Does anyone know why leaderboards is disabled?
Cooperal replied to feffez's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
They seemed meaningless from my perspective. Scores carry over to every leaderboard you touch, even if the score was achieved elsewhere. And the legitimacy of top scorers, what with Alt +F4s and hacks, is highly questionable. One less reason to encourage illegitimate play (no matter how small) sounds like it outweighs the moot point of a kill-count competition right now. -
How to know which houses are salvageable?
Cooperal replied to Slackin's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Learn what the models of each building look like. The same model of building can always be accessed (although there are one or two closed houses that look similar to open ones). While learning this, keep an eye out for any transparent windows. Only a minority of buildings are fully accessible so it's ideal to see the windows from the front of the building. Also note that one or two buildings will have a door that's barely enterable with a loot drop just inside the entrance. And some houses will have a shed off to the back or side which spawns loot under a small sheltered area. If the door is closed on arrival AND there are no transparent windows, the building is almost certainly not worth trying. It appears not many players like to stop and close doors behind them. -
Fastest way to get a lot of practice for gauging your crosshair in relation to your target is to get on vanilla ARMA II and pick a sniper scenario. There are bits that some guns allow like zeroing but it's most important to get a good handle on regular bullet travel speed and the eventual dip first. If you know much about subtlety you won't need to be sniping many fast-moving targets, making what you've learned from ARMA II transition over more easily.

Just because you called it before it could be said, it doesn't make it any less true. You can't keep letting your emotionas get the better of you if you're gonna continue with such an unforgiving game. You hopped to a low population server in an attempt to dodge competition over a high risk zone and got killed anyway. Tough. Nobody is entitled to immunity. And this is certainly not the kind of game where camping is foul play. To say so would be on the same level as thinking there is anything wrong with "hard-scoping" on CoD. Infact, it doesn't even sound like you could know for sure if it was someone sitting there all day or if it was someone with the exact same idea as you.

Well I'm too old to be called a boy anymore but I'll play along. I'm a "boy playing as a boy." And this poll looks riddled with lies.

Your Shoot On Sight Threshold?
Cooperal replied to Taggert1313's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
If they have a weapon and don't cooperate (eg. turn around to face me while armed, don't drop their weapon until I'm gone, follow me without my say so), you can sure well bet that I'm going to ventilate them with bullets ASAP. I'll also not consider the friendly option if I KNOW I can kill without ever being seen. That's a lot of time saved on further risk and perhaps some very jittery trust. Their is no worse feeling in a game than dying after showing mercy, absolutely nothing. I feel that the only course to take when encountering other players is to be strict and thorough. I once held up another survivor from behind at gunpoint in a general store. I told him to drop his guns, which he did, and I also checked his backpack. I loaded with his ammo and told him to stay put. So I checked the rest of the store and wandered of to another two houses. I returned to the store soon after and to my surprise he actually waited, but he was clearly prepped at the back room ready to hack away at me with his hatchet. Other than my advantage of range, I also had another bargaining chip to work with. I told him to carefully move around to the front so I could leave out the back and tell him where I put his ammo. Again, he cooperated. I left his ammo under a tree, behind a house, down the road (the truth). Having already done all the searching I needed in town, I was ready to leave. I sent him out the door on his little egg hunt and made a dash the opposite way. I wouldn't have been so nice if I was having a shit day. -
Very unlucky. I've had the good fortune not to come in contact with any hackers yet. Although I've been purposely selecting my servers carefully just to avoid them. If you were a hacker who had the intention of irritating strangers, you'd go for the largest servers available. I dig carefully for low population servers. Ones with decent ping. Where I don't need to play on nighttime servers just to avoid the hackers. Takes longer to find those servers depending how close you are to peak hours (especially when the time is about 4am GMT) but dig hard enough and you'll find a gem soon enough.

B.I. doesn't give a shit about you...
Cooperal replied to YouCan'tGetRidOfMe's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Well yeah, it's a SIM, not designed for any highly competitive/e-sport audience. They don't tweak things just because they're "imba", they tweak things so that they most accurately capture how real-life elements all relate to one another.. It's widely accepted that putting "immersive" and "multiplayer" into the same gameplay (especially where tactics and cooperation are involved) would be like trying to teach a snake to co-exist with mice in a cage. However, they allowed multiplayer due to the popular demand that it can fulfill without touching singleplayer gameplay. -
Yay, Bandit and Hero identifiers are coming in
Cooperal replied to tuleg1t's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I do hope that he's clever about identifying people with high humanity. Using supplies (minus bullets) on other players might not cut it. it would have to give VERY low +humanity to not counter-balance all the murders that might get shared among a bandit group. That and players could intentionally boost it to mislead strangers. Perhaps only raise humanity when a player kills bandits, or as an act of self-defense from neutral attackers. Although it does sound very hard to survive KoS players consistently. To balance that, have humanity counts that are higher than default carry over lives, with lower than default humanity resetting. The logical explanation for it: There would be plenty of good-willed people in that should carry into the apocalypse. However most of the people running around commiting murder probably hadn't killed a man before the outbreak. The reward of retaining a visible sign of honor over each life also encourages players to consider the consequences of killing on sight. Much like a person in that scenario would consider their morals. -
In terms of immersion, I like to run around with anything that comes with a wooden stock and grip. It just feels so right. Having an old, scratched, worn-looking AK model in a Russian setting just gets me in the mood. We can't have everyone running around with the latest military technology, leave the over-abundance of that for your cheesy high-budget blockbuster games. While I've not explored close to all weapons so far, my favourite in terms of functionality is the Lee Enfield. It's highly accurate and having iron-sights over a scope makes it feel a bit more user-friendly than sniper rifles at mid-close range. The noise (now greatly reduced) can easily be backed up with a side-arm if necessary. Anyone that knows the first thing about managing resources will also have no problem replenishing ammo passively. A very reliable weapon. One I'm willing to bet has no problem standing up against higher-end equipment.

