So I read OtaQ's interview with Rocket on TopoftheGames.com, and they quote him as saying the following (it's a German site, so I'm translating the German translation BACK into English, and it's a loose translation to make it easier on me, so please bear with me here): ** (Emphasis added) What surprises me about this is that it was my impression from Dean's previous statements that core game systems such as hack-proofing or zed path-finding would be the first priority, and that things like underground bases would come later. Did I misinterpret those previous statements? Am I misinterpreting the quote above? Or am I perhaps just going crazy? Either way I can't wait until the SA is finally released. Rocket's thread about infectious diseases is extremely promising. ** Original excerpt:

Please do! As you can tell, German is my (second) native language, however I always prefer to read what people say in their original native language, due to the possibility of things getting lost in translation. So if you can... English audio or transcript, please! :) Otherwise all I have to say is: solid interview, good work, and thanks. -
Holy cow (badum tschak) that is EXCELLENT!! Fuggin awesome. Stylistically, it actually reminds me of DJ QBert's Wave Twisters (the full 45 minute animated film can be watched at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgdKCMSzI3w) On another note, Kimberlah what's up with that signature of yours?

If you know exactly where you are, why would you need a map marker? You either know or you don't. I don't like map markers. Hm I hadn't thought of that as a possibility. Not sure if that's how the devs envision it. I suspect it's not technically possible, since you would need an enormous map to accommodate thousands of players all at once. In principle, it would be pretty neat, but I fear it's an impossible thing. Just think of Minecraft, it doesn't work like that there, either, and Minecraft uses low-end GFX compared to DayZ! -
Thanks for the mention, Cymophane :) Your English is excellent I don't know what you're on about. As for the L85, I've been playing since June or so and I have yet to find a single L85, except for one I looted off a dead bandit. It would be super rare already if it weren't for the widespread item duping. That said, I don't feel very strongly either way about this weapon. I suspect the main reason it was taken out is because the "Advanced Weapon Sight" (AWS) is completely fictional: it is a hybrid of two real-life sights, and I imagine Rocket took issue with that. Here's a quote from the L85's Wiki page: So I don't think having a thermal sight in the game would be a bad thing necessarily, but as it stands now the L85 is not only fictional but also slightly overpowered, given that it has night-vision AND thermal imaging. Perhaps they could have removed the AWS and instead have the gun come with FTS only, but there are still plenty of ways to spot other players, even without thermal signatures. It's true that some players will continue to spawn in new L85's, but that's a different problem. Seems to me the devs are trying to phase this weapon out, rather than banning it straight out of the gate, know what I mean? Besides, the QQing would be *endless* if they did that :D Makes perfect sense to me. If they are going to remove the L85, I would just as soon like to see it banned, not because I have a grudge against L85 users but because of the duping/spawning problem. This (I think it's the same for #45 and #41):

Very good question. Instinctively, I would say a zombie infection would take some time to spread -- at least a few days, really more like weeks and months -- so overall you'd think most survivors would have time to prepare before they leave their homes. Of course, by the time you enter an abandoned house in Chernarus, it would likely be in considerable disarray no matter how clean the original inhabitants left it, due to zombies roaming through it, other survivors raiding it, or the simple passage of time. I'm certainly anxious to see how they handle the whole back-story in the SA. I'm pretty sure there will be no "end game," they want it to be open-ended til the end. And I thought I heard somewhere that NPC's had been ruled out (besides doggies of course). In any case your idea made me chuckle -- the Ventalin thing is... original -- but I doubt it would really work tbh. Yes, yes, YES! -

Most excellent news. Can't wait to finally try it out. -
For everyone to see ;) Although by the time this thread reaches page 16, we'll be back to square one. Again: The way I understand it -- simply from having read this thread with both eyes open -- is that all existing L85's (which I know you all totally found 100% legit cos they're just everywhere right) will remain in your possession until the item despawns due to death/drop/glitch/whatever. You will not be kicked or banned for carrying and using the L85. Think of it as a grandfathered item: not banned but no longer supported. Kinda like Microsoft Flight.
-
The L85 has been removed from the loot table, which means that it's still okay to carry & use the legacy item, however it will no longer spawn anywhere as loot in 1.7.4.4. In other words, it is being phased out but you are in no way being punished as you may continue to use it until you lose it, die, etc. So... you are now the proud owner of a rare collectible item! ;) Btw I'm no expert, I'm just parroting what the devs have already said on this thread.

I understand, but alas I must second what goleastro said: I disagree with pretty much everything you said! lol sry =) Let me quickly address your main points: Skill systems do not fit with DayZ, and have been definitively ruled out by the devs. Instead, "if you are good at something in real life, you should be good at it in-game too" --> Rocket said this (I'm paraphrasing). I don't see how defibrillators would be of any real use in DayZ; of all the ways to die in the Zompocalypse, heart failure seems pretty low on the list. Also, defibrillators require power (batteries) to work -- just sayin', that's another factor to consider. The new SA map has been dubbed "Chernarus Plus" and will indeed be larger with more enterable buildings. Under no circumstances should there be map markers of any sort, other than what you could realistically scribble on the map with a pencil! I repeat: without a GPS in your possession, there should be NO map markers, neither in towns nor elsewhere! Anything else is totally inauthentic and cheat-easy. There is already an abundance of clans and group PvP in the DayZ mod. What servers do you play on anyway? A donation system for random loot drops? Are you serious? Just think about it for a moment... it's a pseudo pay2win model under the guise of "donations" and you wouldn't even be guaranteed access to the loot drop! There would be no end to the QQing and flaming and trolling and hating and more hating... I hope I don't come across as overly rude but I just had to deconstruct that post of yours :P -
Well I just logged onto a random public server with 99202 + 1.7.4.4 -- DE 2977 I think it was -- and all was well. I was wearing my ghillie suit and was not kicked or anything. If it's up to the server admins to fix this issue then I'll bet that many servers have yet to implement the required changes (and I probably just got lucky with DE 2977). If it doesn't work on your server of choice, I suggest contacting the admins. Oh and don't worry about getting kicked, you won't get a global ban for that.

