    November Round-up

Says the lucky dude on the stream who spawns in as a scantily clad asian woman . . .
  2. Map improvement was the standout. Vybor was big. Very detailed, very realistic. FOV slider Lot of cool improvements with items, item usefulness, etc. Mentions of another military base . . .
  3. Damn, Biohaze, you would've love it! Better than anything we've seen so far.

On clothing, one could have separate outfits stored somewhere and pull off a total Yojimbo by playing both sides. Pretending to be two separate people!

The point is, despite bugs, that was a real treat and looked fuckin awesome. So stoked now. I may push back my prediction of Jan1 to March 1 but after what I just saw, totally worth it. But having a downer tone about some bugs is off point with how awesome that stream was. No point for downer talk right now, were you not impressed? That looked pretty freakin awesome! Totally sold on clothing as influential for gameplay. Could you imagine impersonating someone? Clans will know each other by sight, completely contextually real.

That screenshot from Hicks is outrageous. I'm literally raging from happiness! Just put my fist through the wall from rage filled happiness. It's out baby! The rage is out and it is truly rageous. But seriously the level of scale suggested in that shot enthuses me about the plausibility of 100+ pop servers. Two teams of 4 could easily have a battle that feels expansive and natural, just within that picture. That's 8 players in just some small section of whatever city that is.

    New(ish) loot system help

Is maybe a problem stemming from mod being detached from BIS and never having, because it didn't need it for popularity, some overall marketing strategy and community relations management. We don't see on the front page some sort of updates or positioning statements allowing uninitiated players some general info. So here I go! First, we want to remind you that the mod has been community developed for some time now under the general directive to "mix things up". Razor and his collaborators are generally free to try out all manner of tweaking. So the mod has changed quite drastically if you haven't played in awhile. But don't worry, it is still fun. Think of it as a whole new game. Embrace that chance to feel completely lost again. I don't personally enjoy all of the new changes, especially 1.8 related, but I do enjoy them in the spirit of innovation and seeing what kinds of scenarios might be interesting for the SA while incurring no negative cost to the SA. Surviving isn't necessarily easier now than it was before; just different. As you notice, cans of food are everywhere. That's because zed damage has increased. Earlier, zed damage was low but zeds quite frequently gave you an infection, which was a near death sentence for most players. I haven't been infected once since 1.8. I used to carry 3 antibiotics with me at all times, all times. Surviving is easier with 1.8. I can't deny that. But also most of the hackers are gone! The fact that one can actually walk from Balota to Zelenogorsk without getting thunderdomed is still a fucking miracle. Just remember
  9. Werd, that's about it. Also us229, which is still lightly populated, For all practical purposes, US3480 is the last, active public server. Unfortunate state of affairs, to be sure, but mitigated somewhat by the fact that 3480 is a great server. Big ups to Jimmy and Triton. Say hi to that rascal Borges for me. Just don't go anywhere near coast. I recently discovered this. Many of those remaining 300 or so public servers are simply "gear up servers". They're only turned on long enough for the server admin and potential buddies to hack in everything they want. Then they teleport to Electro or Cherno. Then they log out and log back in to 3480 to do pvp. Basically cheating in my opinion, but a loophole with no consequences. But these types are lazy and only go to Elektro/Cherno and maybe nwaf. There was a half repaird mi-17 in berenzino yesterday on 3480. Go get it. Pre edit: Just noticed the dates of prior posts, oops oh well.
  10. The first time I roll over on my eye glasses while sleeping and crush them. Always talking about the value of hunters, food growers, mechanics, etc. But can you imagine how valuable an optometrist would be in an apocalypse!