Finding a playable dayz server is like finding a unicorn
Cooperal replied to TheMachine's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
It can be hard to find a server if.... You're trying to find one that's working, lowly populated and in the daytime, probably for the purpose of getting easy grabs on a major military looting areas. Those artefact bugs with everything stretching like crazy, those seem to be rampant around Stary Sobor. -
Dublin Zombie Walk - See you there?
Cooperal replied to spazfokel's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
An Irish friend of mine goes to the DZW every year. Posting all sorts of pictures of the event on facebook. She loves a lot of cosplay and fancy dress for the rest of the year around (despite actually being attractive). Needless to say, when she's got that zombie make-up on, the bodyshots are always the way. ;) Wish I could feel the atmosphere of one of these events in person. -
Killing with the help of hacks isn't fair. Dying because you broke your leg on a doorway isn't fair (but neither is it the fault of the killer). Personally I love unfair when hacks and bugs are aside. It's unpredictable, ever-changing, exciting, raises stakes and gives developers more flexibility over the things that are actually interesting. In a game like this, saying "it's not fair, he has more range than me" is like a 5 year old saying "it's not fair I was reloading". Take better care of yourselves!

Night time doesn't serve a purpose
Cooperal replied to jayboltz's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
It grants very good visual concealment from players and zombies. It adds further purpose to all forms of light sources, night-vision and thermal scopes. Lack of sight enhances your sense of hearing. The stars can even be used to navigate the direction of North without the need for a compass. Temperature is decreased. How did this thread reach so many pages? Was the point slapped in this guys face in the first few posts? -
Why do people call them zeds
Cooperal replied to GulpinGulpin's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Now that you mention it, thermal vision indicates the zombies give off a heat signature. Doesn't sound like normal characteristics of a dead person to me (well neither is walking around but you see what I'm getting at). -
Why do people call them zeds
Cooperal replied to GulpinGulpin's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Miles better than those people who say "baddie" to describe someone they percieve as bad at a game. Not only does it make them sound 4 years old, they're also usually the one who is shit at the game. I don't use it but I don't think "zed" is all that bad. Just a capitalised pronunciation of their first letter. Could've come up with worse. Like "zees" or "zeebies". I'll stop before I give out any other ideas. -
So, how many of you that play girl characters...
Cooperal replied to a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I play a male. I always do in games that don't offer multiple character slots. Reminds me of me. However, while I wouldn't normally buy the retarded excuse that is "I don't like to stare at a mans ass", this game is not exactly known for it's titillating experience, and involves a lot more crawling than any game I've played for at least a long time, probably ever. -
You can't sum up human behavior statistically. You can't even sum it up briefly. Most players will be uncooperative. Normally the only way to trust someone is if THEY get the drop on YOU and choose to let you live. I personally wouldn't recommend giving people chances. If you hold someone up, the most likely thing they'll do is spin to shoot immediately or talk you into lowering your gun so they can turn the tables. Count eachother lucky if you genuinely gain your hostages trust.

Do you know what having good pieces of gear does for me? It discourages me from logging in. Little to gain and much to lose. I instinctively crawl around zombies and take flight against opponents that have a good chance. And I'm by no means a big fan of suicide. I live because living is the one and only highest priority, by miles. With all gear coming passively. I want to go down in a fight I have no choice in. I want to lose this attachment I have to my gear. I want to enjoy all the sensations of a fresh start. Anybody else having this issue with just launching up and playing? And how many times will I have to die with decent loot before I can pre-emptively shrug it off? I love the nature of this mod and games like it. Immersive and unforgiving, which in turn makes it scary and exciting. I'm kicking myself for no longer being able to engross myself in it. I've only enjoyed it purely as a lone wolf so far, which I reckon makes a big difference.

Spawned near some train tracks I followed to the right. I eventually encountered a village (which up to this day I've still not identified). 2 zombies case me and I start bleeding. Lose them in the water, swim back to shore and patch up. Crawl into one little house and find trash. Leave the building and get hit again. More bleeding. Run twoward the water with no plan of how to resolve the bleeding. I guess I hoped it might stop. Let myself die. I thought I was just a little unlucky. But even now, I can't seem to crouch-walk without getting spotted instantly unlike those people on youtube. I prone the second a zombie pops up in the distance.

Real men have self-control. They don't just do the right thing because something forced them to.

I say 30 seconds. It's a staple time that a lot of online games stick to when someone disconnects abruptly. If someone is still alive after 30 seconds of inactivity, you just weren't killing them hard enough.

Apparently Day Z players are not the only ones sick of Arma's engine
Cooperal replied to Bad Science's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Bohemia already appear to have ARMA III well under way. It could very well be convinient to model a new training simulator off of its mechanics. Likely with extra features to meet the requested specifications. Likely less graphically intense though. I imagine it would be well in their interest to maintain the title of a developer that creates up-to-date software for the military. Especially as their popularity has recently spiked to former glory if not better. -
I can only see the disadvantages out-weighing the advantages with playing with the average joe. In any game I'm always trying to drag someone up to speed while they're more successful in dragging me down to theirs. And I never die except in a futile attempt to save them. Saving them from something that would never have been a danger if they didn't keep taking my warning about going slow as hell for granted. More fights, less loot. Infinitely more resposibility. Players that don't need to a retold the same thing every corner are like diamonds. And I neither feel like I'm stuck up or exaggerating for saying so.