I'm going to give it a go once the server updates. Looking fwd. to it. Figures that the moment I finally have some time for this, there'a a major update causing delays :P Okay, my bad. P.S.: If we're promoting servers here then I can highly recommend UK 172, it's a public "hardcore" server (3dp:off & ch:off) that I call my home. It has been entirely hack-free for me so far, defying the stereotype of the cheater-infested public servers. There are usually between 10 and 30 players on during the evenings (London time). Just in case any1 here is looking for a nice public alternative to the private hive. -
They say it's a server-side issue = admins' problem, not devs. I currently have a ghillie suit too, and I'm about to log onto a public hive to see if it works...

I agree with you on the silliness of most of the "realism" debate, although I have to point out that AUTHENTICITY is not the same as realism! Rocket once explained this to me somewhere on the forums -- basically it's similar to the movies, which are not (usually) 100% realistic but should be authentic enough for you to suspend your disbelief so you can enjoy the narrative. DayZ is no different: it should FEEL like the situation could really happen that way, without fussing over every minute detail. Like you say, it's supposed to be fun. As for choice, that sounds great in principle, but recall this: Oh and TCC Daniel, those vids are nuts! Lame-ass cheaters, I don't understand how that's fun.

^I second that. ...signing on now! Edit: Nm, waiting for server to update to 1.7.4.4... -
True, but authenticity is also important as it contributes to immersion and overall gameplay. Re. the streetlights, I could go either way. It's not such a big issue to me, and honestly I don't see what the fuss is all about. You say "give us the final decision" as if the community speaks with one voice. The truth, of course, is that the community is comprised of thousands of active players/posters who rarely agree on anything. So what happens is that the devs listen very carefully to what everyone has to say, and then they move ahead with what they think is right. That's what "community project" means, or did you think you would be developing parts of the code? If you have that skill, then I'm sure they need all the help they can get! Otherwise, please get with the program. P.S.: Looks like this thread is on the brink of flamedom... for the sake of the discussion I should probably shut up now :P
-
Here we have a game/mod dedicated to community feedback like no other, but no, somehow that's not enough: your personal wishes were not reflected in this update so obviously it must be utter crap -_- They remove the L85 and suddenly you think those elitist community devs are killing the sandbox aspect? Please. And what's this about "n00bs"? That doesn't even make sense. Look, (community and other) devs will never be able to make everyone happy. They have to make certain decisions, taking into account massive amounts of feedback, data, and the overall vision for DayZ. From the way you're talking, it sounds like this isn't necessarily the right game for you anyway -- maybe you would be more at home in a military-style shooter MMO? Now don't take that as me saying "go back to CoD" that's not what I mean at all, but seriously what got you started on DayZ in the first place if it sucks so hard?
-
Zomg you removed the L85! How could you?!?!!!!1111 Zomg stfu the L85 is useless! Zomg L85 is teh best spotter weapon evah boiii! Streetlights?!? So UNREALISTIC!!! But wait... generators! Power stations! It's atmospheric... no, immersion killer... no, neither here nor there... no, a dead giveaway... Where do I download this? How do I install this? It doesn't work this sux! Great update but you didn't include my obscure suggestion from 3 months ago... community-driven my ass, Rocket iz a fascist! I seem to have briefly gone the Way of the Troll... sorry folks, but that can happen to a man who has just read the whole thread from start to finish o.O ^sanity^ In any case, I applaud the devs for making some tough choices and giving the game a clear direction, rather than having a gazillion "options" open to everyone so we can all go back to the summer days of bitching about the vulnerability of ArmA's open engine... -_- I'd also like to thank the community/devs for some of the more under-discussed changes: For some folks, that's big news. Good idea for a camp spot, wasn't it? Nothing big, but I've always wondered what that was about. Good riddance. Female charas finally on equal footing with their male counterparts? DayZ needs a Lily Ledbetter Act... ^^ That's cool. Don't think I'll be testing the parachute jump anytime soon tho, at least not with my main chara ;)
-
holy crap!! thanks all, I can't wait to try it out!
-
Yeah guess it needs to stay open-ended forever, that's the whole point of the game. So definitely not an "end," but I could see there being some kind of SP quest with a low-level reward such as immunity from critical zombie hits, special items or the like. And if underground base-building instances are added some day, it would open up a whole new world of PvE and sandbox building fun, even when you're playing solo. Of course, all of this is conjecture for the more distant future ;) But a single-player world would also be the ideal place for DayZ newcomers to familiarize themselves with the game mechanics before entering the online fray.
-
I get that java exception error in DayZ Commander sometimes too, just close and restart the program and try again, repeat until it starts downloading (usually 2-3 times). The other thing is that DayZ Cmdr. will often take days to update to the latest beta patch, so when you update manually (or Steam does so automatically) DayZ Cmdr. will say the newer version is "out of date" -_- Solution = ignore the warning and check the actual version number. Otherwise it's a useful program, much better than SIX imo.

Yes, but if you have nothing additional to contribute, the insult thread is over here: http://dayzmod.com/forum/index.php?/topic/106830-best-insults-thread/