Dang! I always miss these hypetrains. Oh well. A thought: Wouldn't SA's imminent release be more hinged on whether they've rented the appropriate server capacity yet? Have they already spent the money to host enough servers to accommodate 30,000 players? There's gonna be a shit ton of curiosity purchases on launch day. Also, is it that BIS/DayZ's relationship with Steam is different? What I mean is, there's no info box for DayZ on Steam's "coming soon" or "early release" pages. Are they relying on the assumption that word of release won't spread too far if it unceremoniously pops up on Steam? Surely every online news outlet with a gaming focus or gaming section will run a blurb about DayZ SA launch. Seems like so many unfinished details to iron out. That'd be awesome if it came out this Monday, for example, but I gotta think it's gonna be awhile. Still say Jan 1
  12. This is perfect. Consider that one runs a couple hundred kilometers, then hits a store and eats 2 cans of beans and 1 can of pasta in succession. This is kinda exactly what you need for DayZ. Nevermind the hell perpetrated on your stomach because of frayed nerves. Maybe it should have a rolaids dispenser on it.
  13. When I have a bandit skin, as I often do, I ALWAYS make a point to tell the dude in direct chat that I got the bandit skin by self defense, even if that's not true. Assuming that he's gonna infer from your actions that you are not truly "a bandit" might've been the simple mistake here. Tell the dude some sob story about how you had to fend off multiple survivors and inadvertently got the bandit skin. But also assume that this tactic will only work 1/3 of the time. Plus you went into Balota and helped some unknown dude and turned your back on him, that's a death wish move under any and all circumstances. More of a social experiment with the assumption of death. Also, these make great stories. Love backstabbing, even sorta when it happens to me.
  14. Yeah, this would be cool as a sort of master checklist. There will be a milestone one day wherein my character can take a dump in DayZ. And I do agree that monumental feat should be recorded as "checked, done". Mission complete baby! And I'm not being sarcastic here. This is totally earnest. How amazing is it to get sniped while taking a dump in a virtual mmo. Can't wait!

    We look for the standalone?

8 bucks! Really!? I was gonna say get it but now I say double get it! I'm so surprised to see all the votes for "wait" . . . Bean me if this rings true with you fellas? I felt like after seeing just a smattering of stuff (vids, an article, whatever) I already knew DayZ was gonna be my favorite game ever without actually playing it yet. I see some magic in a scenario where you spawn into SA for the first time having never played the game before. But a stronger intuition says I think Reservoir will enjoy it more if he plays mod, gets some practice in, understands how it works and finds his footing, he'll enjoy the SA even more. I think we'll be playing both mod and SA for at least a year, anyway. And I think even at full price, buying ArmaCO just to play DayZ for just one year is a fantastic bargain: CAVEAT if you are true believer, cliche but true. A player is either enamored with the project or not, simple as that. If in the former, I say please send Bohemia all money you can. Buy your friend a copy as well, and play it with him! Even if Standalone came out Jan 1st (my prediction), then you have 40 days to play mod, and you just don't have any idea how much fun and crazy shit you can get into in 40 days. That's a long time in DayZ. So much fun shit, I say go for it.

    what happen if SA sucks?

Yes quite right, KoS, the hacking is the most important thing. I'm so glad Dean understands this. As he said, the scripting literally undermines the entire game! I don't think most people understand the magnitude of that, if they can solve scripting. I understand that Arma still operates on the initial guidelines that could allow rampant hacking but isn't a major issue with that game because the community is small, dedicated and finds a way to make it work with an honor system. Obviously DayZ would also relegate itself to this state, a niche game, if it can't find an acceptable solution to hacking. Well I want DayZ to get huge. I want Dean Hall and his team to have the money and resources available to develop this game into the behemoth it could be. And I don't mean just popularity, but popular because the concept and execution are just that awesome.
  17. "Dress Rehearsal" needs to occur, which is an all-signing, all dancing test of a server.I'm putting on my hottest dress . . . .. you sexy bitch.

    what happen if SA sucks?

I want to reply back to KoS in KoS language-- Is good question, I trust what you say is real, understanding funny parts Trust me I not send you bunches of panties, knowing is okay to pose controversial question-"what if SA suck?" but still okay I wouldn't mind make love to Rockets face for giving so much gaming fun, is respect but for why, "what if SA suck?" for extra features you say? me think you mean handcuffs, etc? maybe, but what extra features you see I miss? we have seen this, is true, but also but also we have seen Dean say is working on core of game, to remake core for good expansion to extra stuff and I think we see this is honest word from him from videos as well. is expectation for me that SA will suck, but not for reason KoS is fearing but for reason is Dean "Dean Hall" Hall is making good on promise for solid core so we no see the extra features at first, no special gun, no car, no radio, no baby zombie, but is boring so first months maybe game is for lacking total enjoyment, but for good cause in long run is okay though for meantime just run and hope to kill KoS since is public server just kidding, but not but hope is language KoS is easier to comprehend also hoping clarify which is "extra features" he worries to be waste of time is compass? compass is important, attention to detail is credit to thoroughness is handcuffs maybe? yeah, I agree on that one is melee combat with zombies in latest video not perfect? yes is true, and yes true, please make perfect before launch but I trust is happening, no problem. Anyway, mind is hurting wanting to help find "big hole" in dev that is derail train but is seems on good path to me.

