amount and not far from the server player cap in the first place, then you should already be looking at dedicated hosting for the bandwidth alone. Since you want to play silly fuckers and be pedantic, it's "you're" not "your". <_<

Can Nothing be done about MetaGaming in Dayz?

I'm really tired of people going on about TeamSpeak and such, it's never going to go away so just deal with it and stop whinging. There are ways to encourage more people to use the in-game comms, if implemented these would make me switch entirely: A 'whisper mode' that operates at a much shorter range (e.g. 3-5 metres) and lower volume.A more comprehensive range of hand signals such as enemy, cover, down, listen, ammo and so on (why do we even have "clap"?)A Battlefield 2 style comm-rose so that we have access to a lot more actions instead of using the clunky and limited F keys.A higher quality of transmission overall, I can barely hear what people are saying on a good day.Until at least the top two of these are implemented I have no interest in using anything but TeamSpeak 3 to communicate with my friends. If you consider this cheating then you will have to learn to suck it up and stop being such a baby, because my suggestions are not remotely unreasonable.
  14. While I agree with you 100%, the lack of communication (esp. patch notes) and the constant axing of servers makes them pointless. In my humble opinion they should just scrap experimental branch altogether and do all the quick-fire experimental testing on stable, people will complain, but those people are the ones who need to go back and read the disclaimer.

    R.I.P Elektro

    DM_Berezino awaits you.
  16. I don't see a reason for Dean to by lying about this, he worked on the game for free long enough. What he has said is that they didn't want to release it because the core networking stuff was not done and because people would just rip on the game, but the demand was so high they decided to release it with all those disclaimers warning people not to buy it. If he sees this thread I imagine he'll facepalm and go "so I didn't have to release it, make up your minds".

Streamers make Day Z SA look like so much action happens.

Don't worry, I know how helpful those forums are. I often get questions answered just by searching them as opposed to posting. I'm more of a visual learner though so I find people like Shenryyr and Arumba absolutely wonderful. :)
  18. In Dean's own words, they didn't even want to release it. They only did because we kept begging for them to do so. There are pros and cons, but I think there is a net benefit as they now have a lot of cash to re-invest.

What are the most popular VoIP programs for DayZ?

For the benefit of everyone else I don't want to keep repeating myself, but I'll still only bother using in-game comms when there's some form of 'whisper mode' or hand signals.
  20. DarkwaveDomina

What are the most popular VoIP programs for DayZ?

People would just use the mute switch on their mic/headset or disable it on a per-app basis for DayZ, and still use third party comms.

Why is there still a crosshair ?

I understand why you might be iffy, but that's thinking about the problem backwards. Instead of wondering how we're going to pinpoint objects without the crosshair we should be asking the devs what they are going to do to fix interacting with objects.

Streamers make Day Z SA look like so much action happens.

I don't watch streamers but I do watch let's plays on YouTube for certain games, and some of those are recorded streaming. Sometimes I want to play a certain game but I am not in the mood or I am too tired, and sometimes it's because I want to learn how to play a game (Paradox grand strategy games, I am looking at you). As for people being "morons" for watching streamers, not everyone who does something you don't like is a "moron". How immature.
  23. I have mentioned to friends that the one big 'fear factor' missing from the mod for me is all the weapons being so inaccurate in standalone. In the mod I was always worried that someone would open fire on me if I were crossing an open field, you ran slower and weapons were so much more accurate that a good player with an AKM zeroed to 800m could take you down with ironsights (never mind a DMR or something). In standalone I am not really afraid of being shot at, after a few encounters since release the adrenaline just doesn't pump so much any more because I know I can run for cover and most players won't be able to hit me.

What are the most popular VoIP programs for DayZ?

I don't know why there is this myth about TeamSpeak costing money, I used to believe it myself before I actually checked it out because it was one of those things people banded about so much. I think it only costs money if you're using it for a business (which probably explains why server companies charge through the nose for slots). You do not need to pay anything to run your own TeamSpeak server, the server software is a 6MB executable you can download for nothing. If you or a friend run the server on your computer you don't need to pay for slots, the server uses practically no system resources and only needs about 5KB/s of bandwidth for each person using it.
  25. I'd fix the GPU utilisation/FPS drop issue in cities.
