    Build 1.5.8 rolling update

I know this doesn't really belong here, but since someone brought the topic up: The term "CareBear" is generally a dismissive attack on another player, it's also a very weak one that relies on little justification of one's stance. I think that people should be banned for using the term, not because it's a "slur" but because it's a cheap way of dismissing someone else's opinions without engaging in actual discussion/debate. I disagree with many of the people who keep getting called "CareBears" but I'm not going to throw a dumbass name out there to stereotype their responses to the game because I don't have enough grey matter to formulate a complete opinion and expound upon it. It's the same with people who call other people "casual" in the gaming world. I'm sick of seeing this kind of shit in our gaming culture, you're not a "hardcore gamer" because you can act like an ass while calling someone "casual," and you're not a "hardcore Dayz player" because you called someone a "CareBear."

Trusting your fellow survivor, in Day Z

So you start a thread with a double post, the video is of you shooting first when you see another survivor with "lol sup" annotations. And you think this somehow is an excellent way to generate discussion on the topic of trust in DayZ? ...

    1.5.7 update

I got on, No moon, torrential rain, 1 flare. I popped that sucker only to discover before me 30 some zeds in this little podunk craphole of a town, I could count the number of winchester shells I had on one hand. The hopelessness I felt at that moment could never be bought, this is what Dayz should be. There are plenty of distraction methods, and it's straight forward (not easy, but you know what you have to do) to sneak by them. If I had my way we'd keep keep everything as of current and we'd reduce the ammo count in the loot pickups. Be aware of your surroundings, don't shoot unless you have to, use distractions, be smart, stay alive. This is survival, not zombie hunting.
  5. ThatGuy (DayZ)

    Do you get scared?

I know man, I was scavenging this town with a buddy, zeds everywhere so we were just crawling our way around. 5 minutes after entering the area we're about at the end of town, and I notice the "guy" crawling next to me wasn't my buddy... That realization sent chills through my entire body.

    The PvP Discussion Thread

Reduce ammo map wide. Don't reduce the number of spawns, this will only lead to people camping more. I mean instead of finding 15 rounds, a clip, etc. make it 2-3 rounds. Make it so that in order to reload the magazines of gucci guns you have to sit a minute while you manually load every round one by one. With less ammo all around suddenly it matters whether or not you pull the trigger to fight over someone's beans, it might be more practical to rob a player especially if you can't recoup your spent bullet off your prey. It also means that zombie engagements become significantly more risky.
  7. Whelp, http://kotaku.com/5908753/this-might-be-the-greatest-zombie-game-ever-made First Reddit/4Chan, now Kotaku, it's only a matter of time before this blows up even bigger and Rocket gets bought out only to be sent to Siberia. Might I suggest that if a player has joined and is not part of the database that the game tells them to play the ARMA II tutorial? :P Anyways congratulations and all that...

    New no-lifer :)

Welcome aboard! The game is what you make of it. It's very different, it can be very rewarding but it can be equally as frustrating. If you want to RP, that's fine, just be aware that everyone is playing the game differently. Some people will RP with you, others will just shoot you for the sake of clearing their chamber. The best thing you can do to get yourself prepped is to read the Newbie Survival guide that is stickied. Be aware that this mod will not hold your hand, there is no tutorial, and death can undo days of work. Best of luck, have fun.

FR4 server in private with 12 players on it

But Tavish, If we handle these cases civilly how will we ever come to the board crying and making up accusations about admins and groups scheming to get items I don't have?! I guess some people have really forgotten the days where people used to own their own servers, before peer hosting and publisher server only multiplayer options came about.

    Loot Mechanics

Let me get this straight, You weren't able to repeatedly grab "good" loot spawns in the same area, so you switched servers to re-loot for better stuff in the same area... That's not legit, not at all. As to what you're asking, personally I've noticed that most loot that respawn in the same area will be different. I tend to keep moving though, so what do I know?

    Bandit tips?