DayZ Mod - who still plays?

I've tapered off a bit lately but I've been hittin' it hard last six months or so since the hackers left. Been a blast, straight up.
  20. Fairly sure Dean said new maps will become available for free (year and half after launch, my guess). I infer that he intends to create entirely new maps on his own. He says he'd love to do a western map. This is smart. I remember Dean saying in an early interview that part of the serendipity of the project was the fact that Chernarus happened to work really well for what he had envisioned. It was luck. The other Arma maps are fun and I'm sure many people favor Taviana or some other map more, but Chernarus is obviously the player favorite for a reason. But imagine a massive world like Chernarus (or more!) that is specifically tailored for the game DayZ. DayZ might not click initially with the general public. It might need its own map. It seems a common complaint from the less than committed is about the map itself. Also, there have been so many great ideas just on this forum related to map construction it begs a new one just to see all the cool stuff implemented.
  21. I want to know about server browsing, how's that gonna work? Also stat tracking

    November Round-up

Werd. Anyone who doubts the look and performance enhancement, just hop into a mod server right now! It is kinda absurd how the zombies behave right now. What we saw wasn't perfect. But I trust it'll improve over time. Judging by what we saw, I'd speculate Jan 1st. I say take the time at this point, and Jan 1 has a nice symmetry to it, me feels.
  23. Werd. I'm afraid I'm guilty as well. I can't do it anymore. I've turned evil, not even banditry, just murder. I killed a guy yesterday, for really no reason. He combat logged. Whatever. It's funny though, "little to no consequence for their actions, and what they are capable of. Griefers gonna grief...." Dean Hall, as a player, claims he doesn't do any of that but he project leads the game showing off grieving tools i.e. handcuffs, restraint mechanism, radios. It's interesting. I agree SA will be pleasantly limited in scope and survival might be an issue. In that case, we could see some genuine desire for cooperation. 1.7.7.1 anyone? "Patch is going to be SUPER hard for new players. Hell even hard for vets."--quote from a guy on 1.7.7 forum page. I hope they get some of that in there. I never played 1.7.7 without a teammate, cuz otherwise I'd die. Anyone wonder if there'll be "Utes people'? Players that are so paranoid that they hunker down out there and never come to the mainland? I'm considering that as a strategy, since I want to keep my first character alive as long as possible.
  24. Sorry to continue, I know its mildly off-topic. I'll bring it back at the end . . . Agreed and glad someone else mentioned this. I'm a little suspect of the reminiscing about the "good ole dayz of DayZ". The mod wasn't out for very long before the mass of us signed up in May/June '12. KOS was already a concern when I started playing in late May. There was maybe a two week period in early May when KOS wasn't a primary concern? Also remember inspiration for the game came from Dean's experience in the N.Z. armed forces while on a survival training mission. A main point there is that he stole food from his squadmates because he was in such dire straits. The whole point was a game of such nastiness that players might be forced into unethical behavior. It's that whole, "Normally I say I don't steal, ever. But what if my life depended on it?" So many players seem to be expressing this varied desire at the SA fixing some issue with kos. I recognize most are wanting some sort of readjustment, not a complete 180. However I would temper that expectation. There's a thousand reasons why, but as a social experiment DayZ has proven unequivocally it is a kos world. Being a survivor sucks, although there is a nobility to it. But every man has his breaking point. For most it's just a few hours. The ping issue being addressed is fantastic, though. I've lost so many engagements because my game can stutter during combat. I wonder how much banditry is a function of success. Maybe leveling the playing field between high end rigs and lower pcs/laptops will cause some hesitation for combat as bandits find it less successful to prey on low end rig folks.

    DayZ dreams.

I have a dream! . . . where a player would be judged, not by the color of his bandit skin, but by the content of his actions.