Not so. Especially if you take the first shot. It's all well and good that you one shotted the dude with the sweet NVG's from 300m away' date=' but now a horde of zombies is running at you because your CZ550 has some sort of zombie mating call muzzle brake. Hanging out in the most dangerous areas of the map with nobody to watch your back is easy? Are you kidding me, 6/10 bandits camp Cherno and Electro with assault weapons or high powered sniper rifles. These are almost guaranteed "first stops" for freshly spawned players (either intentionally or accidentally). I don't know if you've ever actually used your Makarov, but I've been in firefights with bandits at point blank and put a clip and a half into a guy, only to go down in one or two hits from their weapons. Sure it's dangerous, but most bandits don't give a shit. I mean hell you just respawn and run back to your camping ground... I'll admit I'm overgeneralizing the whole bandit thing based on my disdain for people who act big, camping spawn towns with a CZ, shooting new players who don't know their ass from the signs they can't figure out how to read. Bandits who head north do have some balls, but considering most places north are KOS everyone who goes north has to have some balls. I'm never sour when I get killed by a bandit in the north, it's a mutual thing, if I saw them first it wouldn't be me back spawning on the beach :P Malaclypse is absolutely right, you could still get all your goodies without having to kill anyone by joining groups and reaching into their bags, while they are on their person. That takes some real skill, and I'd respect someone legitimately RPing to survive that way.
  12. Well done, nice to see some good survivor teamwork.
  13. ThatGuy (DayZ)

    Bandit tips?

Start by being 12 years old, you get your high powered rifle or gucci gun of choice, then camp spawn or some other high traffic location, kill people who actually try to survive as they would IRL, take their shit. You don't have to deal with zombies, you always have the element of surprise, and if worse comes to worse you can always fall back to joining groups and shooting people in the back. Bandit is DayZ easy mode. Should make bullets so rare on Chernarus that everyone thinks before they fire, so bandits have to actually rob people without shooting. Go the metro 2033 route, and make bullets the currency.
  14. I don't understand why anyone is complaining. It's their server, they bought it, they should be able to play on it however they want. I think most of you forgot that people can own and operate servers. I blame the modern industry trend of peer hosting and publisher owned servers for this obscene train of thought. If an admin is breaking their own server rules then take it up with the owners, on their own forum or via some other means, not this board. Forgive me Rocket, I enjoy your mod and I agree that we shouldn't support people who abuse their admin positions, but you shouldn't be policing how people run their servers either. I know you didn't mean it that way, that you were addressing stress issues, but your response can be misconstrued as saying "if hosts don't play our way, we can't reconcile our differences, then they're gone." If they are causing damage or unnecessary load to your HIVE servers then cut 'em off, but anything beyond that is not your job. Again, much love and respect.

    [GUIDE] Newbie Survivor version 1.2.0.

Here's an intro guide for PvP, useful for both survivors and bandits alike, most of this should be common sense: 1.) Get over the fear and frustration of dying. Everyone who has played this mod has gone through a time where they spent god knows how long gathering supplies, collecting the perfect zombie apacalypse equipment, meticulously crawling for hours to avoid zombie encounters only to be shot by someone over a can of beans. It sucks, it can make you want to punch a kitten, but it's all part of this mod. Romero and others who've helped birth the contemporary zombie lore did so with a lot of thought into the social condition such outbreaks could bring, and that's what this mod thrives on. The sooner you can accept that PvP is part of this expirience, the sooner you can function as a survivor/bandit, and maybe even enjoy it. 2.) "I'm about to be shot." This phrase should ALWAYS be going through your head. As such you should be aware of your surroundings. Where are you going? Where is the nearest cover? Is this a known PvP "hotzone?" Stick to the trees, survey the land and make note od potential ambush spots, and sniper positions. Additional tips: -Airfields, military camps as well as the larger coastal cities (Elektro/Cherno) are PvP "hotzones" and should be avoided. If you have to go to this places do it with a group, and don't dick around. Go in, grab what you need and get out. -Most survivors don't have Nightvision equipment and cannot see clearly at night, take advantage of this but be weary as it's easy to slip into the mentality that the shroud of darkness is enough to keep enemies away. It can be very easy to stumble into a zombie or the crosshairs of a well outfitted bandit. -Sometimes crossing a clearing can't be helped. It can be tempting to just mash the "W" key and sprint to minimize your exposure in the open, unfortunately the rapid movement and your large profile are easy to pick out especially in peripheral vision. Crawling is good, however it can be impractical to cover some distances, and they're still no guarantee you won't be spotted as amusing prey to someone with sinister intentions. A good comprimise for most situations is the low crouch "combat" run. This will allow you to cover ground in a sufficient amount of time whilst maintaining a low profile. 3.) Have a plan. Let's say you and your buddies are making a run for some beans in [insert town/city/BFE here]. The plan is get in, get out, gigle whilst braiding eachother's hair, and fall asleep out under the stars whilst farting up a storm. What happens if you get fired upon? Where will you go? Will you attempt to leave the situation, or fight back? Where's the rally point for you rgroup after the engagment is over? These are all things you need to consider. What to do in when you are inevitably caught up in an active engagment: 1.) Are you near cover? -If yes then hit the deck and roll behind the nearest cover. -If no then immidiately sprint to the nearest cover whilst zigzagging. You know those annoying jukes and erradic moves the zombies make, yeah do that. 2.) Keep your cool, where did the shot(s) come from? Keep hard cover between you and your attacker at all times. -If you're on a server with 3rd person enabled this can be a great help in locating your attacker. 3.) Fight or Flight. I'm not going to tell people how they should play, whether they should fight or run for the hills, but you can't just sit there waiting for the enemy to flank or otherwise get the upperhand on you. -If you're going to fight, be smart and give your character a few seconds to breathe and stop shaking, if you're hit immediately give yourself painkillers. Shoot from covered positions. Advance and flank your enemy. When you're in a bind; grenades, flares, etc. can help distract, or temporarily reduce visibility, don't count on them though. -If you're in a building it goes without saying, stay away form the windows/doors. Pick a choke point and let the enemy come to you. -Patience is a virtue, if you wait it out long enough your attacker may leave because they need medical treatment, are low on ammo, or just don't feel like continuing the engagment. Your best bet in these cases is to make sure you're clear and then get the hell out of there. Don't chase them down, especially when in unfamiliar territory. 4.) Are you hit? -If so you will need to asses how bad. Can you move? Are you bleeding fast? Be aware of the different medical conditions it's possible to be in and how to cure them: Painkillers for shaking, bandages for bleeding(transfusion or eating cooked meat for severe blood loss), morphine for broken bones etc. 5.) Communicate. If you're with a group everyone needs to split up the visible area and watch their "sectors." Immediately hit the chat up with everything you know. This means Where, Who,and What whether you're in a group or not. Special note: If one of your buddies goes down be prepared to make a quick decision about rendering medical assistance. That should be a decent enough start for newbies.

    DayZ Stories

This one happened over the weekend while I was playing under the name "Grim" : Back pressed to the dinning room wall of a dilapidated residence, they just kept coming. The house filled with low groans, creaks, and tortured footsteps. I shoved the last of my shells into my old winchester, I say it was "mine," in so much as the grass, birds, and waves could be "mine." It was obvious that the original owner took great pride in its care, even going so far as to meticulously clean every inch of the decorative finishing of the barrel. The hunk of mud and powder could barely be mistaken for the art it was before as the barrel erupted painting the entryway a deep red. Pictures lay about the place, there appeared to be a family photo featuring a tender smiling young woman in the embrace of a serious looking man, standing over two rosey cheeked children. There were 5 placemats set about the enormous dinning room table scrambled around. Clearly the family was expecting a guest when the outbreak occured, now only myself and half of the town’s undead visited. I dove through a broken window out itno the street, shaking the glass from my hair I sprinted towards a lone factory. I dispatched the last of them with my revolver and the quietness of the wilderness set in. My head pounded, and my hands shook as I fumbled through my bag. Shit. I was out of painkillers. I put out a call for medical help, and within minutes I got a response. He said he could see me and that he was on his way. I sat surveying the treacherous field of undead he’d have to navigate on his stomach. “This is crazy,” mumbled “surely he’ll be torn apart.” 10 arduous minutes later he made it to the factory. We exchanged greetings, and I promptly downed the offered painkillers. He said he didn’t normally help survivors in a bind because of unwanted attention, but was feeling a little adventurous today. “Thanks, I really can’t thank you enough man” I would find myself repeating. We decided we’d team up for a short while to make a run to a nearby military camp. Jackpot! Assault rifles, medical supplies and all the food we’d ever need could be found just lying about the open. During our expedition a can of beans had accidentally fallen out of my bag, and with a loud “CLANNNGGGGG” it hit the pavement. We both stopped. Suddenly loud cries and footsteps shambled towards us. “RUN, GET THE F- OUT OF HERE” he said. We ran back towards the only landmark we really knew, the factory we had met in and sprinted up the stairs. We immediately took up positions on the second floor, picking off our undead assailants as they clambered over their dead comrades towards us. With the horde finally dispatched we agreed it was best we head our separate ways, wishing each other luck I turned to survey an adjacent field. The last thing that went through my head, before the bullet fired from a bandit, was "that was a close one..." Upon respawn someone found the bodies of me and my new friend. Anyways a drink to the bro who lost everything just to help another survivor out. I’m sorry I don’t remember your name, but I can’t thank you enough for your kindness, it was fun. Also, sorry about all that :P

    DayZ Stories

I was making my way across the map when I stumbled across an unmarked airfield. I cautiously moved around the outside of the inner wales, being sure to keep trees between me and any potential bandits. Suddenly the silence was broken with a loud "CCCCRRRAAAAAAACCCCCKKKKKKKK whiz..." of a high powered rifle. I saw a nearby zombie drop to the ground. I immediately went prone and rolled to cover and waited. In the background I could distinctly hear a low "chop-chop-chop-chop" I hadn't yet heard in dayz and recognized it immediately as a helicopter. Sure enough this helicopter comes landing near the hangars of the airstrip and the pilot jumps out. "CRRRRRAAAACCKKKKK whiz...." the high powered rifle fired toward the helicopter. I slowly moved toward the gunshot and waited. Sure enough a bandit comes low crouched out moving to a better position, needless to say I dropped him with 4 winchester slugs at 25 yards. He had a CZ and an AK with 5 mags. I'm doing my part, how about you?

Food and water being used offline

I completely agree with the above. It's hard enough that we have to make trips to town ridiculously often due to how ungodly our metabolism is, it's also hard enough to get into a server. Don't make me have to decide whether I'm going to work or am staying home to play a video game to keep my character alive... :P

    The PvP Discussion Thread

How would you approach this situation in real life? It's the end of the world, every man for himself, and some asshat has completely lost his marbles and is off shooting people, or is just trying to live off stealing from others. You stay in large groups that make it impossible for your standard bandit or even a small group of bandits to engage without casualties. You don't cross open areas or draw a bunch of attention to yourself. You suspect anyone with high power assault rifles or other types of PvP-centric weaponry. You don't warn them, shoot them all on sight(unless someone can vouch for them). Whenever you are engaged by one of them you find cover to communicate immediately and clearly your situation over global/side chat, and any survivor in the area should immediately and unconditionally render assistance. Hell if it bothers you that much make a forum thread where survivors can openly report bandits and backstabbers with last known locations and screenshots. I cannot stress the need for survivor communication, with enough friendlies working together keeping each other informed you can build a network of trust and hunt down PvPers. I've been on a few times where someone was shooting up a town and a few friendlies said "enough is enough" and coordinated an assault taking the bandits down. Police yourselves, and play smarter.

    More servers?

  21. All profiles are tied to the same account data. So you're stuck with just the one guy you have. I'd like to see support for multiple profiles, but it's one of those things that should be low priority in terms of development.
  22. ThatGuy (DayZ)

    The PvP Discussion Thread

I'm sorry but this needs to be addressed: If you think that when Romero came up with his film portrayal of "zombies," which generally shapes our contemporary outlook on zombies and "zombie lore", that he never considered the social implications of such an outbreak then you're really not a "zombie lore" fan... This is not a zombie hunt, with a bunch of players going around shooting zombies recklessly, this is survival. If you don't like it I'm sorry, I wish others like you could enjoy the mod as much as I do, but don't you DARE come up in here frothing at the mouth ordering the dev team to change their website, mod description, and mod because it doesn't fit with YOUR ideal zombie universe.

    entrenching tool

Dunno, I don't think you can actually dig a trench or foxhole with it with ARMA2's engine so I'm thinking it's probably to fill sandbags or "dig" the super secret underground caches that are soon to be added.
